I am sorry, but the announcements get obnoxious after a while, leave them out....you can hear them a little at times when the train conductor has his door open.
its a shame that the snow kept getting on the camera this exact weather/time of day made me fall in love with downtown & i miss it every day. i also loved going arund the loop when it's dark & stormy out & everythings lit up but especially cold winter nights when barely anyones out & just watching the city go by from the inside of the l or just even wandering chicago early morning/night in the snow before the sidewalks are cleared & u hear it crunch & the l is racing overhead & the lights around are glowing orange & the wind whipping thru the streets is bitter. i miss it all.
I was never in Chicago and I plan to do it at some point, I fell in love with the city without knowing it just to see the routes of the different lines, what a beautiful city Chicago is and covered with snow
Chicago winters have been incredibly mild in past few decades, and don’t get the NEasters that hit NY area. Places like Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis handle snow removal and storms much better. Though Chicago’s nickname of Windy City has nothing to do with the weather or atmospheric wind, there are times when strong winds in very cold hit you.
Meanwhile, it's the middle of Summer here in Australia and I'm watching videos of the L in snow as escapism. I would love to know what -20c feels like; that's -4F for you Americans. I can't even imagine what trying to drive must be like in that kind of weather. You'd need nerves of steel and some serious skills to get behind the wheel with that much snow on the road.
I spent two wintahs in Northern Maine running a USAF radar site. The mean temp for January was a cool -39 degrees (without the chill factor!). We had a 35 mile drive to the site early each morning, and NEVER missed a day of work, believe it or not! Having REAL snow removal equipment is the answer. You Aussies don't know what you've been missing!!
We've had a pretty rough winter (at this point it wasn't that bad, we got 21+ inches of snow one weekend), and with AWD on my car it wasn't too bad. I turned off traction control by accident once -- don't recommend doing that. Only the alleys (were the parking often is) were really bad since they don't get plowed by the city. Lots of cardboard, floor mats, sand and pushing to get cars out. Also: we got to -22F last winter. Come on down and visit in February sometime :P
Driving in a lot of snow is just something you get accustomed to after a while, especially if you're familiar with your car and can gauge how much traction is available. AWD and snow tires help tremendously, but they're luxuries I've never used in Michigan.
It rarely ever gets down to -4F/-20C here. Our climate is much further south than people realize. What makes it so "cold" for the latitude were at is the central planes of Canada allowing Arctic air to spew down all the way to the gulf of Mexico. This is why Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama get way more snow and cold spells than anywhere in Florida or Georgia, other mid Atlantic states as they have no natural barrier to the constant flow of cold Fronts. Same here in Chicago. (i.e., Texas winter storm crisis of last year) At the same time, our winters _and_ summers are moderated by the adiabatic latent heat sink of Lake Michigan. It is the size of a small sea, and warms Chicago up by anywhere from 10 to sometimes 20 degrees from the surrounding regions. The lake effect stretches out for a significant distance too. That said, our winters are between 20-30F in the dead of winter. When severe polar vortex fronts hit from Canada, only then do we see crazy temps like -4F, and I remember a few years ago we had a record breaking -18F. Whoever is saying -22 is referring to suburbs further out and further north, though still technically part of Chicagoland. We typically experience temperatures like that maybe 1-2, _maybe_ 3-4 nights a year. That was an incredible cold, and I hope to never experience that again. Trust me, 30F is more than cool enough to satisfy the midsummer heat woes. I am currently catching myself longing for winter as this last week we've had 95-100F almost every day and 100 percent humidity. I know though, that the minute winter hits, I'll be begging for summer heat to be back. As for the snow, it varies wildly from year to year and I suspect it cycles and is dependant on the El Nino / La Nina cycles. The "coldness" of our winters here vary wildly too, and I believe the same mechanics are at play that affect that. Note that warmer winters are actually more conducive to snow, and this past winter was no exception - it was much warmer than average and we got absolutely dumped on during the month of February. So yeah, PSA. Chicago is not a frozen tundra like people would have you think. It really annoys me when people say that despite real "winter" only lasting during January and February. People need to go to like Maine or Minnesota or something, or perhaps Winnipeg in Canada / Fairbanks Alaska to experience true cold. Ain't nothing noteworthy about our winters here. If I were to warn you about anything regarding Chicago's weather is the pretty much annual severe heat waves we get with triple digit temps and extreme humidity and the severe weather we get (tornadoes). Chicago's weather is pretty extreme in the sense that its range is incredible. It is a wonderful, world class city. I hope you make a trip to visit here some day. I myself have Australia on the bucket list of places to visit. Oh and one last thing, people who swear by AWD don't know how to drive. I make do with a FWD hatchback just fine, as do millions of others in the region.
Growing up in NYC next to the Long Island Railroad, these videos are wonderful for getting to sleep as well as for watching..I watched the last series which were great! Also I love the train running to with the snow at night it’s really cool and basically some stations are intact or levelled with the ground. Also I like at some points if just runs through sort of quiet neighbourhoods in the suburban sort of areas of Chicago.
