[Ep 3] 2CV to Croatia: Germany (briefly), more Netherlands

  • I've been bouncing around the borders of The Netherlands, with a foray across into Germany, a castle and a great many classic cars - some of them eye-wateringly valuable. I also rode a bike and had a minor fail-to-proceed with Elly the 2CV...

Ian, some unsolicited advice - Don't fall into the trap of taking too much notice of negative comments. I've seen channels focus way too much on a tiny number of negative comments, ignoring the hundreds and hundreds (sometimes thousands) of positive ones. Constructive criticism is good to listen to and all of us can learn a thing or two, but you're always, ALWAYS going to get moaners and negative people no matter what you do.
You're doing absolutely fine. I believe people come to your channel because they love your approach to making videos. They appreciate the sharp and welcome contrast you offer compared to the countless boring car review channels out there that might slickly record and edit their videos of exotic machinery in five camera angles of 8K Ultra or whatever, but are also great for combating insomnia.

Seriously, your videos are so much more engaging than the travel shows broadcast on television with their irritating format and violin plucking music. That garage was a real find and yes the early 80's Alfa Giulietta was perfect. Like you, I have always wanted one. A white one powered by a 1.6 twin cam complete with steel wheels please.

    • @frazzleface753

Violin plucking music lol. You hit the nail on the head there. God, I hate that violin music. Especially the type you always get on documentaries where it's two notes back and forth quickly over and over. Arrrgh!

The white deposits are more than likely due to ethanol. It's changed the way to read plugs, and I believe that Europe has a higher concentration than us. Great content. Lovely places and epic 2CV cruising. Awesome stuff!

How about a camping gaz stove...? Stick it in the boot...cook up a stew from a can...maybe 1.50 €....carry a few tea bags and a chunk of cake...I always carry a pack of stuff...stopping by the roadside is almost better ...20€ for pizza and a drink...crazy...great video thank you and I'm really sorry about the nasty messages you receive...unnecessary and not particularly kind...

I recently bought a camping gas cooker. It's really small and makes lovely tea. You do need decent tea bags. Cooking is possible on it and I've cooked bacon on it for bacon sambos but I'm no chef. A freezer bag is handy to have aswell.

I agree, I like the idea of Cooking By a river or lake or similar. I would fill the car with Useful items.
Even Take a large estate car & Inflatable Mattress & Sleeping Bag. Pull up somewhere & sleep for a couple of hours.
It must be a Nightmare Travelling that distance in a 2 CV. No Chance of Sleeping in that car.
A Classic Estate of course. Would be Good.
It's nice just to park up & make a Coffee.
I would still use Hotels & B&B 's for a good long sleep.
      & Restaurants for Real Meals.
Maybe a small van with 6ft Rear Floor to sleep on. ?
Then Find a remote place & Camp in the Vehicle an odd night. Or in A busy city location. Where you won't get Noticed.
      NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING !!
Err ? Drive at night & Sleep Early Mornings to miss Rush hour traffic, & Late Afternoons at Rush hour.
Keep Moving. OR Pull a wire off & say waiting for a tow Truck & Fell asleep Waiting. ( you have not Rang for one )
Rattle some spanners under the bonnet & BINGO ! it works Now !! it was a loose wire .
OR , Sat Nav Broken, & can't find the Hotel. Oh sorry i was so tired i forgot to switch the SAT NAV on No Wonder the screen is Blank.
There Is No Law that Says you Can't be a Dozy Sod. & get lost in a foreign country.
Spell the Hotel Name Incorrectly. Mix up the postcode numbers. Read it upside down in the dark ?

Definitely pack a stove and a small box of cooking gear. Well worth it and you can have a cup of tea or coffee where and when you want, and save money.
I saved about 25 euro a day on coffee shops last time I drove abroad.

Everywhere looks so nice and tranquil, clean and tidy looking. I really did enjoy all the places you showed us in this film. I can't help but think our country is so backward in lots of ways compared to Europe. I'm really envious of your journey so far. Ref: to camera angles. I think some people expect a full 20th Century Fox Production and NOT the results of an amateur On-the-Go film maker. lol. Do you ever feel that created a monster with Hub Nut? You made a rod for your own back...? I had to jack it in myself, it got too much. More wants more and so on... Brilliant film as always. I love your camera angles and general style of film making. No complaints my end. Looking forward to the next one already. :-)

    Hey Ian,
Just because you were talking about how you like to improve the quality of your videos, I have an idea how you can make the shots where the cam is pointed at you while driving look more professional.
You could get a wide angle lens for your Canon, and put the camera on a high place, such as under the rear view mirror, while pointing it slightly downwards. This way you get no overexposure from the light and everything, including yourself, would be in the shot. Those lenses can probably be bought 2nd handed. Just an idea ;)
I love your travelling videos, it always makes me feel like I'm travelling along, which is great because I can't go on holiday til september!
    Good luck and safe travels

I like cycling but my I have a mountain bicycle. This copes well with british roads and has front suspension and disc brakes. It is good to see that you are having good adventures and reminds me when, about 5 years ago, I had to spend about 4 weeks in bed and breakfast between house moves because the old house was sold before I could move into my present house. I visited various towns and museums within reasonably easy driving distance during this period.

