As a Marine for 8 years. Some Marines can really sing the shit out of cadence. To the point that when you told to halt. You realize that 26 Marines in perfect formation and in unison just ran 5 miles and you feel great. I miss those times when nobody saw color. We were all just USMC green.

It’s very interesting to me that men of all races can be in the heat of battle, competition, weathering some type of disaster or tribulation together, etc. and see a brother in one another….yet once back in what we call “normal society” we’re almost forced to see color again smh

I respect your words. My experience is that in the Marines we are taught from day one that we Marines are all USMC green. Until we Americans stop seeing color in one another or in my opinion stop with Hispanic, black, Asian Pacific months, classes, quotas ext etc and realize that it’s just American history. Good and bad but learn from our past so we never make those mistakes again. But hate fills our higher education now and divides us even more. I sure hope I’m wrong but I believe that a civil war or a race war is coming and when it does American civilians will see the horror of war and hate…first hand and wonder why are we fighting our fellow Americans who bleed red regardless of the color of our skin.
As a young Marine living in California at the time I will always remember the words of Rodney King “Can’t we all just get along.” I hope one day we never teach colors in kindergarten. So the next American generation NEVER sees color except red white and blue.

I was in the army in Germany in the late seventies. Our first sergeant was a big man by the name of first sergeant Rentz. He was a former drill sergeant. He taught our troop all kinds of specialty marches winning all the march contests on base. He had soul and rythim like no one else. I think back to all my fond memories of him. I was even his driver for a while. Anybody lucky enough to be under his command will have the same fond memories of him. We all called him Pops.

i got drilled in the German Navy Eckernförde, Flensburg, Wilhelmshaven.
The best our navy mimicked from the yanks was the marching style.. .i had so much fun in bootcamp. Also liked the "Riflegymnastics"
Also, i would have walked through fire for our drill seargent. He was a true salty sailor and joined every drill - when we made 40 pushups, he would make 50.. and he was 20 yrs older than the rest of us.. that inspires loyalty we would try hard not to let that man down.
Respect to the USMC for knowing only one color! brothers in arms gotta be brothers!
Too bad society is not taking an example on that. I totally understand how people can be lost after their service. It is tragic.

I did know to stand at attention from watching the funeral for President Kennedy and from dad insisting and showing me how to stand for the National anthem. I always stand at attention when I hear the National Anthem broadcast from out local military base in Anchorage.. My birthday is today and I am 63 today. I miss him.

If you have time left before retirement, it is not too late to apply for an overseas assignment. The only bad thing is they tax your moving expenses as income, which thoroughly sucks.
I still managed to visit other countries, even with the inplace COVID restrictions.

After donating blood, our DI taught us a shuffle like that; all the way back to the company area, some "others" say us; the next day on our little run across the parade field at Ft Ord, our DI called out the cadence on the entire company; everyone "out of step" was immediately doing push ups, and watch us march on off the field. A little fun, under all those pressures.

I did wear the Khakis and had PV2 stripes on them too, by the time I made PFC they were phased out, so where the Khakis. We went to the BDU’s and the gray/green shirts with dress greens and black sweater. And that Kaserne, definitely reminds me of Germany. Martin Sheen in the movie reminds me of my dad who retired from the Army as a 1st Sergeant. Good times!

Racism was never an issue in my old high school. I do remember our teacher bringing this in for us to see. It was a kind of movie that you just can't help but voice your own opinion about it.

+ItaloCanadese On that I agree - it only became an issue when the governments stepped in

yeah it wasn't an issue of you were white. kinda sucked otherwise. segregation, lynching, lower pay, shitty jobs, shitty education. .. u get the idea.

coolhari2000 no what he is probably saying is,, see I'm around 30 years old and when I was in school we all got along and only recently in the past 9to10 years has race come back in force through the media narrative

Valid point of view. however, shit was worse back then, it just didn't make news. thanks to social media, cheaper cameras, more outlets etc have brought it into light. that's all.

So many folks have used Sam Cooke's Music in their Movies. This one, Animal House, Breathless, Malcolm X. About 1 1/2 Years Ago a Young Lady named Shona McGarty who acts on The UK Soap Opera Eastenders did a Charity Show and did an amazing performance of "Change Gonna Come".

this was my movie. the first time I saw it was in my ROTC class. i actually cried it was so sad to me.
My drillteam actually learned this cadence and we did a pretty good job imitating them.
