You bought a traditional swedish house. Nice. It is not common to leave everything, it must have been a old person living there and the kids (or the state?, if there was no relatives) just did not want to take care of it. Think before you get rid of stuff because it could be hard to replace. For example the kitchen stowe that provides you with hot water and heat. It might just be one of those that you can use for heating the hole house connected to radiators. As you are in middle of nowhere I suggest that you keep as many firplaces as you could because electricity is not to be trusted, it could be shortages for weeks during very cold winters… Just keep in mind where you are. Just a tip..
Let me clarify, all the houses we looked at, would leave all the stuff in it for us to keep/throw away. In this case, it was his kids selling it indeed. And we definitely won't be throwing away stuff with a function / value. Thanks for the tips!

It's so nice when people actually moves to the cabins or small houses around Sweden and actually starting a life ther.e . It's alot of houses no one lives in and it's important that the whole country has people living there. So many younger people moving to Sweden and buying these "summer" homes. It would not be necessary to insulate anything if you are only there in the summer season so you are essentially starting from scratch. I LOVED seeing your "drawings" for the little house and gardens. That is an extra touch that many TH-camr's don't show the channel watchers. The gardens seem well thought out and the amount of sun you will get for a short growing season is great. That "root cellar" will be a must to get ready for storage. I grew up with grandparents who had a "successful" root cellar storing. most items wrapped in newspaper and placed in sand so they would not freeze in the winter. We had raised trays in the cellar. Your mechanical engineering background will be a most needed skill in the renovations.
Thank you for your message! Nice to hear you like the drawings! We do too. It helps us to get an idea of what things will look like. The garden has a lot of sun indeed. It will hopefully be great for growing our own food. Great to hear how your grandparents used the root cellar. We need to repair the door frame so we can close it off properly. Then we will use it next winter.
About Lupins. Try to move them to a place you want to grow them, and i asure you every single one of them will die. They pop up every where but you cant move them. 😅
Hi! Just found this channel. Welcome to Sweden and congrats to buying a nice swedish property. You know I have the exact same small cabin. I use it as a guesthouse. They are very common here in Sweden. Good luck with your renovations. Btw insulation in swedish houses are mostly 20 cm in walls and floor and at least 30 cm in roof! And you`ll need it🥶😂!
Hi there! Just discovered your channel this morning, watched this video, now subscribed, will watch the rest asap. What a wonderful video, very well done; tells the complete story and overview of your property. Absolutely gorgeous piece of property, how wonderful to have all the structures and in pretty good shape. It was nice the former owners left so many treasures, furniture and other materials, it would be so much fun to sort through it all and be able to use some. The plans you have for the property and buildings sounds very well thought out. The tiny house is adorable and will make a good " tiny house" while you're developing the rest. Personally, I would keep the cabin and not tear it down. It looks in good shape and could be a part of your compound in some way. Excited to see your progress and design ideas and collect some tips. Thank you. P.S. - I've been following the linked channel for a couple of years; she also bought property in Sweden and renovating her cottage/house. In case you want to have a look. th-cam.com/video/jjQy5VrqdZo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=liEqIcJAdhGpTVCs
Thank you for your kind message! We definitely found some nice treasures in the houses and barns. We might even dedicate a video to it. Our plans might change some what over time. We are planning on moving the cabin into the forest. So there will be a nice secluded spot for guests :)
At 03.40 when you open the door to the barn you can see metal sheets against the wall. Those are commonly used when we prepare firewood. You buy fresh logs (or neely cut fireeood if you don't want to cut and cleave yourself) cut, cleave and then stack the firewood outside to dry until next year. To protect the stacked firewood from rain and snow those metal sheets are laid on top of the stack and weighed in place with stones. The year after we put the firewood indoors to use.

