- The Making of Streets of Rage 2 (2020 extended version).
A while back I interviewed Yuzo Koshiro who revealed some new info on the development of this legendary brawler. In this episode: How the small studio Ancient was tasked with making the best fighter on the system. Also covered, the music of Streets of Rage 2 and the audio hardware inside the Mega-Drive.

This channel is one of the most underrated things ever.
A good comment that's not a meme trying to be funny. Holy shit! And I completely agree. I've been complaining about that for a while now.
This and wrestling with regret
Oh, oh, oh, and ordinary sausage. Ordinary Sausage fs.
I couldn't agree more.
Seriously, deserves at least 10x the subscriptions. One of the few high quality, substantive gaming channels on TH-cam.
This documentary is a masterpiece.
It is a well done preservation of gaming history, and more than that, it was created with care and passion of a true gamer.
Congratulations.
word
Soundtrack is by far one of the best in the gaming industry.
Totally. I love it so much that I'm currenty working on a 24 bit quality remix/resample. Fan since day 1. Koshiro is a genius.
yeah the tunes were cool . some had note sequences pretty much copied from house tunes of the day , some were just pure original and stylish like zanza's stage music !
It's great for sure. Also, check out Silver Surfer for NES's soundtrack. Incredible
It's excellent to DL off of ITunes and work out to.
@@rsouth454 Zanza's stage sounded like Dr Dre early 90s G-funk.
"The impact, or hit sound effect, is important to convey the strength and feel of a blow." Hear that SOR 4? Take note!
It is amazing how much care and work went into SOR2. Nearly 30 years later, and it still revered and loved by many.
Now I know that it could reach that level cause it was made with great passion.
SoR4 is the perfect heir of this masterpiece
Thank you for pointing that out! Even the makers of these types of games don't get that!
What's wrong with the hit sounds in SOR4? I thought they were fine.
@@moy_moy85 They're meh, at best. Hit sounds need to have that snap or pop when something is hit to have a satisfying sound. SOR4 sounds like slapping a bag, or a muted newspaper hitting lettuce. It's not impactful. Listen to hit sounds from the other SOR games, Final Fight, Battletoads arcade, Fight N' Rage, Double Dragon Neon as theirs have that oomph sound to them.
@@moy_moy85 The pipe sound isn't there. But this is the only complaint I have with the entire game.
Streets of Rage 2 is probably the most iconic game of my childhood. Thank you so much for this documentary. ❤️
Yeah, the music immediately takes me back to the 90s. I was playing it on my 3ds last night. Love the 3D effect.
I remember the day when my bro and I got home from school and my dad said "I have a surprise for you." There it was... the sega genesis with streets of rage 2.
No words could ever express how we felt.
Just cranking up the volume and playing with all its blast processing was all we needed. 🙂
Good times!
Best game documentaries ever made hands down
This channel is just beyond epic. Streets of Rage II is not only the best beat-em-up on the Mega Drive, but also just happens to be one of the best beat-em-ups of all time. Oh and it's also one of the best sequels of all time. Did I mention that I love this game and have done since childhood? Yeah, that too.
The new one part 4 is also a masterpiece! Goodlord
The new SoR4 is PERFECT!!!
Have u played 4?what did u think of it ?
It is a bit slow with no run
I used to play this with my mother for hours. I'm 39 and this took me back to being 11 years old.
I'm more excited to see these than the PS5 honestly
🤙🤙🤙
I'm more excited to see these than the Xbox series x honestly
@@miikey376 series x is a trash pc tbh
word
@@Sadab360 . The POS5 is just strictly trash. So much trash Sony is reviving PS4 production.
I didn’t even realize you hit 100k keep up the good work you deserve it!
Thanks so much! Yeah I passed the 100k subs last month which is really awesome :)
@@strafefox you plan on doing a 100k plaqe unboxing?
@@strafefox Much deserved, congratulations!
@@strafefox Would you do this full time if it was economically viable?
Even nearly 28 years later this is still the BEST Beat em up ever made, heck it's still 1 of the best Video Games ever made & it still holds up / plays, looks & sounds amazing even today! Awesome video mate. :)
I think that SOR4 finally overcame his ancestor
@@19DM91 Not even close. SOR4 is too restrictive & forces you to play in a certain way due to how nearly every enemy has super armor, including the skinny twerps like Mr. Y & the hands in pockets guy. SOR4 is good, but it's not better than the original trilogy. Fight N Rage comes closer to taking that mantle & The Takeover feels & looks more like an actual sequel to SOR 1-3.
