Over thirty years, and SOR2 is still the one game me and my mom play when i visit. And she still forces me to take Axel because she refuses to play as anyone other than Blaze. I remember getting my Sega Genesis Model 2 with included 6-Pak cart for my 6th birthday in 95. I can't express my excitement for finally being able to have my own console. Obviously I played Sonic first (what 6 year old who loved the more cartoony Sonic cartoon wouldn't?), but then I started played Golden Axe, Revenge Of Shinobi, and Streets Of Rage and I fell in love. Revenge and Streets are very dear to me from the music side of things, I absolutely LOVED their soundtracks and it just felt so good beating the utter crap out of people with samurai swords, throwing stars, and metal pipes. (this is by no means to disrespect Golden Axe, because I loved it too, but it's one of those games that just feels infinitely more fun with a second player)
The music might still be the best soundtrack ever made for any video game. Part 2 crazily surpassed the great original for gameplay. But soundtrack IMO still goes with part 1. Arguably. Great video btw as always.

Patman, great coverage of an awesome game series with Streets of Rage 2 being the ultimate beat 'em up, followed by 4, 1 and then 3 I'd say. SOR 1's music is still my all time favorite soundtrack though, then 4, then 2, then 3 for soundtracks. Olivier Deriviere did a majority of the music for SOR4, some awesome tracks from him. I agree, the Gamegear version is very limited. Thanks! I still play the Streets of Rage games all these years later.
I really hope you'll do a SoR2 deep dive eventually. In any case thank you for the work you've put into so many awesome videos! The trivia and comparisons of the different versions (not to mention hearing you say queefarific lol) are always the highlights for me but I love watching them all from start to finish.
Absolutely love Streets of Rage 4. It's in my top five probably for beat-them-ups :) Others being Final Fight of course, River City Girls 1 & 2. I do love some other ones like Undercover Cops, etc. but these ones stand out in my mind.
I still have both this and my mega drive ii around. It came with the mega6 compilation (i dont know if you guys got that) which was: world cup (italia 90 clone with another name), shinobi, columns, streets of rage, sonic and super monaco 2 (also a clone of super monaco, but features a girl instead of mario andretti on the cover). Looking back, its crazy to think such era defining and great games all came with the console, and all in one cartridge.
My boring SOR story. Read a review of it in a magazine at the time, looked good so I ordered it, then went on holiday. The whole holiday I was wishing to get home so I could play the game. While on holiday I discovered final fight, fell in love with that, it was amazing. Then got home, SOR was waiting, I played it and..... Compared to final fight it was a real let down. Tiny sprites and a lot slower. Having a PAL console didn't help the speed. Then got a SNES and played final fight instead. I did love the soundtrack though and also enjoyed SOR 2 although it's still far slower than the frenetic final fight action.
Super Monaco GP is an awesome game with drama. I didn't even know about the Sega CD classics collection! I'll have to look for it. Glad you're feeling better Pat. Good job on another great video💪🏆
I remember growing up as a kid My father had rent it streets a rage I used to stay up all night trying to beat this game I have felt like a couple times and then I tried again and I finally beat it I didn't realize about rage 2 till later and then rage Three as well while I was living in Germany there was a base like an hour away and I went to the power zone and I found the rage set all together I had to ask my dad if he give me the trilogy but he couldn't get it cuz he had the money for it he knew I wanted it but then I didn't get it. When I was 10 years old that's when I got rage 2 and 3
Sweet! I thought you were gone Patman. For some reason I am not getting any alerts for your videos. Whatever the problem is I know you're still rocking and that makes me happy. Now, to my comment... As you know, Patman, I was one of the few that sat squarely in both camps. I got my Sega Genesis in 1989, my Snes in 1991, and Sega CD in 1992. While I liked my Snes, the Genesis was my favorite. I especially hated what Nintendo of America did to the Snes's case. It was just hideous looking and stood out like a sore thumb when sitting in an entertainment center but I digress. One of the biggest reasons I loved Sega was games fot like Streets of Rage 1+2. They were grittier, darker, and more hardcore in their approach. To this day I still think SOR2 is the very best beat em' up ever created.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It most definitely does deserve it's own review. I would put this on par with TMNT Turtles in Time as the 1a and 1b in retro beat em ups. If it wasn't for SoR 4 and Shredder's Revenge I would say they are the GOAT beat em ups!
