    I've been into tiny houses for a while now. While their popularity has grown, there still aren't a ton of resources as far as seeing what it really takes to make one, start to finish. This is an awesome series and it's great that you're sharing each step and tips along the way. Good work!

      I just came across with you and your ¨open-source¨ library. My brother and I have a trailer workshop (utilitary mostly) and I have a design brand and make upcycled furniture. What´s so special about you guys is that it´s so unusual to find someone with the perfect balance in generousity, fine execution and aeasthetic taste (matching yours even if you are thousands of miles away). It´s common to find stuff you´d change partially or think you´d probably make differently or maybe you just find a picture or incomplete information. I was thinking to make some trailer homes and keep them in a piece of land I own in the mountains. I now have enough material to decide if they ´ll either be fixed or wheeled homes to rent. Finding you made my day! I am happy to follow. A huge thanks for sharing! regards from Colombia

    We can really see where your experience with editing and video presentation for your DIY projects is standing you in good stead. This is by far the clearest and easiest to understand series on any tiny house I have seen. I am not going to build a tiny house...but I was raised in a trailer (8 X 35 for 3 years and then 'the big house' 8 X 46 for the next 10...Navy family..so the only way to own something and not lose money reselling a house every 2-4 years). Having that experience..these sort of make me nostalgic and I am always interested to see the solutions for storage and room configuration. Thank you so much for all the tips and details. I am going to redo a wall in my kitchen and this info will make me feel a good deal more secure as I have only built furniture and shelving up to this point.

    Nice job! I like the idea of building the walls along the eave sides in 1 whole section. Just an idea though. You could omit those oversized headers and put a 2x on the flat between the king studs. There's not much load above and this would reduce weight and thermal bridging. Looks great though!

    really good work you guys. Thanks for sharing, I'm curious, how heavy do these suckers end up being? let's say a 20'er... do you need a 1/2 ton to haul it? are they easy to lug around, like a travel trailer, like for weekend or is it sort of a hassle to move them?

    Can't wait to see your choice in doors and windows. I would imagine you need great insulation value in your climate.
    Did anyone ask you about your choice of trailer? Where you find a good one, what you'd avoid, and what to look for in reinforcing at the front end to be sure it can carry the weight. I frame like you do. If I had that shop space, I'd put in an overhead crane (even if lightweight) and lift the walls. Can't wait to see your progress.

    • @jacobwhite9909

      Thanks. I've followed sooo many things on Ana White plans, and the whole MomPlex build. So much fun. We bought an old lift mechanism on wheels (was used for big bore pipes) and we've used it to set much bigger beams and walls. It was a hand crank (with ratchet) but we hooked it up to drill driver for better speed. Handy for many years.

    We are in the planning stages right now for a shed conversion into a tiny home but this has me thinking that putting it on wheels might be a better option. Love the design, just needs a bathroom! Thanks for going over the "why's". One question, are you concerned about movement or racking in your windows/doors? That's always been my big question about tiny homes that travel.

    • @jacobwhite9909
      @jacobwhite9909 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for Windows and doors and movement. I thought this might be a problem myself but after framing and spray foaming the wall cavities this tiny house is very solid. Don't for see a problem but Alaskan roads aren't the best either.

    You guys are great and I love what you are doing. I look forward to your episodes. I know you are going with an outhouse due to weather concerns. When you made your plans did you ever sketch in a space for a bathroom even though you are not putting one in?

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christopher King Thanks! We've had so much interest in the outhouse that we are considering building a second tiny house (will probably sell since we personally won't need it) with full plumbing and utilities. For this tiny house, to add a bathroom, I'd put it over by the kitchen where the end door is. I could definitely do a plan variation with a bathroom for you.

    Great vids guys! I have a request - Some tiny house builders go with 16 on center and some 24 on center. Can you discuss a bit more about the pros and cons of going with 24? I'm trying to decide which is best for mine. I'll be moving it twice a year from so cal to nor cal.

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kitty Bell HI Kitty! Awesome to hear you are planning to go Tiny! if we could live in it full time we would (active kids + extreme Alaska climate = indoors for a big part of the year - very envious of your better climate) but just doesn't make sense for us at this point in our life. The big reason you go 16" on center is for a stronger wall. But these walls are so small, and the roof the walls support is so small, I really can't see any pros to going 16" on center. After framing these walls (and adding spray foam which really creates a rigid, strong wall) I wonder if we did overkill on the framing and could have gotten away with even less (ie no jack studs, smaller headers, no cripples over jack studs) as they do in "Advanced Framing" would look into that to keep the weight down, save money on materials, and take out some steps when framing.

    hello you guys look like u do amazing work I have a few questions. I have a unfinished tiny house and its a wreck. It was partially built by my ex husband. he wad not a professional at all and one thing u said that really worried or two things is it was not leveled out when we first started even though I told him it needed to be and the framing is horrible due to the fact that it is only put together by screws. I have no clue where to start to correct these major problems without starting all over. I need alot help and advise.

