My 2012 Wide Glide has been sitting for almost three years and I'm getting it back on the road by doing maintenance and upgrades myself. I used to just take the bike to the Harley dealer and say goodbye to my money. Recently I changed the oil with Mobile 1 V-Twin. I plan to use the Mobile 1 when I do the gearbox and primary oil change. Today I replaced some aging grips and brake and clutch levers. Your videos are clear and concise and I appreciate the production quality. I've seen some well intentioned videos where the mechanic doesn't explain anything or the camera doesn't show what the guy is doing. There is nothing like the feeling of doing the wrenching yourself. Thanks for the videos.
You're most welcome, glad the videos help you so much, perhaps you can hit the 'subscribe' button as a form of support, it will help us keep things going! Ride safe, enjoy your projects.
Hi Del... Just changed all the oils on mine through following your video. Thank you so much for this knowledge you have passed on. Its an 09 Dyna Superglide Custom with just shy of 8k on the clock . Had it a few months , changed the engine oil straightaway and just plucked up courage to do the primary and gear .I also changed the derby cover torx screws to new stainless allen heads, new gasket and soon done after following your instructions. Dont think it has ever been touched with what come. Thanks ever so much Del for this and other videos your a honest , straight to the point guy and when you fell down from the tree of knowledge you hit every branch on the way down... Cheers Del
Thank you Sir, that's very kind of you to say those generous words... it's wonderful to be able to share a little basic knowledge to help our fellow riders learn a few tricks and save a few bucks as they say! Take care and have a great week, all the very best, Del
Del and Penny! Thanks for the video! What a team, great wrench, and great camera work! Now a short story of how this one helped me! After 40 years without a bike, last year I bought a 2003 HD Fat Boy, and I am loving it! Last November, I paid a local guy to change engine, trans, and primary oils, before putting the bike away for the winter. Got the bike out a couple of weeks ago and discovered that I had a primary leak, seepage at the inspection cover. I ordered gaskets after seeing your great video. I picked up on your comment about having a hard time finding neutral. My first ride this season, I was definitely having trouble hitting neutral without using my hand. Long story shorter, the gaskets came yesterday, and I found that the primary fluid was high, so I drained some. I certainly wish I had Penny get that camera angle to see the level, but after buttoning it all up, I did find it easier to find neutral with my foot. However, I am wondering if I could drain a little more, as it is not 100% every time. I don't have the confidence to drain more! Anyway, thanks for the video! Stay clear of COVAD-19, and stay healthy! I am Michigan in the states. But just wanted to say that my Great Great Grandfather was from Appleby England, not that it matters, but still wanted to say! Happy Easter!
Hi Brian, good to hear from you Sir, and we have some very good friends who live in Detroit, but Michigan is a big place so perhaps not near you! Good to hear you've found the source of your heavy clutch, too much oil can glue the plates together and make it difficult to find that neutral, and it can make it very heavy going in to gear for the first time in the morning... don't worry about draining too much out, why not just drain the whole lot, replace the bung and replace the oil to the correct level? It's not ultra critical, it needs to just touch the bottom of the clutch plates... and if it's been laid for a while, they can get stickier anyway, so that should improve with use. Great to hear you have ancestors from England, they say we're all related in some way or another! Keep safe at this crazy time, thank you for your kind message and welcome back to the dark side, ride safe, Del
@@Moonfleet41 Sounds like good advice! I will do that! Weather was nice this morning, and although it did not last long, I got about a 36 mile ride. It was a smile a mile! Happy Easter! Brian
Del and Penny... fyi, update! Took your advice and changed the primary oil. I also adjusted the primary chain! Guess what, I can now find neutral! It worked. One issue, is I ordered a the new inspection cover gasket from JP Cycles on-line. Although their website said it would fit my Fatboy, and it did fit, the James gasket cracked, and leaked oil. I thought I had over torqued it, so I ordered a new torque wrench, and another gasket. I torqued this one spec, and guess what, it also leaked. This time, I went to the HD shop and got a HD gasket, and no leaks! All JP Cycles support would do was say sorry. I learned several big lessons, One you can't trust JPCycles.con , they don't stand behind what they advertise, and bad reviews on their site to warn others, do not get posted. Now had they given me a credit for the cost of two gaskets, I would had turned around and put in another order for some things I would like. It's not a big $ amount, but a principle issue.... They have a credibility issue. Save time and money, go to the Harley shop to get your parts. Hope you two are staying healthy ! Brian
I don't know what I'd do without your priceless info del...I hate going to the dealer to ask about such topics as this video tells... I really appreciate your efforts brother... I know this is an old video, but I recently picked up a 2003 cvo road king from a dealer, rode it all week, checked the tranny fluid to find an empty trans... Yoh
Dayum, that's ridicilous, you'd think they'd at least check the fluids... perhaps if it was an independent dealer that doesn't deal with Harleys maybe they're not aware they have three oil holes, but if it was a Harley dealer, then that's pretty embarassing for them... I guess you've topped it up now, or is there anything I can help with buddy?