Classic of classics. Amazing music and satisfying gameplay. Fave is 2 of course but 1 isn't a slouch. And 3 has its charm. 4 is cool. My fave version is SoRR however. Wish sega would make it an official release
It's fitting that the channel I discovered by looking for videos about Data East's Captain America and the Avengers (still love the way you say the word "Avengers," by the way) would finally cover my personal favourite beat-'em-up series.
That's fantastic (four). I've had the iconic "NOOO!" as a text ringtone for years. It always gets a reaction out of others - sometimes they find it funny, sometimes annoying, but rarely do they know what it is. My wife and kid do know it and think it's funny, at least.
I remember the enterprising homebrew fans releasing a streets of rage where you could play as Megaman. I didn't know that E Swat took place in the same world as this interesting.
I remember Me and a friend was playing Final Fight SNES and how watered down it was from the Arcade but still had a BLAST with it!! But when SoR came out WOW!! GAME CHANGER!!😅😁🌟💃🔥💪🎮🎮
That was an absolutely magnificent review, as always. But! I'm going to greedily ask for the same deep dive into the G.O.A.T: Streets of rage 2!! I was a Nintendo kid, but after I played Streets of Rage 2 I started having some serious doubts about who was actually the console king. To this day Street of Rage 2 is still my all time favorite beat em up.
I remember scouring the „warez“ landscape for an arcade version of SoR about 20 years ago. Since a lot of Sega titles originated as technologically superior versions in the arcades before hitting the Mega Drive/Genesis, I thought this applied to SoR as well. Since the internet was a primordial chaos and no one confirmed that no original arcade version exists, I was looking for much, much longer than I’m comfortable admitting today😂😂😂
Should have used the options menu to capture the music without the SFX but I guess it’s a more accurate representation of how you’re most likely to hear it while playing.
I Remember Playing This Game On The Atgames Sega Genesis Plug In Play System When I Was A Kid This Is My Favorite Sega Genesis Game Thank You PatMan I Like Your Videos And Your Channel Please Do A History Of Foodfight Arcade Thank You For This Video PatMan
Depending on who you ask SEGA may have made the first beat em up. Wikipedia will say its Kung-fu Master (1984), but SEGA released a game titled Samurai in 1980. It's a single screen game, not a belt scroller though, but many of what would become commonplace in the genre started there.
Hello! With Assault Suit Leynos 2 finally getting an english release i would love to see a video from you on the Assault Suit Series. The first game i remember playing as a child was Target earth on Sega Genesis ( Assault Suit Leynos in Japan). And thank you for covering SoR, another childhood favorite of mine.
I know this video is focused on the original mostly but I can tell you that Streets Of Rage when it first came out on the Genesis it was basically a giant middle finger to Capcom and Nintendo. Not only that but other series like Final Fight, Double Dragon and others put them notice because of it's urban soundscape, fantastic level design, attention to detail, and was the most complex beat em up engine at that point in 1991. Then all of a sudden, out of no where in December 1992 when Streets Of Rage 2 came out, that was it like good night Irene as far as Beat 'em ups. We're talking a home console Genesis game and it felt and sounded like something you would experience in the Arcades dumping quarters in. Nobody has come remotely close to the impact that Streets Of Rage 2 made with the exception of Streets Of Rage 4 which was a super close and valiant effort by Dotemu/Lizard Cube. I happened to get my Sega Genesis on Christmas of 1992 and being able to play Streets Of Rage 2 at the same time when it first came out was one of the biggest euphoric moments of my life as a gamer, to have something so stellar that I beat it over and over again soaking in every moment of the game. But all in all, we wouldn't have gotten to the mighty Streets Of Rage 2 without the classic launchpad that was the original Streets Of Rage 1 which I still fire up and play today at least once or twice a year from beginning to end. 😎
Playing this, Spider-Man v Kingpin, and Sonic 1 as a kid in ‘91 was magic.
