The dude plays a traditional power chord with a pinkie and a thumb. That’s both a stretch and a flex. Literally and figurativelly.

Now I'm not an expert but I'm fairly certain it's actually a sus2 chord. Assuming he's in a drop tuning it would be the root, the fifth, and the major second played an octave higher with the pinky (which would technically be the 9th, but because he isn't playing the major or minor third it's a sus2.) When he adds either the major or minor third with his index finger it becomes an add9 chord IIRC.

You're seeing it completely backwards. If anything, the fact that they're self-taught is evidence that they're extremely brilliant, and not Average Joes.
Having a theoretical framework from formal music education is a tremendous "shortcut" to write complicated music. If they had that privilege, they could've saved themselves up to 10 years in their musical journey.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Mark is behind a lot of Periphery's sound despite not being in the original trio and I think that his sound is the most difinitive out of all of the band. Also a really nice dude, had a brief meeting with him in Guitar Guitar in London and he was a really chill guy.

That's soooooo funny about the pinches. In my first year of recording arts class back in high school, after I started to get good at them, I had a song where every rotation of the riff had a pinch in the same spot, so there were 4 per verse (not that crazy, but I should've held it to every other rotation of the verse) and when my project was played, the teacher was like "sometimes a guitarists learns a new technique, a good one, and they get good at it, and then it's their job to not overdo it." And ll my friends raised their hands to tell him he was wrong, it was hilarious. But he was right, they're just too damn fun lol

Am I the only one who uses the pointer finger for pinch harmonics!? Same thing but pick hits first and fingernail of point after. Works for me

I literally watched a video earlier today talking about how the iconic pause in Sheck Wes’s song Mo Bamba was actually the computer fucking up. Now I’m thinking replacing and buying a new laptop because my machine is Herton… I’m rethinking that a little bit now lol

I need to improve my collaborative writing. I haven't been in a band in a while, & I still find myself stepping on my guitar player. It's only us 2 for now. I'm trying to take what I learned in the UX Design process & translate it to music. It was Discovery, Research, Info Architecture, Visual Design, Development.
Discovery/Research: I'm trying to decide the widest characteristics about the song like general bpm, story, arc, emotional direction etc, so we have something consistent to shoot for.
Info Arch: This contains website wireframes, so here I'm trying to decide basic drum beats, chord progressions, & song structure, & for us to agree on this & build on it later.
That's where the issue seems to be happening. He's a fantastic guitarist, but we keep dipping into "cherry on top" type decisions before completing the song layout. I'm trying to get a general structure of everything we can agree on, & then insert little parts transitions or details later.
Another thing I find myself having trouble with, is that I can't seem to make these decisions without most or all the lyrics being written. He's not that good with lyrics (I've written chopper raps) & he's got the 2nd V of a progressive classic rock song about someone with mania being manic, & being challenged & falling apart as the song goes on.
I am also emphasizing trying to do the basics in BandLab, but remote collab comes with it's own challenges as well.
Any tips, thoughts, or sources on improving collabs?

Man you have to make one of these with Scott Lepage from Polyphia, that would be awesome !

As a beginner guitar player, it absolutely blows my mind whenever I hear a guitarist, especially one as skilled as Mark Holcomb, say that he doesn't have a background in music theory. It's both inspiring and intimidating at the same time.
