Def Leppard is one of the GOAT but they weren't "Def Leppard" without Mutt Lange. He made this sound and the guys wrote amazing songs and performed amazingly.
Joe Elliott is the lead singer, Phil Collen is the lead guitarist, Rick Allen on drum kit, Rick Savage on bass and the late Steve Clark (long blond hair) on guitar. They're awesome in concert! Rick is right handed so playing the left drum beats for snare are what he now plays with his left foot instead.
In this video: the bassist is Rick Savage ("Sav"), guitars are Steve Clark, RIP, (long blond hair), Phil Collen (short hair), and of course you know Rick Allen 🔥 the drummer/Thunder God, and the 🔥 singer Joe Elliott . Def Leppard fan since 1984 here 🤘🏽 So happy you found them!
Rick’s accident taught me to always buckle up; it saved his life. He and his band-mates saved his career. We were just along for the ride, enjoying every musical minute.
Did you know that the band helped make a special drum set for the drummer so he can still be in the band after loosing his arm in a car accident? What a relief that was i bet.
There was a time when Def Leppard fell out of popularity. They played the Michigan State Fair. I thought they won't put on that great of a show playing a state fair. And I didn't think they could do the harmonies and sound like the recordings. I was so wrong!! They played their asses off and it was the same performance as if they were playing a giant stadium. And it was perfect, harmonies, guitar work, all of it! They played every hit and song they had. I was blown away! The following year they were back to playing big auditoriums.
Him and some guy in a suit walked into my music shop to buy guitar strings. I knew Joe. I didn't know the guy in the suit. I gave him the strings...no charge. He insisted on paying but I refused. An hour later, a Subway truck showed up in front of the music shop and handed out sandwiches for free. That was over 20 years ago. He's a class act and one hell of a human being.
After his accident 6 weeks later the band locked him away in a room with an electronic drum kit which allowed him to play left handed beats with his left foot. He practiced it for 8 hours a day to master it.
After the accident, Rick locked himself up with a drum tech and learned to play with his left foot. The band gave him all the time he needed. His comeback was Monsters of Rock 1986 at Donington UK! A year and 8 months after he lost his arm! ❤️🎼✌️
The album this song came off of had seven singles released off of it, six of which were top 20 hits, and they were already out on tour when this single was released. Even though this song was a single, it was never meant to be played in concert, and then it hit number one. Rock bands don't come across number one hits very often, so they had to add it to their live show. They had never performed the song together before the single was released, they had all just recorded their parts separately.
To be fair... the entire Hysteria album.. pretty much went #1 so finding a bad song on that album if you like the produced by Mutt Lange sound, kinda difficult.
Def Leppard is my favorite band. Joe Elliott, my favorite singer. I actually have "If you've got love in your sights, watch out...Love bites" on my arm.
The lead singer is Joe Elliot, on drums Rick Allen, on Bass Guitar Rick Savage, on lead guitar Phil Collen, on rhythm guitar Vivian Campbell(Vivian had to “replace” Steve Clark who died in 91 due to alcohol poisoning and he joined the band in 92) Def Leppard really seem like a brothers to me, they didn’t go around replacing each other just because, they really stuck together.
Def Leppard lineup 1982-1990: Joe Elliot - vocals Steve Clark - the long-haired guitarist, a tormented musical genius who passed in 1990 from depression-related alcohol abuse Phil Collen - the short-haired guitarist, and a more traditional speed freak metal-type player Rick "Sav" Savage - bass, the curly-haired guy, plays the dope bass lick here Rick Allen - Thunder God on drums Good question about Rick’s dominant hand. I’m not sure, but I would guess he was always right-handed - left-handed drummers usually have their drum kit set up in a mirrored configuration. (Except the freak Ringo Starr of The Beatles, who played left-handed on a right-hand kit).
I grew up with Def Leppard, took this album to Australia with me in '89 and met so many fans over there! I played this album to death! Great choice and critique! I love your humour!
Van…would love to show you all my 40 years of tix from seeing Def Leppard! Always one of the best shows still to this day! Going this summer Again..❤️❤️
Yup...the band waiting on Rick to heal, AND accommodating him until he could get back behind his drumkit, was one heluva top-shelf move. Kudos to em for that.
