The drummer is Rick Allen. On the afternoon of December 31, 1984, Allen was involved in a car crash, with his then-girlfriend Miriam Barendsen, on the A57 road in the countryside a few miles west of Sheffield, United Kingdom. While trying to pass a red Alfa Romeo at a high speed, he lost control of his Corvette C4, which hit a dry stone wall and entered a field; his left arm was severed. Doctors initially reattached the arm but later amputated it because of infection. Despite losing his arm, Allen soon decided to continue playing drums with Def Leppard and adopted a specially designed electronic drum kit. The band took a hiatus from onstage performances until August 16, 1986, when Allen was able to return to live drumming at the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington. He has since re-adopted partially acoustic drum kits depending on the setting.
Yes, as others have said, Rick Allen lost his arm when he was already part of the band. You should read into that story--he lost his arm after he was part of the band for like six years. If I recall correctly, he severed his arm in a car crash and initially was thinking that his drumming days were over and told Def Leppard to look for a new drummer. They were having none of that, kept him on, and he was performing live with them again in a couple of years with a specially-designed electronic drum kit. I may be romanticizing the whole thing, but it seems like a great story of a band supporting a member through some very trying physical and emotional times, and refusing to give up on him or letting him give up on himself. Also, he joined Def Leppard when he had just turned 15.
Yes, Rick lost his arm in a bad car accident. They reattached it and when an infection set in he almost lost the other one too. An interview with Joe Elliott explains that as far as they were concerned he was their brother and they would leave it up to Rick where they would go afterwards. They were not going to cut him from the band. He was not about to stop drumming and had a kit specially made. They did a few small warm up shows in Ireland but Joe also talks about how Rick's big comeback was the Monsters of Rock festival in August when after the first set the crowd just exploded. Joe recalls the crowd reaction as frightening but Rick's comeback was that important for those of us who remember where we were exactly the moment we heard about the car crash.
Yep. Rick Allen's mother answered an ad for a band (Def Leppard) looking for a drummer. Rick became a member of the band at the age of 15 and was playing on the US tour at age 16, Sav (Rick Savage - bassist) was only 19 at the time too. Def Leppard was a very young band when they first made it.
Dude did you know that this drummer lost his right arm in an automobile accident and steel drums for the band using his left hand and his 2 feet? God bless him huh
I love this band, and one BIG reason is that when Rick lost his arm, Def Leppard was one of the ten biggest bands in the world. They could have probably had their pick of a new drummer...but they didn't. Rick was their Brother, so they waited for him to heal, and then hired tech to design a kit that would allow his left foot to do much of what his left arm used to do. Loyalty.
These guys still have ALL my respect. Waiting for him to recover and be able to play with them again instead of getting a new drummer. So much CLASS!! Says a lot about who they are. ❤❤🎉🎉
Rick Allen is the only 1 armed drummer in the world which makes his drumming so unique. To do what he does takes guts and determination. That to me is what makes Def Leppard the best band alive. I only wish I could hear their current music. Radios only play these songs from 30 years ago.

But just like they said with Rick if in the end they couldn't get him back on stage then then Def Leppard would no longer be because they were a team but a few short years later when Steve Clark a founding member of that band needed that kind of love and support it didn't come. And worse when that man lost his war with addiction they tried to replace him and the band sorta lived on . rick allen is the drummer and i dont think you noticed he has one arm, lost it in a car accident and the band stopped touring for an entire year to let rick recover and relearn drums with one arm because they didnt wanna kick him out or disband
Their first three albums came out in 1980, 1981, 1983. They were on tour for Pyromania until close to the end of 1984. He crashed his brand new Corvette on 12/31/1984, while in England during some "winding down time" after the tour, and the seatbelt took his left arm off. After taking time to relearn how to play drums, now with his left foot playing his left hand parts, they were able to release their next album, Hysteria, in 1987, and his first live show with one arm was Monsters of Rock, I believe. 1986 if I'm not mistaken
One of my late brothers favorite bands. He admired this band and drummer so much. This band waited a year for the drummer to heal after losing his arm in a car accident. One hell of a drummer and band.❤💋

I always thought that they got better after Rick Allen lost his arm and had to relearn how to play. The fact that the band didn’t just get a new drummer or implode after Allen’s injury is amazing. Their aren’t many bands that have that much integrity to stick by each other. How many times have bands broken up over stupid stuff and here’s a band that in the face of true tragedy stuck together. They were INCREDIBLE! Being grounded was worth it. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything. Gen-X baby!