You really have a lot of work to do. However most of this land has buildings that are in great condition. I understand you wanting to make it yours, but I would be happy with everything as it is except the small and large house need bathrooms added. I find it interesting the way you start your garden space. In Canada we would simply plow the soil and then top it with grass clippings, leaves, and some fertilizer. I am a 🇨🇦currently wintering is Phoenix Arizona. It’s nice to get away from the winter conditions as I am in my 70’s. Luckily my husband and I am still in good health. Wishing you and your wife all the best in your new adventure.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the video! We don't have the proper machinery for ploughing. Also we read that the "no-dig-method" might be better for the soil. We'll keep you posted.
Cute place. Where did you come from ? I hope your dream comes true , you've got a treasure and its in pretty good shape . Maybe being in the forest will calm you down abit and you wont feel the need to tear things down ? The newer cabin is darling and cozy . I cant imagine getting rid of it 😢 The world is in very strange times , that cabin could house a relative if things get worse and someone needs a home . The old owners left lots of useful things . Be thrifty , save your money as much as possible . You really are so lucky .. wishing the best to you ❤
Hi! We are from the Netherlands. Thank you for your kind words about the property! We are thinking about moving the cabin into the forest so our guests will have a nice secluded space a bit away from the main house :)
Mooi!
Seem to be in very good condition as compared to a lot of torp I've been looking at (wanting to buy a small house myself for reasonable price, not too far away from where I live but it's hard).
Wow, it is great that someone wants to take over and restore one of all these old, abandoned properties in our Swedish countryside. There are so many of them! I noticed that the previous owner has probably replaced the old traditional Swedish roof tiles with tin roofs, on the main house and tiny house. It would look really nice and more traditional to change it back. Is that something you have planned? 🙂
Thanks, that's so kind of you to say. In our area are a lot of abandoned properties indeed. We haven't decided about the roof yet. But thanks for the input!
If possible, leave the small storage room as a pantry (if it is in a northern direction). It keeps a low temperature and is good for storing food, even in summer. Have heard people call it "svale" up in Norrbotten (northern Sweden). (10:45 in the clip)
I love the cabin, the little house and main house. I think you should keep the cabin and make it a guest bedroom for the warmer seasons, or a studio to do your editing and such for your channel or maybe an art studio or crafting studio. I follow another person that did the same thing as you are trying to do and you should check out her channel as well. Main home and a cabin and she is remodeling the inside. Combined some rooms to make a larger kitchen and such. Her channel name is Roaming with Rosie. She did the back packing and living in a tent and then bought a home in Sweden in the woods. I just joined your channel and I am excited to see what will happen with your renovations!
Fabulous tour from the start. I would keep the chalet, no point in ridding. You have some tall overshadowing trees, that will limit sun exposure and have potential to fall onto your buildings in storms, do you plan to fell any?
All the trees that can hit our buildings are to north of them. So they won't be blocking any sun. They could definitely fall into them though. We're still thinking what to do with them as they're close to the property line as well. And felling them would mean that we wouldn't have any trees of our own on that side.. Keep you posted
I love seeing how others renovate these sweet cabins in sweden. ❤ only got one question: du you have a bathroom in the big house? I did not see any in your video.
6:44 - I was sure the small house is sauna, but it's not :)) .. looks more like a guest house. As I understand this place is absolutely remote .. no neighbors nearby? In this case you're lucky .. privacy is an invaluable asset .. so rare nowadays. May I ask - where are you from, how did you find this place and how much land it has? Asking coz I'm looking for something similar - in the wilderness and off the grid, but in my country it's impossible to find such a beautiful place. ✌ Let me guess .. you're Dutch, right? 😉
All good questions! We get these questions more often so i think we're going to make a video about it. We don't have any neighbours nearby indeed. The plot is about 4.5 ha. We're from the Netherlands. How about you?
We just bumped onto your vlog but are watching many other Swedish Cabin restoration vlogs, they all do the same thing demolish anything that is not modern and spend time and money…why?… if your intention is to live in the country and live of the land, why, why…why ….destroy…older buildings in the name of “renovating”…… why not just insulate better add some bathrooms and live with what is there already? Why
I thought the same thing - the cabin is beautiful, well put together. It would be a perfect place for guests. Why ever take it down? My first video to watch from this channel and they lost me.
Hi! We are definitely not planning on just destroying, so no worries! As you can see we extended the small house in exactly the same style as it was. For the main house we are planning on things like insulation, a bathroom and a bit more room for cooking in the kitchen. The cabin will be moved into the forest to give our guests a nice experience without them being too close to the main house
I’m sticking with them for abit, it’s if they start chucking away all that lovely timber especially with him saying he’s a carpenter, then they’ll probably lose me unless it’s full of worm or termites etc. I do wish them every luck, with it and that they find there dream.
Do you know, that especially in Värmland there were/are a lot of people of Finnish origin - known as Skogsfinnar or "Forest Finns"? They moved there voluntarily or involuntarily during the late 1500's-1600's, because Sweden wanted them to inhabit the empty forests. Later they were heavily oppressed and forcefully Swedified. Finns were imprisoned and their houses burnt. Using Finnish language was forbidden and reading Finnish books became a crime. Finns were even forced to emigrate to the colony of New Sweden in America, where the Finns became a majority. The iconic American wooden frontier cabin is of Finnish origin. Still the Finnish culture survived until 1960's, when the last Finnish-speaking Forest Finns died. Today the culture of the Forest Finns is reviving and people in Sweden are searching for their true roots. Today c. 1,700,000 Swedes and 500,000 Norwegians have Forest Finnish roots - e.g. Prince Daniel of Sweden included. In addition to that there are c. 220,000 Finnish-speakers in Sweden. Altogether there are over 700,000 people of 1st-3rd generation Finnish roots.
The small house is enough for us since we've been living in our camper for the last year. Also, we started working in september, which is to little time to make plans for and start with the big house. We've made friends with the neighbours who have a plow. Thanks
Seems like a nice property. Could you inform us how much you had to pay for it? Could help others considering if we should and could afford to do something similar....

