@Tom Jones , This gay guy went to see Adrian Street in Florence ,Alabama back in the 1980's and the colosseum was positively pack that night because of Adrian Street. I'm still amazed at how people will pay big money to hate a wrestler but that night they sure did. Adrian was a money maker and big crowd drawing machine. Last wrestling match I ever went to and the most memorable. My friend and I laughed our asses of at the entire situation. And we never believed for one minute he was gay either we knew the times and the score. Brilliant marketing !

I admit I downloaded "Imagine What I Could Do To You" from Amazon last year... Street was also very popular in the Continental area in Alabama. Fans in Alabama loved him and Miss Linda...
The first time I ever saw Adrian and Linda in person was on a Continental show in Arab, Alabama. It was by far the greatest wrestling event to ever take place there. Tony Anthony vs. Brad Armstrong. Bullet vs. Jerry Stubbs. Kevin Sullivan vs. somebody I can't remember because I was so shocked to see Sullivan in person. And Adrian vs Wildcat Wendell Cooley. Adrian hit Wendell with a low blow, grabbed his tights and threw him out over the second rope, kicking him in the ass on the way down, and bellowed "TAKE THAT YOU QUEER!" with that Welsh accent. Wendell literally had cousins in the audience that night, being from around there. The crowd went apeshit. It was LOUD. I thought a riot might break out.
When you think about it, getting Christian conservatives in the southern us Bible Belt to cheer for a flamboyant gay man might be possibly the most impressive accomplishment in the history of pro wrestling.
That's probably the best part of Adrian Street to me. Here's this guy being extremely flamboyant, to say the very least, in almost everything he was doing, but could stretch almost everyone he wanted to

My dad used to take me to see wrestling at boutwell auditorium in Birmingham all the time! Fond memories! Adrian, bullet bob, lord humongous, wildcat Wendell cooley.....man it was the best!
I remember seeing one of Adrian's interviews dome recently. He said he met a gay fan once that told him that the fan could tell that Adrian was actually straight. Adrian asked him how did he know. The fan said no gay guy was as flaming as he was in the ring.

No one back in the day would admit being a fan of Adrian Street except me and my best friend and we were and are gay. Magnificent marketing at the right time. People paid big money to hate Adrian Street because they thought he was actually gay. Wonderful move and it worked box office magic big time. $$$$ Never laughed our asses off in public that that then or since. I still laugh 35 or so years later about going to see him. Best time I ever had at a paid event.
Adrian Street went into business making apparel for other wrestlers. I had him make me a tight singlet combo. One side red the other side was white. I got a lot of compliments from the other workers
I first saw Adrian in 1986 or 87 when I rented "Grunt! The Wrestling Movie' at age 12 from the corner video store. In Michigan we didnt get Continental or Mid-south so the times I got to actually see his matches were few and far between, but right away, I knew this guy was great, and he really knew how to get over as a heel. I was an instant fan, and still mark out for Adrian.

Loved Adrian. First time I for certain remember Adrain was when he worked CCW and I saw him on their TV hosted by the legend Gordon Solie. What an incredible gimmick and he played it to perfection but in the ring the guy was a legit technician who could pull off moves to which you'd just watch in awe. I recently watched a match he had with Wendall Cooley at the time and he made a move on Wendall in which from behind Adrian swung his entire body up across Wendall's back, wrapped him up by his arms and then rolled back down to flip Wendall and wrapped him up down to the mat. I've watched that move numerous times and I'm still in awe as to how he pulls off this legit hold. When Corney sez the man's a shooter, not doubt, he's a legit shooter. I'd love to see Adrian Street in wrestling today. Those squash matches he had in Mid atlantic wrestling was hilarious. He would act like a prissy gay dude but once he decided to he would take these dudes down and beat the living hell out of somebody. His feud with Jimmy Valiant was one of the best. He would kiss the opponents right on the mouth after he beat them.

