Manchester to Doha with Qatar Airways and their Boeing 777 in Economy Class

- I had a BIG surprise when I stepped on board this Qatar Airways 777 from Manchester to Doha. Why? Well if I told you they'd recently inherited this aircraft from Virgin Australia, you may be able to work it out.
On this trip, I'll show you what turned out to be a pretty comfortable seat, along with the IFE, service, cabin all the usual features of the aircraft but with it being my first time with one of the Gulf carriers, I was interested to see how it would compare to, say, a typical transatlantic legacy carrier in terms of all the afore-mentioned features.
In addition to the flight, I probably spend about an hour trying to find my way out of Hamad International Airport too! Watch until the end for details on that!

I use to operate this aircraft when it was at VA. It’s so good to see our old girls operating once again! Thanks for the nostalgia especially with the business class bar on boarding.
Cheers Matt! Yep, all-in-all it was a decent flight and great to have the use of PE on the way down. I must admit though, the bar did look quite nice on boarding. Not for me this time but you should’ve seen the flight back (A380 business 😉)

Qatar offers the best flight experience. I liked their food. The plane is big and perfect. The crew are awesome
The food was certainly great coming back Victor (mind you I was in business!).
Great video Mark :) always enjoy seeing these oddities of aviation - I think I would’ve been a bit more disappointed had I got Virgin Australia’s old business class though!

On there A350-1000 the best economy seat is 16, it’s right behind there business class. It’s 2 4 2 configuration. They recently raised there prices. Used to be 93USD from DFW to DOH and now it’s 149.

Good video, interested to find out about the plane as I traveled back to Doha on at Christmas and was confused as it didn’t appear to be a part of the usual fleet. Not seen that business class configuration before. As a resident of Qatar, yes you are right not many arrivals usually all transfer passengers and unless to know where you are going the ground staff seem to assume everyone is transfer! I always follow the signs for baggage reclaim!
flew etihad to japan recently via abu dhabi from heathrow, although the flight from tokyo to abu dhabi was 12 hours which was brutal overall it was a brilliant service and flight, the food was the best ive had. will be flying with them again in june to bangkok

I quite enjoyed the airport in a chaotic kind of way! It was much easier on the way back though tbh!
I love a secret economy upgrade!
Always pays to check exact aircraft type and Seat Guru. Most of the time it just helps avoids the really bad seats but sometimes,like yourself, you hit the jackpot especially with a late change. My Parents did just that with Jet2 and ended up with huge legroom on a leased A330. The rear row on my Virgin A330-300 PE meant I could recline during the meal which was a nice touch. Keep up showing us these quirks. 👍
Totally agree. I did think it a bit odd when the configuration on Qatar’s seat map didn’t match any on Seat Guru. Obvious why now ! 👍
@@LetsMakeaTrip seatguru isn’t maintained any longer since they were acquired by tripadvisor, I’d recommend to check out alternatives such as seatmaestro or aerolopa
I will be flying this same aircraft next week and took the plunge to upgrade my seats to business class despite not being q-suite. The plane looks relatively new despite the age.

Another great, humorous video. Sounds decent (apart from the lavatory :)). This your favourite economy flight? If not, then what is it? Mine was an Etihad A320. Once again, fantastic video and can't wait for the next one!

I went with Qatar to Australia in 2016, friendliest crew I've ever experienced, though the 14 hours from Doha to Melbourne was pretty brutal.
Cheers Jon, yes the crew were pretty good tbf. I don’t envy you on that 14 hour flight but yep I reckon for most, Doha was just the halfway point of their journey. I’d really need to be in business for that kind of thing these days!!

Qatar airways i been on was quiet good but is a kind of bumpy at times but i went onece on board still very good experience well done to qatar😮

It seems like the inflight entertainment system was still the old Virgin Australia one just with the Oryx One wallpaper installed. The actual Oryx One system is quite impressive with a large selection of movies, tv shows, games etc. I believe these two ex Virgin Australia 777s along with 4 ex. Cathay Pacific 777s were brought in to cover for the grounded QR A350s due to their paint issues and Qatar's legal battle with Airbus. Now that the legal case has settled, I imagine these 5 777s will end up leaving the QR fleet towards the end of this year.
Yes I’m sure you’re right. I guess I got lucky really with this one because of the circumstances. Flying back with QR in business I did appreciate the full Oryx experience and yep, it was just slightly better!!

Very informative video! When I went on Etihads 777 many years ago, we had the same, it was so hot on board and the fact it doesn't have individual air vents made it for quite an unpleasant ride. Which I was quite disappointed with really.
Flying at dusk and night is my favourite, but doesn't make for good filming sadly ! 😅
Cheers Myles, interesting you found the cabin a bit stifling too. I agree with the filming point, it's not great is it but like you I love the colours outside the aircraft at this time of the day.
Great video mate! And you found the bear... Not accessible on arrival but as you say, who actually ever arrives at Doha rather than transiting??? Interested to see/hear what you thought of Doha itself...
Cheers Matt. Yep, it was very odd with (if I remember) one point airside of security to go back through the wrong way and even then I needed to check I was doing it right! All part of the fun I guess. Doha was interesting - definitely a ‘car is king’ place you quickly discover when trying to find somewhere to cross the road! Lot’s of construction, lots of money!
That's a great find there! Would love to fly on Emirates or Qatar first class one day as they are supposed to be absolutely amazing - just need the money first!

