Triumph Rocket 3 Review. Is the worlds highest torque motorcycle for you? Cruiser or sports bike?

  • We review, at long last, the Triumph Rocket 3 motorbike.
This is the worlds most torquey production motorcycle! Is it too hot to handle or is it for you? We find out.
We look at the handling, brakes, acceleration, ride modes and find out what it is like to ride. Is it stable? Is it good in the corners? Is it big or small? How does it fit different rider sizes and heights? Is it too heavy?
Does it handle like a sports bike or a cruiser. Rake and Trail - we give you the correct info.
We tell you the mpg, fuel economy, and range on a full tank.
This beautiful, modern design may not be for everyone, but if you watch our videos, you will at least be able to make an informed decision.
A big thanks to Webbs Motorcycles of Peterborough for lending us their bike www.webbsmotor...

I bought one of these over a year ago, and it is an absolute beast. Zero to "oh God, help me!" in about 6 seconds. The lack of a fairing has permanently enlarged my nostrils to where I now have to sneeze into a bedsheet. Once I pick out the small birds from the other inhaled oddities, I'm good for another run. Corbin makes a proper fairing, seat and panniers for this bike at a cost of about $7K U.S. Just remember that the stop sign a mile ahead of you one moment will be behind you the next. Godspeed.

The newer models look a lot better engineered, but even quicker! I like the way you two keep it real, getting interrupted by planes, trains and automobiles (!) and the bike's number plate falling off periodically!

I loved mine until the engine began to bleed oil at around 5k miles, after a total brake failure and a TFT failure. The engine block was “porous” and it is still being fixed after 2 months in the shop. Torque rock, or whatever you want to call it, is caused because the crankshaft is in line with the bike. Most bikes the engine is perpendicular so the torque rock isn’t noticeable as it’s absorbed by the wheels. When the crank is parallel, newton says for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So when the crank spins up your noticing the torque, and there will be a force in the opposite direction, hence the bike wants to almost fall over. Any bike where the crank is parallel to the length of the bike does this. You can notice is on highway tractor trailers as well when they take off from a stop and the frame twists and one of the front wheels want to lift off the ground, though that’s a bit different but same principle.

Triumph has proven it and delivered a perfect blue print that shows that a new generation of a bike with tons of additional tech features still allows to sexy up in design and appearance. Gorgeous one. I rode it some days ago. It handles very nice, even hanging-off works on narrow mountain sloaps. Sadly, Ducati on the other hand has managed to completely destroy the unique and beautiful design of the Multistrada with the new V4 generation. I'd now any day pick the Rocket 3R over the new Multistrada.

I'd go slightly further than that and explain the physics, just a touch.
It's an inline 3 mounted front to back. When you blip it, the engine starts to spin one way and torque effect pushes physically back the other way.
It's basically the same reason that a helicopter has a tail rotor pushing in the opposite direction the main rotor is spinning.
You could smooth it out with a big, heavy counter-rotating balance shaft, like you would in a similarly mounted car engine.

The Rocket 3’s longitudinal engine gives it the characteristic rocking motion when revving the engine at a stop. Much like Moto Guzzi and BMW boxer engines, it’s the rotational force of the crankshaft/flywheel mass as it spins faster. Under way it’s not really noticeable for the average rider.

  • @MrAndrew1953

Engine reminds me of the Ariel Square 4. Bikes that comes to mind are the Yamaha VMax, the Ducati.. BMW R18. Torque reaction when you blip the throttle. Used to get that on my R80GS. I've read it had to be a shaft as no chain could handle the torque. Do the bars pull you forward? Might get something narrower and setback for more comfortable touring plus larger fairing. Footpegs set higher than the GT for better lean angle, less scraping. Have you reviewed the Ducati Demented(sic) or VMax? Just stick this bike in Rain or Road majority of the time to save your skin and licence.

So, not my thing altough i do love a triple banger.
The twitch to the left is a result of the mass of the rotating parts resisting the torque that makes it spin faster. Basically the mass is made to move faster than it wants too and the excess torque makes the bike twist around in stead of the running gear. (crank, driveshaft, flywheel, etc.)

Ten years ago, I rode the old Rocket lll Roadster and loved it. I'm sure I'd love this, and it's a lot lighter. I braced myself for a lead-weight when I pulled the Roadster off its side stand, but it was easy as the centre of gravity is so low. The fuel tank is too small on the new R lll.
I'd rather have a Goldwing Bagger.

I want this in my garage. My only worry is that it's too similar to my Ducati Diavel 1260 S. I would pop a windscreen on the Rocket 3 and use it as a comfortable longer distance bike. I'll check your channel to see if you've done a comparison to the Diavel. Old man you look like an SAS soldier. 😀 as a fellow middle aged man (I just hit 48),I appreciate your perspective. Got mine about two months ago. Done 2000+ km in the land down under. It is a wonderful machine. I come from a sports touring background (1989 ZX-10) and this bike has a similar feel to me with a little more relaxed attitude. Its easier to enjoy the view on the Rocket, or it could be that I'm gaining experience (because we all know bikers don't get old) and choose not to take the rocket into the stratosphere. I had doubt on the heat part which got cleared and the torque gradually picks up which is a bummer when you compare it to the diavel and harley davidson torque which is instantaneous. The reason why it has a torque ration to bleeping the throttle while in neutral same like Bmw Boxer or Moto Guzzi. It is because the crankshaft is mounted longitudinally. It is the torque counter reaction to sudden speed up to crankshaft while U blip the throttle . Grate video! Keep them coming! PS would You swap Your Heritage for the new Rocket 3 GT ? Or the modern retro is not your thing ? And all this torque and power is not being used in normal riding. I own the bike .. I have the R I have ridden around 6000km and 3000km of it on a long distance trip across Canada. The issues that I have encountered so far are the following:
The exhaust will melt anything that touches it and if you let it solidify on it after it cools down it’s almost impossible to get it off,
Until you heat the pipe up and find a way to wipe it off with something that won’t itself melt on.
The final drive has a breather tube that’s exposed to the atmosphere. So if the bike is hot or you use a pressure washer on it you will get water in the final drive. So
Special care is required when washing.
Heat is not an issue for me. Every single bike I have owned runs hot. My Panigale is insane. I have had Harleys, Yamaha, Ducati and Triumph and this is my favorite bike so far. I love motorcycles and of course I want a stable of them but this is a great compromise between a sports bike and a more comfortable standard motorcycle.
