Mark Holcomb of Periphery on JamUp and BIAS by Positive Grid

- Here's a short clip of me jamming through a couple riffs using a custom amp in BIAS, and running through several features in JamUp. The song list is:
1. Pale Aura
2. an untitled demo (which may or may not be used for Periphery)
3. Immaterial
Since I keep my Fractal AxeFx-II racked up in our touring rig when we're at home, my home jamming rig has been condensed to just an iPad and a powered cab. Not only are the tones as good as any other piece of gear I own but the portability of having both Positive Grid apps on iOS makes it ideal for travel.

total riff guru. so good!
you a really good to)
you are a riff guru too...! You have inspired me so much..listening to cloudburst.
cheers\m/
thanks dude :)
Plini you should totally have a solo in a periphery song !
+Plini. I believe that's why Periphery will one day be considered one of the classic bands cause, Riff City.
That fuckin' right hand man..I swear..
Its like hovering in some other dimension xD
8 years have passed…
But i'm still here for the riff at 2:13
same here
Same!
Same brother
That riff has a sperate fan base
@@tanujcherian3911 right? 😂 I have hope it’ll be on P5, look how long they’ve been teasing the wildfire riffs
5 years later and i still come back to listen to 2:13
Same here!!
What song is it??

Its a crime that, 10 years later, the riff at 2:13 hasn't been used
still mad that 9 years later the "BIAS riff" still hasn't been used. it's literally the best riff i've ever heard
The riff at 2:11 INCREDIBLE
Can we start some sort of 2:13 riff petition to get this filled out into a full song. This piece of music has more emotion coming from it than most bands have over the space of ten albums. It can’t be sidelined to a ten second clip in a TH-cam advert. I won’t have it!
Was really hoping to see it get fleshed out in P4...but P5's on the way now so fingers crossed 🤞
@@wasianwonderer I think Misha said in one of his old livestreams that he also wants it to be on P5
@@jooo2328 unfortunately it has not made it as you probably already know
@@gilernt :')
@@gilernt at least we got the Wax Wings riff, I still have hopes for this riff because of it.
The only way I can describe Mark's playing is euphoric. The way I feel hearing what he plays is unlike anything else, I can just feel all kinds of emotions running through me!
+Corey Ballenger Ugh I know, nearly shed tears on that second song. So anthemic, yet so complex. I think my teen years flashed before my eyes.
Mark's riffs have always pushed all the right buttons for me. Perfect mix of rich melancholic harmonies and powerful, agressive riffs. To my ears there's a certain emotional depth to his sound that I rarely hear in guitarists. He's such a goosebump generator.
Mark is just amazing. He really takes periphery to a new level
Damn right! It's not "Misha's bedroom wonders" anymore haha
Aaron Wright Yeah, the whole band contributes so much more now. Mark and Jake always contribute some of the amazing shit though
2:13 It reminds me of childhood, so nostalgic. I love.
mark's style is just impeccable.
That second unnamed song better be used in future Periphery or Haunted Shores work, its fucking beautiful.
sorry, didn't make the cut for Juggernaut :)
Then I presume that everything on Juggernaut is better? High hopes now man ;)
Can you please still release it on soundcloud at some point? You can just tease us like that then say it's not coming out :(
Bulb said it'll be in a future Periphery release, that it didn't have the right vibe for Juggernaut. So there's hope!
***** NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Are you talking about 2:11?
4 years later and I still cant stop watching this ❤💙💜🧡💛💚
I am impressed - he has something - not only technique - but a wonderful stile!
One of my idols. Period.
Almost 6 years after and I keep breaking down and re-studying these riffs from time to time. As Plini said, not only Riff Guru, but also timeless

2023 still here for riff at 2:13
2024 and still no answer
playing this makes me want to pick up my guitar and put it away at the same time...
littleredguitars2 lol the expression in your profile pic is exactly what I expect you look like during this confusion lol
Mark, you're a genius man.... May Periphery be around for a very long time...
Probably the best jamup/BIAS demo on the internet
2:12 - 2:39 That's the most beautiful song I've ever heard....
Such a tight player.
Oh my that pinch at 2:52 ...
Mad respect for sporting that Glass Cloud shirt
I've watched this video a hundred times just for the riff at 2:15
Mark writes some of the best riffs of all time. Hands down.
Those Pale Aura riffs are so badass.
Wow the second song is just........ O_o ! Use it for sure.
That riff at 2:13 is just epic!
Reminds me a lot of Mile Zero, just the general flow and some note choices.
Mark said it didn't make the cut for Juggernaut in a recent comment :(
I know, Misha said it as well. But Misha also said that he really likes the riff and that it will probably be on some other Periphery release in the future. :)
UGH THAT RIF IS AN ORGASM I NEED IT IN PERIPHERY THINNNGGGSSSS
Mark, the "Untitled Demo" at 2:18 is one of the most interesting, grooviest and beautiful progressions and riffs I've heard you write, so I seriously hope you use it for something. Until this video, ironically enough, I had no idea that one of the main things I've loved about Periphery and Haunted Shores so much was YOUR compositional voice. Stay fierce buddy.
Another Periphery album.
Another BIAS riff-less release.
Thought for sure it would be in Thanks Nobuo. We'll get 'em next time.
Man. Learning your riffs just keeps expanding my musical horizon.
he's such a cool riff writer
Briefly met you when you guys were in London. Thank you for being the nice metal guy :)
Will never get sick of Mark's playing!
fuck yeah bro!
What's the song playing in the background from 1:13 to 2:13?
The quality of the tones you get out of this thing are unbelievable
The most beautiful technical riff I have ever heard!
I could watch this dude play for hours.
These riffs are contagious
11 years later and I'm still waiting for 2:13 to be in a Periphery song.
Man, I love the way you create your music, thanks for spreading your beautiful melodies and incredible riffs, the world needs it! from a Brazilian fan!
Love the riffing style as always man, very unique!
I'm so pumped for the new material!
that song in the back when he's talking. amazing !! 1:14
My the Man - Haunted Shores.
yah i kinda figured it out :-P. thanks
Hands down one of the best guitarist of our time. BET! Just too good!!
I love Mark. He's so pro. Proper muso. Humble as, slays most other musos. Kudos
I love your playing so much Mark! I'm gonna try see periphery on tour! Rock on man! :-) \m/
I pray for a day where Mark and John Browne of monuments write/release a song together, I can't imagine the epicness that would be.
two of the coolest riffiest riffs ever written by mrak :)
You play guitar and my brain melts.
Seriously awesome
The finish n that headstock is beautiful!
Mark, your writing blows my mind.
That technique though...you make it look so easy! I tense up too much. What an inspiration indeed :)
My god that riff on the untitled demo, OH MY GODDDDD!!!
Hope that demo makes the cut! Awesome.
what kind of interface does he use to plug in the guitar cable to the ipad??
nice shirt! and always a pleasure hearing your skills.
This is really amazing and it sounds like I'm in heaven. Awesome
Your playing never ceases to amaze me Mark. :3
Awesome stuff man. All of you in Periphery have immense talent. Most bands usually only have one or two powerhouse players, but you all bring amazing skill and it really shows. Chris Broderick was absolutely right when he said you guys created an album well beyond your years. There are bands that have been out much much longer and have more experience yet cannot touch your stuff. Please keep it coming!
Your awesome Mark!!!! Definitely one of my favorite guitarists!
2:13 is one of the best riffs of all time. I'm deadly serious.