@@RobwLPOC That's very much the World of Sport style, you could have bad guys who were great hold for hold wrestlers, or high flyers (look up Mark "Rollerball" Rocco as an example), they'd get a crowd reaction by treating their opponent with distain, or casual callousness...closest I've seen to it is Brian Danielson's recent AEW stuff he's doing a classic "World of Sport" style villain. William Regal did it too.
Vince McMahon gave Adonis the "gay" gimmick as a punishment for his continual siovely and unprofessional appearance on the road, but Adonis saw the potential and got himself over as a heel - while still turning up to airports looking like a slob!. So Vince tried punishing him more with the hair match at WM3 before ultimately firing him.
The fact that Adonis and Street had the same first name Adrian was just a coincidence. Adrian is Street's real name while Keith Franke had been using the name Adrian Adonis for his character as a leather-clad New York street thug since the late '70s.
Kurt Van Der Bogarde that's a LIE. Actually, it was Adonis' idea, not Vince's. So much that he kept the gimmick long after leaving WWE until his untimely passing.

Barnes was Beautiful Bobby Barnes and he did a similar gimmick - he didn't become Bad Boy Bobby Barnes until around 1979
He also had his own ring music way before WWFs rockin wrestling. He actually created an entire album of just his music, which was way before anyone's time, including Hulk Hogan.
I have nothing but respect for wrestlers from Adrian's era (both heels and blue eyes). I live in a country town and whenever there was a wrestling promotion on there the wrestlers gave it their all irrespective of the relatively small crowds. And the fans really appreciated them for it.
While they were in Memphis I saw Adrian vs Randy Savage. They both sold the gimmicks very well. Needless to say there was language that they can not use today
Love the Adrian Street stories. What's never mentioned is that if you watch his matches, he goes from the gimmick to psycho shooter really quick. That's what made him for me.
It was a joy watching the Dundee/Street feud. Both incredibly talented in the ring, both great on the mic. And Adrian's music...who else were creating their own ring entrance music? Innovative and fun to watch. I hope he and Linda are doing well and God bless them.
Got nostalgic and looked up a match I actually watched when it was originally broadcast . It was March 29th 1986 in Continental Championship Wrestling hosted by Gordon Solie . Adrian Street defending the Southeast Heavyweight Title against Wildcat Wendell Cooley who in my opinion is one of the most under rated wrestlers .
Wendell Cooley, from Milton, Florida. He was a guy that hit the business at the wrong time--he was trained to be and excelled at wrestling at the top-territory-guy level, but at a time when territories were dying. He got injured pretty badly, which also set him back some. He definitely had the talent, the athleticism, and the look (maybe minus the mullet, lol) to be a star in WCW at least, but he only ever did TV jobs for them because I think he had a full-time job back in Florida.
@@tonyrichards254 If I remember correctly. Wendell's brother was a better wrestler, but an injury put him out. Wendell went on to excel as a single wrestler. He was pretty good in the ring and had the look. Adrian Street was the most entertaining wrestler I got the honor to watch and that is saying something here in Birmingham, AL.

Mick Foley talked once about having him stretch him cuz he wanted to learn a couple things. Mick says he is unable to tell a hospital the number 10 when they asked him pain on the scale to 1 to 10. I just listened to an interview with Bruce Hart and Adrian Street, Bruce mentioned to Adrian that Dynamite Kid had told him, a couple of the other brothers and Stu himself that Adrian was a huge influence on him. He was a big fan of Adrian's famous British wrestling days and Adrian's success being the size he was inspired Dynamite Kid to give it a try even though he was so small.
Todays kid's will never understand this, but as a kid watching any scraps of wrestling you could find on however many channels you could get on your tv set with rabbit ears. Maybe you managed to see a couple of matches by a particular wrestler, and were hooked and then always looked for any more you could find. I saw him on "Grunt! The Wrestling Movie" on video in 1986. The movie was god awful, but Adrian was awesome.
"Grunt: the wrestling movie" was so horrible it was great at the same time. Part of the reason and is so entertaining is because it is such a horribly acted movie.
A lot of wrestling fans don't get 'Grunt! The Wrestling Movie'. Its main theme is a fond and respectful pisstake on the fun ride of getting caught up in kayfabe drama. Kayfabe is treated as real in the movie, no matter how ludicrous the action and sold through the reactions of the hilariously stupid documentary maker. The payoff for this approach is a genuine pop (if you are caught up in the kayfabe ride) when Mad Dog rides in on his Harley to save the day in the battle royal for the title (vacated by the champion Mad Dog decapitated in the ring and who strangely enough had not defended his title since). The whole is Mad Dog the Mask tease sets this up, and calling a masked wrestler the Mask just works for me. Adrian Street is the icing on the cake in this movie, his music fits well and his presence holds the whole thing together while they get to the battle royal Also funny for sending up wrestling commentary, and the black and white Mad Dog v Skullcrusher at the beginning is classic cinema, the masked head rolling on the floor right up there with Citizen Kane's Rosebud scene (perhaps)