Oil does not "break down". It just gets dirty. Recycled oil is simply filtered of contaminants and is good as new and available to buy at the local store.
Good video as usual. Del, you have the unique skill of explaining things in a simple but complete way without assuming an air of superiority. Thanks! Good job, both of you.
Hi buddy, thank you for those kind words, I'm no specialist, or technician, just old school mechanic, and I really love sharing what I do know with those who may not... we should all share a little something, then we're all a little wiser aye?! Thanks for your support, it's much appreciated!
I just bought my first Harley 2004 dyna wide glide And I've been checking out different maintenance videos and yours are the ones I will be saving and referring to,very thorough and precise, good job guys!
Great videos .. I have a 04 Road King ..this is my first Harley first year..I like your videos because you go into great details on each part of services on the Harley… thank you
Hey Del, It's nice to see someone do a video on basic maintenance for the new guy that haven't done one before. Do yourself a favor and if you plan on keeping the Harley, get yourself a primary funnel from HD- Part Number 63797-10 or aftermarket for about $11.00. It makes filling the primary so much easier as it clips on and stays there until you pull it off. I used a funnel similar to the one you used for years until I helped a friend that had one and the next day I picked up one for myself. Keep them coming. Later bud
Cheers buddy, I'm proud to say I paid 99p for that funnel, well not exactly, it was a set of 3 in different sizes, that being the middle one, so 33p each, and that gladdens my cynical ol' heart, it truly does! And best of all, Penny's not even noticed it's missing from the kitchen yet lol... Seriously, though appreciate that buddy, and also appreciate your kind support!
Watching you videos for a while now and it gave me the confidence to change all the fluids on my ninja. Also had a go a painting the bottom of your fairing from watching you paint this Harley. Took a lot more rubbing down time than I expected. You have been inspirational to say the least!
Hi Martin, thank you so much for that cool feedback, it's great to know we've inspired you in some way, and yeah, welcome to the world of painting! The prep is long, boring and tedious and the painting itself is just the last little fun bit! ... But isn't it cool when you get a great result you can stand back and be proud of?!
@@Moonfleet41 it's not a perfect job hence why I did the bottom. However, I am confident with more practice it's going to get better. Just ordered some tough black to repair my street triples engine casing which the shop managed to drop. Thank you for making these videos!
@@martinfleming7001 Best of luck with it made, shame the bike shop didn't offer to repair for you... clumsy aye! Like I said, just take yer time, it's all in the prep, hope it goes well, am sure it'll look fantastic!

Very helpful video, the shop manual explanation of oil level for the primary was not as clear as you made it for someone like me who is new to this whole thing, and the trick with the piece of wire is great for someone with old eyes like mine! :)
haha mine too buddy, you need all the help you can get as the years roll by aye?! Just tell yourself that your wisdom replaces your failing senses as you get older lol

Thank you, Del and Penny, for instructional and simple skills videos. Even though this is basic maintenance I find them very helpful and always learn something new! Happy Easter to both of you 😀
Hey Harold, great to hear from you Sir, and thanks for noticing, yes we pitch these at the novice and beginner, just to see if we can inspire a little confidence in taking those first steps to do the basics on your pride and joy! Have a fantastic weekend buddy, keep in touch, Del
Hi Matt, Great to see you today, and we all had a great time ,and wasn't it good that it wasn't too packed yet... probably will be by Sunday though aye..lol.... Take care mate and keep in touch... Del.
Thank you Del, a really clear video that’s easy to follow. If only everything in life was this easy! Keep up the good work . Regards Mark in sunny Cornwall .
