I'm genuinely surprised how much they are laughing at her and dr phil is making fun of her. People who live like this arent just lazy, they usually have underlying issues. She has mentioned several times in this video that shes depressed, upset, disorganized and emotionally drained from things that happened in her life. If this was any other person we all would feel bad and want to help. But because her outlet is a messy house, we make fun of her? She needs help

I suspect she has a hoarding problem. It’s under the umbrella of obsessive compulsive disorder. It’s a complex mental health illness that stems from a trigger of trauma either in childhood or adulthood. Loss of a loved one is usually the trigger in adulthood. It’s a deep seeded need to cling to everything and assign an emotional value to every material item she has. It’s also an attempt to control everything that she can control, including keeping everything because it’s a replacement for what she couldn’t control (or can’t - example you can’t control an abuser in childhood, you are a victim/survivor, you can’t control someone dying when they do, you can’t control loosing someone.)

When a college student, I got invited for Thanksgiving to my dorm roommate's house. She and I hit it off from the start, me being an eccentric loner type, and she being a hippie love child. After a 16 hour non-stop drive, we arrived at her suburban Levittown home to find her parents engaged in their weekly cleaning routine, smoking grass, listening to psychedelic rock, and in the nude except for jewelry! Maybe you had to have been there, but in 1969, it seemed the chill thing to do.

There have been some points where I have been messier than that but I somehow clean it all up. But the husband should seriously stop complaining and clean it up himself if he doesn’t like living in that messy house.

Hoarding, and she says she has ADD. I can fully understand her mental state. In ADHD (they no longer call it ADD) there is a phenomena called the "Wall of Awful" which eventually leads to anxiety/depression and it's an internal emotional boundary to completing tasks. The state of her house is triggering this. She needs some big therapy, and then some executive function coaching to help her because she literally can't start.

I haven't seen all of this show. I daresay she needs help to overcome her hoarding habits which are usually rooted in loss and trauma. However, I know what she means here. I have the health problems she mentioned. I was also in an abusive marriage and that man took delight in living like an animal and screaming at me for not keeping it tidy. I worked, did 100% of the childcare and could never make visible inroads on the cleaning despite staying up until 4am at least once per week. Within 24hrs it looked the same again. If I'd had more children, my home would likely have looked like this one.
Now I am actually a single mom and despite the fact that that my daughter has learned behaviour from him, our home is hygienic and happy. This man said in one clip he "would do anything" to give his kids a better life. Anything except roll up your sleeves and help when your wife is saying over and over again "I'm overwhelmed"? That is what she meant by living like a single mom. And she's right.

Now they’re absolutely surrounded by filth and clutter, as well as trying to handle the regular challenges of being a young teen and preteen. It’s clear the parents haven’t raised them in any way, shape or form that would allow them to tackle a situation like this- not that any kid should have to take on a house at this level.

This lady most likely has some level of depression, maybe some trauma in the past (haven’t watched the full episode) and hoarding tendencies as a result. Some people’s homes are a mess because that’s how they feel in the inside. That’s what they feel they deserve. Dr. Phil should have realised that it’s a mental issue and not parade her around on the stage making condescending faces like she’s just a lazy person and a ‘bad wife’.

Having members of your family not pulling their weight with household chores doesn't help either, neither does her spouses attitude, running a house takes everyone to pitch in not leave it to one person who already has an unpredictable medical condition. Until you have suffered from it for years yourself & walked in her shoes you're in no position to judge.

Here's an idea: I work full time, and clean my home everyday. I also have had 7 children. I put myself first and rarely ever initiate help with any cleaning. She is so far behind and doesn't know where to begin. She is pointing her finger when she should be making a plan. She needs to do it herself and stop obsessing on the way she's being treated and blaming things and people around her. 15 minutes work and 15 minutes rest; repeat until it's clean. That's not too difficult no matter how overwhelmed and exhausted she is.