Will the CTA ever consider making the Brown Line a 24-hour line, at least between Kimball and Belmont? (Same question for the Orange Line between Midway and Roosevelt and the resumption of the Purple Line north of Howard in Evanston.)
I really hope so for the brown line considering that it serves popular neighborhoods and is honestly better than the red line. For the purple line, probably not since there’s not much demand with it serving Evanston for most of the time.

Wow, just caught this wintah (a little Maniac accent there!) ride into Chitown, and it gives another even prettier view of the city at night. Super camera work guys, I'll watch this one many times!!
Brillant video, but please repost with a screen wiper. The snow on the window may be as it, is but, spoils what could have been a superb video. Folks love snow, enjoying the ride home after a days work or whatever. The glimpse into the homes, lit up, folks home and cosy , settling down for the evening. Won't be long till all the passengers get to their own. And the motorman. Makes this video, "a ride home to your loved ones ". Just my opinion, but I'm in the UK what do I know🤔. To all you folks out there that suffer these winters , safe trip home and God bless. MARK uk
I just love to watch these! You know what will be more interesting? If we can have those automated in train announcement added on these videos. In real time with station we can also listen train stations, doors closing, etc. CTA Connections is it something you can do it?
The beginning of the video says it's 1/21/21 at 5:30pm which was rush hour on a Thursday. The northbound trains and loop platforms should be jammed with commuters. It is snowing but by the looks of the alleys and parked cars there's not a lot of fresh snow. Having lived in Chicago, riding the el and buses for four years of school, it would take a lot more snow than that before businesses would consider closing early. I thought about reduced ridership due to Covid but if the numbers were as low as this video indicates, I doubt they'd have that many cars on the trains. It would just be more for them to clean and sanitize.
Using logic based on the fact that the Pandemic is still ongoing (as of 5/16/2022 as I'm writing this), there may be less riders because of the Pandemic and the snow, which would result in fewer travelers under normal circumstances. Thankfully in Chicago, the CTA never considered reducing train service as any time (unlike my hometown of New York City, which shockingly closed the entire subway system from May 2020 until June 2021).
Another great ride. Keep them coming, CTA. Especially the night rides. Btw, I haven't seen snow since I left NY almost 40 years ago. I'm really enjoying riding through this beautiful classic snowstorm in Chicago. Oh, no! What do I see dead ahead of me? Trump's Chicago building. With all the legal and financial trouble he's in right now, that name may be coming down real soon.
It was strictly a branding deal for Trump as were most of his 1990's/early 2000's named buildings. His company may have a piece of that Chicago building but if so, it's a minority share. The Press say the financing of that building is a small part of the ongoing inquiry into his finances and taxes.
Growing up, we had a good view of the Jarvis L Station from our living room windows. I miss the old days, when each train had both a motorman and a conductor. The train conductor would have some fun calling out the station names on the PA speakers. "Argyle" was always a good one. ;-)
Thank you for this. It reminds me very strongly why I retired to the Arizona high desert. It would be useful and interesting to have an inset in the video frame showing a map and a dot or line tracing the progress of the train.
15:56 Yeah, but too bad its gonna bankrupt the state to pay for it...just so brown-line northbound passengers (and southbound red-line passengers) can save 2 minutes.
@@michaelbrinkers1145 they wouldn’t do a project like that just for fun. According to the about page, the current junction capacity is 40-44 trains per hour. From data between 2008 to 2014, they project the need for around 60 trains per hour in 2030. Population increase causes a definite need for infrastructure improvement. According to the about page, they are getting funds from many places; however, to my knowledge, none of them are from the state of Illinois. Fantastic entertainment for me, thanks.
man this takes me back
Love street level running AND operations in snow!
WOW!! Look at that amazing view @ 5:44! Just wow!
Beautiful
I lived in Chicago for 2 years and I miss it terribly. I often rode CTA just for the sightseeing.
=MOSCOW'S METRO IN TERMS OF SIGHTSEEING IS THE WORST,ON CONTRARY...ALL UNDERGROUND
.............AUTHORITIES TRIED TO DO SOME RAISED SYSTEM LIKE BROWN LINE BUT THEY GOT ONLY SHORT MONORAIL WHICH TURNED INTO COMPLETE FAILURE AND SERVING ONLY FOR TOURIST PURPOSES
=BUT THEIR PLANES ABOUT RAISED SYSTEMS WERE PRETTY MUCH COLOSSAL......BUT FAILED BECAUSE OF MONORAIL ONLY COULD DO A 10MPH AND WAS COMPLETELY STUCK IN SOMEWHAT SNOW AT ALL
.........IF THEY'D DO A BROWN LIKE STYLE PROJECT,THEY'D HIT A HUGE SUCCESS,ON THE CONTRARY.....SINCE THERE'S JUST A LOT OF OPEN AREAS WHERE'S NO PROBLEM ABOUT BUILDING SOME BRIDGES
=OF COURSE THERE'S SOME TRAMS BUT THEY'RE DYING FAST.........TROLLEY'S DEAD...........BUSES ALSO DEAD.....ONLY SUBWAY WORKS NORMALLY
=ALSO THERE'S SOMEWHAT CALLED "CENTRAL DIAMETERS" WHICH SORT OF CHICAGO'S METRA,BUT WITH INTEGRATED BILLING SYSTEM WITH SUBWAY............BUT THEY'RE HITTING ENORMOUS NUMBER OF PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF IT'S ON JUST EXISTING OPEN SURFACE RAILROAD NETWORK........SAME ABOUT "CENTRAL RING"
..............LOTS OF BRIDGES ARE BEING CONSTRUCTED BUT ONLY FOR CARS........
