      Hi Sheetal, I live in the Northeastern part of the United States. I had my surgery done by a doctor who no longer does septoplasty. I'm sure you can find an ENT specialist who can perform the surgery in your area. Good luck,

      @@TotallyUniqueLife It's been 2 weeks and boy what a difference. I can actually breathe through both nostrils near 100% now, where as I probably had 30% airflow in 1 and maybe 10% in the other for over a decade now. I kept putting it off since I thought it would cost an exorbitant amount of money...but then realized its covered 100% under our OHIP. Best decision of my life so far.

    Thanks so much for making this video! I'm currently trying to get mine fixed. I have never had an injury to my nose, although it's crooked and I cannot breathe out of my right nostril at all. I want my nose to look straight so badly and was disappointed to learn that the septoplasty may not straighten it. After watching this, I have a little hope that my nose may still get straightened a bit...maybe I'll get similar results! Either way, it'll be a relief to be able to breathe properly. I'm glad your surgery and recovery went well!

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Reagan, thank you for your kind words and this is why I did the video - to help others in a similar situation. My doctor was able to, as he put it, undersell and over-deliver. I was extremely happy with the results as I really didn't expect any improvement in the straightness of my nose. What you could do, is have the septoplasty done and if it straightens is out that is great! Either way you will be able to breathe through both nostrils. And maybe if you still are bothered by your crooked nose, you could look into a rhinoplasty down the road. Please mention my scenario to your doctor. He may be able to do more than he tells you up-front.
      Please check out the articles I wrote as well which can be found in the description. They give a lot more details.
      All the best to you Reagan,

    Appreciate you for making this video! I had my deviated septum corrected today and the doctor told me he also strenghtened my nose tip. My nose was a little crooked in the upper section & my bose tip was wide and did not project much. I'm excited to see the result the day after tomorrow. It will probably be swollen but I should still recognize an improvement in shape as well. Of course the improved breathing is also a huge advantage!

    I read your article after my surgery. Your experience is very much like mine has been. My surgery was done on December 29, 2021. I had Septoplasty with Turbinate reduction and opening of the sinuses. I go today January 5, 2022 to get my splints out. I’ve been using saline nasal spray regularly as instructed. Every morning and night before bed I would use a nasal rinse kit that was recommended. It had premixed saline pouches which I would add to distilled water in a squeeze bottle. The solution would go through one nostril and out the other one. I hope my splint removal is as easy as yours. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the good article and the before and after video.

      Hi,
      Please know that I am not saying that a septoplasty will straighten out your nose externally because my doctor told me straight out, only a rhinoplasty will guarantee that outcome. For me, the septoplasty definitely helped but I am not saying that will be the case with your situation.Talk to your doctor. He will give you the straight info for your situation.
      I just wanted to present my case so that others can see that a septoplasty _may also affect_ the outward appearance of your nose.

      Hi Tammar, I cannot assess whether or not your insurance will cover a septoplasty or not but mine did. I just have a high deductible so I had to pay whatever was left between what I had paid during the year in my deductible and the maximum deductible in my plan. Everything else was covered. Just check with your plan representative and they will give you the rundown. Please read my articles as well because I go into that in more detail. I had surgery Dec. 5th so I’m a week post op. Splints removed yesterday and I agree it didn’t really hurt. I also had balloon dilation as two airways were blocked and suction of sinuses that were 10xs their normal size.
    I’m still very tender, a bit numb and have slight swelling. But I can breathe from both sides, crazy how much airflow now ha!

    I wasn't sure if it was the lighting so I looked at some of your other videos and your nose definitely looks straighter. I kind of think they have to say it won't change the appearance as a formality but if they are straightening your septum why wouldn't it change how it looks? The difference would be if a person has nasal bone asymmetry that can only be fixed by a rhinoplasty (or septorhinoplasty which is a combination).