The service manual for my 2014 Dyna Low Rider says the trans dipstick should be screwed in so the o-ring just touches, and the level checked while on the side stand. I don't know why they aren't consistent.
This was a 2005 bike, lots of small changes on Harley motors in 9 years... it can lead to problems which is why it's important to keep aware of the little details... on the new M8 they actually print the instructions on the dipstick itself now.!
Another good video Del & Penny. I had a wee issue with my Sportster today, brake light is permanently on so I googled it hoping for a decent video on how to fix was so glad to see you had done one a while ago as you explain everything so well for a relative novice to follow. Gonna have a go at it tomorrow morning
Moonfleet41 took it apart this morning but no luck brake light still on. The switch moves cleanly and easily and when I push it in all the way by hand the brake light stays on.
@@alanpaterson5395 Really? That sounds odd... it would, perhaps, indicate that it's further within the switch that somehow it's not breaking the contact, but before you go in to that, have you checked the back brake switch? It's usually a pressure switch within the hydraulic brake line!
Moonfleet41 thanks Del I disconnected the back switch this morning and that seems to be the problem as as soon as it was disconnected the brake light went out. (Came back on when I pulled the front lever) Thanks Again
It's really odd how the gearbox oil looked fine but was actually really bad. I remember the video where you showed the tearing strength of oil between your finger and thumb. It's not always how it looks. The engine oil was awful, that's almost like sludge. It's a bit shitty that there's no window glass to see the oil level too. Thanks Del, good video. Hope you and Penny are having a lovely easter. the weather we've had so far is gorgeous and I've been making the most of it. Went for a long lovely ride up through Brecon and Carmarthenshire two days ago and saw so many bikers, my neck is aching I've been doing that little nod so much =P
Hey John, good to hear from you buddy.. yeah the engine oil did look a little nasty aye.. but thats largely due to carbon from the combustion process contaminating the oil and making it black.. the gearbox and primary on these bikes are completely isolated from the engine and therefore don't get carbon in them to make them black...all the more reason to change the oil on time aye, even if it looks clean.! Hope you're enjoying your Easter break too, Jealous of you having the stunning beauty of Brecon to ride around, and yeah, this weekend has been awesome.. some proper hot sunshine and wall to wall blue skies, making the most of it again today, gonna get out and enjoy it while it lasts.... ride safe and keep in touch buddy... Del.
Different models vary, but on this bike engine oil and gearbox oil on the jiffy stand, primary oil upright... but check the manual for your particular model!
If only I had it that simple for my transmission oil change. Softail Night Train drain plug is up between the shocks which isnt that hard to reach with standard shocks but when you got a Shotgun Shock (Air Ride) as I have then you have to undo the shock from the frame at one end and let it hang down to access the plug, but then you need the hanging clearance. Guess thats why I havent done it in 4 years. Not looking forward to when I have to do it. Happy Easter weekend to you both.
Hey Volvi, I don't envy you that, am fully aware of that little headache, it's so often the case when we modify things, if you do high mileage, you can fit a remote tube, a bit like the Softail tank drain, fit a union to the gearbox drain hole (90degree elbow, use Goodrich hardware), then run a braided hose sideways to a convenient place o the frame rail and secure it with a metal P-clip and you can just put a drain bung in the hose, like a Sportster oil drain hose... doesn't cost much, easy to do whilst you've got the air ride dropped out, then you won't have to go back to it again! ... happy Easter to you too, keep in touch, ride safe!
Your videos have to be the best instruction vids on youtube,i dont have or want to have a HD but just in case someone asks me about oil in a harley then ill know thanks again Del
Hi. I’m about to do my primary and tranny oil change. Manual says do it on the kickstand clymers says bike should be upright. I’m a bit confused now. I got a 2010 street bob.
Hi again I have a 1995 roadking I hate a strange tin metal swirling noise when driving . It happens really if I don't change the gear down and labour the engine a bit. So I thought it may be the compensator nut being loose but when I checked I found metal shaving . Any idea where to start here ? videos and excellent Thanks again oh I have a video of the noise and a picture of the pieces I found of metal in primary case.
It's impossible to diagnose a noise form a description of it Sinead, so it's not worth me guessing. The best thing is to service the transmission side completely, new oil, clutch and chain adjustment, get all that correct, change the gearbox oil too... then ride the bike, and if the noise persists, then i would drop the primary cover off for further investigation. They are mechanically noisy anyway, and a small amount of fine metal debris in the primary drain plug is inevitable and quite normal for general wear and tear..!