Oh absolutely
For me it was decep attack. Kid camelion and road rash 2
Hard to believe it's been 30 years. Gaming was incredible back then.

Thank you patman. I bought SOR4 last year and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Great to hear about 5!
Excellent, glad you enjoyed it
All The Streets of Rage games are so great and deserve a chance ❤
Patman, great coverage of an awesome game series with Streets of Rage 2 being the ultimate beat 'em up, followed by 4, 1 and then 3 I'd say. SOR 1's music is still my all time favorite soundtrack though, then 4, then 2, then 3 for soundtracks. Olivier Deriviere did a majority of the music for SOR4, some awesome tracks from him. I agree, the Gamegear version is very limited. Thanks! I still play the Streets of Rage games all these years later.
Thanks again patman for the short diversion, you arw the man. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
I really hope you'll do a SoR2 deep dive eventually. In any case thank you for the work you've put into so many awesome videos! The trivia and comparisons of the different versions (not to mention hearing you say queefarific lol) are always the highlights for me but I love watching them all from start to finish.
Thank you so much. I'm sure at some point I will cover the second game. Glad you enjoy all of my videos
Happy Little Beat 'Em Ups! Thanks Pat-Man!!! I love this franchise! I haven't heard of Revolution though at the time of typing this message!
LOL thanks buddy
Absolutely love Streets of Rage 4. It's in my top five probably for beat-them-ups :) Others being Final Fight of course, River City Girls 1 & 2. I do love some other ones like Undercover Cops, etc. but these ones stand out in my mind.
Love the video drops by PatMan!
Great commentary and underrated channel.
I appreciate that!Thanks so much
Such a great series and review. Can't wait for the next incarnation of streets of rage
☝️💪🙌
You and me both!Thanks
Fantastic review! Lots of great memories of this game!
Glad you enjoyed it!
God Bless Tim Kitzrow Midway found a gem making him an announcer for all of their sports games
He is the goat that's for sure
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries him and Kevin Calaburull the play by play announcer for the Seattle SuperSonics and Portland trailblazers
Super Monaco GP is an awesome game with drama. I didn't even know about the Sega CD classics collection! I'll have to look for it. Glad you're feeling better Pat. Good job on another great video💪🏆
I'm not 100% but I'm getting there, thanks for the nice words
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries keep giving it hell bro! 💪💪💪
This whole series is Awesome!
My dude! Love your reviews thank you sir
Glad you like them!
Streets of Rage 2 deserve its own review. It's the king of beat em ups.
I figured it would need some well-deserved attention but wanted to test the waters to see if anyone else thought so as well.
Yes indeed, please cover SOR2! Would love an in-depth deep dive by you, PatmanQC.
Beautiful video, my friend. Thank you once again. :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Classic of classics. Amazing music and satisfying gameplay. Fave is 2 of course but 1 isn't a slouch. And 3 has its charm. 4 is cool. My fave version is SoRR however. Wish sega would make it an official release
Yes can't wait for it to become official
I have all 3 of these on the Sega Megadrive Collection for the Xbox 360, and PS4. 2 is my favourite. Still haven't played SoR 4 yet.
Excellent, if you like those you should definitely check out the fourth one
Still available??
As a Nintendo guy growing up Fighting Force 64 was a great game
I played it a few times back in the day
Patman + SoR! We eating well today beatemupbros!
Awesome, I hope you enjoy it
It's fitting that the channel I discovered by looking for videos about Data East's Captain America and the Avengers (still love the way you say the word "Avengers," by the way) would finally cover my personal favourite beat-'em-up series.
