This is purely my headcanon...But I would suggest that Spyro beat Gnasty Gnorc again (offscreen) between 1 and 2 (after "here we go again"), and THAT is why he feels he needs a vacation. Going through all that ONCE would be enough, but TWICE? Yeah, the guy deserves a vacation.
Yeah that may actually be what happened since at the end of Spyro 1 some dragons were shown being re-crystallized, which kinda suggests Gnasty Gnorc wasn't really defeated....
I still think, that it's just the Developers way of saying "Now YOU can play the game again"

That permanent powerup can also kill the Earthshapers, so the Alchemist mission becomes a snap.
Thank goodness! So much more satisfying the second time around. I can't remember if you can clear them out before talking to the Alchemist or not.
Though you STILL need the Head Slam attack to trigger the second half with Hunter, though if the Earthshapers are already dead then it will start and then immediately end.

@@firehedgehog1446 Europe isn't just one goverment making these weird decisions. Mostly Germany and UK wants these changes and I don't get it. Also, Ripto's Rage sounds more like a revenge story that should follow after Ripto's first defeat (he doesn't die from the lava, you'll see it after getting all the skill points). The best name would be Gateway to Avalar.

How funny you uploaded this review right on the same day the Spyro Twitter posted a video showcasing the cutscene with Elora callling Spyro a dork in Ripto's Rage in the Reignited Trilogy. Good timing there dude!
As a kid I always new this game was magical. I love the look and feel of this game. I will never forget playing hockey as Spyro

Just an FYI: a lot of times names are changed in Europe to make translations easier; Ripto may not be easily written, or may sound similar to a word in a language, or Rage might have bad connotations in some region. Rather than making that sort of mistake, they give it "Gateway to Glimmer" which can be nicely translated into every language.
plus empahsises the new world that SPyro is exploring, rather than the new villain who doesn't have THAT much screentime
The Elder One I think they did it to avoid translation issues. They got “Ripto” from the Japanese characters for “Spyro” so I think it would look weird if Ripto appeared in the title

The game does specify what the soul things are. 'Spirit Particles' is what Zoe calls them early on in the game. So yes. Spyro gains new powers through soul harvesting.

Spyro 2 and Ratchet & Clank 2 basically have the same plot at this point.
...come to think of it, Ratchet and Clank did something similar with game 2, but on the opposite side of the coin, where the heroes had TOO MUCH vacation before being called into action. xD

Oh no...that's not the Greatest Hits Version of Year of the Dragon I saw you holding. :/ The normal version of that game had an incomplete soundtrack, and reused music tracks that don't fit the levels at all. Please, review the GH version! The soundtrack is worth it!

This is my favorite of the trilogy. I can't even explain why but when I think of my favorite Spyro levels, Idol Springs, Skelos Badlands, and Metropolis quickly come to mind. Also that fetch quest in Mystic Marsh is probably the most memorable mini game in any of the games to me. The Home Worlds are also soooooo iconic

I like how AntDude's voice sounds. It's feels calm and really puts a strong idea on the positives and negatives on games he looks at.
As a kid this was the first game I ever 100% completed. Holds a special place in my heart because of that.

It's called 'Gateway to Glimmer' here in Australia too! Every time I heard 'Ripto's Rage' I thought it was an entirely different game that I was missing.

This review is absolutely amazing. One of the best I’ve ever seen.
Just saying it now, Spyro 2 is the best in the trilogy, but I could have said the third game, but I never played it until years later.
And I'm still waiting for that Metroid to be gone from Kirby's head.

Reverse that for me; Played Spyro 3 when I was a little tyke but never Spyro 2.... until much later. So to me, Spyro 3 will always be the best, though Spyro 2 is also an amazing game as well!
Yeah I think Spyro 3 has the most impressive variety and really improved on everything I didn't like about Spyro 2, so it isn't even close for me. In fact, I would probably rank Spyro 2 last in the trilogy. Still a great game, though, no doubt.
Nice review. I adore Spyro 2. Easily my favorite of the original trilogy and favorite Spyro game of all time. Can't wait to play it in the Reginited trilogy.

I always wondered about the UK name. I mean... why? isn't glimmer, like... one single level? It isn't exactly super significant. It's just the first level you're put in. It's not even a hub world.
Oh and I'm pretty sure the game flat out tells you that those are the enemies souls.

