It would be hard to keep marching in step whilst playing in tune, in correct time with so many others. I couldn't even manage just trying to march in step with other kids at school when they made us march in formation. Let alone play or sing whilst marching. I lost it with O E oppressive school master and yelled "Give me a break! I can only do one thing at a time! Either walk or play music but not both at once!". That resulted in detention. But I got out of marching in step, a skill I always found impossible to master. But it looks good when others can do this so well. Perfect sync. Not one foot out of time, all o we place.... How do they manage to get it so right?
Marching in time to a pipe band is easy. Start on the left foot and listen to the bass drum. All bands start off on the left foot, even though the order "By the right " or "by the centre" is given , that refers to where you take you dressing IE Dress to the right means stay in line with the person to your right.