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jessica. I agree with you and so does my wife. It is definitely straighter. I couldn't really afford a rhinoplasty anyway so I really didn't have an option. I agree if the internal septum is being straightened how could it not affect the outward appearance of your nose? Yes, I agree that there are some people that simply need a rhinoplasty to correct the appearance of their nose. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

The recovery is fairly quick and I do recommend that you read my articles that I cite in the description. It gives a lot of information that I don't include in the video. Don't worry. It is a fairly routine surgery and you'll be all fixed up in no time!
      Please report back after the surgery and let me know how you are doing.

    My husband is on day 3 of recovery. He has been feeling not too bad, just very tired, and finally a little less crummy, although he had a sinus-type headache today.
    I also have a DS from a broken nose from a car accident 30 yrs. ago. I'll likely have the surgery also. I'm about 60/40% according to the dr. that did a quick guesstimate . My husband is {was) 80/20% -- and hopefully much improved in a couple of weeks!

      Hi NK, I wish the best to your husband in his recovery! Please read my articles on my website as well which can be found in the description. I found the recovery not too bad at all. One tip - use the nasal spray religiously. If he has splints in there they will come out a lot easier if he continues lubrication of the area with the saline spray. It's amazing the difference for me after the surgery. So nice to be able to breathe out of both nostrils!
      Good luck if you have the surgery as well. Is your nose crooked from the accident? If so, the septoplasty may help as it did me but my doctor made no guarantees. All the best to both of you!

      My nose is wonky at the top by the bridge, where there is now a bump. It was a compound break, so the bone broke through the skin (sorry). Glad I didn't see anything, I'm sure it was gruesome! I don't remember the accident at all.

    Top stuff buddy, I’m glad to see of someone else doing a video of what I just went through.
    I just got out of the hospital today after having septoplasty and turbine reduction.
    I have a question, my nose is quite sore, inflamed and large after coming out.
    I’m just a bit worried, Will it get smaller?
    Also how many times a day would you say you used the saline spray? It says to use it 3 or 4 times, did you use it more than that?

      Hi Nate,
      Sorry for the late response but, don't worry, your nose will go down. It's just swollen due to the surgery. In time, you'll be back to normal. I don't think there really is a limit on how often you should use the spray. I think you can even use it hourly. It will help, believe me! I used it more than 3-4 times per day for sure.
      Have you had the splints removed yet?

      No worries 🙂
      Thanks for the reply, yeah I had my splints removed 5 days ago which was a week after the operation.
      The week having the splints in was easily one of the worst weeks of my life.
      I had a lot of difficulty breathing, felt really hot at night, was getting dehydrated quite easily so I had to drink a lot of water, was really dizzy and had a lot of facial/jaw/gum and teeth pain,
      Since having the splints taken out all that has pretty much cleared up, except still feeling a little bit dizzy at times and a little bit of depression, im guessing both of those may be tied to taking some endone.
      Perhaps it just didn’t agree with my body.
      I remember when I went in to have the splints removed, it looked an felt like one side of my splints was up further in one nostril than the other.
      I asked my surgeon was that meant to be like that and he said no it wasn’t and that they should’ve been even.
      Then when he checked he said “oh yeah it looks like it shifted a bit.
      Honestly it felt like it was almost touching the back of my throat.

    Really glad you got it fixed out, would it be possible if you could tell me if the insurance helped you out with the cost. I am really interested to know because I will most likely get a Septoplasty because my nose if broken and crooks to one side which in result caused me to have problems breathing.

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kostas, if your breathing is compromised due to your nose issues then insurance should help pay for the surgery costs. Another issue to consider is that typical insurances these days have high deductibles. If you haven't had any extensive medical work done this year yet then you may have to make up the full deductible before insurance pays anything. It could be in the thousands but your insurance company will tell you. Also remember that you cannot assume that a septoplasty will straighten the outward appearance of your nose. For me it certainly helped but the only way to completely straighten a nose is to have a rhinoplasty which is cosmetic which is not covered by insurance.
      So, your first step is to talk to your insurance provider and make sure they will cover some of the costs. They will talk to you about your deductible and how much you will have to shell out. My best advice is to read my articles on my website and this will guide you in the right direction. Here is the first one which talks about preparing for your septoplasty - totallyuniquelife.com/preparing-for-septoplasty-surgery/ . Then you can read the others about the experience of the surgery day and recovery. Good luck and keep me updated!

