What REALLY Happens to Inflight Blankets? How Airlines Work Part 1

  • Have you ever wondered what happens once all the passengers disembark after a long haul flight? What happens to the aircraft? How do they prepare for the next flight and who does all the dishes? And what happens to the used blankets between flights? Let's find out together!
I've been given exclusive behind the scenes access at Qatar Airways to see exactly what makes them tick. I want to know the secrets behind Qatar Airways' success and what makes them one of the world's leading and fastest growing airlines.
First on my list was finding out what happens between flights. In this instance between a 14 hour long-haul flight from Seattle to Doha and a 13 hour long haul flight to Adelaide.
In never-seen-before footage I was allowed onboard the aircraft after all the passengers had left and was there when the cleaning and catering crews sprung into action. Their first task was to completely de-Seattle the aircraft by removing all the used meal carts, pillows, blankets, mattresses and rubbish. The aircraft is then thoroughly cleaned before it is prepared for its next flight, in this case another long-haul leg to Adelaide.
Re-stocking for Adelaide begins with the arrival of a fleet of trucks - carrying 120 fully stocked carts as well as bags and bags of blankets, pillow cases and amenity kits.
With the new crew boarding an hour before the Adelaide flight was due to depart it was time for me to find out who was doing the dishes.
Again I was given exclusive access to how the entire operation of de-stocking and re-stocking an aircraft goes. The Qatar Aircraft Catering Company's operational centre is the largest single building catering unit in the world at 69,000sq metres. Not only does it produce over 170,000 meals per day it also processes 7000-8000 dirty carts and does 1.5 million dishes. Every single day.
On top of that it processes 40 tons of laundry, including 100,000 blankets per day.
The operation is mind boggling and needs to be seen to believed. Luckily Qatar Airways gave me, and my camera, a full-access pass and I was able to see every step of the process. I now understand why Qatar Airways wins so many awards and have a far greater appreciation of exactly how much work and how many people are involved in making these flights possible.
To all the unseen heroes working behind the scenes and to everybody at Qatar Airways who helped make this video possible a massive thank you from me and every other passenger.
This it Part 1 of my Qatar Airways Behind the Scenes video series. Other episodes will feature their Cargo Operations, the Crew Terminal and the super secretive Integrated Operations Centre.
If you haven't subscribed yet please consider doing so because these videos will be equally amazing.
Thanks for watching and as always happy travels
    Cheers
    Dennis

So nostalgic ! I worked for QR as cabin crew for 5 years and seeing that walk to the bus at the end of the flight is so relaxing.
One thing I always wondered how passengers dare to throw garbage on the ground and under the seats, people do not do that even in the streets so imagine in a shared environment. You make those poor cleaners bending to clean your trash left in some very inaccessible areas. Same goes for blankets, they find them nicely arranged on their seat and they leave them stuck under the seat.
Many cleaners in Qatar get terminated just because they forgot to clean some invisible mess left by some passengers and QR policy has no mercy.
Fly safe and yes you paid for a ticket but please behave and be civilised.

In 2021, when Qantas let go of their almost 2k ground staff, my wife was the last ground crew who left, made sure her team and last plane was looked after. She is one of the hardest worker I know because of her hard work, we were able to enjoy travel perks and have seen the world. ❤

@@NafisaLondon That doesn't have to do with being a real man, but is has to do with choices, culture and circumstances. My mom also worked for the luxury things like our boat and for the holidays. Without my mothers job we shouldn't have a boat and cheaper holidays. It is very normal to both earn money in many countries. Nowadays it is in the Netherlands not anymore for luxury but really neccesary that couples both have a job in order to be able to buy a house.

Wow - what an opportunity, they really rolled out the red carpet for you! You can also tell by the way they talked about the process, that some of them are so proud of what they’re doing too. It’s a rare chance for people to see exactly how much goes into prepping for a flight and I think if more people saw this process, they’d be more appreciative and respectful of the staff and the ticket in their hand! I couldn’t believe how many people were on board the flight once it was deplaned - all the cleaners, engineers, stock handlers….. unless someone has worked in a confined space, they will never be able to appreciate just how much skill and fine tuning it takes for all those people to be able to work in sync and like clockwork. That’s some expert level organisation right there!
Thanks for giving us a fascinating insight. It’s so cool to see the part that is usually kept behind closed doors. So many hard working staff. Was great to hear about the sustainability projects too. I like it when I hear that airlines donate their unused goods etc to charities and people in need. I’ve never flown with Qatar Airways before, but I hope to do so one day.

THANK YOU for highlighting the catering crews!!! They were always the hardest working, most reliable staff I worked with at AUH and deserved soooooooo much more recognition and love than they ever got. Due to mechanical failure, we had to transfer and completely loaded A380 once--only took catering 10 min to unload the current plane, drive down two gates, and get it all reloaded in the working aircraft. Amazing memories with great guys.

I don't recall many details (we had to don certain gear, and go through some sort of cleansing process) but I do recall one airline (I think it was Etihad) required it's First Class cutlery to be hand polished rather than just machine-done like all the others, so there was a person solely dedicated to doing this. Such logistics going on behind the scenes. Oh, and we had a lunch (on the ground) provided by SATS that far exceeded in quality anything you would eat in the sky.

You just took me back to the 80's when I used to work for Marriott Corp. Catering at IAD. Our building wasn't as big but we were always on a strict time schedule and it was very stressful if something didn't go correctly. I'd guide the driver up to the plane then we catered the plane just like you showed and we even catered an Aeroflot one time and I got to see the BA's Concorde jet take off! For me, since I love airplanes it was the perfect job. Thank you for showing how a bigger operation works and bringing back good memories! I've subbed to your channel because you definitely deserve more subscribers!

I have always wondered what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to unloading and reloading the airplanes. Thanks for sharing this video. Can’t wait to fly with Qatar this year.😊

Thank goodness for these videos, because I’m flying Qatar for the first time ever this year from Brisbane to London. I didn’t know a lot about this airline prior to booking and your videos have been very educational. Thank you! 👍🏻🇦🇺

Brings back so many happy memories working at British Airways Catering Centre at London Gatwick. It is a fascinating and complex organisation and you either love it or hate it, because it is so continuous and never ending. Great report Dennis and an eye opener for passengers.

Thanks Dennis, I’m from Adelaide too. Very interesting videos. They set the standard for the rest of the world. Some of the airlines I’ve flown on could learn from them!

Oh wow. that was really interesting! What a marathon effort to get everything washed, dried, folded, etc, and back on to the right plane. I have always wanted to know how they cleaned everything after a flight, now I know! Much appreciation to everyone involved! Many thanks for a great informative video - enjoy your next flight!!

Hi Dennis, what a great video this is. So many things we take for granted have been explained. You must have pulled some strings to get access to their business. Great job!