@@BoozeAholic I like difficult games, they force you to become a better player. Anyway, check out the September PATCH, the game became much more balanced
@@19DM91 SOR4 dives heavily into risk-reward gameplay with special moves costing green health when you use them, combined with enemies that spam moves like crazy, encouraging you to use multiple specials in a row then gamble on not getting hit by a stray move as you build your lifebar back. It plays differently than the original trilogy did, and it's a playstyle that I don't care for. I much prefered SOR3's special gauge.
It also has a pretty disappointing soundtrack.
@@BoozeAholic THANK YOU!
Yes!! More content on the greatest game of all time. This is going to be epic!
Streets of Rage 2 is one of the greatest games, but Streets of Rage 4 is the greatest Beat 'Em Up of all time!
@@Victory-in-YAHUSHA I agree, but there would be no SOR4 without SOR2 being so legendary
@@Wza456 That is true. The same could be for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but it would not exist without the success of the SNES trilogy.
You... comment before watching a video?
You are now officially the first person I've ever supported through Patreon. So much of my in depth knowledge on the history of these games has come from watching this channel. Thank you so much for all the hard work and incredibly entertaining way you present it!
Wow. Loved all the stories and tidbits, and the animation for this video is also cool as hell!
The crashing car sketch finally became a reality in SOR4
One of my all time favorite games AND soundtracks. I had no idea Yuzo had that much creative input. I'm even more in awe of that guy.
Uhhh... This was awesome. You can feel the love in the music. I used to connect the Genesis to my stereo system to listen to and play both SOR 1 and 2. We would play SOR 2 endlessly... Outstanding documentary.
Music is over 20 years old and it still sounds awesome.
Hands down, your channel is THE MOST worthwhile channel i ever subscribed to. Everything is just pure 80s nostalgia and epicness. LOVE IT.
Whoever is behind this channel, you are awesome. I've been coming here for years now and the content you provide is always high quality. You also stick to that retro aesthetic which ties so beautifully to your content. You deserve more subscribers and views and I hope someday you get it, until then I'll keep sharing your content.
Thanks so much!
so much info, so many visual and explanation , and still this channel only received 100k+ sub? wtf is wrong with yt algorithm?
thank you so much for this video, awesome piece of work.
How to learn about making games and 80s music and sounds in one video, marvelous video.
How does this not have 100K views? The graphic work, the editing, the voice over, the script writing, the asset use, the knowledge... This is all top tier. Easiest subscribe I've done in months. Please, keep up the top notch work.
The old version of this video had over 100k views. This one will get there
It does.
@@moy_moy85 It did not when I made this comment eight months ago. Your attention to detail is astonishing.
What a treat! Looking forward to watching this. Your high profile TV quality production never disappoints.
As the planets biggest SOR Fan I have to say thank you to absolutely every person Involved in making this, including the patreons! And most definitely koshiro and kawashima! The quality of presentation, research and affection for the source material in this videos makes the Netflix series high score look like an absolute joke. Keep it up guys! For the love of God .KEEP.IT.UP!!!!
Can you imagine the absurd amount of top quality games companies like Ancient and Rare would have been able to create if something like Steam had existed at the time and the massive costs of producing cartridges and arcade boards weren't a limitation?
That makes me wonder what happened to Ancient.
The idea of Jeroen doing a documentary about the making of Streets of Rage 4 in a future (which already is an all-time classic) makes me happy.
Once again guys you made an incredible classy and sober job with a title we all love. THANK YOU
Simple amazing... This is the channel where I can extract much information, with an incredible quality of editing and details. Greetings from Brazil, land of Master System!
Wow, amazing documentary! So much interesting information and visually very well put together. Great job!
Thanks!
Oh nice! You guys should do the making of Streets of Rage 3. I really would like to know why Sega drastically changed the US version.
Thanks! I covered sor3 a little in my revenge of shinobi video. But updating that video with more info is also on my to-do list.
@@strafefox Awesome! 😊
@@strafefox and what is that to-do list exactly?
@@Game_Hero you know, a list of things to do... Lol
I'd also love to see a video on SOR3. That was a time where a lot of American publishers made changes to games to make them harder. The speculation is that they wanted to make people play them for longer so they couldn't finish them during a rental. In this case, they made the default difficulty of SOR3 the hard difficulty of Bare Knuckle 3. Sega of America also feared that people would look at screenshots of SOR3 and think that it looked the same as the last one, so they swapped the colors of the main roster's clothes. They also added clothing to some of the women and removed the homosexual character to avoid controversy. Remember, this was not that long after Senators freaked out over the violence and sexuality of Night Trap of all things..
If there’s one thing I can say it’s that the developers of the old days were really creative.
Thank for the video.
Sooooo good, Strafefox!
I would love to see you do a documentary about Quintet- the Japanese studio who made Actraiser, Terranigma, Soul Blazer, etc.
