Rather than it being that your own ship is hanging out above you, from what I remember, it's more like: All Krill tech is organic and of limited intelligence, so they deploy fleets of ships to scout around pilotless. If a ship is in danger, it pings the nearest parasite (the wild eyeball armor everyone wears) and beams it and its wearer into the cockpit. That's why the ship changes each time. It really is cool the way this game meshes story with gameplay in such a natural manner.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the random ships has a story reason, basically while you're doing your missions on the planet, there's air battle happening above. The way the krill ships work is that they're set to automatic but when one comes into contact with enemies it will transport the nearest pilot so they can fly/fight
Awesome! This is one of my all-time favorite games that almost no one played. Nice to see it getting some exposure. Also, for anyone thinking about checking it out: The first shmup level can be a bit difficult, but it's a lot easier if you know that the ONLY thing that matters is survival. You don't get money or XP or anything for shooting down ships, so play conservatively and you'll get through easily.
@@Undeadspelldragon Yeah, but unfortunately it just didn't sell. As it turns out, the Venn diagram of action-RPGs fans and side-scrolling shmup fans doesn't have much overlap. :-/
@@jonahabenhaim1223 Yeah, the random encounter rate is a bit high. That's probably the biggest flaw in that game. That said, it's also how you get XP, and you ultimately unlock a TON of weapons and abilities for your ship, so they're still fun to play around with and try different loadouts. Plus by midway through the game, your ship is powerful enough that you can get through them quickly.
Thank you for these videos. I love having someone inform me on games that I may not have had the chance to play as a kid. You're voice over work is great and the content is exactly what I want in a review video. Keep it up! You're doing great work!
It also has different endings. Unfortunatelly, Namco owns the rights, so a secuel was never produced, eventhough the Game has a cult following and Wayforward was Up to It.
Ditto. And if Namco has the rights to Sigma Star Saga I don't see why Wayforward doesn't just make a spiritual successor AKA Sigma Star Saga 2 only renamed and with a new name, and visual traits for the Krill. It wouldn't be perfect but IMO it would be better then nothing.
@@roguerifter9724 It could definitely be done, but then you'd be into creating a new IP to make a spiritual sequel to a pretty offbeat, niche game. I'm not sure it's viable from a business perspective, especially when Wayforward can simply make more Shantae games instead.
SNESDrunk, I wanted to let you know... per your request I played Terranigma, and just beat it two days ago. It is easily one of the best SNES games that I have ever played, probably Top 10 material. Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect game, and I felt there was a number of missed opportunities, but it was a great story with a fantastic last boss, which I am always a huge fan of. Thanks for making the video about it.
Oh man, what a cool game, kinda forgot about it. I remember buying this when it came out back in the day just cause it looked cool and was not disappointed. I feel like it was super overlooked because it came out during the heyday of the DS. Awesome video, I hope you have a great rest of your day too bud
This is such an unheard of game. I only beat it the once years and years ago, but it left a lasting impression on me with how unique it was. I do remember being annoyed though, because sometimes you could get into a random battle and no enemies would show up, forcing you to either crash into walls (IIRC) or just reset the game, but outside of that I'd say it's worth a spin. It's always cool to see you review these games from the outer recesses of my gaming experiences.
Yeah, this one has always been on my GBA radar. I'm impressed with what it attempts to seamlessly encompass. I think this now has a place on the list of what I want to permanently own and play for the system. Great review, as always.
My primary memories of this game involved me picking it up for $5 from a Circuit City bargain bin, followed by at some later point, sitting in a bathroom stall at a local heritage center while playing it for 3 hours on my GameBoy Micro, waiting for someone to get done with an event at the facility, followed by a half hour of said person wandering around trying to find me since they had no idea where I went.
Sigma Star Saga is one of my absolute favorite games of all time, in my top 3 no doubt. Combining shmups and rpgs is a match made in heaven for me and also introduced me to wayforward as a developer.
Way Forward only makes two kinds of games: really unique takes on existing genres with original characters, or surprisingly good licensed games with other people's IP.
