I think the reason why Atem was like that, at the beggining, is because he was trapped inside the puzzle for several thousands years (3 thousand in the japanese version, 5 thousand in the english one) alonside the dark magic he seal inside, to save the world (Zorc) but even in the manga, before the card game took over and lighten the tone, you can see that he was already starting to change and reconect with his humanity

In the manga, Kaiba lost his first duel to Yugi and as a result, he was forced to experience the torture he put his cards through. This experience inspired him to create Solid Vision as well as to create the punishment game for Death-T 4. Because he doesn't experience that Punishment Game in the anime, how he gets the idea for Solid Vision is unknown.
Apparently being the "King of Games" also makes you a black belt in karate lol. Gives you super strength in general too judging by the way he stopped several bookshelves that were about to fall onto him using only the back of his hand.
Old Kaiba saying "what are you gonna do in two turns?" Hits SO different in modern, where competition only needs one turn to win and we got finals won with an Exodia. It's mind boggling. Old school Kaiba would melt if plucked into the current.
In the Manga that guy with the gun actually does light the Vodka on fire and dies The original concept of Yu-Gi-Oh was Horror/Hobby Battle manga The Hobby was overall Gaming culture that's games of all kinds The horror came from the Horrific punishments Dark Yugi would give to Cheaters and Other bad guys The Shadow Games started as a test for the Soul, Dark Yugi used the Yami no Game to punish evil While Dark Bakura just wanted to steal souls with Bakura just like in Duel Monsters being the final villain before Atem would leave However, that's Not where the story ends
Not quite. Since Toei's anime adaption is based on the first 7 volumes of the manga, certain events within are canon, but not everything and not as presented. The anime took several liberties with characters and events, and even some things that weren't changed can be dismissed due to "Early Installment Weirdness." Early Kaiba comes to mind.
@@OtakuAudioRedux It is the beginning of the Manga, so it is not only considered Canon, It is Canon in the most literal sense but the word canon is so overused that most dont know that. My theory is that resisting a game against Yami Yugi must be almost impossible. I'm sure he lures you in a way you could not resist. He just says the exact things that trigger the response of the opponent.
@@ripnephils148i think that too. Most of them get thrown off at this used to be small wimp kid they just beat up or cheated turn into this confident but sadistic looking guy
I always wanted to see what would happen if a good person played a Game of Darkness. After all, their true good nature would simply show up and not open the door to darkness. My guess is that Yami Yugi would lose and no one would get hurt. But it would still be interesting.
It’s an interesting question, early yugioh has its roots in horror, particularly, at least in my opinion, mid 20th century horror comics (ec, og tales from the crypt, that kind of stuff). Those stories tend to feature central characters who are unrepentant assholes who meet their comeuppance at the end of the story, usually fatal through some supernatural means. These early yugioh one off villains are usually people who either use physical strength or societal position to be absolute pieces of shit to everyone around them, at thusly get their due at the hands of yami. I think the answer to your question is a little anticlimactic though. A good person, or even just a person who isn’t a massive jerk would never even play in a shadow game against yami because they wouldn’t get into the situation we’re such an event would trigger in the first place, simply because of personality.
Depends on how you look at games of darkness. With their original implementation, I think, regardless of who loses nothing will happen, but with the way they presented later on the punishment for the loser is mandatory and is chosen by the initiator of the game, so regardless of your good heart you will suffer if millennium item holder decides to up the stakes
a good person wouldn't be in a situation where they'd play a shadow game against yami because yami never plays shadow games against people who hasn't wronged him/yugi/his friends. but even so, since yami is the one in control/host of the game, he could probably just tone down, or even cancel the punishment 💀
We legit see that twice in season zero. First with shadi, shadi wasn't evil, he simply wanted to make sure the melenium puzzle didn't end up in the wrong hands. 2ed with kaiba's butler The butler knew kaiba from when kaiba use to be good and he was doing all he knew to do to try to save kaiba as he remembered him
Though it still took him (begrudgingly at first) taking the Signers to Satellite and witnessing Martha's sacrifice to break out of old habits and the fascist mindset that he (and a lot of Neo Domino City had at the time) had on Satellite.