The best part of Grunt we're Adrian's scenes and the Murdoch/Destroyer match with the Mask where Adrian's song "I Really Love Breaking Bones" is playing.
I would make sense that Watts would "get" Adrian's gimmick, if you consider what some of the big draws in that territory had always been: The Hollywood Blonds (Jerry Brown & Buddy Roberts), The Garvins, Dandy Jack Donovan & Handsome Ron Reed, a version of The Fargo's back in the early 60's. Heck, even the original Gorgeous George had came through the territory late in his career. The Blond, effeminate gimmick had *always* been money in the Tulsa territory, and Watts would have seen that in the 60's and 70's as he came in and out of the territory. Adrian just took this gimmick to an entirely different level, with an entirely different skillset.
Another thing people don't know about Bill Watts is that his father was British--born in Liverpool, England, in fact. So he always had a secret admiraton for British wrestlers. Keep in mind, it was Watts who was instrumental for bringing Steve Regal to the States
People are misconstruing what the Undertaker just said about the people in the business today being soft and they're being real men when he got in. I'm using Adrian Street as an example of people being more intimidating and believable than the current roster.

The funny thing about wrestling is that the toughest guys were often some the most under utilized and unknown guys . In the US wrestling began to become more in line with movie and TV actionstars . Wrestling was not really aporeciated for the deadly martial art is was any more ... lots more punching and kicking , no stretching . Stretching is worse than getting a blackeyed by far but the fans that bought tickets did not have a real underdtanding of wrestling like MMA fans today do . Put a guy in an armbar in wrestling and the fans go buy popcorn , just try to get an armbar in legit MMA and people sit on the edges of their seats
Any new wrestling company that wants to be out of the showbiz wredtling companies shadows should re-educate the public to what actual combat looks like . Other wise You have AEWs flying circus and WWEs safe branding .
Exotic Adrian Street was fairly well known in the 1980s in the territories. The first half of his American run the territories were still healthy, it was until the very end in 88-89 that the territories were pretty close to dead and it was Jim Crockett or WCW and WWF. Jerry Jarrett still kept Memphis wrestling around for most the 90s as well but anybody who ended up working there pretty much starved to death. It was great experience but they got paid just crap. I definitely agree he is almost criminally unknown to most of today's fans at all. He deserves more recognition respect and for his name to be a lot more well-known not only for his historical contributions to professional wrestling, but as well he inspired David Bowie Marc Bolan and T.rex and the Wardrobe of the glam-rock movement in England during the 60s He always tells the story how at the one place that made custom jackets Elton John was just about threatening the guy after he spotted one of Adrian's jackets and wanted it before offering the guy more and more money to sell it to him. Finally the guy told Elton whose jacket it was, since Elton Mick Jagger and a bunch of guys hung out in the one bar owned by a wrestler where Adrian would often go Elton definitely knew who Adrian Street was and obviously knew right away he had better not show up anywhere in public especially the bar with Adrian's jacket on or it might be a very painful night for him.

There were much more skilled guys at that than he was and there were better wrestlers as well .Adrian was just an odd mix of both while mastering neither . He would be quick to tell you that , too .

