Thanks for putting so much love in to this video. For me this is my favourite game of all time. I picked a PS5 up on launch day and I’m in ore of all the amazing games at hand. But the reason why I love streets of rage 1 so much is down to my friendship with my best friend, who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. Having Muscular dystrophy sadly meant that friend was confined to a wheelchair and his muscle wastage meant he was very limited to the things he could do. So in 1991 when Streets of Rage came out we were both 12 years old. I would sleep at his house and we would play SoR after breakfast, take a break for lunch, watch a bit of wrestling then go and play outside and play with his remote control cars. After that we would be back in playing SoR. This amazing love affair with SoR lasted years, we finished the game hundreds of times. The music, the level design, the 3 amazing characters, the level bosses and then to the final boss- so iconic on so many levels. (Pardon the pun) In 1999 my friend passed away at the age of 20. Sadly the muscle wasting disease took him way too soon. Since then I’ve bought SoR on the PS4 and the Switch. Every week or so, in remembrance of my amazing friend I get the urge to fire the game up. Just hearing that music takes me to a very warm, comforting time. A time that holds so many amazing nostalgic moments, not just for playing that amazing game, but remembering my childhood best mate. God bless you, James. Love u always brother xxx
I really like that overview of the SOR history. The only thing i dislike is that you with no word talk about the censorship that Sega US forced on the SOR saga. Especially the butchering of the original japanese story of SOR3 is a shame.
That censorship, we Europeans had to endure as well. Goddamn liberal political correctness... there are so many Kim Jong-uns in Western countries that always have to ruin everything.
@@mgm6229 There's a difference between needless censorship and taking out things which are actually a bit dodgy. Imagine Ash was a black man who sang slave songs and you killed him by hanging him from a burning cross. That's what the real Ash character feels like to the gay community. It's a pretty nasty stereotype which is portrayed as a villain.
Cheers dude :) you keep on commenting ;) But seriously, at least once a year me and my friends get together and play through the first one and sometimes the 2nd one. Great games
Streets of Rage 3 is a bad western hack job of a game with garish recolours, censored sprites, a butchered 6th level, missing title animation and all-round unfairly jacked up difficulty. Play the real version, Bare Knuckle 3 if you can, it's easily the definitive SoR experience.
H. M. That explains Ash and the dominatrixes, but it doesn't explain the horrendous recolouring of the main characters or the extreme jacking up of the difficulty.
never understood the recoloring. they should have kept skates yellow shirt/blazes red dress/axles blue shirt cause those were signature. it's like If sub-zero or scorpion changed colors. people would flip shit!
I was disappointed that Adam was no longer playable in the sequels. His flying kick animation always seemed the most satisfying when it connected with an enemy, plus his reverse attack was the best.
I couldn't even make it through the video without pausing and firing up the soundtrack. Damn if it isn't in the top 10 video game soundtracks of all time. Just brilliant.
Streets of rage 2 in my opinion is the greatest side scrolling beat em up ever made period. And the soundtrack is my favourite ever on a video game. Flawless game .
I remember playing Streets of Rage on a friends Megadrive when the game was new but at the time it didn't feel like a big deal. When I picked up Streets of Rage 2 after a hospital appointment when I was 14...it blew me away. Why the characters have never been in any one one fighting series I have no idea. I would have though Capcom or SNK would have purchased the rights to the characters long ago.
James Stanger thats not the worse idea lol a good ol' secret character hidden in a street fighter game would defo get a purchase from me lol perhaps everyone should had voted Axel, Blaze or Adam for the new characters in Smash bros hahaha
11:23.. Shiva is still SHIVA in the Japanese version. "Ash" is the transvestite that was taken out of the US/EU version. Also you neglected to mention that Shiva was introduced as a new villain char in SoR2 and returning villain in SoR3.
After learning to speed-run streets of rage 2 and 3, I've come actually like streets of rage 3 more than 2. The difficulty curve on hard compared to 2 is just HUGE. That's what drew me in to learn to run 3 :). Great video by the way. Loved every second of it. Keep it up.
SOR 3 was definitely the best and especially the soundtrack you can tell that Yuzo put effort into this and than of his previous work like it was definitely next level especially if you’re into electronic music
in streets of rage 3 - each character has a hidden super move all weapons Zan picks up turns into an energy ball which he can throw shiva and roo/joey cannot pick up weapons if i'm not mistaken you can also play as Ash if you hold A after beating him till the next round begins and finally, "NAN-CHA-KA!!!"
