    Very enlightening. The amount of extra dirty oil you got from the purge is an eye-opener for me. Excellently explained as always. Thanks!!

    I just did my 1st full purge change. Stock 2002 FSXTDI Deuce 8560 miles. I rode my bike 5300 miles on 2 tank and filter changes. It took me about 2hrs cause finding my filter wrench was a 30min waste. My return line had Oring/hard spacer/Oring. The magnet was clean aside from the normal spec of black dust after 2500 miles. Thank you! Your podcasts are so well edited, even a mechanical idiot can do it! I feel very reassured, knowing for a fact that my engine is wear free and clean inside. I am an endless haunt about clean engines, inside and outside, because I owned and repowered 7 different types of boats over 45+yrs skiing and on open water. There ain't no tow trucks at sea! When the pair of engines under the deck suddenly stop, start paddling! 😂 I have never been towed back to the dock since I stepped on a boat in 1967. Other people's boats for sure, but never mine. Blue Skies and Rubber Down Everyone!

    Thanks for being thorough. Changed many oils, but first time for Twin Cam. Very simple thanks to you! Purged well over a quart of the old stuff (Syn3). The only suggestion that I have is to try 100% synthetic. I used Amsoil and am very impressed with results. Engine runs quieter and shifts smoother. Thanks again mate, and CHEERS from South Carolina, USA.

    I will be watching all your videos. You have that straight forward approach that just makes sense. Thanks!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks buddy, you're very kind, there isn't actually that much dirty oil left in the engine, if you were to scrape out the dirty oil in some way, it'd probably be less than half a cupful, but when you get almost 1.5pints of dirty oil out, much of that is actually new oil that's rinsed the linings of the oil ways and all the hoses and cleaned them, like a detergent, so you are sacrificing, maybe, a pint of your new oil to wash out the old stuff, but as you no doubt agree, it is so worth it... your new oil will stay clean for at least 1000miles before it even begins to discolour so the next purge you do will run clear in, maybe, half a pint... thanks again, ride safe, Del

    your plug wires need to be grounded when cranking
    to prevent risk of over voltage damage to the ignition coils. You can also unplug the coil. Best practice is to remove the spark plugs to ease the starter and driveline when cranking with zero oil pressure.

    • @MikeTomillo
      @MikeTomillo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My only quibble with this is unnecessary decoupling of the spark plugs. It is simpler and faster to just engage the kill switch before cranking it. No spark is going to the plugs.

    • @patrickzambori473
      @patrickzambori473 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikeTomillo Typically, the engine will not crank from the handlebar switch with the run/stop in the stop position. I will typically jump power to the starter solenoid directly if I don't want the ignition system or fuel pump doing anything when cranking.

    • @allowambeBOWWAMB
      @allowambeBOWWAMB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks buddy.... It is surprising how much is left behind aye... many disregard the procedure thinking its just a small splash left behind... but they change their tune when they realise its almost a litre... Thanks for your kind comments mate.

  • @phdzzz
    @phdzzz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thank you so very much Delboy, now I know where all the dirty oil came from, when I draint the crankcase, (the plug under the engine in the middle)
    Your way of changing oil is, in my opinion the only wright way. I found the plug accidentally, and when I got it out, there came more than a liter out of the engine (after the 'normal' oil change)

    I have a 2005 fatboy didn’t like leaving all that dirty oil when I changed it I liked your idea on purging it read most of the comments to see if anyone else stated this my bike has two o rings and a plastic spacer in-between on the return line so be careful so you don’t lose any of it when disassembling

    Nice tutorial! A tips,
    When installing a new filter, slightly moisten the sealing edge in the filter with new oil to be sure a rubber surface isn't torqued towards a metal surface, it can cause the rubber seal to do unwanted flexing.
    And thx for great process videos!!!

  • @allowambeBOWWAMB
    @allowambeBOWWAMB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is an excellent tutorial. So no need for a hot engine, then. There was something about particles being suspended in hot oil that has been running for a bit. But I guess that's also purged out here. I actually got replacement upper oil retainers just in case. I might as well replace them!

