Bart, where i play in The Netherlands we have a 20 EURO cap at 2/4 EURO blinds and 5% rake.
What do you think of that rake and cap structure?
I can not step up there because that is the highest stake they offer and the same is true for the only other casino that is available to me in a range of 75 km.

I only play micro stakes online right now, but I have a rule of thumb that I play in stakes where I have between 30-40 buyins in my bankroll. Once I get above that, I will buyin to the next level of stakes occasionally. If I do well at those stakes, I will keep playing but if I lose say 5-10 buyins I will go back down to build the bankroll back up.

I've been beating my local $1-2, 1-3, and single $5 blind games for almost 2 decades now. It is an awful grind at times. I do like keeping my poker money separate because it prevents me from dipping into it. If I keep all my money together then I may spend too much to the point where I can't play if I have a downswing. I've learned this from personal experience. My advice as an amatuer is to do what works for you to accomplish the goals you want to reach. If your goal is to play in a higher stakes game and you have the money for a buy in then go for it. There is no reason to try to build up to your goal when you are already there.

What’s your advice on starting at 1-3 100bb max with a $4.5k bankroll plus a regular job on the side? Should I just play 2-5 and buy in for a shorter amount ? Or can I still make a profit at 1-3 and grind it out till I reach the higher stakes ? I want to take this poker thing a little bit more serious but haven’t come with a full decision yet. I’m more than willing to put the hours on the table and off.

    • @brianbasham3517
      @brianbasham3517 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@jeffreysaldana677 it really depends on where you are playing and what works for you. Game selection can be the most important decision. At my local poker room, the $1-3 game is so soft while the bigger stakes games can be very swingy depending on varience. I prefer the $1-$3 game for now because I don't have a bankroll to balance out the swings that the Big O and $2-5 games can bring. I would study the different games, and try to figure out where you can get the most profit. Make that game your goal and build up enough of a bankroll to where you can play it regularly. With 4.5K bankroll you have 9 buy ins at 2-5, assuming the 100bb cap. I would want about 10K bankroll before I played it regularly. You can probably take a shot at it right now for research to see how it is and how well your game fits.

Finally a video I can agree with 100%. If you have a full time job that allows you to have an entertainment budget, then 100% of that money can be in play.
Let's say you can afford to put $100 a paycheck aside each pay-period, cool. All you need is 2 buy-ins and you are good to go. Can you lose it? Sure but you have a job to start over with.
My BRM strategy is "I'm allowed to put $200 in my poker money every paycheck until I have $1,000 in it" (by means of deposits and winnings) at that point it is self-sustaining and I no longer add money from paycheck. If it grows over $10,000 I bank the excess funds into savings account.
Keep track all year long and pay taxes on the winnings only, I don't itemize just put the net winnings for the year into other income, done.

If you have a full time job and pay taxes at that job you've done enough my friend. Instead of paying taxes on gambling winnings, keep that money aside in cash and or chips, at some point in your poker career your KK will lose 5 straight all ins vs AK, QQ, AA etc and you'll need that money to replenish the roll and the IRS will not let you deduct that so do yourself a favor and don't give it away to them. If you gamble full time then yes you need to pay taxes on that but you're fine in your situation bro.

Have been playing and dealing for 20 years. Have never heard of a player with a payroll job paying taxes on their cash game winnings. Literally never. Also have literally never heard of a person getting "caught." How would that even happen? Casinos don't get or give win loss records for cash game players. How would anyone but you ever possibly know the amount you owe? Tournament scores over 5k profit are reported so you can't avoid that. But reporting cash is absolutely silly.