@@leons.kennedy8885 almost kinda slightly close to accurate, also almost kinda slightly close to funny. If you're gonna make the 0 joke pick a good riff to do it on dude haha
Omg! I love that second rifft!
The way he plays just gives me a an unusual vibe in a good way.
Yo Mark! What are you saving the riff at 2:13 for?
Who else comes back to this video just to hear that riff at 2:13? Unfortunately it hasn't made it into a real song, it's apparently considered a throw-away riff...
a moment of silence
I hope they somehow get reminded of this riff next time theyre in the studio. Might have new ideas to go with it now its been so long. But my god they still need to use it!
You may already know, but it's appeared in the recording of the new album, so it looks like it's gonna be a new song!
@@joshstead6078 Where did you see this?
@@adamrolt6157 On Misha's channel they've got a long video with lots of clips of them working on songs, it's in that video somewhere
that riff at 2:13 is amazing!
Why is this 9 years old riff giving me huge 'THANKS NOBUO' vibes
Hey Mark - any eta on the release of your sig pickups? Tone is outstanding here!
Mark's style of playing is pretty inspiring I have to say!
Hey @Mark Holcomb! Mabuhay! Great to sewe somebody born and raised in the PI doing big! Love that 2:12 riff! I'm going to call it Lamb of Rush! Bummed that it didn't make the cut! I could get away with not having Catch Fire and Remain indoors and replace them with just that groovy riff on a loop for ten minutes! =D
Mark you're the coolest dude awesome video now I must look into this
2021 and im still going back to that 2nd riff @2:13! Whose with me?
same :( i just want this in the upcoming periphery album
Same. we need it badly still.
Amazing. Need more technical guides like this
This man is my inspiration to get this good!
you there yet? :)
Love the glass cloud shirt
Bloody hell ! That playing !
Mark you are a beast. So good
Thanks Mark, would love to hear more about your powered cab... make and model yadada... is it a Tech21? Power Engine 60
killer stuff, Mark!
April 2023 here, this riff will probably be mark's legacy after his retirement
Wow Mark you have been such an inspiration on the way I play music ever since Haunted Shores. And you still jamming out some awesome riffs. Keep it up man.
what interface did you use mark?
hey man :) very nice video! id like to ask how you approach weird chords? i know all the major and minor stuff but should i experiment with different chord shapes?
So I'm still relying on tube saturation in 2019 and want a bedroom setup like this.. I tried an iRig and it was so noisy and laggy it was unusable. What's he using to interface? Will an iRig2 or HD cover it? Or is there a new standard out for less than $200?
Hello Mark, could you tell me which pickups model you're using on this video? Thanks
Hey mark, what model is that ebmm?
I've never seen this model with that headstock color?
Thanks
Please tell me that 2:13 made the cut for PIII
Isn't that Mile Zero? I could be wrong but it sounds similar
+OutlawStarkiller Nope. Unfortunately it won't be in PIII too.
One of the sound bites from the new studio update sounded like it could be part of one of the songs.
I guess it didn't :(
haha P2 came out two years before this video did starkiller
Nice "Ass Cloud" shirt. Bahaha :P
Awesome video! I look forward for more!
Damn! I should have looked down the comments, just said the same damn thing! haha
***** Ahaha, sorry man! :P
Mark!! does periphery ever perform pale aura live? i can't seem to find ANY video of it, but its by far one of my favorite songs!!
"Dude, dis recorder!" Awesome playing Mark!
what a phenomenal player
If everything you played is going through the bias that is nuts. How many layers of guitar like 2? also do you combine tones or just use one?
Jesus, this guy is amazing! And how is it that I JUST found out about him today? God......
Great vid Mark! Can you describe how you recorded these tracks? You mentioned in the description you're using a powered cab Make and model? I love my Jam up app especially when traveling but based on the tones you achieved here maybe I could be making better use of it when recording. Did you share some of your pre-sets for this?
Man, Pale Aura is underrated. Such a "Periphery"- sounding song.