LOL, the pronunciation of that word will always be stuck with me. I still say to my son "you stupid men" and he knows exactly what I'm talking about
That's fantastic (four). I've had the iconic "NOOO!" as a text ringtone for years. It always gets a reaction out of others - sometimes they find it funny, sometimes annoying, but rarely do they know what it is. My wife and kid do know it and think it's funny, at least.
love beat'em ups
So do I :-)
I loved my SNES, but the Genesis will always be my jam. And Streets of Rage 2 is the second best game on the system, after Shadowrun.
I remember the enterprising homebrew fans releasing a streets of rage where you could play as Megaman. I didn't know that E Swat took place in the same world as this interesting.
Hell yeah, a great start for a Friday morning🤟
Hope you enjoy it my friend
The soundtrack still holds up today.
Yes it does, I heard it quite a bit over the past nine days while making the video
Finally came around to watch this video. Great video. Hopefully videos for 2-4?
You know you're a true Nintendo fan when you played SOR and moved the special attack to the C button, A was attack, and B was jump 😎
I remember Me and a friend was playing Final Fight SNES and how watered down it was from the Arcade but still had a BLAST with it!! But when SoR came out WOW!! GAME CHANGER!!😅😁🌟💃🔥💪🎮🎮
Absolutely :-)
SoR 2 OST is some serious bump-from-car material
Streets of Rage 2 needs it's own stand-alone video yesterday.
Another good history video from you. 👍
Streets of Rage odd-numbered stages were the best. Basically the reverse of OG Star Trek movies.
LOL comment of the day
That was an absolutely magnificent review, as always.
Thanks. I will cover the second game in the future
yes do SOR2 for sure would love a deep dive in the patmanqc style
Thanks buddy
Hey, Pat! Great job - as always ❤🎉😊
By the way... love Your timbre of voice. ❤❤❤
Thanks buddy :-)
I remember scouring the „warez“ landscape for an arcade version of SoR about 20 years ago. Since a lot of Sega titles originated as technologically superior versions in the arcades before hitting the Mega Drive/Genesis, I thought this applied to SoR as well. Since the internet was a primordial chaos and no one confirmed that no original arcade version exists, I was looking for much, much longer than I’m comfortable admitting today😂😂😂
LOL, I used to work in a computer store and a guy came in bragging about how he would get the "WARE-EZ" versions of games and never have to pay a dime
I've always liked this game. Sega did a great job. I need to give those two most recent versions a try as well. I didn't know they existed.
You definitely should
This is my new favorite channel I can't stop watching you're videos can you do one on castlevania
Thanks have already covered It so check the archives
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries awesome on my way to find it now keep up the work your docs are the best 💪
Thanks a lot :-)
I hope you do a video on the Street Fighter 3 series it’s absolutely underrated.
Possibly, although I haven't even covered streetfighter 2 yet
Even to this day, I consider Streets of Rage 2 to be the best beat 'em up ever made.
It is fantastic
I cant donate but thank you patman keep being a positive role model
Thanks for the nice words
If the movie "Streets of Fire" isn't referenced then this documentary is incomplete.
Streets of Fire was influential to Final Fight. There is no „direct“ connection to Streets of Rage

Should have used the options menu to capture the music without the SFX but I guess it’s a more accurate representation of how you’re most likely to hear it while playing.
Yes, SoR II deep dive please.
I Remember Playing This Game On The Atgames Sega Genesis Plug In Play System When I Was A Kid This Is My Favorite Sega Genesis Game Thank You PatMan I Like Your Videos And Your Channel
Please Do A History Of Foodfight Arcade
Thank You For This Video PatMan
PatmanQC, now with more “rage”!
please!
LOL
Depending on who you ask SEGA may have made the first beat em up. Wikipedia will say its Kung-fu Master (1984), but SEGA released a game titled Samurai in 1980. It's a single screen game, not a belt scroller though, but many of what would become commonplace in the genre started there.
Perhaps I should have clarified it as a side scroller. Good call though
Great video review.
The remake looks like a must play
I agree 100%