    Two years on and about to do my fourth service, I still haven’t done the full purge, although I don’t argue it’s better. I’ve never wanted to risk losing or breaking the fitting parts, but I might actually have a go at it this time. What’s funny however, is not having found one technician, or DIYer who even knows about this, and I’ve asked a bunch of people. What’s important however, is your videos more than any others inspired me to do all this work myself, and I’ve learned so much. Everything in this series of 5 is so, so easy, and my bike is in tip top maintenance wise all the time. Thank you for making these and making it look as easy as it is.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most welcome indeed Patrick, and im very proud the our videos have been such an inspiration in keeping your bike in top condition. It's not critical that you purge the old oil out, but as you can see there is a fair bit left behind with the dry sump system on the Softails, and ive found over the following miles after the purge change that the new oil stays cleaner for longer, which naturally means it is less contaminated with old oil.. Who knows why the Dealers don't bother to support the practice, im not really interested as to why, im just looking at my oil, and using common sense to make sure its as clean and free from the old sump oil as possible.. Ride safe my friend, and thank you for your support .

    Great explanation on all your videos. Blown away with your video on a full engine service, I feel
    like I’ve been deceived by Harley Davidson service agents when running old dirty oil or not through my new clean filter.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, please don't take a downer on the dealers, they're doing nothing wrong, the factory doesn't stipulate that you must purge a Softail engine as the 5k oil change interval is probably more than it needs to be, you can push them to 10k in the right climate and it won't hurt them, they're a very robust engine, but purging is just a purist practice to make sure you've removed all oil and I'm sure if you asked your Harley dealer to do this for you, any technician would be happy to oblige, and probably wouldn't charge you any more money... all the Harley techs I've ever met have been dedicated enthusiasts and bikers just like us, and they care about what they do.

      Hey Del,
      Can’t believe you got back to me so quickly, thank you.
      I didn’t want to sound out HD like I did, they have been really good to me in the past, sending a text can be taken in the wrong light sometimes.
      I have a 2006 Fatboy 88 FLSTFI only done 19,300 Klms, do I need to worry about OIL Pressure Mods at this stage? I am looking into filter options ie vapor hoses from top end covers being redirected into Catch Can/filter instead of going directly into intake manifold. What’s your take on these mods? Do you have any videos on these subjects?
      I’ve got hundreds of questions to put to you but these will do for now.
      Cheers

      @@peterfox6447 Breather hoses are directed in to your air box, so that the fumes and vapour can be re-burned through the engine, and then cleaned by the cat convertor, it's designed for the control of emissions, unless you've tuned your engine to create more power, you don't need to open up the breathers to run more freely, they're perfectly adequate as standard, and running them in to a catch tank is to prevent any oil drips or spray making it the road... but it serves no purpose other than that... just make sure your air box is clean and free from any oil build up and that your breather hoses are free flowing and not kinked or blocked.

      Hi there John.. this bike was a Twin Cam.. and the purge is only relevant on the old model Softails with dry sump and oil tank.. it's to purge the external oil lines which gravity can't drain... but the M8's don't have them, so no need mate. !

    You are the man! Just picked up my first Harley...2005 Deuce. I get itchy if I’m not wrenching on something. I’ve always done my own maintenance. Stoked that I found your
    vids. They cover everything! Rare to find this level of attention to detail these days. I am always a fan of a full oil change. Never understood why people would change their oil with a simple drain and fill. Really just mixes some new oil with some old resulting in a minimal increase in protection. Thanks for helping us yanks out on this side of the pond!

      Thank you brother, you're dead right on the purge change, at least a pint of the old oil never comes out, and that shortens the life of the new oil, not an issue on Dynas, but on the Softails it's a great practice... glad to be of service Sir, stay tuned and keep in touch, we think you will rather like hte next project to be revealed this weekend!

    Great video, modern engine with overhead cams, VVT, turbos, coolers, etc in your cage can also retain up to a quart of oil after a normal drain and refill. That remaining oil will contaminate the new oil, and increase wear, reduce viscosity and increase oxidation, varnish and sludge. Perform a second oil change after running 15 minutes and get a 99% fluid exchange in most cases. Then use the same oil for the next flush or use it in your grocery getter. WIth a full sump of clean oil, it can now do its job much better in protecting and cleaning your engine.

