This is the song/video that saved Band-Maid. They were ready to give it all up when this video went viral from Facebook post and the rest is history. Miku didn't even know how to play guitar in the first video, watch her closely. Kanami needed another guitar to expand her writing and playing so Miku stepped up and Kanami taught her to play.....today she is a great rhythm guitarist with her own signature Zemaitis "Flappy Pigeon" guitar.......Miku is my hero, what a hard worker she is. The first video Kanami is on her red Addictone guitar then the second is her PRS. "Manners" is my favorite simple straight four rock tune, I see you reacted to the LIVE version but the music video is wonderful. They just dropped a new tune last week called "Influencer"....it's a prog banger for sure.
And “Influencer” has a few controversial bars of straight Rap, so I’d be interested to hear Steve’s thoughts on Band-Maid incorporating rap in a song. 🤷🏻♂️🤔 And then, ofc, he’s gonna love the Misa feature in the song no doubt! 🔥😂✌🏼🎸🥁🎼🤘🏼
What’s very cool about this, Steve, is that the Management/Record company was going to only spend money on 1 Band-Maid video and we’re planning to do a different song; they’re first released single “Love, Passion, Matador” - a song with a Latin feel aka Santana type song. But it was the Band that insisted they spend the money on this Thrill video, which was the B-side. The Band didn’t know it at the time, but if this video didn’t get well-received, the band was going to be dropped. Miku and Saiki were going to be made a duo called “Dance-Maid”…yikes! As others said, this video blew up on a J-Rock Facebook post and the band was saved. Whew 😅 and the rest is history! Now the song live is a celebration 🎉
Nice reaction….as to the extra layer on the live performance that is Miku playing her guitar….in the original version she was mainly just holding the guitar as she did did not know how to play! In 8 years Miku has come a long way with the lessons given by Kanami and Miku’s hard work! thanks - Peace & Respect from 🇨🇦 NB: Miku was the original lead singer but gave up the role because she felt her voice was not powerful enough for the music she envisioned playing. Saiki join the band about a month later thru an audition process. Both shared the lead singing role on different songs.
The song that basically saved the band, then that same song brought into the present! First song from these amazing ladies I heard and sent me down the Pigeon hole, never to return!
I virtually never play this song. It used to be the only song can you imagine that? I've played it so many times. I used to play it several times every day. Favourite song now is FLYING HIGH.
Saiki sings, “I turn my earphones up. Nothing can beat the ecstasy of living with this Thrill.” And Miku sings, “A pigeon traces an arc in the shrunken sky.” No matter what song you're listening to, with Band-Maid the surprises and thrills ain't never gone. 🤘😉 Thx, Steve!
Their first and most important MV ever? Of course. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be seeing them in 30 days. Seeing the Awesome BAND-MAID will be AWESOME and FUN. And being with other Maidiacs will be Awesome and Fun. Peace. 21.6
this song is what got me into them almost 6 years ago and been my fav band almost from the since i heard them. I love the updated version, its darker and almost grungier and I like it. This is a drive song straight up for me. Put on this song after the interstate, hit the cruise control and drive. That and every other song is on that play list too! :P
They have a new instrumental that is fire. It is called From Now On and can be found in the Unleash Playlist on their channel. It is an audio only video
The extra layer you were talking about in the live version might be Miku. Back when they made the song Miku didn't know how to play guitar well, she just held one for the video. Kanami has since taught her to play and she plays some parts in this live version.
You liked it more than I expected, but yes, simple songs can be great songs and this an example. It might be that the reason they retained the simplicity live is Thrill's place in the history of the band: it went viral and prevented them from being disbanded by their management company. It's true that this live performance doesn't exude the same joy as the official live video to another simple early song, Freedom. The lack of a live audience is probably part of the reason for that.
Thrill was their first single released, and made me an instant maidiac! In the early days, “Thrill” was their best known song, and they played it constantly in small venues for several years. I like that it is a simpler, cleaner, more direct hard rocking song. The live version was very well played but, at first, seemed to lack some energy. I thought Akane’s drumming was a bit subdued at first Anyway, “Thrill” was the music video that generated a lot of buzz on TH-cam and got the Band Maid train rolling !
Welcome back to Band maid Steve Another great reaction.. Been watching your channel for a while now, and your "And GO!! " Gets me every time.. Ha Ha Love it. Be'st wishes
Thanks Grant! True story: the “and… go” is originally there just to help me know exactly when I press play on the song so I can line up the audio/video correctly when I layer it over my camera recording. But it’s just become a jolly part of how I do things now 😁
@@SteveOGRock It's your signature.. It's great.. Oh, and I would really like to see your take on a newish Japanese all female band called Hagane (Steel in Japanese) do the official mv of the song Super villan.. It's almost 7 minutes long, and it is all over the place in a very good way.. Hope you can get round to it. Best wishes as always
Still a banger. Kanami's head movements in Thrill always make me think of Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way. But she does it in her own sweet way. Nice reaction, as always.
