Day trip from Kuala Lumpur - Only locals know! Pulau Ketam (Crab Island), Klang, Selangor, Malaysia

  • One of our favorite day trips from KL! A floating, fishing village for specializing in seafood and a unique culture. If you are visiting Malaysia, this place is a must see.
    We took the KTM to Port Klang, hopped on a ferry and were in Pulau Ketam from KL in under 2.5 hours. We saw temples, talked with locals, ate amazing crab, and did it all for a fair price and without a car.

    Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is not a proper island per say. It is essentially a vast array of houses and other buildings, connected by walkways, all on stilts on top of a huge swamp . The best vlog and description of Pulau Ketam probably was made by Doughlas of "The Cycling Canadian" channel. Here is the link;

    cleanliness is something related to attitude and knowledge.
    thank you to the government, for ensuring that education is affordable for all Malaysians. means all Malaysians are knowledgeable citizens. It is difficult to find illiterate Malaysians!
    Just a little change needs to be improved, which is attitude! You can see, selfishness results in the destruction of nature. Some of them don't care about the rubbish dirty surroundings, the important thing is their house has no rubbish and clean. usually, this type of people will condemn others for excuses, like saying it's their neighbor's garbage or it's the government's job to clean it up! good attitude starts from ourself. let's sincerely do something good, do it for the name of your GOD what your believe. later on, good things or results will back to you. Please do not racist and cauvinist by condemned a community, races, religion or something like that. Because, basically we are same species "HUMAN". A special greatest species created by ALMIGHTY GOD than other species.

    When I was younger, illegal Indonesian immigrants would say that they were from Pulau Ketam if they were caught and apparently because it couldn't be verified, the police would just let them go. Don't know if that's still the case now. Also, you can use the crab's own pincers to pull out its flesh. It's like using your hated enemy's own hands as a bludgeoning weapon to beat him down.

Popular for its seafood and friendly islanders. Most of the chinese villagers/islanders there are from the Hai-Lam descendant clan but sadly the younger generations have all but mostly moved out to Klang and/or nearby cities for education or job opportunities. Pulau Ketam reminds me of the outlying fishing villages of Hong Kong, quiet relaxed enclaves that are in contrast to the hustle & bustle of the noisy, crowded metro cities, and yes, the aesthetics are spoiled by the stink and sight of garbage in the water and on land. Wish this weren't so.

    those houses on stilts like Penang are technicallu illegal but are tolerated due to influcnece by chinese triads/associations and malaysian chinese politicians....but thee dont get municipilatiy services its a reason pulau ketam is a rubbish disaster..they have occasional large cleanup by NGOs but of course the rubbish accumulates later.
    Interestingly its the same situation as Batu Caves .the tempke is illegal and dont get City Hall services like garbage collection but is tolerated due to political pragmatism

    • @hijazzains
      @hijazzains 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      to clarify all natural caves belong to the state and federal govt ...so any structure in them are illegal. But indian and chinese migrants in early 20th century built settlements and temple inside them...so its a sensitive issue to just demolish them so they are are just allowed like Batu Caves and the Buddhist temple caves in Ipoh.. same with the settlements above water like P.Ketam and Penang kongsi villages...they are illegal but are grey areas(you can live in them but dont get govt services) and may survive for long if they become a large enough community that can get help get a triad/political patron that gives them bargaining power against the authorities. These settlements are now rare as the migrants are naturalized. P. Ketam and the Penang kongsi are the few that survived..some say they are transit points for drug trade by the South East Asian Chinese triads in Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. P.Ketam and Penang kongsi are near the biggest ports in Malaysia so it makes sense .
      In Sabah these floating illegal settlements are common and home to a large population of stateless Indonesian/Filipino in Sabah who cant live on land legally. Occasionally they get into conflict with local Malaysian and authorities and youd hear occasional news of these floating villages torched to evict them futher away from lMalaysian towns as these settelements are considered ghettos for criminals. Due to Sabah bordering poor regions of Indonesia and conflict prone South Phillioine, this wont be going away for a long time

    If you guys ever visit Sabah we have this softshell crab which is deepfried but the best thing is you can eat it with the shell haha dont need to dig into the meat. Honestly I myself as a local love eating crab but having to dig for the meat is tiresome and took me years to master it and I still require some form of tool like a toothpick to be able to really get all the meat out.