that cabin NOOOOO don't take it down!!! make a super sauna out of it!!! perfect for one!!! those appear to be the same timbers used in a sauna!!! I wouldn't tear down one building!! just make them sturdy...wonder storage....could think about an air b n b too.....but no that cabin would be a sauna those built in bunk beds would turn into benches...enough space to max it out!!! please think about a sauna.....
We now decided to move the cabin. We will keep it. But it is too close to the house for our taste. So eventually we will put it in the forest for guests to have their own space.
How much area do you have there. I am a little disappointed that you have already decided to remove that cabin, as this could be used for friends and family as well. Funny how many people want to remove structure on their new property as soon as they arrive instead of looking for other uses for them.. oh well, your the driver.
Dont throw couch , glasses or lamps and stuf like that out.. These things from the 60 ties and 70 ties are starting to become werry poppulair in Skandinavia. If you are going to get reid of that stuff sell it online. The little cabin you wanna take down is a guest house that EVERYBODY in the countryside has.
Finland is like Sweden - there are a lot of old and also rather knew houses in the countryside - often with big plots of land. More often than not they are affordable - of course depending on the size of the land, the size and condition of the buildings etc. Also the more North or East you go - and further from the nearest town - the cheaper the properties are. With e.g. 100,000 € you'll have a lot of options, but you can get something from somewhere even by well under 50,000 €. You can search for options e.g. from Etuovi or Oikotie. And yes - we welcome with open arms people, who are ready and willing to live and renovate those buildings!
Please try to use the building for animals also. You will be happy you can use them for food and survive without have to go to the store. Plgs, chickens...
Hi. I am a old Swed ,and i heard you were going to lay out cardboard on the weistland, Dont, way i can garanti you are going to get a hugh ant colloni with egg in miljons .You have forestland in the nabourhood and there live Forest ants and a red ant that is nearley impossible to get ridd of and they bite horrible.you have probably even horseants in some old stumps out there. You can cut the gras and rake it of and even drive a cultivator over it and as finnich in one year lay black plasticfoil over that you take away before you cultivate and rake of the weed. often that weed will live in two years before you will bee free from it. Well you do as you wish but i have had own farm and done that misstake and got to suffer for that. The weistland is probably an old potatoland . If you have chanse to hire a traktor with plow so plow it and let it lay that year and do it again next year = two years . there is a chanse if there are turf you got yellow potatoworms and if you do like that they freez to daeth and you got a good potato land. We are thinking about moving it into the forest a bit more so our guests will have a nice secluded spot right into the forest and a bit away from the main house :)
It's because beardy hipsters were first spawned in Sweden back in the early noughties. The cult spread throughout 'up and coming' parts of Western cities, and once they'd ruined them and out-priced themselves, they migrate back to the source, like salmon, to spawn again. This time with video cameras.
What a great place! And great plans!- Please tell the price for it, location and how did you buy it? How can you support yourself financially, if you need that? I am very interested to learn more.- Thank you , Torben from Denmark.