Love how he's just had the beat down of his life and his friends are passed out and yugi is just like yeah wow found my puzzle piece, lemme just finish this puzzle real quick 😂
It feels so strange to not hear the super deep Dan Green/LittleKuriboh voice for Yami Yugi, but it’s also *extremely* funny hearing it juxtaposed against how batshit insane Yami Yugi is in the manga/season 0
I love the way they colored Yami's eyes in this series, it's so damn fascinating. Also, I will admit I've never watched the 2000 version in sub, but I like this Yami's voice better, there's just something there the 2000's version didn't have.
Little fact: when a characters eyes are colored dark with no pupil, it shows that they do not give any types of shits or fucks. They will kill you one way or another.
Kind of insane to think about this show and the difference in characters. Nevermind the obvious difference of why Kaiba’s hair is green instead of brown, (which you gotta wonder if Noah was a subtle reference to this older design) I’m talking about the Pharaoh going from a relatively mild albeit passionate gamer with a protective streak in the main series to an out and out PSYCHOPATH in season 0. Like seriously, this dude is TERRIFYING 😂
Seems like she was the only person who truly knew who she was against and forfeited, she also seemed sorry for shed done, I guess thats why Atem spared her.
6:48 In the manga, the escapee accidentally lit himself on fire after making the lighter fall off the hand he was pouring the drink and the fire was real.
I kinda wish it was. In the 90's, it was so rare to see a villainous main character type trope that an Atem like this on Duel Monsters would be a fresh breather to see among the anime
dark yugi: ok you kidnapped anzu for the last time.... here is the game: i will put live and blank bullets in this shotgun in a random order.... you can point at me or yourself and shoot, but if you miss the shot or shoot me with a blank then its my turn to shoot
Yep. Yugioh was originally supposed to be much more sinister and darker than the reboot of this to the Duel Monsters anime. Makes you wonder how things would had gone.
Ok how much memory do the 2 yugis share? Lil yugi has no recollections of dark yugis shenanigans but dark yugi seems to have the same memory as yugi(he remembers grandpa's advice and calls him grandpa out of instinct and treats all his friends with the same respect normal yugi has for them), lil yugi's feelings affected him midgame when he faced shadi and everytime he comes out he already knows wtf going on and get revenge
Prior to Yugi accepting Atem as part of his life, he blacked out completely and was, therefore, unable to see anything Atem did in his body. The reverse is not true, however. Atem had full access to Yugi's memories and feelings even when he's not actively controlling his host's body. What this meant though is Atem is more susceptible to little Yugi's influence; since he sees, feels, and interacts with everything Yugi had done and is doing. Atem's punishments and methods for his games change quite remarkably throughout the season as a result. In episode 1, he straightup throws a guy out of a building for beating up his friends while later villains get away with lighter punishments and experience fairer games.
This is the COOL ass Yugioh I remember, the one where when Yugi transforms he just becomes this sadistic game obsessed master of mindfuckery. I’m guessing this adapts the early parts of the manga before Duel Monsters was the main focus…
God I've always wondered what exactly Season 0 looked like, couldn't find it anywhere. I have one volume of the manga (the first one I think, the one with the lighter, splitting a dice in half, and the nitroglycerin in ice "game"), but I never saw the actual season 0. Man, where is the box set so I can own this??
I’m surprised- you’re not the first person to ask about the box set! Personally I’ve always watched it through TH-cam (there was even an 11.5 hour upload of the entire show for a while, but I think that was taken down.) I’m not sure if box sets are available anymore because if Toei Animation has really chosen to upload it all to the Internet Archive for free, and that’s not just someone pretending to be them, it means they’re no longer interested in making money off it. We can hope!
I saw a box sett once online but it looked very shady so I kever bought it. I used illegal pirates websites to watch season 0, and own all manga of season 0. In the manga there is more stuff that the anime didnt adapted from the manga
Fun fact: the shadow realm was made up for censorship. Originally, they straight-up died. Same with the "punishments" in season 0 - in the anime, they're illusions. But in the manga, they happen for real. Because yugioh was originally of the horror genre
I can never get tired of Yami inflicting Penalty Games on those deserving to be punished. Especially in the manga version although brutal and cruel - they definitely have it coming. Considering upon the many criminals, bullies, delinquents, abusers, crooks, jerks, and/or perverts that city (worldbuilding) have in the anime and manga respectively.