Good summary. With Sonic Mania around the corner, I can only hope there will be interest in other 2d sequels in glorious pixel art. A Streets Of Rage sequel with more colors and improved animations (but without losing the 90's aesthetics) would be amazing.
Yes. That was the best part! Everyone specialized in a different weapon type, and plane switching Guardian Heroes style. And Blaze with three stars was a monster! She would backflip and slide all over the place! It took me awhile to truly appreciate (especially the soundtrack) but BK 3 had the most gameplay depth and is the most rewarding to play. 2 had the looks and sound, but 3 had the best gameplay! But I can only recommend the Japanese version of 3 for unaltered.
@@Hotobu The US version has a better difficulty arc actually. Similar to other games. I.e., Guardian Heroes on Saturn - Treasure tweaked the US version for much more robust challenge on Hard. Too bad Streets of Rage 3 is inferior to Bare Knuckle 3 in almost every other way. BK3's sprites/characters/details with SoR 3's pacing, enemy specs, and difficulty arc would be the best combination.
Excellent review. I love SOR 1 and 2, but not 3. And I absolutely love Remake! Me and my friends reviewed all three games on the Genesis and we also reviewed Remake. On my collab channel ST2K, I did an LP of Remake. In my review of SOR3, I thought the reason why it was game over after I defeated the fake Chief of Police Shiva was because I was playing on Normal difficulty. I was wrong, I need to go back and add an annotation lol. SOR 1 & 2 is easily my favorite side scrolling fighting game of all time. I hold those games near and dear to my heart. The soundtrack is epic too in 1 and 2. Thank you for an excellent review.
Ron Mower And thank you for an epic comment :) I am glad you got so much enjoyment out of the video, yes streets of rage 1 + 2 are some of the greatest games ever made. and for the soundtrack, well I just bought the Vinyl (and I do not own a record player lol)
Because Sega, sadly... :( Not that Nintendo would be so different outside of the hugest franchises like Mario or Zelda, but even those seem to be getting rather stale. It's my opinion only (since I know it would be a Nintendo fan to take offence seeing this, haha), but I simply feel they're both shadows of their former selves. And unfortunately, that means I also feel SoR is best untouched. Let's leave the police and the syndicate to continue duking it out in 16-bit glory as it's a series that's aged extremely well. Alternatively, give Dynamite Cop a try with a friend for a few cheap laughs.
I'd love for a new streets of rage. They should do it with hi res sprites, more frames of animation etc not 3D. Classic 2D style but looking a bit nicer. The only characters should be Axel, blaze, max and Adam (ok, maybe skate too).
Watching this video today. I can't recognize the host. You've changed so much Dan and it gives me hope and inspires me to always be a little better in each video.
I skeptically played Streets of Rage 2 last year for the first time and I've always hated the beat'em up jonra that being said I had an absolute blast now that I have a 360 I want to get the Sega Master collection this game alone justifies its purchase
Absolutely. And if I recall correctly, the achievements in that collection are a really neat bonus. It's one of the only things I miss about Xbox Live since switching to Steam, since the achievement system is vastly superior to Steam's.
Good lord, that means you played SoR 2 for the first time USING AN XBOX 360 D-PAD? That's so incredibly tragic. One of the worst d-pads in game industry history. You actively ruined your experience in a precise 2D beat 'em up by playing it with the 360 controller's horrific digital pad. If that's the only way you played SoR 2, you haven't actually played it yet. Reminds me of people playing games like SoR 2 and Gunstar Heroes for the first time using a touchscreen d-pad on their phone/tablet, then later telling me those games (THOSE games) were "too hard to control the characters". Hahaha. Hahahaha. Input device makes ALL the difference in gaming, my friends.
Streets Of Rage 2 will forever be in my personal top 10. Maybe even top 5. I play it through at least twice a year. I can't stand the third one, though. The graphics are just unpleasant to look at, with the disco's flashing lights literally making me feel ill, and the music just wasn't up to snuff. Although, I actually never knew there was a third one because the only source of information about Sega games I had was a cheat book that predated the third game. So when I saw art from the third game in a religious studies text book in a section about violent media while scrolling through the pages years later, my mind was blown. When I eventually tracked down the game, I was very disappointed.
This is my absolute fave game series of all time and my FAVORITE soundtrack EVERRRR!! Have downloaded both 1 and 2 from the iPhone App Store and the soundtrack on iTunes. This video has brought back ALL of my memories playing this with my cousin every Friday after school after renting it at Blockbuster along with Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 3 attached, and ALSO Gunstar Heroes. Damn mannn!