That extra layer on the live version? That's Miku and that Zemaitis guitar, remember she couldn't yet play very well then Thrill was released. Needless to say she now adds so much to their sound. Major props to Miku for all that's been accomplished in 9 years.
@0:24 This 2014 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. At this point Miku couldn't play the guitar since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well due to exposure in foreign markets, that it was decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the financial wherewithal to get started. This is before MISA and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!
There was no audience for the live performance and their plans for a big concert in Japan got canceled because of COVID, so that probably didn't help their energy level. They did perk up later in the concert.
it was weird watching this without seeing the girls with their now signature instrument choices!! miku with her Zemaitis, kanami with her PRS, and MISA with her dark cloud and orange amp
I remember when i saw this back in 2015 it was not my thing :) Three years later i couldn't believe this was the same band lol. Now Band-Maid is the only band i listen to. No band on the planet doing what Band-Maid is doing !!
Gosh! I mean, they’re fantastic, but they’re the only band you listen to?! You could really benefit from expanding your horizon there. There is so much excellent music out there!
The video definitely lit their world on fire. Two million views in two weeks, they thought their account had been hacked. As to the live version their original label probably still owns the copyright, so they really don't have much say about how they can perform this song is my guess.
Could you check out the band "Poets of the Fall" and their music video "Carnival of Rust" They are a really underrated rock band from Finland and while the song isn't my personal favorite of theirs it is easily their biggest hit internationally and the music video was chosen as the best Finnish music video ever made!
You really need to check out 3 songs. Their first self written song. Alone. Only song on that album they wrote themself. Next album they wrote all their songs. Daydreaming. Fantastic ballad from them. I love this song. And their new instrumental. From now on. Fucking amazing song. Please. For your sake, do them all.
Like others have said, this is not a Kanami creation, but was written for the band. Important none the less, because it's the song that saved them. You were looking for recommendations. I'd love to recommend Moratorium, but it's not on the official channel and copyright gets dicey. Instead: - Wonderland - has been moving into my top tier lately. Took a long time for me to fall for it. It's a very different sound and structure. - Daydreaming - Alone - First song written entirely by them - Influencer - brand new and kicka** 2 favourites of mine have not received videos, but the audio is available from the official channel through album playlists. - Why Why Why in the Unseen World playlist - Corallium in the Sense playlist Both songs are crazily complex and take some abrupt turns. I can't get enough of either.
I totally agree. The old Thrill video is iconic. In a way it is perfect, cannot be improved. But, it is a simple song. But good! And the looks and the vibes of the video is outstanding. The new Thrill live one is so - so. Of course, the band sounds more full and more professional. But, they just perform it. They do not love it. I personally think they could make something great of it if they let lose and do not make a proper recreation, but let themselves improvise and play around. One thing to remember - it is not their song - they have not written it. Maybe changing it is not an option.
The lack of enthusiasm and complex new parts here it might response to the fact, that this song wasn't written by them, but for them, as every song in the early days untill the song called alone, that was the first self written song that the company allowed them to release (even that kanami create many songs back them but they didn't approve any of those before) . And also YOLO was their first MV where they allowed them to "do anything as they wanted to"
the extra layer might also be that Miku is actually playing rhythm on this instead of just holding a guitar? I think the only other major departure is Misa embelishes the end of the bass solo a bit.
The MV : -Miku didn't play guitar in the track. -The chorus have the "hey" part. The live version: -Obvious, Miku is playing guitar. -Misa change a bit the solo part.
Yeah they did this pretty straight forward for this online concert. Your actually better off finding fan cam.videos of their small club shows. Much more animated
To me Kanami has a dirtier tone on her PRS compared to the brighter and cleaner tone of her old Addictone, but maybe that's partly a result of live compared to studio.
I think it's only fair that you refer to the guitar player as Kanami and the drummer as Akane. The song and video did light the world on fire because without it, they almost disbanded as a group but instead they prevailed.
Can you pls react to the band called NOISEMAKER try their songs like NAME, APEX, MAJOR-MINOR, Spineless Black, THIS IS ME, and many other different songs by the band. And also try checking out the band SiM (SiLENCE iZ MiNE) to their songs like The Rumbling, Blah Blah Blah, Dance In The Dark, Fallen Idols, GUNSHOTS, RiOT, SAND CASTLE, Amy, CROWS, BULLY, GET iT OUT feat. Crossfaith, Devil in Your Heart, LION'S DEN, DiAMOND, MAKE ME DEAD!, WHO'S NEXT, CAPTAiN HOOK, PANDORA, A, KiLLiNG ME
Good lord, Kyros. That’s a lot of songs! I’ve done SiM “The Rumbling” I think. Search my channel videos for it. Not heard of Noisemaker before though. Thanks.
