Hi Eric thanks a lot for the video!! I have an 03 Navigator and it just started having a rough idle, hestitation and shuttering under acceleration today. It always did stutter around 50mph unless I gave it more gas but other then that the Navigator always ran great until today. This video just helped me locate the general problems without even getting to touch it yet. I will clean out the IAC, get a new throttle position sensor. Clean out my throttle body and Maf sensor and see if that fixes it. I know my way around an engine but I have never worked on this engine so this video just helped me a lot. Going to clean the IAC tomorrow and throttle body but the throttle position sensor will have to wait until I get paid.
Thanks a lot. I'll give it a shot to see what solves the issue. I Already cleaned the throttle body and MAS sensor; changed spark plugs, and cylinder number 8 coil and injector (including all o-rings from driver side when removing fuel line - no fuel leak).
I had a stalling problem and sometimes rough idling. I replaced the AIC and the throttle control sensor and my 2004 navi is purring like a kitten. I also got some throttle body cleaner and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body while I had it taken it. It was really nasty with a lot of built up deposits.

My 2005 navigator, went to a dealership for a diagnostic and they said i need a new engine. Because low oil pressure on cylinders 5 and 7. Has cam position sensor engine code and also running rich once in a while. The car has 194k miles the 5.4 triton v8
My lincoln navigator 2004 has trouble starting up and wont stay running unless you keep on the gas and even then...you have to get it warmed up before itll start and then it wont run on it's own nearly at all and ya cant even put it in gear without it shuttering off. I have a guy going over the wiring to everything but not sure where to go from there.
On the air intake what was the hose/pipe you removed? My lincoln navigator has the same. Hose/pipe and its broken and i am having a hard time finding one. Any help would be appreciated thank you.
Will this cause miss fires on different cylinders? Because i have a 2004 Lincoln Navigator and it is miss firing bad and wants to shut off at 2.5k and stall. i have replaced the battery, emissions sensor, camshaft sensor, and coil pack and sparkplug for cylinder8 because it was showing a constant misfire code for cylinder 8 now it’s showing multiple cylinder misfires

I am not totally clear on what you mean by it won't turn on? If the engine actually turns over then, that is one state, but if it will not crank at all, you need to start there by looking at First the starter, then the starter solenoid or start mechanism. If your key is stuck and you cannot move the key to start, then look at your interlock system. hope that helps. e
I have been having issues with my 2005 Lincoln Navigator. When I accelerate it starts to shake noticed it going uphill and now it does it on a straight road. Was thinking it was the fuel filter and replaced it and same issue. Then I replaced the fuel pump module and same issue. I'm getting the right psi on fuel. Dont know what else to do. No check engine light.