Imagine how the fans would have reacted if the band hadn't stood behind Rick after his accident? It would have been bad!! They are total badasses for hanging in with him!!! 🎵🎼🎶🎸🥁🎧🤘🤘🤘
This is my favourite song of all time. The vocals are a combination of Joe Elliot, the band and the producer Robert John 'Mutt' Lange. This song was written by Mutt. He brought it to the band, and his version sounded like a country song. But Def Leppard took it on and made it a definitive rock ballad.
Def Leppard are an English rock band formed in 1977 in Sheffield. Since 1992, the band has consisted of Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitars, backing vocals), and Vivian Campbell (guitars, backing vocals). Vivian Campbell replaced Steve Clark after he died. steve clark is the guitarist with the long blond hair in this video
This may be my favorite reaction of yours. You heard everything!! Lyrics, Bass, Joe's voice --- and you totally sang the heck outta the rhythm. You were having so much fun! 🎵✌❤
Relatively new fan here (mostly because you are a new Lep fan) anyway didn't want to go thru all the comments to see if you were answered so this may be a repeat, sorry. Yes, Rick was right handed but in the accident Rick almost lost both of his arms but luckily didn't. I watched a video of him at home he was cutting a tomato with his left foot so basically everything he did left handed he does with his left foot. A Boeing airplane mechanic made his first drum set. He saw an article on the guy in a magazine in the hospital and contacted him. He was supposed to be in hospital for 6 months but worked hard and got out in 6 weeks. A lot of credit for this goes to his brother who was with him 24/7 (he is now part of their management team). Just some history for you, sorry if you've already heard it. Oh and Sav (Rick Savage) is the great bass player you're referring to. R.I.P 'Steaming' Steve Clark-will always be my fav guitar player, very underrated!
Lead singer is Joe Elliot. You should check out them live at their best, try Def Leppard - Die Hard the Hunter live 1988 in the round, or Too Late for love live from the same concert or Stagefright from the same concert. Joe sounds incredible on these songs IMO.
Not sure if it was the dominant arm he lost, but actually lost his arm twice. After the accident the doctors were able to reattach it, but it got infected and they had to take it off again. Joe Elliot is the lead singer, Rick Savage on bass and Steve Clark and Phil Collin on guitars. Rick Allen is an inspiration, not only did he learn to play again, but he had his drum set customized so he could do so. He was only about 21 at the time of the accident. The real tragedy was Steve Clark's death in 1991.
He actually plays a lot with his feet. He has a special drum kit made up with pullys attached to foot pedals that simulate smacking the drum with a stick
In relation to what hand is dominant, I had to look through a few old videos of the band before I could see a clear shot of Rick playing. It shows him playing a right handed kit ie. the high hats were on the left, this suggests he`s right handed. The video in question was High and dry (a very early song), It also shows he used an orthodox grip (Traditional) on his sticks.
I always thought he was right handed as it prob would have taken longer to learn how to play with his new drum set if he was a lefty.odds are he would be right handed most are I know as a lefty growing up in a right handed world! I think drummers have to be ambidextorus to play well but thanks for the research and info.
In my opinion I don’t think it would have taken any longer if he had lost his right arm. All Rick did was transferred all the work his left arms was doing to his left leg. The left leg does the least amount of work of a traditional drummer, it basically worked the hi-hat pedal. I don’t think it would have been any harder for him to transfer right arm beats to left leg. Drummers brains are amazing at controlling each limb individually. He switched to electric kit because he could add as many pedals as needed & assign whatever drum sound he wanted to each pedal. Right hand drummers play cowbell with right arm. If he had lost his right arm he could have easily had a pedal programmed for cowbell & played with left leg. It’s a matter of muscle memory & he could have trained his left leg to do the work of right just as easy as he did his left.
Joe Elliott on lead vocals... Not the best live singer, but he's tall, charismatic... and ladies love him. The other members were: Rick Allen (drums), Rick 'Sav' Savage (bass), Phil Collen & (the late) Steve Clark (guitars)
Love Def leppard!!! My kids grew up listening to all my music from nap in the day and they Love it too! Def Leppard is definitely one of their faves. They love CCR, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Jr all the legends! I raised em right Jack!