Thanks Jez, Yeah, this was the kind of thing we set the channel up for in the first place.. great to be doing a few still... Clutch and Primary adjustment up next, just got to edit the footage..! Thanks for your support buddy... Del.
@@nicholasmasouris2702 OK, you should have the dipstick attached to the inside of the cap?? Has it been broken off maybe?? Provided it's the same bike as in this video.
Happy Easter Del Penny , useful video again , strange to see the 20/50 v thicker gear oil , May try it on my next service , take care ride safe , just setting off for an Easter egg ride 😀
Hey Tony, great to hear from you buddy, a common misconception that, the transmission oil for your Harley is 50w, if you buy the part numbered formula plus, you won't see the viscosity anywhere on the bottle, but Harley techs will tell you that it is 50w... only cars use EP90, and even still that's not so common any more... Have a great time this weekend, look forward to seeing you soon buddy, still got your pipes here!
Enjoy learning from your videos, my question is can I use the same bottles of syn 3 on all three holes, Or is it gear oil, clutch oil, engine oil all three different bottles. 🤔
You can do both, Syn3 is rated for all three uses, but I now use Amsoil separate oils instead, the thicker oil in the gearbox makes a difference, gear shifts are quieter and smoother, and the engine runs a little cooler... other than that, these oils are rated to be multi-use if you choose to.
Hi from America just your opinion for my primary oil. I have the same model but mines an 05. I did the clutch adjustment in your other video and the bike I bought was from a dealer but not Harley and believe they put the wrong oil in primary as my bike is a pain to get in neutral and misses first to second and I have to shift up again as it goes in neutral when it acts up. I was told it might be the gear oil and I’m told put Amsoil or Syn3 by different people. What do you suggest as I was also told all three oils can be the same. What do you recommend for oil and weight for primary? Also I’m the same guy who asked you about the tire for a wider front Dyna Wide Glide and need to know where you got the front fender I have a new glide fender but want a Fat boy fender since my rim is an 09 Fat boy chrome 25mm bearings so I bought reducers to 3.75”axle but can’t find fender. Thanks again!
Hi there, primary fluid can be many things and still work successfully, I've used ATF and even fork oil and it's fine because they're both very thin, but have seen a few people make the mistake of putting a heavier gear oil in the primary, on the thinking that it will lubricate the primary chain, but they forget that it glues the clutch plates together, so perhaps that's what's happened with yours. You can, indeed, use Syn3 in the primary, you can use Amsoil engine oil 20W50 in your pirmary, in both cases on the bottle is printed 'engine, transmission & primary', but the best results I've ever had are with Amsoil specified Primary Fluid, it transformed my gear changes and clutch operation, specially when using the dedicated Amsoil Gear Oil in the actual gearbox, so I hope that helps................... With your fender, I run a FatBoy fender on my Dyna WideGlide, with a 16" wheel, and I got it from W&W Cycles in Germany, but they post worldwide, so here's a link: www.wwag.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WebSite.woa/wa/DirectAction?page=%21163483 they don't always shave everything in stock, so contact them with any enquiries!
Hey Del. Big fan bud, hands down most informative Harley vids on line. Saving your total viewers hundreds of thousands while educating us. Truly Lovely. Question Del - In a previous Sportster primary change saw you used ATF. Used it and it’s been fluid as butter since. Is it possible to use synth ATF for Dyna gear box and primary as well?
hello from a fan from Belgium, I have a small question for dyna street bob 1690cc 2014 and forty eight 2013, can I put 20w50 mineral for engine?? a big thank you thanks to you I learn a lot of things hhh
Excellent video! How often should you do this? I have a Lowrider with 6700 miles. I had the 5000 mile complete service done at Harley a little over a year ago.
It's in your service schedule buddy, on this bike it was every 5k miles, so when you had yours done, they should have done these oils, and they'll do them again at the 10k along with longer term jobs like the critical fastener check etc.!
hello I have a question, primary oil and gear oil, are they the same? I bought "spectrum primary oil 85W". can i put it on both primary and gear? I own 2008 FXDB dyna tnx
No mate, you cannot use that in a primary, it's way too thick, it will cause your clutch plates to stick together and be almost impossible to engage gear without it stalling... the 85W oil is good for a gearbox, but your primary needs a much lighter oil, if you don't have a dedicated primary oil, you can use fork oil, or even automatic transmission fluid or just plain engine oil is ok. All the oil does in your primary is lubricate the primary chain and keep the clutch from overheating, so a thinner oil is fine (and you only need just under a quart of oil).