Once again, a superbly interesting video Ian. I had the pleasure of working in the Netherlands for two years and it truly is a lovely country. Also came across similar and very impressive musical church clocks in several towns. They most certainly have the cycling arrangements so much better, where I worked, the morning school bike rush was like the Tour De France going past. No school run traffic congestion there, and no overweight children!

The Vanden Plas Princess and Bristol brought back memories - my Dad owned both models though his VP was a 3 litre mark 2 so had the BMC C series engine. It was quick and quiet though. He had 2 Bristols overt the years, one identical to the car in the video, even down to the colour scheme. It was bloody rapid!!

14:44 Not 100% sure about the Netherlands, but traffic coming in from your right gets priority on unmarked or equal-priority junctions in most of Europe. It's not first come first served like it is in the UK and you can't rely on stop or give way signs. Best watch out for that, especially in residential areas.

Good idea to steal from Noraly! The way she edits her vids is good - length, pacing, and content rhythm. The other thing, which people probably don't notice, but contributes hugely, is the background music she chooses. Nothing stopping you from adopting her style for your vids for your trip to Croatia and later NZ. 10-12 minutes at a time for an upload is very watchable.

For a Dutchman it was quite a shock for me to see how dangerous cycling is in the UK. I even saw cyclists on a dual carriageway with traffic flying past at 60 mph. Unthinkable here! And helmets are only mandatory on speed pedelecs capable of doing 30-ish mph.

    • @Zeem4
      @Zeem4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@dukeburger5 There are plenty of hilly parts of the world with high levels of bicycle use. The problem in the UK is that it's been entrenched in people's minds for decades that important, attractive and successful people drive cars, and people who ride bicycles are poverty-stricken subhumans who "don't pay their way". I enjoy cycling and driving (although not at the same time), but it's a shame that I can't just do either with equal convenience.

@@Zeem4 It's people lower down the food chain who react to bicycles negatively. Those whose sense of self is wrapped up in their vehicle, as well as most of their cash. Someone pedalling into their brittle world on a bike does all kinds of weird stuff to their ego. My two penn'oth says cars are past their sell by date in cities and large towns. Just too much grief for all concerned.

HubNut Good luck to you, I’ve always been anti making money on youtube, I have a channel and it’s hobby sort of thing, if I ever get to the stage where I can make money from it, I will donate it to a charity. But your work/hobby is an expensive one, so in your position especially these road trip/tour ones it’s good that people do donate. I watch and support you with a thumbs up (hope that’s good enough🤣🤣) anyway loving the videos I hope I can get organised to do a Euro trip one day, maybe in my defender. Anyway keep up the good work🙂👍

Fantastic video, Ian....really feels like we're there with you. Those two garages...wow! What an amazing selection of cars! And I completely agree with you on the "speaking the lingo" bit.....I'm always embarrassed how little I know, and how well our (usually Belgian) hosts speak English. The French can speak English but pretend not to do so just to be A holes. Best is to speak correct French but in an awful accent. A bit like Ted Heath used to. At the time I thought he did it to get back at them but now I realise he genuinely had an awful accent. Classic.

Love those cars in that showroom. My dad had an Alfa Romeo Sprint like that white one. He always said it was the rarer Giulia Sprint, not a Giulietta Sprint. Ours was dark blue, but dad maintained it himself and it was painted and welded regularly, so it was dark blue with red oxide and grey primer paint patches. Also, the chrome bumpers were more rust than chrome! Me, my brother and sister, used to sit on the little seat in the back when we were small. Many fond memories of trips and holidays in that car. He sold it to a local chap who restored it and still owns it, although it's now red. Photos here. www.flickr.com/photos/ragtag04/albums/72157630904849358/ Dad also had a rusty silver one for spares. He later owned an Alfa Romeo 1750 saloon and a 1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta 1.8 saloon in factory purple! Grandpa had a 1950s Bentley he used to tow a caravan with on holidays! No wonder I'm such a petrolhead! : )