I like how random battle is actually explained. And I (the audience) understand why. The ships are actually sentient life forms, and they scout around the area to see if there's any danger. And if they sense it, they summon you (the pilot) to control, because the sentient ships don't have the necessary reflex to fight off complicated enemies. Imagine if you're the bear or the shark, and with your intelligence, you would be able to use their bodies so much more efficiently.
Just beat this game earlier this year. Had it not been for the endless loop glitch in Chapter 5 (in addition to a few significantly less important problems), I would have said Sigma Star Saga was an absolute gem for the GBA. As it stands, it's still a good game overall and worth picking up if you so happen to come across it at a retro game store or a pawn shop or something.
Oh man, I don’t know why TH-cam recommended this to me, but I love this game! It always seemed kinda cute that the ships would panic and beam you up to help them.
Wow this game looks real unique and interesting. Strange how I never heard of this game before. Seems like the type of thing I would have loved as a kid, back in the GBA's heyday
Amazing and underrated game that has some unique ideas. The hot space babe triangle drama and spy thriller story makes for something different. If you want the real ending you have to play through the game twice. I wish this game didn't fly under the radar. An indie spiritual successor perhaps?
I forgot where and when exactly but I was able to nab this game complete-in-box for relatively cheap at the time IIRC. Never finished it though. I should get back on it.
I remember people talking about it on GameFAQs' GBA forums many years ago. Looks like it should get a remaster. On that note, how is Mighty Switch Force?
Glad to see snesdrunk branch oit and review other sytems. So many good games out there but not to many good snes games that he hasn't already covered... Review number 510 damn
I remember playing this game! Yes, the beginning is bland but don't let that fool you! The story is great, the gameplay is solid and there are tons and tons of secrets and collectibles to find. I highly encourage anyone who likes an action RPG with a twist to check this out.
NEVER. CLICKED. FASTER. I use this game's awesome name as my tag in online games so this game and I have a close relationship. I loved this games wierd atmosphere and space environment more than the gameplay but the ship portions could be really fun. Thanks for using your amazing platform to bring some attention to my most favorite game in atmosphere and aesthetics. If someone ever recognizes my name due to your video I'll build a damn shrine to you.
I absolutely love this game. It introduced me to the wonders of WayForward. The main letdown is I'd rather less detailed smaller sprites to be able to see more of the area.
I am glad that I picked up this game along with Super Gunstar Heroes near the end of the GBA's lifespan. I was not completely sold on the DS yet (no Metroid game among other reasons) and I really wanted to do some more with my GBA player for the Gamecube (I have a GBA but I enjoyed playing games on the player much more) Not entirely sure if the Gameboy Advance was really the SNES 2 (it would really have needed some more control buttons for that) but it definitely continued the 16-bit era gaming for a while. Irritating that a lot of the better games for it are now so rare and expensive.
Cool video as usual. This is definitely a stand out title on the gba. You should give Ghouls and Ghosts on gba a try for the arranged mode. Take a look at Alpha 3 too, its the best fighter on the system imo. Kof ex 2 is pretty good tho .
Wow honestly most of the games you review i have played beaten or been on my radar, this one is out of left filed. and i soooo want to play it it looks right up my ally. Guardian Legend is one of my all time favorites so yep i need this one thanks drunk.

coming back to this video and i still think that the game area could use some zoom out. It's way too close now, but maybe there were certain reasons why it's like that :D
I really loved this game and it's a shame it didn't get a sequel. I enjoyed the nice story and great music in particular. It's got 4 possible endings as well but it's only possible to get two of them (including the best one) on a New Game Plus where you now get the chance to save a certain character via an extra item in Earth's base. The random ships thing could be a bit disconcerting especially if you get a large ship that doesn't fit with some passages, but amusingly end game you can end up randomly piloting one of the huge bosses that you fought before, and yes it's a blast even if it's brief. And later you get some equipment that helps you skip random battles if you spam it. Also a warning for a few bugs in one area - on the Forgotten Planet don't kill the tombstone enemies last or level up during the boss section or you'll be stuck in the level and be forced to reset. Plus don't stay on the left side of the screen during the spiky head mini-boss either.
Bruh I’ve been wondering what the name of this game was for YEARS! I saw it on X-Play years ago and thought it was so cool. Thanks for this video. Gonna buy a copy now :)

The sprite work in this game is really wild.