Are we talking about the SNES as a whole? I agree the graphics and Sound are technically superior but what i am talking about in this video is that I believe that there is no similar side scrolling beat em ups on the snes that can touch this series... please prove me wrong, I love these type of games.
SNES can't handle the sprites or the deep bass and techno music. It's closest attempt is Final Fight but it's single player and only three enemies on screen before stuff really slows town. However the best effort would be Turtles in Time, great game and 2 player.
I have fond memories of playing Streets of Rage with my best friend. We'd sit for hours playing through the same damn levels over and over, since we never actually managed to complete the last stage. Even so, we enjoyed every minute of it!
Faves on the Mega Drive (Genesis for us Yanks :), Sword of Vermilion, Phantasy Star 2,3,4 , Golden Axe, Road Rash, MK and All 3 Streets of Rage games. SoR was the series I always went back to when I wanted to just mess so fools up and I loved it then and still do. SoR Remake by Bomber Games was phenomenal! I jumped on that as soon as I heard about it and man they did damn good job with the game. SoRR is now my fave SoR game in the series. Great video.....now I'ma go beat some punk ass!!
Love your channel, Your video game history vids are great! I literally get up every Sunday morning and watch a video with my coffee before I start my day.
Thought I'd come back and rewatch this. It's interesting to see how your commentary style has changed since then, but the visuals have always been impressive. :)
I remember convincing my best friends Mum to let us "test" his little brother's second hand copy of Streets of Rage 2 before she wrapped it up for Christmas, as she didn't want to risk it not working and not being able to take it back to the shops. So being the upstanding young chaps we were, we stayed up all night "testing" the shit out of that game. We "tested" all the levels, all the bosses, all the characters, the versus mode and the end credits several times. Didn't get so much as a thank you. Sigh.
She does sound ungrateful, what with you so generously willing to spend all night testing it. I bet you would have even been willing to take that work home with you.
I'm really enjoying this TH-cam series! I started backwards and worked my way down to this episode. You sound so much more subdued in this episode compared to the future one, made all the more ironic considering how this is your all-time favorite, haha ;)
Streets of Rage 2 is so replayable, I'm still playing it 24 years later, and on my iPhone while bored in meetings no less. It is 16-bit perfection in my book.
You have a great channel. I've watched several of your "Complete History" videos, and I always look at the running time first and think "Geez, that's just *too* long, I guess I'll just skip ahead when I get to the dull parts", but you know what, I always wind up watching the WHOLE thing (even that 1 hour and 15 minute METROID history). Very informative! I kind of freaked out when I saw your whole collection of console and handheld gaming platforms, thinking -- OMG, I have to spend all that money to get ALL the good games?!!" There's got to be some kind of console emulator software that will get rid of all that clutter and wiring. Maybe you should do a video on THAT.
I remember when you beat SoR2 on the hardest difficulty setting it unlocked an ultra hard 'Maniac' mode which gave even basic enemies massive life bars. Amazing game for the time and one of the best soundtracks ever.
A newer, better and more complete history has been made on this video now, check it out here th-cam.com/video/2W45KZsElLw/w-d-xo.html

(Pardon the pun)
In 1999 my friend passed away at the age of 20.
High Volage The loveable Ash.
The OST to these games pop into my head at some point every year. So awesome.
all the two player games rocked! this one is a classic.. fun gameplay! KEEP ON TUBING!
Cheers dude :) you keep on commenting ;)
But seriously, at least once a year me and my friends get together and play through the first one and sometimes the 2nd one. Great games
plan on it :P
Superb video sir! These are my favorite all time games myself! Ty for the video.
+mike C you are more than welcome. Plentt more to come
Streets of Rage 3 is a bad western hack job of a game with garish recolours, censored sprites, a butchered 6th level, missing title animation and all-round unfairly jacked up difficulty.
There is a translated version of Bare Knuckle 3 out there.
I recommend it to everyone.
It shows BK3 doesn't disappoint at all.
F*** yea! Gonna hunt that one down!
Justin Wilson maybe they felt red is too sexy for blaze
My fav game growing up. Cheers great vid.
Thanks glad you liked it 😀
I can't wait for Streets of Rage 4 to come out
Popping it in right now, great video !!!