Keep up the great work!
Congratulations Strafe Fox! Your documentary is amazing! And to think that Yuzo Koshiro's collaboration happened because I posted his documentary there on his feed huh, hehehe !!! Congratulations one more time!!!
How about continuing this collaboration with the Koshiros / Ancient and making a documentary about Beyond Oasis and The Legend of Oasis? It would be amazing !!!
Thanks! It would be great to extend this episode or the shinobi video with some extra Oasis content.
You have surpassed yourself 😍
The kind of content internet needs.
Love and production know-how united.
Thanks
Incredible documentary about a favourite game from my childhood. The production value of these videos is next level stuff! Thank you for posting.
It's criminal that this channel doesn't have at least 1 million subs. You can tell their videos are a labor of love.
The best Beat 'em up of all time!
And the best Retro Videogame Documentary Channel!
By far the best documentary I've seen about my dearly beloved Streets of Rage. Thank you, and keep up the great work.
Genuinely think this is your best video yet. You do an excellent job going beyond the basics, painting a scene for what development was like. You write Ancient and team were full of passion, dedication, and creativity. Your projects exude the same qualities.
Also thank you for introducing me to BGM1401's Keep the Groovin' remix. It's an amazing remix I've been listening to ever since you used it in the original video.
Awesome to hear! Thanks so much! Working on Streets of Rage themed videos is always a pleasure since sor1 and 2 are among my favorite games plus it gives me the opportunity to talk about music and 80s hardware. And yeah the Keep the Groovin remix is really great :)
every once in a while i forget this channel exists, then come back and binge all of this over and over
This is the kind of thing you’d see on late night TV in the 90s, tape and watch a thousand times. Awesome work.
Yet again this is so in-depth. It’s like looking under the hood of my childhood memories. I appreciate the amazing work you’ve done here.
Thanks so much!
This is somehow even better than the original. You keep setting the bar high and higher. Amazing work, just amazing.
Fantastic documentary strafefox! SOR2 is easily my favourite megadrive game of all time - now I can see why! I love it when game publishers allow their projects time to cook in the oven.... The results are almost always worth the extra wait time!
I've never seen such beautifully made, visually stunning vids as yours. Hope your channel continues to run and grow.
Thanks so much!
Honestly, seeing a new strafefox Splash Wave video pop up in my feed genuinely makes me happy and changes my day to positive. What talent you have, coupled with incredibly hard work. A gift for all us gamers.
This is a documentary about gaming and not a simple video simply uploading on YT. I hope this channel can go far. Netflix might be a better place.
This channel is underloved because the content deserves a lot more subscribers :)
Was about 6/7 When I bought Streets of Rage 2 grew up with the Megadrive such a beast, this channel brings back the good ole days of the 90's love this channel and the artwork/presentation you guys do !
Presentation, music, narrative, content….all perfect!
This should be a world conquering channel!
this is one of my favorite episodes yet. i'd love to know how you isolated the individual sound channels for the bar theme! incredible work here
With original .vgm files, you can mute channels in VGM players.VGM Input plugin for Foobar is probably the best one.
I am in complete awe of the visuals in these videos. Some of, if not the, best editing on TH-cam.
As a great man once said:
"I have waited 4...no, 5 thousand years for this!"
One of the best "making of " videos out there! Keep up the awesome work.
Netflix needs to give this team a deal, top shelf content! Kudos!
That was my first game for the Sega Genesis. I played the hell out of it. When they announced Streets of Rage 4 you couldn't imagine how excited I was. That game is a true love letter and I can't wait for the day that a video like this surfaces for the making of Streets of Rage 4. I could only imagine some of the hurdles the company had to go through to make this game happen. Thank you for this video. I enjoyed every moments of it!
I found out about this channel from the developers of the newly released TechBeat Heart. I can't believe I missed this for so long. Your narration is excellent, I'm stunned by all your motion graphics work (on par with Ahoy) and I love all the behind the scenes information you provide. Congrats on your awesome work! Definitely will be watching a lot more of it.
You know it's a special sort of day when I hit that Subscribe button, not because I've been pounded over the head to do so, but because the content is that damn good.
Great documentary. Streets of Rage saga has something very special, in every game they bring something new, the first one with the team tactics, the second one with new attacks and a character who can run and the third one (very underrated in my opinion), the 3 star system, special attacks with weapons, 3 different endings, two different final levels and the harder of the three games.
Story of Thor, amazing game.
This man is a genius. The editing is absolutely beautiful.
Ha thanks so much! :)
I am behind on these videos because I'm so busy. Unlike most youtube where I can play it in the background while I do other things, I have to give your content my undivided attention because of its sheer quality. Thanks for doing this stuff.