Please read about Stephen Clark. He was so amazing! He wrote most of their songs before he died. They have been to Hell and back! Vivian Campbell replaced Stephen Clark. Viv had cancer and I think he may have taken treatments while on the road! Rick Savage suffered from Grave’s disease I think. He could not close his eyes even to sleep. Joe Elliot is the lead singer and has had some vocal issues in the last couple of years and the lead from Tesla has helped them out on tour. Years ago Jon Bon Jovi said he would not get into a limo with Joe Elliot. I am a die hard fan!!!!!!
rick uses a pedal setup to play the drums with his feet. he is truly a juggler. most drummers use 1 foot for base drum and one foot for the high hat symbol. Rick does base high hat and help substitute his missing arm with his feet. Originally he played traditional drums after the accident on it was an electronic drum setup. over the years his skill with 1 arm improved and he has developed a special drum setup that plays traditional ( non electronic) drums. he is an amazing talent
a couple years back they were in concert with KISS and they absolutely knocked it out of the park! Still sound as good as they did the first time I heard them...enjoy the ride with this band
Your right , they didn't ditch Rick when he lost his arm and because they didn't we've all been witness to a determined guy who showed us all a MIRACLE ! ! ! . . . 👍🎶☮️
Puedo ver este video o escucharlo una y otra vez y nunca voy a cansarme, sus voces, instrumentos, increible combinacion un conjunto que hacen de esta cancion un 🔥 es adictiva amo escucharla.. Def Leppard ❤ Rick Savage 🥰
Interesting side note, Rick Savage (Def Leppard's bassist) has a vocal range of 7 octaves (Joe Elliot, Def Leppard's lead singer, also can sing in 7 octaves [world record for most octaves is Tim Storm, with 10, look him up one of the octaves he sings in is so low it isn't in the range of human hearing]), which makes him a top 5% vocalist on the planet and yet, he chose to spend his life as a bassist and backing vocalist.
Apart from the emotive journey that draws you into this song full of unanswered questions and reprises; the arrangement, instrumentation and production on this song is a master class. Yes, it’s an old song; yet somehow it still sounds modern in some respect. It’s a timeless piece of music, taking the listener on the singer’s journey of sadness, suspicion, pain, anger and regret. The whole package is perfectly crafted to deliver and the sincerity of the song is felt by the listener. That’s why it is so good. It’s also what is lacking in music today that is not made by musicians. Def Leopard were famous for glam rock/metal. This song is a U-turn. I wish they had made more music like this. It reminds me of a more rock, even R&B version of the Eagles somehow.
The producer, "Mutt" Lange, brought the song to the sessions, and they worked it into what ended up on the album. He does a fair amount of the backing vocals too. And re: drums, they're actually programmed, both on this album and on Pyromania. Rick played the cymbals only. The producer wanted a very particular sound, and absolutely rigid timing. Of course live it's all Rick.
Van, rounding out the band for you, the lead singer is Joe Elliott. The bass guitar is Rick 'Sav' Savage. The 2 guitarists are Phil Collen and Steve 'The Riffmaster' Clark. Together, Phil and Steve were known as the Terror Twins! Rick 'Thunder God' Allen was right handed. He almost lost his right arm as well as it was severely broken and an infection had set in but doctors were able to save it!! However, there's no doubt in my mind that had he lost both arms, he'd still be drumming!! If he could make his left foot do what his left arm did, he'd have done it for the right as well!! The guy's amazing so is the band!! R.I.P. Steve
Hey congratulations on yr 23 years of yr lady, 😁😊 yea i knew this from my dad, he still blasts this song in his living room and he would tell me im inlove with yr mom 😂 but yeah awesome reaction bro!! New sub! Becuz why not 😎😎😎
Phil Collen used to party and get crazy drunk with Stephen Clark. They were known as the “Terror Twins”, and before Steve died Phil Cleaned himself up and I think he is a vegetarian. He is the guitarist that is built like a Mack truck!