Really enjoyed this - one of my all time fav series
Ahh thanks man :) Im glad y enjoyed it
I was disappointed that Adam was no longer playable in the sequels. His flying kick animation always seemed the most satisfying when it connected with an enemy, plus his reverse attack was the best.
It's that time my friend... Streets of Rage 4 is here
I saw the trailer with Axel and Blaze and it's all 2D. th-cam.com/video/M_bgPefCyfA/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, mate! This is one of the best game series ive ever played, and SoR2s Go straight is the best opening theme. Ever.
My favorite game of all time
I couldn't even make it through the video without pausing and firing up the soundtrack. Damn if it isn't in the top 10 video game soundtracks of all time. Just brilliant.
Who else came back for his new review for the 4th streets of rage
What an ace trip down memory lane. Thanks for this Dan! The music in SOR1 is still epic - back in the day it was ground-breaking for a console.
Streets of rage was bad ass. I like the fact that you had a good or bad ending.
Same here, when i discovered that as a kid. IT BLEW ME AWAY!
I am 10 and WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
Man I remember playing Streets of Rage so much as a youngster! This video really took me back, thanks so much! Feeling very nostalgic.
More than welcome buddy :) its why i do what I do
11:23.. Shiva is still SHIVA in the Japanese version. "Ash" is the transvestite that was taken out of the US/EU version. Also you neglected to mention that Shiva was introduced as a new villain char in SoR2 and returning villain in SoR3.
Ash is not a transvestite
I think Ash was a cross dresser?
Ash was just a flaming stereotype of a homosexual from the 90s era
What he said, if you rewatch the video, is that Ash will be your first boss on BKIII, OR Shiva in SoR3.
I almost made the same mistake you did.
14:19
After learning to speed-run streets of rage 2 and 3, I've come actually like streets of rage 3 more than 2. The difficulty curve on hard compared to 2 is just HUGE. That's what drew me in to learn to run 3 :).
Great video by the way. Loved every second of it. Keep it up.
There’s now an official streets of rage 4 in production...
There...my work is done.
Man, that music really brings back good memories.
I don't know why people doesn't like SOR 3, i think is the best of the serie. But i prefer the uncensored Japanese version Bare knucles 3 Yeah!
Gerardo Herrera That is def the best version, most perople think #2 is the best but for me its 1 then 2 then 3 (all still great)
yap 3 is the best one
3 is hard to play through because the music was trash - the music was a major part of the charm. the composer when the techno route and it was trash
SOR 3 was definitely the best and especially the soundtrack you can tell that Yuzo put effort into this and than of his previous work like it was definitely next level especially if you’re into electronic music
SOR3 soundtrack was fucking trash! 2 was the best gameplay wise, and 1 had the best soundtrack.
I just love the vibe you get from these games, like the movies of the time the criminals all has that crazy look to them.
in streets of rage 3 -
each character has a hidden super move
all weapons Zan picks up turns into an energy ball which he can throw
shiva and roo/joey cannot pick up weapons
if i'm not mistaken you can also play as Ash if you hold A after beating him till the next round begins
and finally, "NAN-CHA-KA!!!"
actually everyone has a hidden move
Your talking about the forward forward moves right? They upgrade the more stars you get
with blaze she does a upper kick into a slide
axel does a double ground spin into an uppercut
Powra?
SOR 4 is here!!!
I would love to see you Streets of Rage 4
Richard Salazar you and me both!
Streets of Rage series is one of my favorite beat him up
Richard Salazar yeah its well good :) thanks for comme ting buddy
U got it
Well it's finally out! Looking forward to your review
the real streets of rage 4...is die hard arcade
Actually, it's been announced. It's here. After 24 years.
Dynamite cop !!!
Good summary. With Sonic Mania around the corner, I can only hope there will be interest in other 2d sequels in glorious pixel art. A Streets Of Rage sequel with more colors and improved animations (but without losing the 90's aesthetics) would be amazing.
You didn't mention the special moves with weapons added in part 3. Or earning stars that improved the characters special moves.
Bare Knuckle 3 was too easy even on the hardest difficulty.
Hey everybody look! It's @@griffgames9538 the answer to a question no one asked.
@@Hotobu We've all seen these observations before.
An underrated classic. Would love to see this game make a come back.
Perfect example of beat 'em up greatness. Right up there with double dragon.
+Gerald Perez. Couldnt agree more
the fact that you mentioned Streets Of Rage remake and the other BOR games.... bravo sir 👏
why do i get the feeling that streets of rage 4 would be a massive disapointment
The Blue Mantis people generally don't want a new fzero, outside of a small fanbase
Tony Spike depends on the developer. I can seen platinum games making a great streets of rage game.