Rick Allen "The Thunder God" on Drums. Lost his left arm in a car wreck afetr they had already hit it BIG. Somewhere between their 3 and fourth album. They waited for him to heal and figure a way through. He devised a way to use his left foot (with special pedals) to act as his left hand. Pretty incredible. Seen them live at least 10 times, more than half of those since losing his arm. I think he's even better one armed.
The concerts were fire. Saw them on tour for the album "Hysteria". Their stage was in the middle of the arena, and rotated as they played. FUN FACT: Def Leppard is the only band to ever play three shows on three different continents within a 24-hour period.
@@maryreilly5092 October 23, 1995: They played a show at the Hercules Cave in Tangiers, Morocco; they then flew to England for a show at the Bottom Line club in west London; then a long flight west before the final show at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, Canada.
I saw them on this tour. Rick Allen, the drummer, was right in front of me. Killed it. They have a new album Diamond Star Halos and a tour going too. Glad you liked this and thanks for listening! 💜
I still go to their concerts when they are in town. The last one I went to was at Lucas Oil Stadium and they still bring in the crowds. At the end of the concert, Rick Allen always comes out and you can tell by his face he just loves what he is doing, the ear-to-ear smiles show that. Loyalty is an amazing thing, glad they did not ditch him.
Consider this: You're the drummer of one of the biggest bands in the world. You lose your arm in a car wreck. You then proceed to use technology and pure will to use your left foot peddle to create your left arm's sound. You're in emotional trauma, and you push through to learn to drum from the start again essentially. And you come out smelling like roses. Whether you like the band, you have to give props to the determination that took.
NASA sent Def Leppard the beginnings of what would become the drum kit for Rick Allen. The band talked about it on a documentary about the Hysteria album. Steve Clark the long haired guitarist died from alcoholism, Phil Colin is the other guitarist, and Joe Elliot is the awesome vocalist.
Ummmm…. Always remember the 80s we’re about sex, drugs, and R&R. They ain’t talking about kisses! This band was 80s perfection. Five intense young stunning men, talented musically and vocally. Perfect recipe. Rick Allen is an incredible drummer. After losing his arm, he fitted the drum set with an extra pedal to replace the functions he did with that arm. Genius. Also…RIP Steve Clark. Super talented. Literally drank himself to death. Addiction is a wickedly tragic disease. 💔
"They ain’t talking about kisses!" Umm... Don't try to tell the Southeastern United States that. Pour some sugar on me has been a phrase for giving kisses since long before I was born. Even my great grandmother used to say it.

I went to Def leppard's adrenalized tour in 1994 in Dallas Texas. I've only been to a handful of concerts but we were center stage second row and they sounded better live than they do on the radio. When I'm 100 and don't remember my kid's names I will remember every second of that amazing concert
I always love watching Def Leppard reactions because I'm always waiting for that moment when the reactor gets a good look at Rick. You were so into the music you missed it. :-)
I saw Def Leopard 4 times live, Great Concert! Still remember singing Pour Some Sugar On Me while cruisin the ave, windows rolled down and radio turned UP on a HOT summer nights.
Hahaha!! Does that mean give me some kisses?? Umm... NOPE!! I guess it could (if your mind wasn't in the gutter) but that's not how I ever read it!! LOL!!! Anyway, I saw these guys in concert in '88 on their first tour back with Rick Allen (drums) after he lost his arm in the accident! They had a rotating stage (rotated 360 degrees) it was AWESOME!! As a VERY young teenager, the concert was incredible but seeing (live and up close) Rick playing those drums with only one arm was inspiring and uplifting!! GREAT reaction!!!
I saw them December 19, 1987, “In the Round” as well. Best concert I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen hundreds of shows in my old age. 🤣 I also remember being blown away by the lasers- drawing the album cover on the ceiling, etc… I’ve now seen them 4 times, and I’m thankful I got to see them with Steve Clark (RIP). 🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️
There are so many shots of the drummer and you did not once notice that he only had one arm and was drumming as well as any two armed drummer. Loved Def Leppard.
I kept waiting to see if he was going to notice the drummer had one arm, this isn't my favorite song by them, but it's good. Check out Animal, God's of War, and Hysteria, always respected Def Leppard for standing by him after the accident

I'm guessing this is the first time he discovered that Def leppard's drummer has one arm. They lost it like after their second album somewhere like around 1983 and they modified it so he can play some of the drums with a foot that used to be played with an arm

I didn't know that! Do you know which shows/places they were at in such a short time frame?