The simple story behind the first video is that their Platinum Passport company were not happy with the progress of the band, so with the last money in their budget wanted to release a MV for their first single. It' was going to be a pop rock song for the A side, but the band chose to do Thrill from the B side instead. A music station picked it up and decided to put the video on youtube and it worked, One million views a week for the first two weeks. Job done thank God. Misa was about to leave the band and the company were going to make a song and dance duo with Saiki and Miku. That would have left Kanami, Akane and possibly Misa to form another band which strangely was where they sort of first started before Band-Maid. Lastly, Just a thought- I also thought that the newer live version lacked a tiny bit of pace to be quite honest.
Yeah this one is just kinda mid for me. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I definitely feel like I’ve heard many variations of this same basic song before. And I was never really into BM before you urged me to come along for the journey with you. And since then, I’ve come to really enjoy a few of their songs. I’ve turned a bit of a corner and I can say I certainly like them more now than I did a few months ago. But this song just wasn’t it for me personally. I agreed with a lot of the points you made and I think you said it best. Still enjoyable though, and yet another good video from you as well, my guy!
Thank God not like the other 100 or so you tube reactors recently. You're not another one doing the new song Influencer. Love these 5 phenomenally talented beautiful musicians from Japan. But I've been disappointed by their last. I don't know 4/5/6 releases. They all sound to similar and chaotic to me. With the older stuff they mixed multiple genres not only on every record. But sometimes in a single song. The last I don't know number of releases. They all sound like anime soundtracks. Getting monotonous after a while. Although I still support these incredible women. I hope they revert back to the mix, styles and genres. That made me a fan to begin with roughly 4 years ago. Now of course I will be attacked by the Band Maid middle aged "Fanboy" club. Take care stay safe and be well always !
I think no one will attack you, because it's you're opinion (I hope they don't) and u talked with respect, so complaining or attack that it's been disrespectful. Now, I actually think that the songs from WD album are more old rock songs with some mix gender on them, but since UW album they become more progressive and complex on their song, Witch I love. But at the end I do enjoy both sides of them
I get where you are coming from even though I do enjoy the last couple of releases. But I started on my Band-Maid journey in beginning 2020, so Unseen World was already around. I also come from listening to a lot of extremer metal genres (black metal and such), so I enjoy that more frantic pace. That being said, I do agree that the last couple of releases sound somewhat similar. I don't think it's the speed or anything like that, I think it's Kanami's guitar sound (pedals) that she uses sound similar in all of these songs giving this shrill sound. Their early stuff sounds pop punk based to me and a little hard rock here and there, World Domination is more of a hard rock sound, Conqueror more pop and pop punk again with some hard rock thrown in. I think Unseen World also sounds more punk to me than hard rock mixed in with some progressive elements. It's more the way it is mixed and produced that makes it sound different to my ear. It sounds like more electronic layers are put on top, they had electronic layers in the past but usually put underneath and not that often. It's might be those layers and Kanami's guitar sound that might make it sound chaotic to you? I personally don't feel like the Unleash EP is that chaotic compared to things like Different (which I had to get used to) and Black Hole, but I already got used to their newer sound so it might be that. But you are certainly not the only one I have heard say this, I have seen other long time fans say the same thing. I don't see why anybody would attack someone for opinions as long as they are presented in a civilized manner, which you did. I honestly was hoping that Band-Maid would have at least put a different type of song on the EP for the fans who do feel like you do, but I guess Kanami really loves that new sound she has going. I still enjoy it quite a bit, but I do think it would have been nice for them to mix it up on at least one song. It does sound somewhat samey to me as well. That being said, I do think it's normal that reactors jump on the new thing since it will probably get the most views when a video just dropped. It also helps the band in getting out the word that there is a new album to buy, so it's a positive thing for Band-Maid as well.
The maids evolve, change the menu and the dishes. It's natural. Now they are in a phase, imho of course, where they challenge the status quo of some aspects of society, and even of their own music. A very artistic thing to do. I don't gobble everything they do without criticism. But I follow it with great admiration. That's my 2 cents.
No attacking from me, You are allowed to have your own opinion, and while I do enjoy their more current iteration of music, I too prefer much of their older style of writing. However if that was all they did, I think they would stagnate as a band. And stagnation is a sign of decay in my opinion. I'd much rather get 1 or 2 really banging songs mixed with several which I enjoy but maybe not as much as the others, than having them regurgitate the same old stuff without any innovation. I want these young ladies to be innovating well into the 2050's, and I just pray I'm still around to hear it.

Yup yup!
Cheers fella! 🤘🏻