This is so much more interesting than all the typical yughio stuff that I never got into. This feels more like a show about exorcisms through various games if anything, lol.
Season 1 Kaiba: (Hah, 3 blue eyes! No way he can win! Almost like that time he drew all cards of exodia, that was awful. But there’s no way he could do it again-) “IT DOES HAVE THE LEGENDARY… EXODIA!” (GODDAMMIT)
I love how Bakura's dice exploding suddenly makes his roll invalid for some reason. This series has been making shit up on the fly since literally day one 😂😂
Okay real talk on the first episode, not only did Yugi not shuffle the deck in front of Ushio he also didn't let his opponent cut the deck. If I were Ushio I would also be a "sore loser" and call cheats lmao.
The thing that makes me wonder. Did yami stack that deck in order of the card suites? So when he slide down laying the cards he would know where to grab high values?
47:53 I love how he's shattered at least twenty minds on this show, and caused lasting mental damage to multiple people. But a grown woman handeling glass? No no no. Safety first. ☝
I mean, we kinda had him. Season 1 Atem was ruthless. He gunned straight for Weevil to punish him for tossing Exodia, took out the fake Kaiba, beat Yami Bakura (in the anime), and crushed Panik. He told Kaiba to do a flip off the tower at Duelist Kingdom and was ready to push him, only stopping because Yugi made him. He got more heroic as time went on, but majorly screwed up against Raphael, and without Yugi (or Teá)... well, legends state he'd still be using Berserker Soul against Weevil.

Fun fact: That first High School bully, Tetsu Ushio, actually turns out to be Tetsu Trudge from 5Ds! It’s canon. Looks like Dark Yugi’s mindbreak instilled some good nature in the guy.

@Necfreon It's been theorized that the mind crush only really permanently affects/destroys those who are truly evil. Notice how Panik and Kaibas imposter were killed instantly whereas Kaiba and Ushio were just misguided bullied but deep down they weren't really evil. Yami/Atem was a monster in Season 0, but he had a heart of gold in his own way.
He only went after evil doers and those who would abuse people for their own selfish gains.

@Lightningstrike1220 That makes Season 0 Yami Yugi sound like Light from Death Note lol

That one Indian chick was being judged and she honored her loss gracefully knowing she was beaten. Even though she held Tea hostage, Yami did not punish her, and said she was a wonderful opponent.

He didn't lose those powers. Every millenium item posseses the power to start a Shadow Game where monsters and pain become reality.
Lol "Domain Expansion, King of Games"
This series is considered cannon, Yugi mentions when Joey stole a piece of his millenium puzzle and got beat up by the school bully.
it's also the first chapter of the manga.
so who knows.
I definitely remember that during the first Arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters where we saw flashbacks to the time Joey and Tristan were bullies to Yugi
Are we not gonna talk about how that school bully became a security guard with an iconic yet busted boss monster?
@@OtakuAudioRedux It is the beginning of the Manga, so it is not only considered Canon, It is Canon in the most literal sense but the word canon is so overused that most dont know that.
Canon is the opposite of Fan fiction and derivative works. This is the work of the original creator of Yu-Gi-Oh that means it is canon.
The later Yu Gi Oh Series like GX, 5d´s and so on were not worked on by Kazuki Takahashi, making them not Canon as they are derivative works of other people based on Kazuki´s.

I found more interesting fact. In Doraemon the Movie: Nobita and The Legend of the King of the Sun, Prince Tio(his face looks exactly same as Nobita Nobi) is the voice of Megumi Ogata. Which is a unique coincidence that she's the role as the king(he's prince at first) from the past time.
"Gemu no jikanda" is one of the most catchy lines in the show. Yami sounds so cool whenever he says it
Why are they even accepting to play? "Yeah I'm about to commit murder but sure, in the meantime let's play a game"
Pride. While Atem looks more confident than little Yugi, he isn't noticeably taller than him and he is still a scrawny boy. Most of Atem's opponents were incredibly narcissistic and prideful. The others who weren't, Atem had legitimately threatened into participating.
My theory is that resisting a game against Yami Yugi must be almost impossible. I'm sure he lures you in a way you could not resist. He just says the exact things that trigger the response of the opponent.
Yeah I'm pretty sure Atem would force them into the game anyway XD

Yu-Gi-Oh translates to king of games. So yeah, Yami playing many kinds of games actually pretty spot on 😁
I always wanted to see what would happen if a good person played a Game of Darkness.