Adrian mentioned that No.. in fact he has never actually set foot in the building, ever! But, when he was starting the vast majority of the guys he was wrestling against had been at least partially trained there and if you could not DO a move on them that you could "take on them", they were not going to LET you do a move on them, . You had to take something for they would give you anything and you had to earn their respect first. So you either got pretty close to as good really fast or you got eaten alive. I remember watching a separate interview where he mentioned he separated the guy's shoulder in the first round of his first match and went to the back with a big smile all proud of himself asking the promoter when he was going to get a title shot LOL the promoter ripped him a new one, but did like his enthusiasm and his heart so he told Adrian he wanted him to get trained on how to work and actually wrestle, " no one's going to pay to see you if all your matches only last less than 2 minutes you fool!" so he needed to go to Johnny Kilroy’s Gym. He was told to ask for "Iron Jaw" Joe Murphy and Tony Scarlo with the message: "Teach me to die." They taught him wrestling and a lot of humility and pain as well. So he was trained in catch wrestling by some fairly respectable names, but was not from the legendary Wigan snake pit. ( which for all its legendary status was a POS dump of a building that was basically made out of whatever the guys who originally built it could afford to buy and what scrap materials they could scrounge up to build it with) To be fair, not everyone who did "train" in the snake pit would be necessarily better than Adrian either. Lots of people may have gone and "trained in the Wigan Snakepit" but just like how there's a lot of people who have "trained in Judo" under "Uncle Gene" Judo Gene LeBell over the last 60 plus years, there's only a couple dozen who are actually certified as black belts (Chuck Norris and Roddy Piper being two of the only about two dozen) by Gene LeBell personally. You got to logically assume the same that there is only a limited or select group of those people who would truly be considered "graduates" of the snake pit and trained primarily under and are/were for lack of a better term, acknowledged as "esteemed Snakepit alumni" by Billy Riley himself. For every Billy Robinson or Karl gotch, there's probably 50 or 100 guys nobody has ever heard of or actually meant something to catch wrestling who had trained in the "Snakepit" over the years.

He knew he was a smaller guy and average, so he knew he had to do something to stand out from the crowd. Adrian's skill in comparison to the in ring skill level of the vast majority of American wrestlers at the time... Different story. There were not a whole lot that were on/near his level. He mentioned he was actually kind of surprised at the overall level of talent compared to the skill guys guys needed to make it in Britain. I remember him joking that he thought to himself one time that Miss Linda probably was probably a better actual wrestler and could probably outwork about half the guys in the business back then in the USA as an in-ring performer.

Jim, I live in Shreveport and Pizza King shut down many many years ago because they were dealing drugs, weed and cocaine from the restaurant and got busted by the ATF. Now pizza king is gone and George’s grill is gone and that was replaced by a new Centenary Fieldhouse and practice football field for their new Division 3 football team plus Brocato’s is now India’s Restaurant

I sneaked into to see Adrian Street and his Tag team partner Bobbie Barnes in my local Sports Centre as we used to call them in the UK. Stretford, Manchester. Less than half a mile from Man. Utd's football ground. The main sports area was blocked off from the rest of the building just for the show. My friend and I were 13/14 years old. We went in, in our gym gear/football kits and then went through the barriers to get to see them. We didn't get to stay... obviously we stood out from all the other fans dressed in normal clothing... we had shorts, and football tops. The security were laughing at us sat this trying to look as normal and innocent as possible. They said we could have stayed but all the seats were sold... there really was nowhere they could hide us. Ha ha.

@Tom Jones , This gay guy went to see Adrian Street in Florence ,Alabama back in the 1980's and the colosseum was positively pack that night because of Adrian Street. I'm still amazed at how people will pay big money to hate a wrestler but that night they sure did. Adrian was a money maker and big crowd drawing machine. Last wrestling match I ever went to and the most memorable. My friend and I laughed our asses of at the entire situation. And we never believed for one minute he was gay either we knew the times and the score. Brilliant marketing !