I totally agree with you about not over tightening the drain plug on the primary, I was looking at the factory service manual & the crappy owners one & they now give a torque value to tighten of 14 --21 ft lb (19---28•5 Nm), very vague isn't it, Also they say to have the bike on the jiffy stand when checking gearbox levels, that sounds like a load of crap to me, how could you get a proper reading👍👍😎
Hi Geoff, bikes do vary my friend, some check upright, and some on the jiffy, just depends how your gearbox is configured... generally the rule of thumb (but not always) is that a stiff dipstick cast or moulded as part of the cap would be upright, and a swiveling dipstick with a ball joint would be o the jiffy stand... but that's not in the oil tank on the Sportster, it's the opposite... so always check your service book or handbook for YOUR exact bike, including the right model year... cos Harley are even prone to change things on the same bike as the years progress! Good ol' Harley aye, no such thing as a rule of thumb!
@@Moonfleet41 you're quite right there Del, I noticed when I bought a dipstick with a temp gauge on it (HD one) it was the swivel one. All the best both x 👍👍😎
@@bryanmiller5074 OK, oil level must be bottom of the plates (as im sure you know), if it's still slipping.. try carrying out a clutch centre screw adjustment to set the correct freeplay. if it was mine, and still slipped after this, id drop the plates out for a look..!
The very name "Syn3" is do signify that they intend the oil to be good for all three holes.. Engine, Transmission and Primary case, some argue that the specific oils are better for the specific jobs.. but talk to HD and they will tell you that the Syn3 exceeds the requirements for all three uses... i have it in my 99 DWG and its quiet, and the clutch disengages smoothly first time every time even from stone cold.. none of the heavy clunk you get with thicker oils..!!! So it's your choice buddy,.. im happy with it FWIW..
I love watching your hints. I put an s &s teardrop air cleaner on my bike. It rode fine for about twenty miles, then it dies when I come to a stop sign. It starts up in neutral but keeps dying. I ended up towing it to my home. I plan on taking it into the HD dealer, any idea what could be the problem? It may not be related to the intake at all.
Thanks for the great vids! On my 2010 Dyna Superglide Custom the owners manual says for the Transmission oil it must be on the Side Stand. ALWAYS look at the maintenance manual and the owners manual as stated by Del
Hi Del and thanks for your videos. It's been a great help with my thruxton in the past and now with my 06 fat Bob. One question about the transmission and primary capacities, every where I look it states 1 quart (US) for this leves and the equivalent is 948ml aprox. On the video you say is 750ml aprox on each hole. Can you throw some light on this? Also, I'm thinking of using Motul 7100 20w50 which I believe is suitable for all three holes as well, any advice on this would be appreciated. Saludos desde Tenerife!!
Hi Pedro, OK, both the Transmission and Primary case have indicated levels, for the Trans it will be a dipstick, and for the Primary you fill to the bottom of the clutch plates (viewed through the open derby cover hole)... so just go with that, bikes vary from model to model and year to year over time.. the level is what's more important than the quantity, you will never get all the old oil out unless you strip and dry out the cavity, which means you will always have a varied amount of old oil left behind to throw any quantities out.. all those manual specified quantities pertain to the cavity being bone dry. So fill to the correct level with all oil levels on the bike. As for the oil choice, there are many oils that state they are fine for all three holes, and i used to do this too, with Screaming Eagle Syn3, but if you want a slightly better solution, then i now use dedicated oils for the job... in my Dyna im using Amsoil Primary Fluid in the primary, and the Amsoil thick Transmission oil in the gearbox... the gears change smoother and more quietly, and the bike even cruises smoother in top gear at low speed... so maybe something to consider.. i have a video on this is you wanted to check it out.. long test ride and then a review at the end.. th-cam.com/video/6CytGCwgrKY/w-d-xo.html
No buddy, not unless it's damaged, it will either be the original rubber ring, which fits in to a groove, or it may be the updated fibre disc with a red rubber circle embossed on it, either way, if you slip a layer of regular grease over the mating surface, then it's re-usable... you'll generally get half a dzoen uses out of one of those gaskets... Hope that helps you buddy, good luck with it...!
