This is a great series. It's easy to forget that not everyone has played all the "staple" games. Nice for a games channel to cater for that audience

I've played Catan a few times with friends- I give it a hearty endorsement.

Catan is a game my family has played for years and years. It’s our thing we do either over coffee or any time we just want to relax and spend time together. Hope everyone gives this game a chance and enjoys it as much as we have!

A game centered around commodity management and building the beginnings of an industrialized economy? This is more German than schnitzel; I love it.

"I've got wood for sheep!" has to be said at least once in every Catan game.

Pro Tip: If you're looking at expansions, get Cities & Knights first. Seafarers is a VERY good addition but C&K changes the game so much that you will never want to play with out it :) Have fun!!

There is a mistake at 3:38. You correctly read the rules but the visual example is wrong. You are holding 7 cards in your hand which means you don't throw away half.

I'm here because I simultaneously don't want to learn the board game that all American youth pastors love more than the Bible but also want to beat them.

I hate Settlers with a passion, for being terribly balanced and putting too much emphasis on the luck mechanic.
If you're unlucky, your game can end virtually during setup because you're stuck in a position where you'll have to get *very* lucky to accumulate the resources needed to achieve anything. Worst thing, there are starting situations where you have no chance to win but don't know yet, effectively wasting an hour watching your friends explode all over the island expanding and thriving while you struggle to get a foot on the ground. Since new settlements need to be connected to your road network, you can lose any ability to expand your reach and improving your opportunity to gather much needed resources early in the game.
For a german game, which are known for being incredibly well balanced and giving everyone a fighting chance even in late game, this one is just sub-par.
And yes, in Germany we shorten the game to "Siedler", not to "Catan".

When placing the starting settlements (free-hand, not as listed in the manual), note that when each player has plopped down their first village, the order reverses. So the last player to put down their first village, is the first player to drop the second settlement (another village, or a city in the Knights and Cities expansion). Personally, I find that this mechanic prevents turn one lockouts quite effectively.

I know this game since its first release in Germany in '95, and believe me, I experienced more than one game with turn one lockout.

Klaus 'Toy-beh'...every time I hear one of the rest of the team butchering their German pronunciation, and there is a lot of it on planet board gaming, I picture Lolies cringing.