The first time I ever saw Adrian and Linda in person was on a Continental show in Arab, Alabama. It was by far the greatest wrestling event to ever take place there. Tony Anthony vs. Brad Armstrong. Bullet vs. Jerry Stubbs. Kevin Sullivan vs. somebody I can't remember because I was so shocked to see Sullivan in person. And Adrian vs Wildcat Wendell Cooley. Adrian hit Wendell with a low blow, grabbed his tights and threw him out over the second rope, kicking him in the ass on the way down, and bellowed "TAKE THAT YOU QUEER!" with that Welsh accent. Wendell literally had cousins in the audience that night, being from around there. The crowd went apeshit. It was LOUD. I thought a riot might break out.
When you think about it, getting Christian conservatives in the southern us Bible Belt to cheer for a flamboyant gay man might be possibly the most impressive accomplishment in the history of pro wrestling.
Adrian had a wonderful "dismissive" face. Like "Yes, yes you're tough, I'm sure. You understand I'm about to hurt you in many ways love?"
That's probably the best part of Adrian Street to me. Here's this guy being extremely flamboyant, to say the very least, in almost everything he was doing, but could stretch almost everyone he wanted to
Growing up in Pensacola this was one of my favorite characters ever! Attending shows at the Bayfront was a must.
Adrian was awesome. I always got a kick out of his music videos as well whether I was "Imagine What I Could Do To You" or "I'm in love with me" I enjoyed them.

I got a laugh from him on Facebook cuz I responded that both him and Chuck Norris are now 81 years old and both him and Chuck Norris are the only two 81 year old men on this planet that even now me at a healthy 45 would never in my dreams think of pissing off or try messing with.
My dad used to take me to see wrestling at boutwell auditorium in Birmingham all the time! Fond memories! Adrian, bullet bob, lord humongous, wildcat Wendell cooley.....man it was the best!
I remember seeing one of Adrian's interviews dome recently. He said he met a gay fan once that told him that the fan could tell that Adrian was actually straight. Adrian asked him how did he know. The fan said no gay guy was as flaming as he was in the ring.
The fact he had a babyface run in Continental is a testament to his natural charisma and great booking...
He also had a babyface run in LPWA. He was one half of the mixed tag team champs with Miss Linda.

No one back in the day would admit being a fan of Adrian Street except me and my best friend and we were and are gay. Magnificent marketing at the right time. People paid big money to hate Adrian Street because they thought he was actually gay. Wonderful move and it worked box office magic big time. $$$$ Never laughed our asses off in public that that then or since. I still laugh 35 or so years later about going to see him. Best time I ever had at a paid event.
Adrian Street went into business making apparel for other wrestlers. I had him make me a tight singlet combo. One side red the other side was white. I got a lot of compliments from the other workers
I first saw Adrian in 1986 or 87 when I rented "Grunt! The Wrestling Movie' at age 12 from the corner video store. In Michigan we didnt get Continental or Mid-south so the times I got to actually see his matches were few and far between, but right away, I knew this guy was great, and he really knew how to get over as a heel. I was an instant fan, and still mark out for Adrian.

Loved Adrian. First time I for certain remember Adrain was when he worked CCW and I saw him on their TV hosted by the legend Gordon Solie. What an incredible gimmick and he played it to perfection but in the ring the guy was a legit technician who could pull off moves to which you'd just watch in awe. I recently watched a match he had with Wendall Cooley at the time and he made a move on Wendall in which from behind Adrian swung his entire body up across Wendall's back, wrapped him up by his arms and then rolled back down to flip Wendall and wrapped him up down to the mat. I've watched that move numerous times and I'm still in awe as to how he pulls off this legit hold. When Corney sez the man's a shooter, not doubt, he's a legit shooter. The gold dust influence is without question, but i was a student at his school when Rico was sent to learn psychology for his character... Adrian was pissed when we all watched Ricco's underwhelming interpretation of the gimmick.
Goldust was obviously influenced by Street. But not as obvious as Shawn Michaels. All the way down to the outfits.

I'd love to see Adrian Street in wrestling today. Those squash matches he had in Mid atlantic wrestling was hilarious. He would act like a prissy gay dude but once he decided to he would take these dudes down and beat the living hell out of somebody. His feud with Jimmy Valiant was one of the best. He would kiss the opponents right on the mouth after he beat them.
Thank god for TH-cam that I can look up all those old matches from Mid-Atlantic and Memphis wrestling for us old guys from other territories.

I watched Adrian Street wrestle on tv when i was a kid. He was very good in the ring. One of the best British wrestlers ever
And if you want even better, there are some of his old World of Sport British matches on TH-cam here. He is way better technical wrestler than most people think. Dean malenko Bret Hart Etc would have a hard time keeping up with him as far as technical wrestling skill
@@RobwLPOC That's very much the World of Sport style, you could have bad guys who were great hold for hold wrestlers, or high flyers (look up Mark "Rollerball" Rocco as an example), they'd get a crowd reaction by treating their opponent with distain, or casual callousness...closest I've seen to it is Brian Danielson's recent AEW stuff he's doing a classic "World of Sport" style villain. William Regal did it too.
I always thought Adrian Adonis ripped off Adrian Street. Street was more entertaining though.