If this COVID thing ever ends, they still tour. It’s costly to go to concerts now because their income can’t depend on “record sales” but a band like Def Leppard is an event, not just a concert. These guys are all so talented. They been through a lot together. They are family. RIP Steve Clark, on the guitar solo and lead songwriter. Still missed after 30 years, this past January. He was only 30, died of alcohol poisoning. In 2007, Steve Clark was ranked No. 11 on Classic Rock Magazine's "100 Wildest Guitar Heroes". In 2019, Steve Clark was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Def Leppard. 💔💔💔 We never forget our heroes.
Aw man when you check the song Hysteria then, its an incredible Spiritual experience!! I was lucky enough to atend to Defs concert in 2018, with my husband, our first concert together, PERFECT date omggg When Joe is about to finish the Hsyteria song he mends it with "Heroes" by the legend David Bowie!! I get this song was their inspiration for Hysteria! Hysteria best album btw But you want a freaky song from them, listen to "Let It Go" ;)
I saw Def Leopard live the summer of 2005 at City Stages, a music festival that took place for years in Birmingham, AL, and they sound just as good live as they do on studio recordings!🔥🔥🔥 I was a teen in the 80s and they are one of the badass bands that bring such a feeling of nostalgia whenever I hear them ❤❤❤
I saw this band at an opening to the Walmart in Raeford NC. It kinda broke my heart to see them there because that's a job for a band like loverboy or even kc and the sunshine band. I was happy to see how many people showed up. You had to park a couple miles away and walk. Still I left feeling a little sad
Def Leppard is one of the GOAT but they weren't "Def Leppard" without Mutt Lange. He made this sound and the guys wrote amazing songs and performed amazingly.
Their BEST song period.
RIP Steven Clark
The guitar soloist is Steve Clark... We all lost him in January 1991.
Joe Elliott is the lead singer, Phil Collen is the lead guitarist, Rick Allen on drum kit, Rick Savage on bass and the late Steve Clark (long blond hair) on guitar. They're awesome in concert! Tesla has a song that is a tribute to Steve Clark called Song and Emotion.
Sav also does the keyboards (now foot pedals)
Me too, huge fan since I seen in concert in 1983!!!
RIP Steve ... There us a document out there
Vivian Campbell joined the band after the death of Steve Clark.
Rick’s accident taught me to always buckle up; it saved his life.
He and his band-mates saved his career.
We were just along for the ride, enjoying every musical minute.
One of my faves! Seen them live, they are amazing! Joe still has a voice!
Each of them are singer song writers and they can play!!!! Can we say GOATS
Did you know that the band helped make a special drum set for the drummer so he can still be in the band after loosing his arm in a car accident? What a relief that was i bet.
I think you’d like “bringing’ on the heartbreak”. It’s an early song but still one of their best. In my opinion
It's celebrating 40 years this year
Good song !!
I agree, one of thier best
Agreed ✌
There was a time when Def Leppard fell out of popularity. They played the Michigan State Fair. I thought they won't put on that great of a show playing a state fair. @@MarvRoberts Your totally right Erin , HE IS ! ! . . . HE'S A BADASS SINGER with a HUGE ❤️ ! !
ROCK ON JOE . . WE'RE ALL LISTENING ! ! . . 👍🎶☮️🥰🤟
WAS. Saw them live 2 yrs ago...wish i hadnt. Waited 20 yrs too long to hear Joe. Understandably, his voice is shot
Still good too
This is my favourite def leppard song 🔥
The rabbit hole catalog of songs by this kick ass band is longggg.. enjoy 😉
After his accident 6 weeks later the band locked him away in a room with an electronic drum kit which allowed him to play left handed beats with his left foot. He practiced it for 8 hours a day to master it.
Joe was figuring it out hrs after he got word of the accident
After the accident, Rick locked himself up with a drum tech and learned to play with his left foot. The band gave him all the time he needed. His comeback was Monsters of Rock 1986 at Donington UK! A year and 8 months after he lost his arm! ❤️🎼✌️
That's amazing
The band didn't lock him up hahaha
Rick himself locked himself away until he was at the best he could be
The album this song came off of had seven singles released off of it, six of which were top 20 hits, and they were already out on tour when this single was released. Even though this song was a single, it was never meant to be played in concert, and then it hit number one. Back in the days when music was on a whole other level. Amazing
Takes me back to 8th grade. Never be a time like this again.