    Hi Bob. I'm curious as to the success of your turbinoplasty portion of your surgery. We're you feeling stuffed up prior to the surgery and how are you now, still felling plugged up in your nose? Also, did it impact your sleeping? I find that I cannot breathe through my nose and once this is done I should be able to nose breathe at night and help my sleeping and or snoring? I'm booked for May surgery and doing research. My nose looks very similar to yours. Other than better air flow through your nose. What are some of the benefits post surgery for you? Thank you, I appreciate your videos and blog posts.

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rick,
      Good luck with your upcoming surgery! I definitely breathe a whole lot easier through both nostrils now. I definitely felt stuffed up prior to my surgery and my air flow is greatly improved post-surgery. I still think I mouth-breathe at night (according to my wife) and that's probably because I am so trained after sleeping for so many years with the obstruction in my nose.
      So, yes, my breathing is definitely improved post-surgery and my nose does look slightly better. Definitely worth the surgery in my opinion.

    I assumed a septoplasty would straighten my nose. I asked my ENT and he said "no" and said I need a rhinoplasty which they want to charge $12k extra for out of pocket. Part of me wonders if they're trying to scam me and earn more money on top of what my insurance will pay for the simple septoplasty. It doesn't make sense to have to pay $12k more to have the nose straightened on top of what they're already doing.

    Im getting this surgery May 23rd. I also am having splints for a week. When the splints are in and you religiously use nasal spray are you able to get some air flow through your nose whether its a small amount or not because my ent advised me there are straw like tubes that do allow air flow.

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @heidimorgan5024 Good luck with your surgery in a week! If memory serves there isn't a lot of airflow but if the saline spray is getting through there must be some. Your nose also drains even though you are told not to blow your nose at all when the splints are in. So that also tells me there is definitely some air flow. I would just take the advice of your ENT. He/she will know what is best for you. Good luck and I'll tell ya, it will be worth it!

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Choco, it certainly depends on what you want to get out of the surgery. If you are looking to be able to breathe properly the septoplasty will do the job and insurance will look favorably on this type of surgery. Rhinoplasty is another animal as far as insurance is concerned as they deem it cosmetic so you'll have to foot the total bill. I was fortunate in that the septoplasty did help improve the look of my nose but that isn't the intent of a septoplasty.
      Good luck in whatever you choose and if you do end up doing the rhinoplasty I'd be interested in what the charges ended up being. Probably a pretty penny I would presume.

Noticeably better looking when I point a flashlight up there, but my septum still looks curved. If anybody else felt the same way please let me know what the results were. Did you need a revision? It might also make sense to go back to your doctor for a quick checkup and let him/her know what you are feeling. Please fill me in on what your doctor has to say.
      Good luck,
      Bob

      @@TotallyUniqueLife I will be calling on Monday to ask him. Also, did you have any nosebleed three weeks post op? How long and how often did you use the nasal rinse to irrigate your nose? Did you use the mupirocin ointment and if so how long? Lastly, I’m a side sleeper. How long did you elevate your head? I am a side sleeper. I’m curious. I could not find any answers online. Thanks for responding.

      Hi Mary Ann, I don't recall ever getting any nosebleeds. I used my nasal rinse VERY often, maybe even every hour at first. It especially helped when they took out the splints. They came out very easily with no pain whatsoever. I do remember using the ointment you mentioned and I used it as directed by the doctor. It has been almost 3 years since the surgery so it's hard to remember all of the details. As far as elevating my head I think it was just for a few weeks after the surgery. I also sleep on my side.
      Anyway, good luck with your recovery! If you read my articles (which are mentioned in the description with links) there is a lot more information.