Is this actually true? I’ve been playing poker a long time and when I sit at a 1/3 table, whether Vegas or my local game, I’m normally the best player at the table. I rarely sit at a 2/5 table, but when I do, it seems like there really isn’t an edge for me. Everyone seems to have a decent general idea of what not to do and how not to be a fish. So I always rationalize just to stay at 1/3 because the players are so bad.
I easily have a bankroll for 2/5 and have enough money to take shots at 5/10 if I wanted even though I never have. I just can’t get it out of my head that 1/3 is such easy money with people punting all the time. So I’m just comfortable there I guess. I have started to play 2/5 a little more. But every table I sit at I’m always thinking “there’s way easier money at 1/3”

I've played thousands of hours of live 1/2, 1/3 and 2/5 and have never had more than a 5 buy-in downswing. I know it is definitely possible, but as long as you can replace your bankroll if you lose it and you are a winning player. If you can afford to take a chance at 2/5 you should because the rake is a much better deal. A 1/3 $500 cap is the min we should be playing because the rake is a killer at anything lower.

I think you just have to realize what they are doing and that it's actually great for you because it brings out a LOT of opportunity for you. Let them get pissed, just don't ever become a part of it! The fish will mostly always be there. Just remember that when they call it out cash out, you get out asap pretty much cuz they're pretty much where you make 90% of your money. I would just be careful with saying anything to or about the angry players, frustrating as they may be. Just seems like the fish are more likely to get scared off of there's controversy going on or a lot of drama. They don't wanna deal with that. They came to poker to have FUN and who knows, maybe hit some hands and make some money or maybe even be around for one of those huge jackpot hands!

I disagree with Bart about 1/2. I beat it for $20 an hour and have been for years. Now I am beating it for $30 an hour over many hours. When the 2/5 game sucks here because it is am OMC coffee fest I try and find a good 1/2 game. But there is a caveat.
#1 minimum stack average needs to be ~$150 but you have to have some that are $200-$300.
#2 no stupid $60 stacks because these shorties limit what you can do.
#3 you need to raise like it's at least a 1/3 game. The goal is to make sure you get 1 to 3 players at most.
#4 a rake structure. Mine is now $6+$2. And yes the jackpot hands count toward your winrate but don't impact it much
#5 you need to be at the top of your game.
#6 you need to know player behaviors
#7 table select and change if you have to
#8 you need recs willing to call these raises
    $20 an hour is possible at 1/2 $200, $30 an hour at 1/2 $300
This is the playbook. You need all these factors in your favor or 1/2 is unbeatable for any significant amount of money.
And I don't play like a nit either.

@@anhphan4030 That's awesome. I live in WA, and most cardrooms here have such an insane rake structure. They take a flat drop out of every pot and I believe it's 16% up to $50, so a max of $8 out of every pot. And then i think they automatically take $3/$4 out of every pot for a BBJP even if it doesn't go to a flop.

Jesse The Body Ventura plays 1/2? Interesting.
This call makes no sense. Hes built a 50k BR at 2/5 but is asking about a 1/3 BR. Anyway, if u have a job, it depends how often u want to play. Once or twice a week can play on a short roll because u can wait til ur paycheck. Almost everyday needs a bigger roll because u cant wait til ur paycheck.

Most bankroll rules you see online are GUIDELINES for people who want to minimize their risk of ruin -- i.e., avoid going broke. Typically you want this as small as reasonably possible if poker is your only (or at least primary) source of income. For most of us, this isn't the case. Therefore, your bankroll rules should be set to what you are comfortable with and reflects your lifestyle. If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck, you'll want to minimize your risk of ruin as much as possible. If you have a good amount of disposable income, however, you can comfortably take shots at higher stakes. This is all of course, assuming you are a winning player in the long run.

0-10k is basically the same thing in terms of roll. No risk, no reward. Or no gamble, no future, if you will.
I heard something along these lines once and it stuck with me... Most people get rich by taking large risk with small amounts of money. Rich people stay rich by taking small risk with large amounts of money.

Bart: For villain to be good here, he would've had to have limped Aces, and that's highly unlikely.

If this guy built a $50k bank roll playing $2/5 he already knows the answer to this question. There is very little difference between 1/2 and 2/3, there is a difference in play between 2/3 and 2/5. Just don't play in those games that don't allow you to buy in for at least 100bb because that's not real poker that's just all-in gambling.

Stop playing at shitty ass Stones. The match the stack at Capitol plays WAY bigger since people always have an obscene amount of chips.