=SO.................IF U WASNT IN MOSCOW AT WINTER,IT'S PRETTY MUCH OKAY SINCE IT IS ONLY ABOUT NERVES.......NOTHING TO SEE REALLY...............IT'S VERY NICE THAT CHICAGO'S L MOSTLY PROVIDING SOMEWHAT TO JUST LOOK AROUND
Cool, a new real-time ride video! Hope to see new vids of the other lines as well.
I love the 2700 kelvin streetlights at the beginning!
I love Chicago. I Love trains. I hate the cold. Sorry!
I love seeing the CTA trains and busses during winter ❤
Good old CTA keeping their trains running in bad weather
Omg so good and aesthetic. I hope there is also cab ride for different weathers and seasons. 😍
I assume the construction at 1:04:30 - 1:05:30 (just past Belmont) is a new track for the outbound Brown Line, so it doesn't have to cross all those tracks.
LOVE these. Want to move to Chicago.
Passear de metrô assim na neve é tão lindo! Maravilhoso!
I love the cta videos great job 😂😊
Like the video very much.Take care
Wow those house are so close to the track. I Am always so blown away by all the people in the world...
Wow, just caught this wintah (a little Maniac accent there!) ride into Chitown, and it gives another even prettier view of the city at night. Super camera work guys, I'll watch this one many times!!
I have never ridden on the brown line, would like to check it out next time I am in the city
MARK uk
kimball-bound fast zone will be more added between the Loop and belmont to include new loud moving noise.
Oh how I miss my Chicago
Great video! It reminds me of my trip to Chicago and riding the trains. I hope you have more coming soon.
Super widok, uwielbiam oglądać nowe miejsca ✌️✌️🤝😘
A u mnie spacer po mieście 😊☀️☀️☀️✌️✋
Pozdrawiam serdecznie z Warszawy Polska 🇵🇱😘
I just love to watch these! You know what will be more interesting? If we can have those automated in train announcement added on these videos. In real time with station we can also listen train stations, doors closing, etc. CTA Connections is it something you can do it?
I would love to ride the CTA just for fun. But Chicago is too big for first-timers to easily get lost.
All that snow seems to make it have a quiter run. Sounds good though.
@@jackmorrison7379 Trump really likes naming things after himself, that's for sure.
I dont think they read these, but I like watching them, I miss the train, dang quarantine
Loop-bound slow zone tracks we're removed between belmont and wellington in February, 2022.
I can't wait until I can move
I used to take L in seventies from WILSON in uptown To CERMAK Rd always got me 🆓 Sun-Times newspaper 📰
Growing up, we had a good view of the Jarvis L Station from our living room windows. I miss the old days, when each train had both a motorman and a conductor. The train conductor would have some fun calling out the station names on the PA speakers. "Argyle" was always a good one. ;-)
incredibly eerie but beautiful video.
Thank you for this. It reminds me very strongly why I retired to the Arizona high desert.
It would be useful and interesting to have an inset in the video frame showing a map and a dot or line tracing the progress of the train.
Very cool to see the overpass progress.
You can find the same information here:
www.transitchicago.com/rpm/about
@@abcrtzyn Thanks for the data. It's just that for the 40 years I"ve used the red line (north of Fullertion), ridership is so crowded, and movement so SLOW....and capital improvements, except for station remodeling, never goes to "operation". Track work is incessant. Orange line, blue line (extension to Ohare), Green line (new stations at Damen, McCormick Pl, Morgan)....nothing ever for the north branch of the Red Line!!!!! And the purple line express used to be non-stop from Mdse Mart to Howard. Every other line gets better except the north Red Line!!!!
Are there gonna be more of these for the other lines
New York City New Jersey Transit Philly & Chicago has the best subway train and railroad network in the whole entire United States
Hello everybody.
Please make new videos recent, in the rest of the lines and the recent news. I like to watch a lot and it's a shame that they don't always get involved. Good job for everyone in safety.
Por favor atualizem os vossos vídeos CTA's Ride the Rails, eu gosto muito de ver e para quem segue o canal como eu, gostava ver vídeos de 2021.
It’s like a party in my mouth and everyone is invited
Love it but would be better if we didn't have to keep fast forwarding so we didn't usve to watch through water/snow droplets
