These guys are the typical 80's heavyweights. Both these guys showed flashes of being very good fighters, like a lot of 80's heavyweights they were both hot and cold. Both gave very good accounts of themselves against Larry Holmes. Williams, in terms of how you build a heavyweight he is the prototype. Long, stout arms, but not muscle bound like AJ and to a lesser extent Wladimir. Witherspoon, though not as rangy as Williams, still had a good set of tools and an underrated defense. Witherspoon had a good chin, he got bum rushed by Smith in their second fight. Spoon had not warmed up properly and mentally didn't appear to be there and Smith jumped on him.
@@charleslowe522 Witherspoon wouldn't have beaten Tyson anyways but it would have been a damn good fight probably much better than the one Tyson had with smith which was a hugfest
Man, it's frustrating watching Tim Witherspoon. If he threw punches to the body, he'd do so much better. He just head hunts all night long, barely throwing 2 body shots per round. He fell in love with his own right hand. Thanks for the upload!
Absolutely! He had devastating power, if and when he threw punches; but so many times I recall watching him and screaming at the screen for him to "PUNCH Damnit!!" He probably could have knocked out Carl Williams, as well as Tony Tubbs - when they fought - if he had just let his hands go.
Williams 115-113. He was in better shape, and used the jab to control the fight after 6. Tim was out of shape and very lethargic. In both their primes, however, I think Tim wins by 3rd or 4th round kayo, As Carl then wouldn't be able to take a punch. His chin was much better for this fight.
@@Belburg True, William had very good jab, fast hands, not great power, fast foot but not great defensive skills, his chin wasn't bad but he couldn't block left hook.
Tim in no way beat holmes. he had holmes hurt a few times, which everyone thinks equates to him beating holmes. gave holmes his closest fight up to that point (apart from the norton fight which was definitely closer) but tim definitely did not beat holmes.
Williams was one if the most talented boxer of the 80s, he was a natural with real style and charisma , shame his punch resistant wasent so good but the trouble he have Holmes showed his talent in fact Larry was lucky to get the decision, such a shame he died at a young age as well
These guys would mop the floor with the heavyweights today. Except Fury. Guys back then were just so much more technically sound the the guys today. And much more determined. You didn't see alot of guys coming in to the ring looking fat and sloppy like you do now a days.
I think your giving fury credit for nothing, fury would be lucky to go a few rounds with any of the average heavyweights of that time , sineone like William's would have had him out in about 5 rounds max,
Easy win for Williams. He was really tight the first four, but once he got going, he dominated Witherspoon. It was one man beating up another, and them giving the decision to the one that was getting beaten up. I had it 9-3, but could easily see 8-4, some rounds were close. But I can't see giving the decision to Witherspoon, there's no way he won 7 rounds.
Very average heavyweight, Williams won that fight, Wetherspoon, right time , right place, Bruno dominated him, just a lapse of concentration, perhaps thats the fragility of boxing. Nobod will remember wethersppon in the hall of boxing legends.
Witherspoon is a 2time heavyweight champ who couldn't get a championship bout in the 90s because he was too dangerous. He lost 5 in a row at one point and still nobody considered him shot enough to put his name on their resume. What the heck are you talking about? You must be a casual boxing fan.
RIP Carl! very underrated,
Should of been world champion. I'm one of many that thought he got robbed against Larry Holmes. He out jabbed and outboxed Holmes in his prime

Never knew they fought! Battle of the guys who beat Holmes but didn't 😅
They both fought Larry much better than they fought each other.
Damn I forgot these guys fought! Thanks for the reminder.
I thought Williams pulled this fight out but it was really close. Good heavyweights Witherspoon and Williams, they both showed their skills here.

@@theinformationbomber7102 true, swarmer vs swarmer but Tyson was too fast, skilled and elusive for him.
@@Shovelhook damm true I agree
@@theinformationbomber7102Tyson vs Whiterspoon would ended in ko.
MY Scorecard: Witherspoon 115 Williams 114. Good fight. Two very good heavyweights that couldn't win the big one.
Love both these guys. Thanks a lot coach.

In the Mercer fight he threw to the body beautiful

Witherspoon more power punches but it was very close. Witherspoon seemed more motivated to land something heavy.
If Carl Williams boxed today he'd be eorld champion....EASY!
Thanks for the video
No he wouldn't lol
@ 37:43 .......... WILLIAMS hurt WITHERSPOON with a nice 1 - 2 punch combination
Both give Holmes a tough fight
Holmes was 34 and 35 years old respectively when he fought Witherspoon and Williams. Both were 25 when they fought him.
I always thought terrible Tim was underrated just as jimmy young was. This is when boxing was still fun to watch , not anymore
The Truth was a good boxer and an awesome jabber
Your right on that one. He could definitely box, and jab your ears off.
True, very good jabber!

He couldn't block left hook.
@Урош Раца No doubt. Shame Tim faded like he did after the title loss. In the right circumstances, The Truth may have been champ.

@@Shovelhook Yeah, if Truth's skills were a tad bit better, I think he could have possibly won a couple of more fights.
2 Men who beat LARRY HOLMES but were robbed of the decisions by the Judges .

I had Williams winning the fight!!

It's funny that both Witherspoon and Williams gave Holmes all he could handle!
The truth won that fight as he did with Larry Holmes, but it's a boxing mafia what to do.
I remember Williams giving Tommy Morrison a good fight. Even had him down a couple of times in the fifth round.
@@investegativereports3222 Williams was damn good but against big punchers like weaver and tyson he got knocked out in the 1st round
@@theinformationbomber7102 Yes Williams was an excellent classy boxer. Just wasn't very durable at all really, with big punchers.

No way did Tim win this fight! Williams clearly won!
Truth won this fight. .
Terrible Tim, was a fighter.
THAT REF SUCKED .NOT EVEN 5.9 .THEY NEEDED J NADDY OR HAZZARD FOR THESE GIANTS .
Eddie Cotton!
Is it me or does Carl look like Marlo from the wire older brother? Could be me.
WIlliams won

An average heavyweight who arguably beat Holmes?