PLEASE BRING THIS FRANCHISE BACK. I MISS IT SO MUCH. A BIG PART OF MY CHILDHOOD.
Couldn't agree more
So the Streets of Rage 4 trailer dropped... no link to click yet here! ;)
dude you gotta do the complete history of all the different console Wars that there's been, I think it would be awesome to see it in this format.
3rd is da best
Fuck no ! It's the worst by far !!
Moon Beach and The Elevator stage are my iconic stages from this game, I love both so much.
I'd love for a new streets of rage. They should do it with hi res sprites, more frames of animation etc not 3D. Classic 2D style but looking a bit nicer. The only characters should be Axel, blaze, max and Adam (ok, maybe skate too).
Hopefully with the release of the new sonic 2d game it will kick sega up the ass to revice a few classic franchises
+Daniel “Slope's Game Room” Ibbertson I hope so!
Funny that this old video popped up in my feed. The channel has come a long way since the early days.
Streets of Rage 3 was the best one to me (the japanese version)
streets of rage 3 was far too difficult for me it's the only one I couldn't complete.
That's why he said the Japanese version.
Compucles ok
SOR 1 was the best the blaze sprites are everything
@@paulbarnes755 me and my nephew beat streets of rage 3 on hard when he was 9 years old
Watching this video today. I can't recognize the host. You've changed so much Dan and it gives me hope and inspires me to always be a little better in each video.
Streets Of Rage 4 announced today yeaaah.
Streets of Rage is amazing - Streets of Rage with a friend: Priceless.
*genre
Hahaha.
Hahahaha.
Input device makes ALL the difference in gaming, my friends.
the intro music to streets of rage makes me sad because I loved life but now I have nothing to live for
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Love this! Streets of Rage series is amazing. Beat them so many times it's not even funny
River City Ransom is similar
Jerardo Contreras I should look into it
Its for the NES
This is my absolute fave game series of all time and my FAVORITE soundtrack EVERRRR!! Have downloaded both 1 and 2 from the iPhone App Store and the soundtrack on iTunes. This video has brought back ALL of my memories playing this with my cousin every Friday after school after renting it at Blockbuster along with Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 3 attached, and ALSO Gunstar Heroes. Damn mannn!
The music cannot be touched by the SNES and neither can the game play.
It is def an awesome game, although i have never fully finished it
The music is amazing.
Fully agree :)
This video was really well made. Keep it up dude
streets of rage is equal to final fight series
Wrong. Streets of Rage is better than the Final Fight series.
Your production value on these videos is top notch. Im a fan now
Ahhhhhhh thanks dude
I have fond memories of playing Streets of Rage with my best friend. We'd sit for hours playing through the same damn levels over and over, since we never actually managed to complete the last stage. Even so, we enjoyed every minute of it!
This brings back some childhood memories for sure. Love SEGA growing up. Didn't play SOR3 but the first 2 were great!!
+Mike Aranelli ahhhhh dude that is so fucking awesome :) thanks so much
Daniel Ibbertson thank you bro! Keep up the excellent vids👍
Thought I'd come back and rewatch this. It's interesting to see how your commentary style has changed since then, but the visuals have always been impressive. :)
I played all 3 of Streets Of Rage the music of this game is phenomenal thank you for bringing my beautiful memories from your friend in my country UAE
One of the best games ever. The "Six Pack" on Genesis was my childhood.
I'm really enjoying this TH-cam series! I started backwards and worked my way down to this episode. You sound so much more subdued in this episode compared to the future one, made all the more ironic considering how this is your all-time favorite, haha ;)
Always loved this series
The Time has almost come for Streets of Rage 4 ...4 years later from your video!
Best video ever... I just went back to my childhood
Streets of Rage 2 is so replayable, I'm still playing it 24 years later, and on my iPhone while bored in meetings no less. It is 16-bit perfection in my book.
fully agree with you mate :) Hopefully sega soort it out and give us a new one soon :D
I know, the audio on the port was messed up, which is why Sega eventually pulled it. I'm not playing with sound in a meeting anyway LOL.
ITS BEEN OVER 20 YEARS AND THE STREETS OF RAGE 2 SOUNDRACK STILL PLAYS IN MY HEAD SOMETIMES LOL AND I LIKE IT
You have a great channel.