  • @jeh02571
    @jeh02571 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there, please tell me if this is a bad suggestion, but another way you can get the openings is by drilling a hole once the plywood is up and then using a router. This way if you are not comfortable using a circular saw, or are weary of your lines, you will have an exact guide for the cutout. Finish rounded corners with a hand saw.

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you put that first wall up at 5:30, how did you secure it to the floor? Bolts? Nails?

    • @chrislett5093
      @chrislett5093 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen people use self tapping screws with washers and other people have used bolts. I personally Like the bolts to already be welded to the frame and then to secure my base down with large washers and nuts. I think bolts, washers and nuts add more strength to your foundation. This is extremely important for traveling 70 Mph down the interstate to a new location.

  • @noviceprepper5397
    @noviceprepper5397 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for another interesting video. Why did you decide on wood instead of steel framing? It's my understanding that steel is one third the weight of wood, which I'm assuming makes the tiny house less expensive to move. Thank you and regards.

    • @donsjuand
      @donsjuand 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trade off between wood and metal is initial product savings/weight increase vs fuel transport savings/weight savings. Also steel requires different tooling. Personal preference if one has constructed from both can also play a role.

    Hi Ana and Jacob :-)
    First of all thanks for sharing this build. I'm planning to make something similar as a small cottage in Norway. I will follow every step of your build to learn as much as I can... ;-)
    In this video Ana say that we can find the plans on your blog. I have checked and I can't find it. Am I looking in the wrong place or is it work in progress?
    Best Regards Tom

    Ana, I grew up in a carpenter household, but my dad wasn't keen on letting me use anything with a rotating/reciprocating blade lol so I never really got much experience with it. And though I don't scare easy, I can't say I'm super confident when I think about picking it up to start doing my own projects. Any hints to help?
    Also, I haven't held a nail gun in my hands for about 8 years now and even then it was more of my dad pointing, and I was shooting. I know you said you guys had other projects coming up, but I wondered if you could possibly do some how-to basics some time in the future? In this vid you went through the wall process of this tiny house, but if there could be a tutorial series that were more detailed on things for improving on existing structures? For instance framing out a wall, interior and exterior. Hanging a door, interior and exterior, and windows, etc., and what details there are for each, why you do it this way or that, just like you do how you do.
    I want to enclose our back porch and make it a work room, this would move the current back door from where it is now to the new back wall. I just need to create 3 walls, 1 exterior door and X windows. It's just a box up really, it's already got a roof. I know it's not impossible if you know what you're doing. I just... don't exactly lol
    I've never asked anything like this of anyone on youtube, you're the only construction instruction person I can watch. For my dad it was Bob Villa lol I'll take you for my generation!

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jodie, Thank you so much. I did not grow up using tools either, but we are changing that with the next generation, right? I'd suggest having someone who uses tools give you a hands on demonstration with tools - we can definitely do more in depth videos in the future per your request, but there's no substitute for having the tools in your hand. You can do this! Thanks so much for the support and comments! It is much appreciated (and needed). XO Ana

    Hey! Thanks for providing these videos and the blueprints. I'm actually in the process of making my own, roughly based on your plan. I've got the sub-floor complete, and I'm in the process of framing. I have a question though. How did you secure the framing to the subfloor? Did you just nail it all in place?

  • @TheGregd81

    what did u end up getting for a first floor ceiling height and a loft height? does your trailer have 4 inch drop axles? I'm really wanting 7 feet in height for the first floor therefore allowing standard sized upper cabinets, sinking the cut down exterior door to 78" and flush sash, I just can't seem to get my head around a 42" loft. that's even with a four inch drop axle.

    Great video. Question: there is OSB and plywood. What made you choose for the more expensive plywood? Alaskan weather? And the sillseal, isn't that only used for isolating the wood from a concrete base? Thanks for replying and for a great start of the weekend. Until next time, bye

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Frits van Doorn That's a great question. OSB is fine for use, but we had an experience where it got wet and just fell apart. Ever since then we've spent the extra money on plywood. We do sill seal under all exterior walls, more for insulating and keeping drafts out than for moisture protection. Maybe it's a different product here in the US?

