Yeah, a lot of the slop comes from that worn out plastic cup bushing for ball joint. This part is cheap and very available as they used it for many of their manual cars. New bushings under the car and in the linkage will improve the play in the shifter but this cup bushing gets overlooked by everyone doing this upgrade on TH-cam - it's a $3 part thats giving you 60% of that slop.
Finally someone mentions this. Lmao everyone just says upgrade those bushings under the car but it looks like a pain the ass to actually diy. I'd much rather do the simple things first to get the same or better results
Yeah if I remember correctly mine needed a little bit of sanding to fit correctly. I think there is a 5 speed model and a 6 speed model and you may have to trim depending on model and year.
I could be wrong but I thought when I was reading up on this before someone said there was an internal return/centering spring (internal in the transmission). If you’ve covered all of your other bases maybe that spring has worn out? I could be totally wrong but worth a forum search, I’m going to go check myself because I’d like tighten mine up too

The new u joint metal bushings didnt needed sanding , they have different lenthg , you just needed to change the position....

That's very possible, my transmission has 180k on it ands never been opened. I'm waiting for it to grenade before I Crack it open lol