Not yet! Strange...no real symptoms on my 2006 Navigator, other than the CEL. No sputtering, stalling, etc. Different manifold covering the throttle body, so I'm trying to find a video or diagram of how to get that removed, then hopefully the rest is as easy as you show here!
Eric Kirkhuff Yep! I will note that starting in 2006, where there aren't throttle cables, it's all computerized through the valve positioning sensor- the idle air control valve is connected directly to the throttle body, and it doesn't appear that normal auto parts stores carry it as a separate and replaceable part. I ended up just replacing the throttle body, which came with new sensors, and it immediately ran like a champ. Thanks for your video- it's really what got me into looking into doing it myself and realizing that I could! Even though I spent $180 on a throttle body, it could have been much much more expensive taking it to a dealership!
Hi Eric, I have a 2004 Lincoln Navigator we recently change the battery and alternator couple months ago everything was working fine until recently our air compressor went out and we where trying to see what’s going on we disconnected the battery and when we turn it back on it started to do this jerking while in park and while I’m at a stop sign so I have to accelerate it a bit to stop it. Would this be the problem?
Did you have any obd codes come up before these repairs? Just trying to fix an issue. I have no codes but on the downshift 3 to 2 gear it is ruff. Smooth as anything on upshift. Have had transmission fluid and filter changed and new computer update and relearn.
gas should not matter. i use regular, you are wasting your money with premium, so a premium is just a high quality regular. I do not think that is your problem. Check your AIC, especially if it has over 60k miles on it.
Eric Kirkhuff I have a 2004 Lincoln navigator and it makes a humming sound some time the truck will be turned off too and it still makes the sound. I also wanted to know where would I put the transmission fluid in at? Thank you Eric Kirkhuff
The noise that you are hearing is your airbag generatot.. its perfectly normal to hear that sound. The air generator is simply pumping air into the air shocks.
wrong...... there is a ride height sensor on each wheel... there could be a malfunction.... also there is a check valve attached to each air strut assembly that is a common failure... its a cheap part... people replace their air suspension for struts like a bunch of dumbasses.... if i wanted an expedition I would have bought one. lol
I have a 03 Navigator and its making a humming noise when the car is coming to a stop then the noise will go away once we accelerate. What do you think this could be?
I have a 2002 Lincoln Navigator 5.4 Liter, I notice when starting which is rough to crank up RPM hovers around 800 -1100 back and forth. Would replacing the AIC potentially fix that?
1-12-2021 This is a New comment, all this will help your performance, but sometimes I have found that the Mass Air Flow Sensor is the culprit with it shuttering or 1/2 second stalls.
I have a 2008 Lincoln Nav. The rpm gauge moves back and fourth when accelerated. The engine power has some slow down during this time. Do you think this could be the part they maybe causing it?
I would buy them both, and replace the AIC and if it does not help, replace the other. Return the one that makes no difference, but it will go bad at some time and they are usually good for 50-75k or so, and it won't be a problem anymore.
I started the same way, replacing sensors. In the end, it was easier/cheaper to replace the whole throttle body, since starting in 2006 all those sensors are contained as part of it. Hopefully it's fixed with playing the sensor game- but you may consider replacing the throttle body if replacing sensors doesn't help.
Im having a problem with my 05 navigator...lately i have been havimg a no crank o start issue. Everything lites up on control panel but when u turn the key, nothing happens. When it does start it says Check advance track and now it says Check electronic throttle control?? I recently had a NEW motor inatalled, ever since then npthing but problems. I have been to SEVERAL shops but nobody can seem to find the problem! Oh and the check engine light is not on?? Weird huh??
What was your outcome, and I am sorry it took so long to reply. There are many things that are "interlocked" in the start process. Try the obvious one, the starter, then the shifter console.
Had the same thing on mine replaced the starter , fuel pump , new battery and it ended up being the key ignition problem and also had bad ground cables .... hope this helps
Hopefully you can help me so with my fuel rail pressure sensor unplugged the vehical runs great we allready replaced the sensor thinking it was the sensor when its plugged in it shutters and jolts worse at low speeds noise near back when it jolts we just replaced the fuel pump and module cause it wouldnt start but now this problem no one seems to have any ideas 2006 lincoln navigator
Try checking the air mass meter. I did not know that could affect that type of behavior and the only way you can troubleshoot it is to replace it and it is a cheap try when your running out of options. My Navi shakes or pulls really hard a few time when in idle at a red light or drive thru and goes back to regular. During this the headlights start to dim . It does this for 3 or 4 shakes or pulls most of the time at idle. It seems like its having breathing or something and just fixes itself by doingbthose hard pulls or shakes . The check engine light is not on. Is this solved with that AIC sensor you mentioned Eric? I need some help with this . Thank you .
No but it can. I have heard timing issues like it lost its mind but it has done that for years. Did your Navi go in for the head recall? If not, check into that also. Sounds like two different issues. Look for physical things, belts, pulleys, etc.
Eric Kirkhuff i rerplaced both parts motocraft and everything it ran great for few days but still has minor little misfires around 45mph. but changing the parts really reduced the severity of them... anyway i was just pulling in to a autozone yesterday and right when i slowed down to park , my 03 navigator started to idle very poorly. like a slow put put put put put, and it was shaking and everything ... turned it off to go inside and came back out and started it up and it was fine. im sure it will happen again in the future but i am wondering what causes my engine to idle poorly like that. even when i have the hood open and watch the engine with the 5.4l v8 lincoln cover off, i see the engine shake moderately ? any ideas? thanks -Vince