Again thanks, really can appreciate now the efforts that went into making this game...loved it growing up and it can still hold its own today.
Grew up with Streets of Rage 1&2 on my mega drive Great video 👍👍👍👍👍
Its criminal how underrated this channel is
Love this channel so much!
Amazing video! A real throwback to that era. Only thing missing was mentioning Final Fight and Double Dragon. I can't believe Koshiro didn't look at those games very closely during the development of this game. Those were THE big franchises in the beat em up genre.
Just randomly watched this by accident and was fascinated. Streets of rage 2 was a big hit in my childhood, my mate across the street would always rent this game out from choices (a rental shop in uk) and we spent hours playing this.
The music has always stuck with me and its always been one of the games I loved as a kid.
Great video, just liked and subbed
Very nicely done! To this day, I still listen to the amazing soundtracks of the first two SOR games. The remake remastered soundtracks are absolutely brilliantly recreated, and a 90s kid like me will never forget the amazing masterpiece of a game that Streets of Rage 2 was. It was the reason for me to buy a Genesis at the time. Yuzo and his team were the top point at a time when game creativity was at its peak.
God, I remember when Streets of Rage 2 came out when I was 8 years old, the music blew my mind. Still does to this day. Some of the best video game music ever created. Very in depth video. Thank you, Strafefox!
Thank you for all the effort you put in making this beautiful documentary. It literally brought tears to my eyes. All of my childhood was playing video games on my SEGA. This reminds me of so much.
Best documentary on this entire site. Period.
Unbelievable how good the content on this channel is.
very sick vid my dude. Cant believe how impressive a come up story this game was. Such little experience and they made an all round banger of a game.
Man now I understand why this game is so good. Small company, awesome game, enough for them to make more music. 10/10 game and music
Absolutely excellent documentary. Over the years I came to realize that SOR2 is the best beat'em up across any console or even coin-op games.
Brilliant vid, great production and research 👍
Thank you so much for this in-depth look into what made up a very special part of my childhood.
Hell, even now the music is still something I keep coming back to.
This will forever be one of my favorite games and soundtracks. Glad I stumbled upon this channel, it's gold.
You were not kidding when you said “The Making...” these technical details are amazing!
All I can say is thank you for doing what you do and it's its own class, style, story, time, and creativity. Your work should be protected to treasured. Even though that this is my opinion, I really wished that you didn't delete the first Streets of Rage 2 video, that should be kept too because it's history.
This channel has made me realize how important the first level is in a game. It never really occurred to me how this factors into internal but in and marketing, as well as consumer impressions since most players are casual and may never get to the end anyway.
Brilliant feature - SoR2 is my all time favourite game! I love how in-depth you went!
Thank you so much for creating this. The nostalgia is hitting me hard right now.
This channel became one of my favorites almost INSTANTLY. Please please make more. There are so many good arcade games and publishers who's stories need to be heard. Cheers!!!
Thanks for mentioning The Story Of Thor! I'd like to see a "making of" that game too. The music is genius for that game too, & shows a different side to Yuzo Koshiro - an orchestral scorring one.
Great video. I love how they took 90s inspiration out of magazines at 4:38. Skate, WWF wrestlers, the Rocketeer, backwards caps and more
This channel is the Studio Ancient of TH-cam Channels. Keep these videos coming!
This channel is the summit of quality youtube videos and deserves more than 10.000.000 subs! So underrated, my God! What a great and informative video, thank you so much!
Time to chill out with an awesome discussion on Streets of Rage 2( Bare Knuckle 2)! I am so excited as these videos have been detailed, very well researched and excellent companion pieces my live the franchises covered!
You can really tell from the finished product when a huge amount of dedication and care goes into a project. This applies to not only Streets of Rage 2, but to this excellent documentary!
Once again, you've knocked it out of the park. Even though I seen this before, this feels even better to witness. Keep making your high production series!
It's amazing how perfect the writing and editing works together in your videos, it's like you don't waste a single moment of the video, i just love your videos. It may take time but it always a masterpiece.
Thanks so much :)
What an outstanding documentary! I clicked because of the love for the game but came out amazed at the level of research and presentation.
This is without doubt one of the best videos relating to video games on TH-cam. Well done
I love your work, and also Streets of Rage. Perfection.
This is going to be good!
Edit: It was great! Your original video was one of my favorites, and this really was a step up. Keep up the awesome work, man!
i like how much work you put in details of your presentation... like when you show the original game on a tv with a moving 3d backround 0:33 AWESOME!
The outro music is just the cherry on top of this video; nice one!
This channel is so underrated! It’s got awesome content! Surprised you haven’t hit a million subs yet! It’s literally one of my favourite channels! Thanks again for the amazing content