    I’ve done a lot of reading and some surgeons say septo plasty doesn’t change the appearance and others say it does. I think it just depends where your nose is crooked. If it’s the top 1/3 (the bones), no but if it’s the bottom 2/3rds (cartilage) yes.
    I also think many surgeons would rather try to convince you into paying more money by saying “only a septo rhinoplasty will straighten your nose” to make more money.

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sal, well I guess I had an honorable surgeon (ENT). I think he went above and beyond since he was already in there performing the work. My nostril was 95% blocked so my septum really needed straightening. My nose appeared to be crooked the whole length. In any case, he killed 2 birds with one stone. My nose got straighter and I can breathe!

    I broke my nose quite a while ago, and haven't been hospital. I have a deviated septum and my nose is crooked. Just like to know if septoplasty alone will straighten the outside external appearance of my nose a bit or has no change.

      @TotallyUniqueLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry for responding late but just noticed it. I would say that septoplasty alone will probably not totally straighten your nose but it did help me. My doctor went out of his way to help the appearance of my nose. It's hard to say but speak to your doctor. I'm sure he will tell you what my doctor told me. He made no promises of straightening my nose, just to ensure I could breathe out of both nostrils after the surgery. I am extremely happy with the results and not having to pony up for a rhinoplasty. Your doctor will know for sure but good luck!

    Update after 1 year? I am having septoplasty with turbinate reduction in week but I am afraid of getting ENS. Saw some people on youtube that got 10% of their turbinates reduced and they got ENS which destroyed their life completely so I will not take that risk od getting ENS and will cancel my turbinate reduction. I will only get deviated septum surgery done and then I will try to get my turbinates rid of infection by changing diet or using some sprays...

    • @TotallyUniqueLife

      Hi, I have no regrets at all and have been breathing well now since the surgery. Honestly, I had to look up ENS and what it actually was. I have none of the symptoms mentioned. My ENT never even mentioned the possibility of getting ENS after the septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery. If it is a concern of yours then you should consult with your ENT and get his opinion. Once again, I have no regrets at all! :-)

      Hi, it wasn't bad at all honestly. They gave me percosets for the pain but I only took one on the first day. Advil worked after that. A lot of people talk about the pain from removing the splints but if you use a lot of saline in the first week they will slide right out. Definitely not a high pain procedure but I'm sure others might have a different story.

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to have someone drive you home after the procedure as you are still under the effects of anesthesia. It is a same-day procedure so you don't have to stay in a hospital overnight or anything. You are just wiped out afterwards and in a little pain but you are given medication for that. To be honest, for me it was not that bad but others may have other experiences.

    I didnt know septoplasty changes the outside look of the nose

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @eS, as you can see from the final result of my nose, for me it did. It isn't perfect but it is straighter. Based on what my ENT told me, by straightening out the septum so that I can breathe better ultimately changed the outward appearance of my nose as well. It isn't a rhinoplasty but it was covered by my insurance and now I can breathe. I had heard that a septoplasty could change the outward appearance of a nose and I think I have proved it with my septoplasty. It isn't that perfect nose that some might be looking for but for me it was a resounding success.

      @@TotallyUniqueLifemy doctor also Said that septoplasty doesn't change my nose shape from outside But I wish my nose look straighten as yours

    • @TotallyUniqueLife
      @TotallyUniqueLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sonia, my doctor also told me prior to surgery that it would not change the outward shape of my nose. But he also said after the surgery in the follow-up appt that he tries to undersell and overdeliver. If you really think about it, if your septum is straightened out, chances are, your nose will also look straighter. It isn't a rhinoplasty but my insurance paid for it to enhance my breathing. Your doctor is always going to say that to you because the goal of the operation is to enhance your breathing by opening up the septum so you can breathe better through your nose. It isn't to straighten your nose as that would be considered plastic surgery.
      My suggestion is to have the surgery done to enhance your breathing and, as a byproduct, it may just straighten out your nose a bit at the same time.
      Best,
      Bob