      Whats That?.. a Brand New Street Bob coming this month?.. CONGRATULATIONS Brother.... Welcome to the Dark Side ! and the good news is.. that "purging" only a[[lies to the older Softail models because they are 'dry-sump' and have a separate oil tank...the purge process flushes out the oil trapped in the motor and delivery pipes... but your new Dynatail Harley has a regular Wet-eump design with a sump plug under the engine, so when you take the plug out, ALL the oil comes out, just let it drain out, replace the plug, and refill.. Take care and have lots of fun with the new Pony.!

    Fantastic Video's. All of them. I was confused about one thing though.
    After the 10 revolutions then replacing the oil filter, I noticed the oil level in the tank was not dropping the way I thought it would. I watched you cycle engine, then add oil, cycle, add oil, etc. Basically I was cycling 10 rev's, stopping, cycling 10 more, stopping, etc. Never saw the level in the tank drop until about the 4th or 5th cycle. So my question is, if I'm watching the level in the tank carefully, do I really need to stop at 10 rev's to add more or can I keep cycling until I see the level drop?
    Thanks again for these Video's!

    Great info on the oil purge...
    I almost never trust a dealership to do anything if it isn't profitable to them...
    So purging the oil would be a loss to them, if the oil change is a fixed price, and not based on doing anything right.

    Hi Del
    just finished doing this oil change, i followed all your instructions, the only problem i came across was removing the oil filter, there was no room to get your hands in and the same person must have done it up that did the clutch jam nut up, so it was a quick drive over to the dealership to purchase the filter removing tool (£12 not to bad) so that i could finish the job. thanks again as now through your videos i have done a complete oil change on my bike, look forward to the fork oil video to expand my knowledge.

    Hi Del,
    eXcellent video that inspired me to purge the oil on my sportster 48.
    On a sportster things are a little different.
    The oil return hose is below the oil level, so if you pull it you will make a mess.
    I prepared a spare hose and suspended one end higher than the oil tank and connected it
    to the return of the tank.
    The oil-tank is made of plastic, you must be very careful when removing
    the clamp.
    The sportster has a weaker battery which has not enough capacity for cranking the engine
    when flushing the oil that collects in the sump so I ended up using the power of the engine.
    Fill the new oil filter with oil.
    I was very careful not to run out of oil, watched the oil level and the oil pressure light.
    I topped up the oil tank and flushed one liter until fresh oil apeared, which leaves
    about 1.5 liters in the oil tank.
    All other procedures were the same as in your video.
    Thanks for your great videos.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my goodness, I wished you had asked buddy - you don't do this to Sportsters! Mainly because you can't return the oil properly and there is only a fraction of the oil left in the system anyway, you may have run a litre through it, but the pipework on a Sportster holds barely a cupful of oil, if that... I wouldn't do this again my friend, a) because it's not necessary, and b) if you break that outlet pipe off the tank, they are about £200... ! Glad you got away with it, but I wouldn't prod that dog again mate...

    • @ck-wm9zx
      @ck-wm9zx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moonfleet41 you're right there's only one cup of oil in the hoses.
      Breaking off the outlet pipe from the oil tank would have made up an excuse
      for fabricating a custom one ;-), now the return line has a removable clamp.
      One cup of oil stays in the sump which is located below the level of the oil pump.
      Another cup drips down from the rocker boxes and timing gears.
      3.6 us quarts (3.4l) of oil in the system of which only 2.6l get changed.
      This was a part of the 20k mile service I did for the bike.

    Another excellent and very helpful video, thank you both!
    I will be sure to do the full meal deal "purge" oil change at my next service interval.
    When changing the oil filter, I slide a piece of tin foil under the filter and then "mold" it to the shape of the engine. When you are past the edge of the engine case, just shape the foil into a funnel and voila, the dirty oil runs out into your oil pan instead of all over your engine casing. Carefully crinkle up the tin foil to catch any excess oil and 99% of the clean up is avoided.
    I'm going to take you back to your first video in the series where you said you would be covering fork oil and brake fluid too. I'd be very keen to see how you go about changing the fork oil. Thank you so much for this series of videos, a big thumbs up!!!!