Let me explain about Idols: you get Idols so you can move on to the next world. Seeing how the third world is the last, naturally, there aren't any Idols. It's that simple. In Super Mario 64, you still get stars because you need them to get through the last door.

14:02 it is possible to get over the ladder section in Glimmer without the double jump trick, but it does take several tries to pull it off.

"Rage" means rabies in French so I guess it's possible. My understanding though, and I don't remember where I heard it, is that they thought people would be confused by having Ripto's name in the title because no one knew who he was and it's similar to Spyro?

This was easily my favorite of the 3. I spent so much time on this one. This one also may have been the one where I transitioned from clueless kid to hardcore 100% completionist.

I love how Caddicarus was like: "The f*ck, why would y'all Americans call this game "Ripto's Rage" which implies that he's a returning character but we've never seen him before"
And AntDude's like: "Aye, what kept you from naming this game "Ripto's Rage", this just makes sense, "Gateway to glimmer"? Pah, nah, "Ripto's Rage" makes way more sense." XD

Ripto's Rage was one of the few PS1 games I owned and played on my PS2 but it spawned some of my favorite childhood memories. At some point, though, our copy of it just got lost or sold or something. It's the reason why I'm looking forward to the Reignited Trilogy: so I can reexperience that game I've been longing to play again for so long.
I’m expecting them to take out the unintended double jump in the Reignited Trilogy. Unless they like fun. But they probably don’t.
Well considering it wouldn't be taking it out.. it would be something they'd have to add in since it's a new engine it's probably more complicated then you think.
I mean, if these are the same people that did the Crash trilogy (I'm not really keeping up here), they kept some unintending tricks and glitches intact there.

These spyro videos have been fantastic. Also, I feel the same way about Autumn Plains. It's such a perfect setting.
1.) In the first level of the game, Zoe, the fairy who save your progress says that when you defeat an enemy you release their 'Spirit Particle'
2.) In The game, Hunter says the alchemist turned his Shoes into concrete. The alchemist told him that he could turn Hunter's shoes into gold, and botched it.

Ripto's rage is my favorite of the trillogy as well. I adore that game.
Fun Fact: The music from each of the hub worlds is just a single looped sample from a library. The library is called Distorted Reality 2, made by Spectrasonics. Actually, this library is used quite often throughout the soundtrack, with some examples being the music from the levels Hurricos, Aquaria Towers, Idol Springs, Skelos Badlands and Zephyr.

Thank you for mentioning the Skill Points. Those added so much more playability to an already filled game. I'm hoping there are achievements and trophies for those in the remakes.

I had forgotten all about the alchemist until you mentioned him and showed him on-screen. I was immediately triggered when reminded of it. So many curse words were spewed when escorting that little piece of--
I always loved the voices in this game, the way it sounds like they don't have pop filters and you can hear all the Ps and Ts pop, idk I just love it in this game it's just nostalgic for me. I miss it in the remaster..
That little hover at the end of the glide looks like it’s the best addition, I can’t count the amount of jump in Spyro 1 that came just short of a platform when I played it.
My favorite level in this game is Fracture Hills. Loved the music of that level even the music the satyrs made.

Spyro 2 is by far my favorite of the Trilogy and i can't wait to play it on the Reignited Collection. The crazy thing is i got stuck on Gulp when i was a kid in 1999. I didn't end up beating him until i replayed the game on PSP in 2010.

I did the exact same thing with the homeworlds and just wandering around them as a kid. Between the music, the amazing colors, and the little touches like leaves gently falling, it was almost a dreamlike experience wandering through those homeworlds. To the young me, it evoked this sense of imagination and wonder, made me feel like beyond that polygonal horizon was limitless adventure and possibility in a world better than the one we live in (you know, the one with all the, uh... terrorism). I know that sounds corny as hell, but... there you go.
Spyro 2 is my favorite in the trilogy too, and gives me flashbacks of my childhood every time I play it! (To be fair, I liked Spyro one as well. And the first world in Spyro one gives back really good memories.)
We had the Gateway to Glimmer title here in Australia, too. Not sure why though.
I actually felt a bit sad that the Reignited Trilogy didn’t change it to Gateway to Glimmer for the regions that played it with that title... but it’s only a small thing, would have been cool if they did but it’s still an amazing remaster.
