In reality, these regions are traditionally Cossack lands, where many older residents still speak Ukrainian. The local population isn't resisting Ukrainian forces because, ethnically, they are Ukrainians too. There's no underground resistance or partisan movement against the Ukrainians in these areas, which indeed makes them "one people"-just not in the way Putin envisioned. If Ukraine were to reclaim all of its traditional lands, Ukraine's size would only increase.