The garden has a lot of sun indeed. It will hopefully be great for growing our own food. Great to hear how your grandparents used the root cellar. We need to repair the door frame so we can close it off properly. Then we will use it next winter.
Lovely sneak view of your new property. Shows us clearly how it all looks like and your plans with it in the near future. 😍
About Lupins. Try to move them to a place you want to grow them, and i asure you every single one of them will die.
They pop up every where but you cant move them. 😅
Beautiful place
Thank you!
Great! I like your video very much.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for your kind message!
Goed gedaan! Mooi project, succes!
Good plans!
Thanks!
@@buildaway- Good idea to have a few videos to show case the treasures discovered while renovating and plans to use some of the found items.
Thanks for the tip! Didn't know that!
@@buildaway lets see if I can post a link so you can see.

I love the home.and the kitchen .gorgeous place I subscribed. Looking forward to watching what u all do.
Thanks!
The newer cabin is darling and cozy
. I cant imagine getting rid of it 😢
The world is in very strange times , that cabin could house a relative if things get worse and someone needs a home .
Mooi stuk grond!! En veel leuke huisjes etc. Werken jullie vanuit daar of gaan jullie helemaal zelfvoorzienend leven?
I love woodpeckers❤️
So do we! Luckily we've got a lot of them around here.
Looks like a nice place. Good luck!
Btw, all that wood in the shed seems useful. I'd be happy with that if I were you :p
Mooi!
Wow I can't wait to see what you guys do with it.. maybe we have to visit Sweden again.. might even get our hands dirty
Whatever you do, do not get rid of the old wood burning stove. Really cosy and can save you some heating cost in winter. Or in case of power loss.
We will definitely keep the stove :)
Welcome to Sweden and good luck 🥰
Tack så mycket! Good to be here!
Seem to be in very good condition as compared to a lot of torp I've been looking at (wanting to buy a small house myself for reasonable price, not too far away from where I live but it's hard).
We've seen properties in worse conditions as well. Good luck with your search!
Metal roofing is very practical & looks nice. Very common in Finland.
Thanks for the tip! We will keep the room😁
Your property is beautiful and what a bonus with all the other buildings!! Can you give an approx. location/
Thanks! We're on the line of Oslo/ Stockholm
Thank you so much! We're planning on moving the cabin to the woods and probably make it a guesthouse. We've follow Rosie as well.
This property is far superior with that fantastic big barn.
Prachtig! ❤
Nice!
Thanks!
I love seeing how others renovate these sweet cabins in sweden. ❤ only got one question: du you have a bathroom in the big house? I did not see any in your video.
Thanks!
The big house doesn't have a bathroom. In time we will build a bathroom though.
Let me guess .. you're Dutch, right? 😉
All good questions! We get these questions more often so i think we're going to make a video about it. We don't have any neighbours nearby indeed. The plot is about 4.5 ha. We're from the Netherlands. How about you?
@@buildaway - 4.5 ha is great .. enough of space, plus your own firewood, I guess. I'm your neighbor, so to speak - from an island called Ösel 😉✌
Please don't destroy perfectly beautiful buildings most people would give their eye teeth for! Why???