Not any synthetic, but certainly the Sreamin' Eagle Syn3 is designed for that purpose, it's in the name 'Syn3', designed for all three holes... some challenge that the specific for each hole are better to use, but Harley Davidson recommend that the 'Syn3' is better quality, and higher specificaiton, that the dedicated oils, so I guess that leaves us to make our own choices.
Hi buddy, Screamin' Eagle SYN3 isn't just engine oil... it's a high quality synthetic oil suitable for all three holes... have a read up on it, it's available from your dealer and exceeds all the recommended oils... great for your Sportster!
Dell that Primary oil looked a little milkey ,I don't remember if you checked the clutch ? But it could be from sitting for a while . I know you have it under control .
Cheers Jim, it did indeed, and smelt sulphurous ....for what it costs, a lousy pint and a half of oil, am gonna change it again in 500miles, which is about a month, or so, and if it's the same, or anything but clean, then I think it's time to pull the cover off and drop the clutch out for a look-see! It had sat for a little while and it was a tiny bit overdue for a service, so we shall see!
Sealant on an oil drain plug? Don't recall seeing that before, is that a Harley thing or a personal preference? Or maybe I've just been missing it on all my bikes. lol!
Personal preference ever since I trained a a diesel fitter, specially as engines get older and that plug has been in and out a hundred times, better than winding it up tighter if it weeps!

You do a great job taking the time to explain and demonstrate. Thank you.
You are very welcome
Congratulations on the new bike mate.. Have fun with it, and thanks for your support.
I was looking for a oil change vidio for my 2000 Dyna, found you again Del Boy, thanks again you are the best on you tube mate.
Thanks buddy, Glad to help.
Great videos .. I have a 04 Road King ..this is my first Harley first year..I like your videos because you go into great details on each part of services on the Harley… thank you
Most welcome mate. Glad to help!
Hey man my dad just wanted me to tell ya you saved his life today with this video haha. He greatly appreciated this
Really Nick? What happened? Glad to know the video was of help in whatever way it did, ride safe both, Del
My Harley is due for some service too. Will be knocking their same task out later this week. Good video! Ride safe!
Hey brother, great to hear from ya, good luck with yours, without a video and commentary, it's a short fun process and you can usually knock it out before lunch!
Moonfleet41 I know what you mean. I often think just knock this out or make it take half a a day and make it a you tube video.LOL
I don't understand why ppl hit the dislike button in these kind of videos
Very helpful video, the shop manual explanation of oil level for the primary was not as clear as you made it for someone like me who is new to this whole thing, and the trick with the piece of wire is great for someone with old eyes like mine! :)
haha mine too buddy, you need all the help you can get as the years roll by aye?! Just tell yourself that your wisdom replaces your failing senses as you get older lol
Another nice how to video Del, which will help a lot of people for years to come. Penny and you have a relaxing Easter. Cheers
We hope so buddy, these videos are what we founded the channel on 8 years ago..! have a happy and relaxing break too.. D&Px
Very useful video. Greetings from new Harley owner, Zagreb, Croatia
Congratulations on your new Harley Davor, we both wish you many happy, safe miles on it... we have plenty of Harley maintenance videos in our Playlist to help you, thanks for getting in touch!
Instablaster...
Great video!!! Thank you!!!, You removed a lot of the mystery and my reluctance to do it myself has also been removed!!!!
Thank you Patrick. Glad it helped!
The diaphragm spring on mine has a section of yellow paint on it I guess for contrast to see the level easier.
Good info damn good info ,every time I see one Delboys videos I think of all the work I got to do to mine cleaning it and changing the fluids ,damn
Nice to meet you and Mr Dyson today at swanage. bike looks even more awesome in the flesh.
Hi Matt, Great to see you today, and we all had a great time ,and wasn't it good that it wasn't too packed yet... probably will be by Sunday though aye..lol.... Take care mate and keep in touch... Del.
I love how thorough you are. Great videos!
Thanks so much!
Question , where is the water inlet and outlet ?
The Same t40 is suitable for removing transmission and crank case oil drain plug?
Excellent. Thank you. Do you use anything on the thread of the primary grub screw drain plug?