Vince McMahon gave Adonis the "gay" gimmick as a punishment for his continual siovely and unprofessional appearance on the road, but Adonis saw the potential and got himself over as a heel - while still turning up to airports looking like a slob!. So Vince tried punishing him more with the hair match at WM3 before ultimately firing him.
The fact that Adonis and Street had the same first name Adrian was just a coincidence. Adrian is Street's real name while Keith Franke had been using the name Adrian Adonis for his character as a leather-clad New York street thug since the late '70s.
Kurt Van Der Bogarde that's a LIE. Actually, it was Adonis' idea, not Vince's. So much that he kept the gimmick long after leaving WWE until his untimely passing.
@@SteveChiverton The Hells Angels were back in the 1960s and they were NOT a leather clad thug gimmick - they were an early version of the same gimmick Adrian did in the 70s on TV (and 80s in America). Barnes was Beautiful Bobby Barnes and he did a similar gimmick - he didn't become Bad Boy Bobby Barnes until around 1979
He also had his own ring music way before WWFs rockin wrestling. He actually created an entire album of just his music, which was way before anyone's time, including Hulk Hogan.
I have nothing but respect for wrestlers from Adrian's era (both heels and blue eyes). I live in a country town and whenever there was a wrestling promotion on there the wrestlers gave it their all irrespective of the relatively small crowds. And the fans really appreciated them for it.

It was a joy watching the Dundee/Street feud. Both incredibly talented in the ring, both great on the mic. And Adrian's music...who else were creating their own ring entrance music? Innovative and fun to watch. I hope he and Linda are doing well and God bless them.

Got nostalgic and looked up a match I actually watched when it was originally broadcast . It was March 29th 1986 in Continental Championship Wrestling hosted by Gordon Solie . Adrian Street defending the Southeast Heavyweight Title against Wildcat Wendell Cooley who in my opinion is one of the most under rated wrestlers .
Wendell Cooley, from Milton, Florida. He was a guy that hit the business at the wrong time--he was trained to be and excelled at wrestling at the top-territory-guy level, but at a time when territories were dying. He got injured pretty badly, which also set him back some. He definitely had the talent, the athleticism, and the look (maybe minus the mullet, lol) to be a star in WCW at least, but he only ever did TV jobs for them because I think he had a full-time job back in Florida.
@@tonyrichards254 If I remember correctly. Wendell's brother was a better wrestler, but an injury put him out. Wendell went on to excel as a single wrestler. He was pretty good in the ring and had the look. Adrian Street was the most entertaining wrestler I got the honor to watch and that is saying something here in Birmingham, AL.

I wouldn't doubt it. He's from Wigan Billy Robinson type School. Wasn't a very big guy but was really tough. Mick Foley talked once about having him stretch him cuz he wanted to learn a couple things. Mick says he is unable to tell a hospital the number 10 when they asked him pain on the scale to 1 to 10. Because number 10 is what he felt that day
I just listened to an interview with Bruce Hart and Adrian Street, Bruce mentioned to Adrian that Dynamite Kid had told him, a couple of the other brothers and Stu himself that Adrian was a huge influence on him. He was a big fan of Adrian's famous British wrestling days and Adrian's success being the size he was inspired Dynamite Kid to give it a try even though he was so small.
Todays kid's will never understand this, but as a kid watching any scraps of wrestling you could find on however many channels you could get on your tv set with rabbit ears.
Maybe you managed to see a couple of matches by a particular wrestler, and were hooked and then always looked for any more you could find.
I saw him on "Grunt! The Wrestling Movie" on video in 1986. The movie was god awful, but Adrian was awesome.
"Grunt: the wrestling movie" was so horrible it was great at the same time. Part of the reason and is so entertaining is because it is such a horribly acted movie.
A lot of wrestling fans don't get 'Grunt! The Wrestling Movie'. Its main theme is a fond and respectful pisstake on the fun ride of getting caught up in kayfabe drama. Kayfabe is treated as real in the movie, no matter how ludicrous the action and sold through the reactions of the hilariously stupid documentary maker. The payoff for this approach is a genuine pop (if you are caught up in the kayfabe ride) when Mad Dog rides in on his Harley to save the day in the battle royal for the title (vacated by the champion Mad Dog decapitated in the ring and who strangely enough had not defended his title since). The whole is Mad Dog the Mask tease sets this up, and calling a masked wrestler the Mask just works for me. Adrian Street is the icing on the cake in this movie, his music fits well and his presence holds the whole thing together while they get to the battle royal
Also funny for sending up wrestling commentary, and the black and white Mad Dog v Skullcrusher at the beginning is classic cinema, the masked head rolling on the floor right up there with Citizen Kane's Rosebud scene (perhaps)