It is still amazing it gets better and better every year
What he would normally play with the arm he lost he uses his foot. So amazing!!
Since you love this kind of sound from them, you’ve got to listen to Hysteria. Probably my favorite Def Leppard song.
Totally agree ..can't get enough of that song
Have to add rocket to this list.
Yeah if you like this song then the whole catalogue is pretty appealing.
To be fair... the entire Hysteria album.. pretty much went #1 so finding a bad song on that album if you like the produced by Mutt Lange sound, kinda difficult.
Hysteria is my favorite song
Omg this song 5 years in a row. Summer concert on the lakefront.....My old man and I going on 42 years!!!! Our neiubours know it well!!
Vocals are incredible. They're all incredible. That's how you scream a love ballad. Beautiful.
Def Leppard is my favorite band. Joe Elliott, my favorite singer. I actually have "If you've got love in your sights, watch out...Love bites" on my arm.
This album is the 'Thriller" of rock albums. All killer, no filler.. practically every song on was a hit.
Def Leppard lineup 1982-1990:
Joe Elliot - vocals
Steve Clark - the long-haired guitarist, a tormented musical genius who passed in 1990 from depression-related alcohol abuse
Phil Collen - the short-haired guitarist, and a more traditional speed freak metal-type player
Rick "Sav" Savage - bass, the curly-haired guy, plays the dope bass lick here
Rick Allen - Thunder God on drums
Good question about Rick’s dominant hand. I’m not sure, but I would guess he was always right-handed - left-handed drummers usually have their drum kit set up in a mirrored configuration. (Except the freak Ringo Starr of The Beatles, who played left-handed on a right-hand kit).
Joe Elliott ROCKS!!!!💜💜🤘🤘 I can't even put into words how great their concerts were!!! Life changing!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
Bringing on the Heartbreak is a must 💔
My all time fave is 2 steps behind . Saw them with Foreigner & Styx
They did 2 steps behind acoustic!!
Absofreakinlutlyley
I love Def leopard they are best band ever since 1977

This is my favourite song of all time.

We had third row seats to Def Leppard back in the 1990s, AWESOME CONCERT!
I grew up with Def Leppard I come from that time And they’re one of my favorite bands love every damn song they’ve done but this is my favorite
This may be my favorite reaction of yours. You heard everything!! Lyrics, Bass, Joe's voice --- and you totally sang the heck outta the rhythm. You were having so much fun! 🎵✌❤

If you like this from Def Lep, you’ll also like:
Bringin on the Heartbreak (High & Dry album)
Hysteria (Hysteria album)
Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad is their best ballad IMHO.
hi and dry is a great album

Hysteria is their most beautiful love song. ❣️
You hit it! The precise reason why I LOVE Def Leppard. That and their music is just AWESOME! This one is my fave!
Van, you need to react to the songs "Women" and "Rocket" both from the 1987 album "Hysteria". Both have a Sci-Fi sound to them.
Thank you. Love rocket - especially the longer version
Woman!! And Hysteria!!

Yes, he was Right handed, and played using the traditional grip.
Lovin' ur interest in Def Leppard!!!👍🔥
Keep checking them out.
Def Leppard is the best live. Seen the 8 times since 1986
Love every song by def leppard, best band on planet earth 😁
I'm enjoying your Def Leppard reactions! You should check out their live concerts! They are still going strong after all these years!
Joe Elliott on lead vocals...
Not the best live singer, but he's tall, charismatic... and ladies love him.
The other members were: Rick Allen (drums), Rick 'Sav' Savage (bass), Phil Collen & (the late) Steve Clark (guitars)
One of the best reviews I have ever seen.
"ONE" OF THEIR BEST❣‼

Sexiest guitar riff I've ever heard in my life. I get feels every time I play this.
rick uses a pedal setup to play the drums with his feet. he is truly a juggler.
most drummers use 1 foot for base drum and one foot for the high hat symbol.