@@maryreilly5092 October 23, 1995: They played a show at the Hercules Cave in Tangiers, Morocco; they then flew to England for a show at the Bottom Line club in west London; then a long flight west before the final show at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, Canada.
@@philpennington826 Totally amazing! Thank you, Phil, very much!
This band is one of my top 5 favorites.
I saw them on this tour. Rick Allen, the drummer, was right in front of me. Killed it. They have a new album Diamond Star Halos and a tour going too. Glad you liked this and thanks for listening! 💜
The 80's had the BEST music and was the best decade to live in.
❤
Yep, that ain't the kind of sugar they're singing about.
Sadly his demons caught up to him.
Lol, thanks for addressing his innocent question lol.
@@Budini67 Its not the shuga. That my Mom always talked about giving the babies and children or that we give our adult loved ones on the cheek. 🤣🤣 I'm native southeastern grew up in the most rural in the country, small town you could possibly ever think of in North Carolina. 😁 My accent and shuga never left me no matter where I went. Lol
Was teenager in the '80s going to Def Leppard concerts was the absolute best
*POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME!* The chorus is catchy as hell
Just seen Def Leppard Motley Crue and Joan Jet in concert last night in Nashville and Def Leppard stoled the show and they sounded just like they did in the 80’s everyone should see this band in concert they were absolutely amazing
Oh yeah. It was a freakin' awesome show. I got to see them during this tour.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🔥🎸🎸🔥🔥🎸🔥🔥🔥
My favorite group, 4 times and they were FABULOUS
Pour some sugar on me!!! Wow oh wow that brings back good memories of carefree days. One of the best songs of that time..everyone knew that song 🎵 Great reaction!!!!! Yep one arm drummer, he was amazing!!
Still is amazing
I went to Def leppard's adrenalized tour in 1994 in Dallas Texas. I've only been to a handful of concerts but we were center stage second row and they sounded better live than they do on the radio. When I'm 100 and don't remember my kid's names I will remember every second of that amazing concert
I was playing air drums to Metallica one day, when one of the drum sticks went out the window. So.... I switched to Def Leppard.
I’ve seen def deppard several times and they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever heard. Along with Cheap Trick of course.
Single handedlythe best drummer lol. All jokes aside. Mad respect for Mr. Allen
This is the ONLY music act that I will see EVERY TIME they tour. I have seen them in concert at least 30 times. They are on tour
I always love watching Def Leppard reactions because I'm always waiting for that moment when the reactor gets a good look at Rick. You were so into the music you missed it. :-)
Def Leppard was one of THE BEST concerts I ever went to! The stage was in the middle, and that made the show that much better! They were so hot!
You really gotta love this drummer! He is the hardest working drummer in the business. He only has one arm and can play like someone with two!
I saw Def Leopard 4 times live, Great Concert! Still remember singing Pour Some Sugar On Me while cruisin the ave, windows rolled down and radio turned UP on a HOT summer nights.
How does anyone reacting to this video not notice that the drummer only has 1 arm?!?
Rick Allen is seriously amazing. The drum kit he uses will blow your mind.
Top-shelf move by the band to cease everything and wait on Rick to heal...and, for also keeping him as a member of the band. Just outstanding...
Saw Def Leppard live MANY times in the 80-90's. They are a GREAT live band!
I kept waiting to see if he was going to notice the drummer had one arm, this isn't my favorite song by them, but it's good. Check out Animal, God's of War, and Hysteria, always respected Def Leppard for standing by him after the accident
Gods of War is a BAD ASS tune!
These guys are the greatest arena rock band of all time for a reason.
You gotta c them live to get the full effect. It ROCKS!!Rick Allen is a damn good drummer with one arm.BADASS ALL DAY
I grew up in the 8os and there is nothing like rock music from then!!! especially live!!! best times ever!!
After Rick Allen lost his arm, the band waited for him till he was ready to come back!!! That's love!!!!🤘🤘🤘🎵🎼🎶🥁🎸🎧🥁🥁🥁
Also the band pay money for Rick's new, special drumms
Ive seen them twice!! The drummer is amazing. Not many can do what he does one armed!
It's amazing how many reactors never notice Rick is a one-armed drummer; he's that good and adapted fantastically!
It's also because the music videos don't put a lot of shots on Rick, especially not his armless side.
This video does
some do and I love seeing their faces when they realize it.
@@chernobyl68 the only reason I keep watching this video over and over. To see new people comment that they've never seen Def Leppard before... And then wait for it
Couldn't believe he never seemed to notice...smh.
