Absolutely. He was really talented, no doubt about that. However i'm little bit suprised to see Mercer landing so many left jabs, especially with Tim 's excellent defense. I can somehow understand why they give the fight to Ray even if i personnaly think Tim deserved the decision.

That's because Emmanuel Stewart trained Mercer for the Holyfield fight....he had Mercer drop a lot of weight and train for boxing speed to keep up with Holyfield....Mercer was weak and gassed and went down from a shot to the solar plexus...Stewart's fight plan was a joke....anyone knows there was no tougher chin in boxing than Mercer...he should have kept coming in eating punches like he always did until he could land...the way Bert Cooper did...he had Holyfield knocked out but Evander was saved with some nonsensical delay the same way Ali was saved against Henry Cooper....

I'm a big fan of "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon. "Terrible" Tim is a way underrated heavyweight. He is an excellent boxer with dynamite especially in his right hand "the straight right cross" He is a seasoned boxer with many tools at his ready. I am now going to watch this fight. Gooo Witherspoon!!!.
Witherspoon, Dokes, Mercer, Razor Ruddock, Buster Douglas, Tommy Morrison, Foreman, Holmes, Moorer, Oliver McCall etc. were considered second tier heavyweights in the 80s and 90s. Some young some old, some former champions others never won a belt. All were dangerous none the less and in today's heavyweight class would have an easy time with very few exceptions I think. There is a serious lack of these kind of legitimate contenders in today's heavyweight division.
Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Trever Berbick, Greg Page, James (Quick) Tillis, Mike Weaver, Mitch (Blood) Green, Tony Tubbs, James (Bonecrusher) Smith and even Michael Spinks gets an honorable mention even though he wasn't a true heavyweight. None of them were great, but they were good or at the very least dangerous opponents against anybody and some of them won championship fights. The heavyweight division is so watered down now and has been for so long. Only a couple guys at the very top are watchable in my opinion.

This one of those fights where the rounds were close, but the scorecards were deceptively wide to me. I had it 96 to 93. Mercer won more close rounds by forcing Witherspoon back and landing more jabs to set up his right cross and right uppercuts. A few rounds could have gone either way. Closer fight than the scorecards indicated. A couple of rounds looked just about even with Witherspoon winning early rounds and not being active enough late. Mercer turned it around by throwing and landing more jabs in the late rounds. He was also more active in the late rounds.