Another salesman posing as a helpful mechanic. I got my IAC valve motor from amazon for 29.00 and not any 120 and you surely don't buy anything at a dealership. Hesitation and stumbling idle is generally caused by air intake leaks in the intake assembly and that alters the MAF. And how do you figure replacing the MAF sensor as costing 3 or 400 dollars? Those are at parts stores for about 100 dollars
+Earl Guyton Hmmm Earl, I am not sure if your trying to help or just trying to flame my findings. I am not familiar with the Ford 2004 Navigator and Aviator Air Mass issues, but I am certain that what I found and what I did fix the issue. I am a full fledged DIYer and yes, I sell also, but dont we all have something to sell? Have a great day.
Smart people will always buy OEM aftermarket , except for those gotcha dealer ONLY items that are marked up 1000%. What a scam we make lousy part then generate repeat sales by having a captive customer market.
Well, I read all the comments about this type of issue, and most mechanics will fix the problem by shot-gunning 3 or 4 expensive parts on your behalf, not taking the parts back that DID NOT cause the issue. I am not sure why Kevin is so hot on making what I am telling you wrong, cause its not and it is something you can do yourself, and save 3 days in the shop and $800 worth of parts you do not need. Most of the people who write negative comments are not mechanics you want to deal with anyway. Clearly, I know about cars but not as much as him, and that is why I am a DIY'er helping others with a direction away from the Shop. The process of repair is one of car experience and good general troubleshooting skill, knowledge, and although I try not to defend the negative comments, I just had to on this one. I have been working on cars on and off for 30 some years with very little error and shotgunning. , I am helped by having a solid degree in electronics, which is a very real component of today's auto troubleshooting. Sometimes I save money by opening a component and fixing a board, less of that in recent years. An average daily mechanic does not thirst to know which part actually died, and, unless you are an actual seasoned Ford mechanic and work on Navigators every day, and I value those guys you will be in the dark with specific issues. They know way more then us because they are experienced, and see repeat problems, but won't tell you its a repeat problem. They and other Dealer mechanics are also trained to get the job done fast, time is money, (your money) so it gets fixed, and that can be the shot-gun and sometimes the experience method, telling you they have seen it before and it happens all the time. (rare) All of the items that failed in my car are real and really happened, and before repairing them. I always do my homework and see what others have found on the web, or I will call my friend at Ford and most of the time they will tell you to,... Try this part, or try that because they are really not sure. We as DIY'ers , sometimes have time on our hands or multiple cars, to be able to take a more experienced approach and the replacement of these parts fixed my problem. I believe I did not say anywhere that this would fix all shuttering problems, this was very unusual and it took some time to come to the conclusion that it was a common issue. I also learned what the idler variable Throttle controller might have a bad spot on it, which would confuse the computer. There also is a vacuum hose at the back top of the rocker arm assembly that after 75k or so can become brittle and make the car act very erratic. P.S. I buy some of many parts on after market sites and stores, and although the AIC is like $120 bucks at the dealership, I know I will not have that same problem probably for the rest of the life of the car instead of buying a knockoff that may fail in 10k mi. As for the MAF part is a very critical part and I just do not buy knockoffs when it comes to that type of close tolleranced item. Dealer was about $130.
bro just stop..... you may have a degree in electronics but you are a noob at fixing cars... I can fix boards too and I just rebuilt the engine in my 04 navi with a nice .50mm overbore.... i also went in with my scan tool and updated all the modules and removed the damn noise when I dont have my seatbelt on. there is alot more to fixing cars than just being a mechanic... I am a technician....
What were the Symptoms of your navigator why or how did you know that was the problem my navigator has been shutting off at stop lights or wanting to shut off
Been having some issues with mine (2006). Is it possible to email you what has been going on and what mechanics have done to TRY to resolve it? Thank you.@TheEpicAnalyst
This is so common, Navigators can be notorious for very unusual issues and some people have made great and helpful videos, to help others, or at least give them a direction. Let us know what was your issue and what did you finally find wrong. My guess is it caused you a small fortune.
Be advised that not all have this part. Mine has a throttle body as a whole... So I am looking at 200 to 400 for the part.... 5.4 lt 06 do not have a cable... just to let you people know this is not a fix-all for; for all Lincolns, 8l3z9e926c is the part from ford for mine. 2006 lincoln navigator limited edition. yes, they made a few of these....
I have a whirling sound from engine compartment. NOT POWER STEERING, but sounds like that when PS fluid gets low and wheel being turned. No check engine lights or rough idle. Running just fine...for now. Any help would be appreciated. I have a 24 sec video -- th-cam.com/video/6UsBO5aPWSA/w-d-xo.html.
Hello Eric. My navigator at the drive thru or any idle time really just starts to wanting to die . Pulls or shakes very hard a few times and lights start to dim and after about 3 or 4 hard pulls or shakes goes back to regular and does it again. It stops in park. Is this the AICV as you mentioned ? Thank you .
I am not a mechanic and could not see down in the engine where you were unplugging wires, and also some of your shots were out of camera view. This seems more for a novice, not a girl who has never looked at an engine before.:-(
oh my god.... please stop trying to help people when you dont know that the hell you are talking about. Trained technicians go to school and work on cars everyday. Firstly there an IAC is not an air intake control module... (wtf)... it is an Idle Air Control valve... all this does is adjust the air the engine gets when the throttle plates are closed ... at idle. also that is not a solenoid it is a stepper motor that is controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).... and you can hook up a good scanner and see the IAC counts ... from 1-255.... decel stalling and shuddering could be caused by a faulty MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor.... also 04-06 navigators have different engine.. 98-04 have a 5.4L 32v (4v per cylinder) and 05-onwards have a 5.4L 24v (3v per cylinder) these have different intakes manifolds, exhaust manifolds, heads, and a boat load of other differences. I respect that you are a do it yourself-er... but dont post videos talking about shit you dont know anything about because you are spreading misinformation to other people that are trying to fix their stuff on the cheap... we have a saying in the shop.. save $1 here spend $100 later because they didn't want to fix it right the first time.