Most welcome John.. you can use a couple of turns of PTFE plumbers tape round the thread, that will ensure a good seal.!
Followed all your advice on these oil changes Del, and perfect as are all your video's Cheers Del
Most welcome buddy, Glad to help.
How satisfying it is being newly lubed, a most important task.. Good camera work Penny..
Thank you Del, a really clear video that’s easy to follow.
If only everything in life was this easy! Keep up the good work .

Thanks Mark, glad it helped you mate.
Good seeing that super looking HD looked after so nicely by Dr. Del.
Hope you both are doing well!

Hi Gary, good to hear from you, hope you're travels are going well... have a great weekend and chat soon!
Moonfleet41 yessir... travels are going ok, except for one major disappointment during “bath time”. 😢
How many miles were on that bike since the last trans fluid change?
Good with it Alan, hope it fixes it for you, happy if you get stuck, you can give us a shout, always happy to help if we can!
Thanks Boss ! I not even knew I have to change Primary oil ( DuH) Now I Know Thanks to you.
Hi Del, nice video. I don't have a Harley but it's interesting to see the difference with other bikes. Thanks. Gus
Hey Gus, always good to hear from you...! Hope you're enjoying the warm sunny weather, have a wonderful Easter weekend, keep in touch my friend!
Del.
Does the bike have to be straight up or on kickstand when checking transmission fluid level??
Must not ride that much then..
Did you decide not to put the small wind fairing on ?
Thanks, always good to save money, by doing it yourself!
I like your videos. I want to remove my front shocks and have them power coated. Do you have a vedio for that?
Excellent as usual. These are the vids that mean so much. Thanks and please keep them coming.
Thanks Jez, Yeah, this was the kind of thing we set the channel up for in the first place.. great to be doing a few still... Clutch and Primary adjustment up next, just got to edit the footage..! Thanks for your support buddy... Del.
Always appreciate these maintenance videos, thank you.
Thanks buddy, simple house keeping stuff aye.
Fairly new to riding how often should I do a total fluid change like that?
Check your service schedule in your handbook mate.. Harley service fluids every 5k miles.
Very well explained step by step instructions 👍🏻
I don’t have a dip stick, roughly how much oil did you have to put? Quarter bottle, half, 3/4?
"Up the bottom of the clutch plates" is the level stated in the manual.
@@Moonfleet41 that’s for the primary though. I mean the transmission.
@@nicholasmasouris2702 OK, you should have the dipstick attached to the inside of the cap?? Has it been broken off maybe?? Provided it's the same bike as in this video.
this is about the same on an evo dyna?
Another easy to follow video Dell ,love the pound shop funnel been as the HD one is about £15 👍
Excellent mate, this one was 99p but what I didn't' say in the video, was that was for a pack of 3 lol
Thank you very good videos. Much appreciated. Explained. Perfect

Delboy saves the day again!
Enjoy learning from your videos, my question is can I use the same bottles of syn 3 on all three holes,
Or is it gear oil, clutch oil, engine oil all three different bottles.
@Delboy's Garage thanks, happy new year to delboy's garage.
Hai bro...my Harley Davidson Fatboy debry Cover screws looks like sized... please tell me how to take it out
Hi from America just your opinion for my primary oil.
Wonderful!!
Always wonderful!!!
Best wishes my friend 🤓👍
Thank you David, much appreciated as always!
I can’t find the oil change video. Any way to could link it here? Thanks
It's all in the Playlist, in order, if you check the Channel and care to look... here's a link anyway: th-cam.com/video/IidY_snQcko/w-d-xo.html
Not gearbox mate, that needs a thicker oil, but ATF is fine for a primary as you've found from personal experience... ride safe buddy...
hello from a fan from Belgium, I have a small question for dyna street bob 1690cc 2014 and forty eight 2013, can I put 20w50 mineral for engine?? a big thank you thanks to you I learn a lot of things hhh
Excellent video, what about the critical fasteners? Do u usually check them? Thanks
Yes, if its a 10K service, check them every time.
Another excellent video for future reference. Thanks D&P 👍
Thanks Keith, just a little one for the reference bank whilst I'm waiting for parts for the build!
Nice shirt men 💪🏼💪🏼🤘🏽
Excellent video!
Thanks for the reply, I wrote you an email
What SAE the best for the primary mate?