I'm a heathrow kinda guy, flown LHR nigh on a dozen times to usa/germany/thailand, i cant say i'm impressed with manchester airport or doha, qatar has had some bad reviews to, ive flown bbx birmingham/dubai/bkk with emirates once and it was a good expierience back in 2009, i will look up your return flight on the A380 now and see how that compares , cheers,.
Superb mate! And great spot with the seat. Bulkhead seats can be a risk with legroom but you got lucky. Qatar seem to still have some struggles with their fleet especially after their recent cancelled orders. I must say though I hate it when a flight is too hot, especially when there's just no escape from it. I'd go for a freezing cold flight any day, but maybe that's just me!
Cheers Steve, yep no bassinets deployed on this flight either (which is another risk isn’t it!). I don’t normally struggle with temperatures on aircraft tbh but this was noticeable. All-in-all though, not a bad flight but nothing compared to the flight back. Clue: I wasn’t flying in economy on that one! 😊👍

Am travelling from Manchester to Doha, can I carry a laptop bag as well as my 7kg cabin suitcase?
I have flown with Qatar in economy but sadly the last time was Christmas just gone and was not impressed buy the standard had fallen a bit, in the service of the meal service as you didn’t know what you were going to get till the crew got to your row, but I’ll fly with them again to hopefully see if it has improved 🤔🤞🤞🤞🤞

I had the same issue arriving in Doha airport. I think we should've stayed on the bus instead of getting of at the transit area, but I'm not sure.
Interesting. I didn't notice if anyone stayed on the bus or not. Good point.
Doha airport seems to have vastly improved since I was there last (2012).
Did they have the bear there then? I would imagine it's expanded quite a bit - a very busy place it seemed.

For the age of the aircraft, it looks to be relatively well kept
Cheers David, yep agree and it was clean. Like I said, I don’t think the crew were aware of the issues with the toilet and apart from that, not a bad flight at all really especially with landing the premium economy seat!

Cheers, I didn’t but that’s the BA silver tier thing. I just happened to look on the seat map a few days before, couldn’t find the right config for this Qatar 777 and I realise why now!

Difficult to say really John as I used a lot of avios. Hotels are relatively cheap though, they’ve even got a Premierinn in Doha.
Lol the toilet has no water because your pushing the plug release mate. The taps are automatic infrared sensor taps. The toilet paper is on a roll and the draw is for extras. The crew obv have no idea what they inherited.

Your feelings on those 777-300 not feeling quite right . Well I agree I think they’re loud and all the kudos for that big GE engine is misplaced . Much prefer any 787 or airbus A350-900 or 1000. Seem much quieter and smooth.
Never tried Qatar. My last long haul flight was a 11 hour journey between Beijing and Munich and was pretty brutal
Yep I'd struggle with anything over this length of flight in economy these days tbh but the seats certainly helped on this occasion.
Unfamiliar economy class to me on every 777 I have ever worked on QR flights

Looked fairly comfortable but I would have hated the stuffy air. Cannot believe they don't have hand sanitiser either, after all we have been through😂
I don’t think knew about it Sheila tbh. I’m sure they were as surprised as I was.
In some of your comments you seemed to be expecting a bit much seeings as you were in economy. For example, expecting water to be handed out on boarding. I have never seen this happen in economy, you always have to wait until the drink service. You also never get "glassware" in economy.
Looked a good vfm flight, with a great selection of food, as long as you like curry! My stomach would not cope with a curry on a flight! And your hour at the airport was productive ....... you found the bear! So, a trip worth making.
I did find the bear and I had some amazing food on the flight back (mind you that was in business!!). That'll be another video to come out at some point in the near future.
One gripe I have with Qatar is the small glasses of wine they pour instead of giving you a small bottle of wine they just pour into a little glass 🤷🏻♂️ feels cheap.

Here's a trip for you, fly to Portugal, airline your choice. Fly Air Portugal to Angola, from here Angola Airlines to Johannesburg. From here SAA or SA Airlinck to The Island of St Helena in the South Atlantic.
The reason the IFE is crap is because it's not the full Oyrx One IFE system. It looks like they've bodged their branding onto the aircrafts existing IFE system, or whatever they could get to work!

More ups and downs with them I think but compared to their business class product, nothing that special.
Is there a specific zone for Qatar Airways? The check in queues seem quite confusing😂 😅 it seems confusing on like how to get in the queue
I didn’t have a problem myself though I have OneWorld status so had the fast track thing to help. There was someone there to ask though if that helps.
