You have been blessed! You have in your possession the Holy Grail for all us "stout" women: the size 48 dress pattern! Was it a dream? --- no, it IS real, it does exist! I got all misty seeing not only The Pattern Envelope, but also seeing your reaction as you held it and looked at it.

The tiny misses patterns are survival bias in praxis. Finding those all the time most defenitly mean they where the least used sizes. We don't find many surviving prints of bigger sizes exactly because they would be used until they disintegrate.

As a twenties fan who is *decidedly* not straight up and down in silhouette, my understanding is that women absolutely did continue to wear corsets, in order to get that columnar shape. (There were different names for them, and rubber was starting to be used, but some kind of shaping/support undergarment would have been necessary for curvy gals to wear those straight dresses well.)
When you make your twenties dress, give it a try with a sports bra and a spanx (I know, I know, but it does give a pretty close approximation without investing in period-appropriate underthings).
Husband says Superman dates to 1938 but it could be debated that the category did not exist yet. There still would have been caped comic heroes like Zorro, etc. in the thirties.

The reason the dress and the apron were in the pattern box is because she intended to use them as “patterns”. You can see both the dress and the apron were “well loved” she wanted to make them again. The beach coverup you are making is an old Martex sheet from the 70s. Enjoy the dusty journey into the past.

Not gonna lie, fell in love with Pictograf 2362 with a 38 bust... and quietly lusting after all the other 38's... please post a thing on a Community post, or something, when you post them up on your site.
You found the size 48 unicorn... go buy a lotto ticket while patting your head and rubbing your tum. The condition these are in is amazing. I was tearing up right with you.
The maternal Great Granny would draft her patterns off of the evening newspaper. So don't completely disregard those oddball pieces - they may add up to a spectacular something-or-other. Fun fact - pretty sure that's why none of the patterning survived her. Le sigh.

Fun video. Finding the size 48 was amazing. People generally weren't that much smaller back then compared to now.
I was surprised by all the size 36 busts. Most vintage patterns I see are a lot smaller. As a petite woman, when I shop for petites clothing secondhand, bust measurements tend to be too small or too big for me. Part of me suspects companies assume people around 5 feet have proportionately smaller chest measurements than women of average height. When I look at normal sizing, I tend to see a lot more options.

I had those sheets that you have on the mannequin behind you. I made a bed canopy for my young daughter who is now 46 years old! Still love that fabric!

I'm going to be honest; if you have nothing else to do with the surprise patterns, I think I would enjoy trying to make a suspected apron. Not sure if NZ customs would let that through though...

This is funny because yesterday (same day this was posted) I got a box of free vintage patterns and it was sort of a mystery box too 😂

I stumbled onto your video today. I liked your unboxing of the patterns. You gave me an idea to do a video of my great grandmothers pattern box with the patterns she would use to make herself and her grandchildren's clothes. This would have been in the 1930's, think feed sacks. She would go to town with great grandpa and pick out either chicken or flour sacks that appealed to her and then make the five cousins at that time all matching dresses. I will have to find pictures of the cousins with their dresses.

I suspect that both the apron and dress were kept as patterns to cut others by. I've done that many times.

Actually the best way to handle items like this is with clean, dry hands because if you put on gloves of any kind you can’t feel how much pressure you are putting on the already fragile paper.