seems like you are 2 in 1,258 people who bought a cabin in the Swedish woods, according to my algorithm.
Why
Exactly what I thought
I thought the same thing - the cabin is beautiful, well put together. It would be a perfect place for guests. Why ever take it down? My first video to watch from this channel and they lost me.
Me too ?????
But I do wish them well in this .
Congrats! Very nice, looks like this is in Värmland?
Yes, it is!
@@buildaway I saw the old numberplates in the garage begining with letter S, that stands for Svealand 😎
@@wilderness.patrol Not right - the letter "S" stands for "Värmland".
Thanks for this story, very interesting. Nice to know ☺️
Where is it in Sweden?
And how much did you pay for it?
Really like the outlay off the buildings and the big garden 😊
Hi, it is on the line of Oslo and Stockholm. We paid about 1.000.000 SEK.
Thanks for the input. We're thinking about dedicating a video to answer those questions, since you're not the first to ask.
How big is the property, what was the price range, whisch areal in Sweden? Good luck with the project❤
It's about 4.6ha. We bought it for around 1million Swedish Krones and it is somewhat on the line of Oslo Stockholm
💜
Fantastisch!
If you want modern buy modern and leave old cottages to those who want to preserve our heritage.
Hi! We don't want modern, but we would like to have some things like insulation and a bathroom :)
Great shots! What camera and drone equipment are you using?
Thanks! My camera is a Canon m50, usually with a 15/45mm f3.5 lens, sometimes a 55/200mm f4.5. Drone is a DJI mini 2. And some phone footage as well.

It will be to close to the big house. So, we will move it into the forest for guests.
Where in Sweden is this located?
It's in Värmland province

that cabin NOOOOO don't take it down!!! make a super sauna out of it!!! perfect for one!!! those appear to be the same timbers used in a sauna!!!
Where are you in Sweden? How much did you pay for this place?
We're on the line Oslo/ Stockholm. We'll dedicate a video to the financial side of this project.
How much area do you have there. I am a little disappointed that you have already decided to remove that cabin, as this could be used for friends and family as well. Funny how many people want to remove structure on their new property as soon as they arrive instead of looking for other uses for them.. oh well, your the driver.
Hi. It's about 4.6ha. No worries about the cabin. We are planning on moving it into the forest so our guests will have a nice secluded space.
You bought a summer house not a regular house, that’s why there’s no insulation lol
Exactly 💯
Hi. Thank you for your message! We happen to love old stuff as well, so we won't just throw things away. Thanks for the tip.
The locals must love the hords of foreigners buying their houses because it's a trend on youtube...yawn.
It's hardly "hoards" of foreigners, is it? It's better these deserted houses will come to use againg -I'd say it's a win-win situation for the area.
How much it cost!!!!!!!!!!!
About 1.000.000 SEK.
Hi! Thanks for the tips and insights. Only, this is an older video, and in the meantime we already started our garden. We'll see how it goes, but it is all well for now. Except for the lupines, these keep popping up...

Somewhere on the line of Oslo and Stockholm.
Don't take down the little cabin please.
We are thinking about moving it into the forest a bit more so our guests will have a nice secluded spot right into the forest and a bit away from the main house :)
@@buildaway Yes. That would be awesome. Much better that way. The cabin is in great shape and very cute.
Why does everyone buy cabins in Sweden? It seems to be the new fad
They are dirt cheap.
For us it's that the people are friendly, the cabins are really nice and there's a lot of nature. Also, the prices are reasonable.
@@buildaway
The same in Finland.
It's because beardy hipsters were first spawned in Sweden back in the early noughties. The cult spread throughout 'up and coming' parts of Western cities, and once they'd ruined them and out-priced themselves, they migrate back to the source, like salmon, to spawn again. This time with video cameras.
All i see is potential.
So do we! Thanks
What a great place! And great plans!-
Please tell the price for it, location and how did you buy it? How can you support yourself financially, if you need that?