The best part of Grunt we're Adrian's scenes and the Murdoch/Destroyer match with the Mask where Adrian's song "I Really Love Breaking Bones" is playing.
I would make sense that Watts would "get" Adrian's gimmick, if you consider what some of the big draws in that territory had always been: The Hollywood Blonds (Jerry Brown & Buddy Roberts), The Garvins, Dandy Jack Donovan & Handsome Ron Reed, a version of The Fargo's back in the early 60's. Heck, even the original Gorgeous George had came through the territory late in his career. The Blond, effeminate gimmick had *always* been money in the Tulsa territory, and Watts would have seen that in the 60's and 70's as he came in and out of the territory. Adrian just took this gimmick to an entirely different level, with an entirely different skillset.
Another thing people don't know about Bill Watts is that his father was British--born in Liverpool, England, in fact. So he always had a secret admiraton for British wrestlers. Keep in mind, it was Watts who was instrumental for bringing Steve Regal to the States

The funny thing about wrestling is that the toughest guys were often some the most under utilized and unknown guys . In the US wrestling began to become more in line with movie and TV actionstars . Wrestling was not really aporeciated for the deadly martial art is was any more ... lots more punching and kicking , no stretching . Stretching is worse than getting a blackeyed by far but the fans that bought tickets did not have a real underdtanding of wrestling like MMA fans today do . Put a guy in an armbar in wrestling and the fans go buy popcorn , just try to get an armbar in legit MMA and people sit on the edges of their seats
Any new wrestling company that wants to be out of the showbiz wredtling companies shadows should re-educate the public to what actual combat looks like . Other wise You have AEWs flying circus and WWEs safe branding .
Exotic Adrian Street was fairly well known in the 1980s in the territories. The first half of his American run the territories were still healthy, it was until the very end in 88-89 that the territories were pretty close to dead and it was Jim Crockett or WCW and WWF. Jerry Jarrett still kept Memphis wrestling around for most the 90s as well but anybody who ended up working there pretty much starved to death. It was great experience but they got paid just crap.
I definitely agree he is almost criminally unknown to most of today's fans at all. He deserves more recognition respect and for his name to be a lot more well-known not only for his historical contributions to professional wrestling, but as well he inspired David Bowie Marc Bolan and T.rex and the Wardrobe of the glam-rock movement in England during the 60s
He always tells the story how at the one place that made custom jackets Elton John was just about threatening the guy after he spotted one of Adrian's jackets and wanted it before offering the guy more and more money to sell it to him.
Finally the guy told Elton whose jacket it was, since Elton Mick Jagger and a bunch of guys hung out in the one bar owned by a wrestler where Adrian would often go Elton definitely knew who Adrian Street was and obviously knew right away he had better not show up anywhere in public especially the bar with Adrian's jacket on or it might be a very painful night for him.

There were much more skilled guys at that than he was and there were better wrestlers as well .Adrian was just an odd mix of both while mastering neither . He would be quick to tell you that , too .