I wish I had hair like this guy.....seriously.
The wrench symbol is on the dashboard of my 2006 navigator!!! What does that mean????

wrenches are used to work on cars......
your car is telling you it needs a wrench......AKA it needs to be fixed

I have a 03 Navigator and its making a humming noise when the car is coming to a stop then the noise will go away once we accelerate. What do you think this could be?
Likely your air compressor for your air ride ride system. I have an 04" and it sits on the right front behind headlight.
I changed my so far so good that's for the advice god bless u
my 2007lincoln navigator has a clicking sound in the engine area
So does mine. It clicks when I start it and sometimes when I'm driving around. I can hear it coming through the front ac vents in the center console.
Getting a random (at all speeds) shuttering while driving. 2005 Lincoln Navigator with 116k miles. Think this is the problem?
Will this help a slow acceleration? Like not a spot slower then it’s supposed to
I have a 2008 Lincoln Nav.
Awesome Thank you for your help!!
How I fits a misfire cylinder 8 and a Lincoln aviator 05
Im having a problem with my 05 navigator...lately i have been havimg a no crank
o start issue.
Thank you .
Mine(2006), did that abd it was my alternator.
I am sorry that I have never had keypad issues, but others may and they are encouraged to comment.
I have an 05 Aviator....will this be the same process to fix? I cant find the AIC at Autozones website.
Sorry to write you so late, yeah right, 3 years later, maybe your reply can help others.
I put on a new tps an IAC but still stall and is now pushing gas in my intake manifold
Do u need to adjust the tps and IAC
I have no codes, only when I get to certain speeds I get some shuddering. Does that need both the TPS and IAC or what?
Eric Slaton I have the same issue right now. Did you find the root of the problem causing the stutters with no codes?
All you have to do is just spraying clean them out I been working on Lincoln's for about 32 years when they though a code is went there no good
sir this is when the rpm get bull back for a sec for little moments?
No but it can. I have heard timing issues like it lost its mind but it has done that for years. Did your Navi go in for the head recall? If not, check into that also. Sounds like two different issues.
Look for physical things, belts, pulleys, etc.

i rerplaced both parts motocraft and everything it ran great for few days but still has minor little misfires around 45mph. but changing the parts really reduced the severity of them... anyway i was just pulling in to a autozone yesterday and right when i slowed down to park , my 03 navigator started to idle very poorly. like a slow put put put put put, and it was shaking and everything ... turned it off to go inside and came back out and started it up and it was fine. im sure it will happen again in the future but i am wondering what causes my engine to idle poorly like that. even when i have the hood open and watch the engine with the 5.4l v8 lincoln cover off, i see the engine shake moderately ? any ideas? thanks

Eric, could you possibly post those part# ?......Thanks
Sorry i never did. Any dealer will give you the part number. There is only one AIC and MAF
Will this work on a 03 navi??

I am sorry but I cannot understand what your specific symptoms you have,
Did your navi make a wierd noise then the rmps went down
Well, I read all the comments about this type of issue, and most mechanics will fix the problem by shot-gunning 3 or 4 expensive parts on your behalf, not taking the parts back that DID NOT cause the issue.
(rare)
All of the items that failed in my car are real and really happened, and before repairing them.

This is so common, Navigators can be notorious for very unusual issues and some people have made great and helpful videos, to help others, or at least give them a direction. Let us know what was your issue and what did you finally find wrong. My guess is it caused you a small fortune.
I have a 2000 Navigator, would these steps be the same?

Hey Eric my navigator does the same thing .. But does this issues makes ur muffler sound funny? Are is it another issue
Be advised that not all have this part. Mine has a throttle body as a whole... Beatwize6 Word up😂😂...I was just about to text something
sorry, i have a full time job doing other things, this was made for you to learn and start a conversation. Sorry I cannot be part of that very often.
I believe its ( IAC )
oh my god.... please stop trying to help people when you dont know that the hell you are talking about.