Rick does base high hat and help substitute his missing arm with his feet.
Originally he played traditional drums
after the accident on it was an electronic drum setup.
over the years his skill with 1 arm improved and he has developed a special drum setup that plays traditional ( non electronic) drums.
he is an amazing talent
Good question about Rick's dominant hand 👍 I'm curious now, and I've been a fan for 30 plus years lol
They had a hit album and refused to tour until he was ready. They wouldn't let him quit
a couple years back they were in concert with KISS and they absolutely knocked it out of the park! Still sound as good as they did the first time I heard them...enjoy the ride with this band
I was at that one it was remarkable they blew kiss off the stage
New sub! Thanks for giving Def Leppard ❤️ I’m a 70’s baby and grew up on MTV. One of my top favs is Billy’s Got A Gun
That Def Leppard song is straight fire bruh!
Imagine being a hormonal teenager with this album in the background of your life. Oh the memories...
That was me in the early 80’s. My boyfriend (husband) now and rocked to them and still do. We are 63 now 😂
I was sweet 16.
When Love and Hate Collide is a straight up Banger!!
That kind of loyalty is too rare these days.
You never get on my nerves! You are delightful!☮️💜
Hehehehehe, music guitar foreplay...Amazing song and Band...Love it, Thank you, Peace
One of my favorite songs by Def Leppard and especially off this album.
I would say I also try the title track Hysteria.
Your right , they didn't ditch Rick when he lost his arm and because they didn't we've all been witness to a determined guy who showed us all a MIRACLE ! ! ! . . . 👍🎶☮️
I absolutely love this band and I love your reaction ❤
Must be awesome to have two fantastic vocalists in a group
Joe Elliott had amazing vocals Def Leppard is in my all time top 2 favorite bands behind Stryper
I love when younger people hear the best of era of music! The 80’s are perfect! There are a bit of 90’s we’re great too!
My all time favorite band, and the lead singer is Joe Elliott.
they are amazing in concert. i saw them in 1996 at the nisson pavillion in manassas,va.
You may know this already that they had a special drum set made for Rick with more foot pedals. Thanks for the smiles!
Bringing on The Heartbreak is another phenomenal love ballot!🥰And Let’s get Rocked is super fun!
Great reaction, thanks for sharing. I will always think spittin' poetry when hearing this song.
One of the best concerts ever!!
R.I.P. Steve
This might be my favorite Def Leppard song
Bringin' On the Heartbreak from their phenominal first album, High and Dry, is the cream of the crop! The entire album is solid gold!!
We never forget our heroes.
This is such a great song and I love your reactions Van!
Aw man when you check the song Hysteria then, its an incredible Spiritual experience!!
I was lucky enough to atend to Defs concert in 2018, with my husband, our first concert together, PERFECT date omggg
When Joe is about to finish the Hsyteria song he mends it with "Heroes" by the legend David Bowie!! I get this song was their inspiration for Hysteria!
Hysteria best album btw
But you want a freaky song from them, listen to "Let It Go" ;)
Great reaction. This song definitely sticks in your head.😀👍❤️✌️🌼
My all time FAVORITE Def Leppard song🥰
I still get goosebumps everytime i listen too this song ! I love all their songs , but the Hysteria album ., I have too say is the best !
I saw Def Leopard live the summer of 2005 at City Stages, a music festival that took place for years in Birmingham, AL, and they sound just as good live as they do on studio recordings!🔥🔥🔥 I was a teen in the 80s and they are one of the badass bands that bring such a feeling of nostalgia whenever I hear them ❤❤❤
Got to do rocket by them now
This is a required watch for any Rick Allen fan : )
Steve Clark on guitar!! Epic. A song was written about Steve Clark after he died, it's by TESLA called SONG AND EMOTION! You would love it!!
I saw this band at an opening to the Walmart in Raeford NC. It kinda broke my heart to see them there because that's a job for a band like loverboy or even kc and the sunshine band. I was happy to see how many people showed up. You had to park a couple miles away and walk. Still I left feeling a little sad
Damn! That's crazy, because they sell out arenas all over the world still.