Adrian mentioned that No.. in fact he has never actually set foot in the building, ever! But, when he was starting the vast majority of the guys he was wrestling against had been at least partially trained there and if you could not DO a move on them that you could "take on them", they were not going to LET you do a move on them, . You had to take something for they would give you anything and you had to earn their respect first. So you either got pretty close to as good really fast or you got eaten alive.
I remember watching a separate interview where he mentioned he separated the guy's shoulder in the first round of his first match and went to the back with a big smile all proud of himself asking the promoter when he was going to get a title shot LOL the promoter ripped him a new one, but did like his enthusiasm and his heart so he told Adrian he wanted him to get trained on how to work and actually wrestle, " no one's going to pay to see you if all your matches only last less than 2 minutes you fool!" so he needed to go to Johnny Kilroy’s Gym. He was told to ask for "Iron Jaw" Joe Murphy and Tony Scarlo with the message: "Teach me to die." They taught him wrestling and a lot of humility and pain as well.
So he was trained in catch wrestling by some fairly respectable names, but was not from the legendary Wigan snake pit. ( which for all its legendary status was a POS dump of a building that was basically made out of whatever the guys who originally built it could afford to buy and what scrap materials they could scrounge up to build it with)
To be fair, not everyone who did "train" in the snake pit would be necessarily better than Adrian either. Lots of people may have gone and "trained in the Wigan Snakepit" but just like how there's a lot of people who have "trained in Judo" under "Uncle Gene" Judo Gene LeBell over the last 60 plus years, there's only a couple dozen who are actually certified as black belts (Chuck Norris and Roddy Piper being two of the only about two dozen) by Gene LeBell personally. You got to logically assume the same that there is only a limited or select group of those people who would truly be considered "graduates" of the snake pit and trained primarily under and are/were for lack of a better term, acknowledged as "esteemed Snakepit alumni" by Billy Riley himself.
For every Billy Robinson or Karl gotch, there's probably 50 or 100 guys nobody has ever heard of or actually meant something to catch wrestling who had trained in the "Snakepit" over the years.
@@georgeelmerdenbrough6906 certainly, he has admitted in Britain at the time when he was wrestling that "I was a very good wrestler in a world of great wrestlers." He knew he was a smaller guy and average, so he knew he had to do something to stand out from the crowd.
Adrian's skill in comparison to the in ring skill level of the vast majority of American wrestlers at the time... Different story.
There were not a whole lot that were on/near his level. He mentioned he was actually kind of surprised at the overall level of talent compared to the skill guys guys needed to make it in Britain. I remember him joking that he thought to himself one time that Miss Linda probably was probably a better actual wrestler and could probably outwork about half the guys in the business back then in the USA as an in-ring performer.
What a sad thing to learn...Gino Odjick, Bobby Eaton and Adrian Street all gone in quick succession. Heroes all. Cerebral people.

One bad mother. Tough tough dude.Mick Foley on the Legends of Wrestling Roundtable when they were talking about tough guys he says since most people wouldn't think it but Adrian Street. He mentioned how they were hanging out one day and he has Adrian if he could show him a couple things cuz he knew about his catch wrestling background. Mick said now when he goes to a hospital and they ask him on a scale of 1 to 10 what the pain is I can no longer say 10 because the only time I felt that type of pain with Adrian Street that day. Mick " I got a better idea of where I stand in the greater scheme of things and I realize there are people out there you just do not want to mess with. And he wasn't even trying to hurt me as bad as he could because he actually liked me.

Jim, I live in Shreveport and Pizza King shut down many many years ago because they were dealing drugs, weed and cocaine from the restaurant and got busted by the ATF. Now pizza king is gone and George’s grill is gone and that was replaced by a new Centenary Fieldhouse and practice football field for their new Division 3 football team plus Brocato’s is now India’s Restaurant

I sneaked into to see Adrian Street and his Tag team partner Bobbie Barnes in my local Sports Centre as we used to call them in the UK. Stretford, Manchester. Less than half a mile from Man. Utd's football ground.
The main sports area was blocked off from the rest of the building just for the show.
My friend and I were 13/14 years old.
We went in, in our gym gear/football kits and then went through the barriers to get to see them.
We didn't get to stay... obviously we stood out from all the other fans dressed in normal clothing... we had shorts, and football tops. The security were laughing at us sat this trying to look as normal and innocent as possible. They said we could have stayed but all the seats were sold... there really was nowhere they could hide us. Ha ha.