    • @FritsvanDoorn
      @FritsvanDoorn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ana White I do not know if it is a different product, because all my knowledge about framing comes from books and Dvd's I ordered in the US and from what I have learned on TH-cam. Maybe one day I become a Carpenter and can build framing myself. But then I must emmigrate to the US because here in the Netherlands there is not so much house framing. And that is why I really really like video's about framing. Thank you!

    • @meestro
      @meestro 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered the same about the sill seal...in standard housing it goes between the concrete subfloor and base stud for moisture control. A great use of the sill seal is between the trailer flange and the 3/4 tng ply.

  • @summerseday2633
    @summerseday2633 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of using the typical stud build technique what about composite material not sure if I am using correct terms but it is a plywood foam plywood pressed together which is supposedly very strong, uses less space and is energy efficient plus weighs less. Is this something that can be used? Thank you again for these videos.

      Hi! We just don't have a SIPS source here, but certainly, this design could be framed using that method.

  • @danav5
    @danav5 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I noticed that there aren't any diagonal beams to help keep the house staple when driving it. is there a reason? all the other tiny builds I have seen they have put diagonal piece of wood in to help support the structure from twisting and moving around when driving.

      The sheating on the outside of the entire building make it rigid, anchor bolting of sil plates, and overlapping head plates do the trick.

    How are the walls anchored down to the floor? I saw the floor video which you used large bolts to fasten it down, but won’t the walls take the most of any wind/movement on travel and need to be anchored well? Did you bolt them down to the trailer frame somehow as well or just nailed down to the floor joist?

  • @orelygarcia
    @orelygarcia 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been planing for 8x20 trailer for small shop but I was thinking of going all metal framing and metal outer siding. I haven't done any cost or weight comparison.
    Did you do any comparison as to metal vs wood? and if so how much of a materials price / weight difference was it? If you don't mind me asking.

  • @TessiaLewis1
    @TessiaLewis1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    when you build your header over the wheel well, do you just have it flush? Also, does that not cause a problem later, having your wall not follow the line of your floor joists? I hope that makes sense. I'm almost finished with my subfloor and I don't want to end up with gaps because I build over the wells.

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tessia Lewis hi! We do leave a gap over wheel well to spray foam between framing and wheel well. Our walls are all on outsides of framing fine, you can block more if you want to, we try and limit extra framing because it increases weight and decreases insulating.

    I am Framing on 24 inch centers as well for my 32 ft 5th wheel tinyhouse. I also will be doing staggered horizontal sheathing but with 7/16 osb instead of 1/2 plywood. I do have a question though. Do you think it would be a good idea to add blocking to the horizontal sheathing seams? Or do you think that is overkill?

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the big thing here is cross bracing for lateral support. We did spray foam and there was no issue, but if you do bats, think about adding cross bracing in the walls. The siding will cover your plywood sheathing seams.

    Looks good, but if this is going to be mobile wouldn't the glue and screw method give you more longevity in the structure? Even ring shank nails would allow more movement in your structure.

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jdace66 Hi, yes, we did do ring shank nails with glue. We also did quite a bit of screws as well. For our purposes, this tiny house will only be moved on occasion, but this is a great tip for those wanting to travel extensively with their tiny house.

  • @PJWolf35
    @PJWolf35 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something just occurred to me and would like to ask, if you could go back and change 1 thing in the design what would you change? because I just notices you has a huge potential chance for massive storage in the floors the space between the trailer itself (lined with 1in thick plywood) and the top of the trailer wheel arch. And thus in turn you can easily fix in a slide out steps from within this gap in the floor space for steps to your door. Just curious :)

    • @AnaWhiteDIY
      @AnaWhiteDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Peter OFlynn That is a great idea! We are planning kitchen cabinets over the wheel wells to cover them up, and a table on the opposite wheel well. That's what's so great about these tiny houses - you can mod them for your lifestyle! I love that.
      One thing I'd change is after the spray foam (will do more info on this once we get to it) the walls are very rigid. I honestly think we overframed and could have left out alot of the boards in the walls and minimized headers.

    • @PJWolf35
      @PJWolf35 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ana White Can't wait to see that episode with regards to the spray foam. I always say we think we know everything we needs to know but when it actually comes to the build itself, you're constantly evolving to suit your needs. Oh keep up the good work always enjoy your videos for inspiration and ideas :)