I love their harmony they all sing. Staging great. They're so talented and great performers. 40 years later still performing. Awesome sauce 👌
Van, Van, Van! RICK ALLEN is the drummer, and I was waiting the whole time for you to notice he only had one arm in that video….. they show him many times…… 😭😭😭😭
The reaction when people notice him playing with one arm is for the first time is priceless. I’ve seen MANY reactions to this video, but the first time I’ve ever seen someone miss that…. 😭😭😭💔💔💔💔
I know - that's my favorite part about watching reactions to this song.
Great Band Great Concerts .Oh Memories I was in the crowd .
There's only one way to listen to Def Leppard - LOUD! :) They still tour; check out their website! I went to more Def Leppard concerts than any other rock band in the late 80s/early 90s; definitely my favorite from that era!
I’ve been to their concerts dozens of times! Miss this years because of Covid!😰. Go see ‘em, they play everywhere, every year. The Drummer is Rick Allen. He has only 1 arm! Best drummer, ever!
Good ol’ McNichols Arena. Lots of great memories there.
I love Def Leppard that is what got me into the 80s music was this song
Gen x, grew up on rock stars who had one arm, f that arm im still rockin 🙌
Def Leppard - let's get rocked! is a really great song. 😊 👍 And they have many more great songs. 😊
I'm guessing this is the first time he discovered that Def leppard's drummer has one arm. They lost it like after their second album somewhere like around 1983 and they modified it so he can play some of the drums with a foot that used to be played with an arm
You have no idea! They are tryly AMAZING IN CONCERT! I just got to see them in concert for the first time like 3 days ago. The drummer is Rick Allen. Def Leppard is the best rock band there is or ever will be.
Dude didn’t even notice the drummer was missing an arm 🤦♀️
A true testament to Rick's ability. I was hoping he would notice in his reaction though.
@@ChrisSmith-bz1gl I keep waiting but nothing. Kinda disappointing
It's even in the thumbnail!!!! Smh hahahahah
@@iceman590444 right? 🤦♀️
@@sweetkiss119 *WAIT A MINUTE!!! LOL I didn't notice anything because he played the drums so well. But my Patreons who were there Live with me, they couldn't wait to tell me the truth about the Drummer. It blew my F'in Mind!*
My friends dad was a roadie for Def Leppard back in the late 80s and he had told people that he had NEVER met such down to earth dedicated and loving and such respect for each other band he had ever had the pleasure to work with. I never met them though. Went to their concerts like crazy though and the shows were AWESOME!!!!
First time a reactor didn't notice the one arm drummer. Hahah
Try some of their older cuts like "Bringin' On The Heartache", or "Foolin"
Rock till you drop!!!!
And rock of ages. My favourite ❤
Went to see them several times and they put on a great show. Went to school the next day after a concert and couldn’t hear for two days from standing close to the speakers lol it was great
"This has all the makings of a dope-ass rock concert."
Trust me - it absolutely WAS a dope-ass rock concert.
My first concert I ever saw back in 1983 Las Vegas . Still a huge fan of every song. I liked your reactions to this song I hit the like button and subscribed would like to see more . 😀
The moment you realize the drummer has one arm. Priceless.
I didn't even see that he knew. Never commented on that
I know where was that at? I was waiting for it!
Except he didn't
But he didn’t notice it, if he did, he sure didn’t say anything.
yeah it gives me the chills too!!!! the drummer has one arm due to a car accident... one of the baddest drummer in the world and still kicking even now days!!!
In their movie hysteria they show the drummer losing his arm in a car accident he had while he was driving drunk and his name is Tony kenning
His name is actually Rick Allen! Tony Kenning was the original drummer but was only with Def Leppard for about a year!
Go back to sleep, Steve. lol ....Rick Allen is the one-armed drummer. Also, the guys in Def Leppard had zero input into that movie, so I wouldn't call it "their movie".
I saw them in 2015, on my 32nd birthday in Singapore. You have no idea how LONG I’ve waited to see them live, as kid who grew up in Asia.
Drove down with my friends and man that was the BEST birthday I ever had- my favourite song is Hysteria and When Love and Hate Collide. I was so happy. Joe was amazing on vocals. The whole band was amazing, I was so shook.
Rick Allen the amazing drummer; and the late Steve Clark on guitar with Mr Phil Collen (the terror twins!).
It really warms my heart, to see you getting into this song. Def Leppard is my All-Time Favorite Rock Band.