Nothing special mate, good quality engine oil will do if you're stuck.. or better still just use ordinary primary fluid, readily available now !
Nice T-shirt! Greetings from Portugal.
Why do I feel like I just watched a mechanical version of the Gordon Ramsay show? 🤣 You two must have lived close to each other at some point.
Yeah, i get that a lot, can't see it myself though..!!!
excellent bit of footage.
What was the black sealer you used?
Great video as always sir :-) Thank you!

I appreciate you not using the usual song ;)
Great video Bro It’s always good to learn more stuff especially if you own a dyna Happy Eastern 👍
Hey Joe, good to hear from you brother, Have a Happy Easter break too... D&Px
Will running low on gear oil cause rev up but no acceleration ?
NO.. sounds like you're describing clutch slip.! check your primary oil level first.!
Primary was low... Plates look fine... Every gear felt like first...
@@bryanmiller5074 OK, oil level must be bottom of the plates (as im sure you know), if it's still slipping.. try carrying out a clutch centre screw adjustment to set the correct freeplay. if it was mine, and still slipped after this, id drop the plates out for a look..!
So how did your choice of oil work ?
sorry all 3 holes same oil?
Is the Syn 3 ok for the primary and trans on an 02 dyna low rider as well ?
The very name "Syn3" is do signify that they intend the oil to be good for all three holes.. Engine, Transmission and Primary case, some argue that the specific oils are better for the specific jobs.. but talk to HD and they will tell you that the Syn3 exceeds the requirements for all three uses... i have it in my 99 DWG and its quiet, and the clutch disengages smoothly first time every time even from stone cold.. none of the heavy clunk you get with thicker oils..!!! So it's your choice buddy,.. im happy with it FWIW..
The advertising was quite stupid for this video. Glad it’s over
I love watching your hints.
Probably needs a tune
Thanks for the great vids! On my 2010 Dyna Superglide Custom the owners manual says for the Transmission oil it must be on the Side Stand.
ALWAYS look at the maintenance manual and the owners manual as stated by Del
Exactly right Jim, they seem to change that rule model by model as the years roll by.. manual is bible..!!!!
Thank you very much for taking the time for such an extended answer. Will follow your advice on the specific oils.
Thanks again mate 👍
Fab tutorials Del and Penny.... 👏👏
Loving this series ...thank you
Cheers buddy, just trying to help other Dyna owners save a little money! Have a great weekend, D&Px
Thanks matey, nice and clear. V helpful
Del, do you need a new gasket every time you take the Derby cover off to just check the oil level?...
Bleeding brakes with abs any different from standard brakes
Nope, just the same.
Great vid! So let me get this straight. I can use FULL SYNTHETIC 20W-50 on all three holes right?
Not any synthetic, but certainly the Sreamin' Eagle Syn3 is designed for that purpose, it's in the name 'Syn3', designed for all three holes... some challenge that the specific for each hole are better to use, but Harley Davidson recommend that the 'Syn3' is better quality, and higher specificaiton, that the dedicated oils, so I guess that leaves us to make our own choices.
Are Harley's known to make a loud clank when shifting gears ?
@@justinrenz364 Yes
But the info is invaluable differently worth the time to watch
Thanks a lot ! Very helpful
Most welcome mate!
Seems many oils these days are referenced as acceptable for all three (3) changes
👍👍👍.
Happy Easter weekend 😊.
Thanks, you too Christopher, enjoy your holiday and thanks for your support!
Engine oil for engine, gearbox and chain case. Would that be the same for a 2001 Sportster? Thanks for these great helpful videos.
Hi buddy, Screamin' Eagle SYN3 isn't just engine oil... it's a high quality synthetic oil suitable for all three holes... have a read up on it, it's available from your dealer and exceeds all the recommended oils... great for your Sportster!
Cheers for that.
Happy Easter to you and yours Del
Thanks buddy, you too mate, have a great weekend, and keep in touch! D&Px
It had sat for a little while and it was a tiny bit overdue for a service, so we shall see!
thanks for the video
Sealant on an oil drain plug? Don't recall seeing that before, is that a Harley thing or a personal preference? Or maybe I've just been missing it on all my bikes. lol!
Personal preference ever since I trained a a diesel fitter, specially as engines get older and that plug has been in and out a hundred times, better than winding it up tighter if it weeps!
