Wow!! The transformation you have made on the property is Amazing! Great videos and tips!
One hint, shake your jug after adding the salt but BEFORE adding the detergent. Shake gently again after adding detergent. Then you won't have as much foaming.
And add the salt first, then you can use the vinegar to rinse the salt down off the sprayer's built-in funnel.
You love watching people shake their jugs, don’t you?
Great tip!
Pro tip - Pour the vinegar and salt into a bucket and make sure the salt is totally dissolved before pouring it into your sprayer. Then add the liquid detergent to the sprayer. After you’ve sprayed the weeds, make sure to thoroughly clean out your sprayer and nozzle with clean water. I’ve been using this for years and it’s the best!
Pressurizing before mixing the detergent will also help reduce foaming.
Pro tip: if you don’t use all of it at once, remove the pump from the sprayer, or make sure the bottom of the pump where the seals are is out of the liquid. The acidity of the vinegar will mess with the rubber seals.

We've tried a zillion of these DIY formulas, and what we've stuck with is buying strong vinegar (usually 30%) and watering it down to 10-12%. We use inexpensive spray bottles rather than a pump sprayer, but I'd use it in a cheap pump sprayer. The vinegar does eventually ruin the seals even if you rinse it out. But salt will ruin a sprayer much faster, in our experience, even if you clean the thing twice after every use.
The 10-12% vinegar kills almost every weed it touches, and you don't have to saturate them so severely. Most stuff is wilted in 24 hours. It does kill the roots of most things, and the weeds don't come back during the same season. I see a lot of people saying they'll regrow in a couple of weeks, but that has not been our experience. A few really tough weeds will need a couple of applications.
Alternatively, after you spray the vinegar, spray the same plant with plain laundry bleach or with hydrogen peroxide. Do NOT mix these chemicals beforehand, and don't, what, get down and sniff the plant. You will be creating a small amount of dangerous poisons, although they won't last long. Two rounds of vinegar will usually kill small poison ivy plants, though, and one will burn the leaves off of Virginia creeper. If you're working around plants you want to keep, put some vinegar in a dish and use a paintbrush to 'paint' it onto the weeds, leaves and stems.
If you don't overdo it, you won't seriously or lastingly alter the pH of the soil, and, for instance, grass should be able to grow in the same spot you sprayed as soon as it rains or you hose the area down. The vinegar is neutralized pretty fast. Bleach breaks down pretty quickly, and peroxide even faster. Salt will linger, in our experience, and tend to keep the area dead for weeks. If the vinegar isn't working, you may have diluted it too much. Read the warnings on high-strength vinegar, though. It'll burn skin, eyes, your nose and lungs, etc. Still safer than a lot of commercial weed killers, but safety first.
Agree- grocery store vinegar is not strong enough for anything but the most fragile weeds. It may kill the top, but not the roots.
P
How do you water it down to 10-12%?
@@user-dx5cv9og9hAdd 2 parts water to one part vinegar. Now you have a solution that is 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water. Multiplying the 0.30 (30%) vinegar by 1/3 = 0.10 or 10% vinegar.
Not only burn, it could permanently blind you. I’ll stick to my regular weed b gon. Spot spraying isn’t going to hurt anything, except for the weeds.
A lot of weeds are annuals , so just getting them before they go to seed is super helpful. On disturbed soils you will see weeds take hold, but after preventing them going to seed for a few years (and possibly seeding with something desire able). You will likely get things under control. Keep in mind, There may be about 3 years worth of seeds in the soil. Also some weed seeds will germinate several times per season. Main things is don't let them go to seed.
You don't need the vinegar, just salt alone (with detergent) will do it. Dissolve 360g of salt in one litre of hot water. Add an egg-cupful of detergent...that's it. Don't shake the bottle, just swirl it. Spray onto leaves - dead in two hours. It struggles on ivy, but kills almost everything else.
From a professional gardener in England.
Will it harm the soil in garden beds?
@@betarugula8886Yes
What is an "egg-cupful"?
Can washing up liquid be used?
Started my home care journey recently and I can’t express how much your videos have helped me and my understanding for various topics. Glad to see you are continuing to post!
I'm about to give this a try, April 22, 2024, someone give me a like in about a month or so, I wanna see if it worked 😉😊
How’d it go?
I’m doing it today. May 18th 2024
Well???
Update?
Don’t bother making your own, contrary to online belief it’s not as good, you save $2-3 but you still have weeds!! Buy it follow instructions and you will be better off!!
I just used this formula ( I litre of vinegar and 3 tablespoons each of table salt and dish soap mixed into a spray bottle) on the weeds in my patio and driveway and achieved the same results as you did. Totally satisfying and I will be keeping a bottle of this mixture on hand as part of my regular garden clean up kit. I didn't even have to go and buy anything as this formula uses ingredients that are just regular household items always on hand.
Thank you for sharing your results. I just tried this on my flower beds this morning. Your property is beautiful!
Here's the fourth ingredient to increase effectiveness. First, mow or weed whack as low as possible. Then wait several days until an inch or two regrowth is seen. THEN spray. This will weaken the plant and cause it to use up carbohydrates from the roots. Results will be even better.
Thank you for finally making this video. Your influence is far-reaching, and the less roundup used and leaching into our waterways, the better.
And for BONUS points, if you leave the dish soap out you can use it on your fries.
Used a similar mix on clover in a mulch bed and it never came back. I like this mix.
While this does kill the plants temporarily, it doesn’t actually kill the roots, it just burns the foliage. Also, if you use it a lot, due to the acidity of the vinegar you can alter the pH of your soil which can affect other established plants.
Definitely killed most of the targeted weeds in my yard and sidewalks. Admittedly for some I did lightly spray a second time.
@@dannywitz yes, but how long before the weeds were back.
Agreed. This is just burning the leaves. It gives a very quick result, but it grows back pretty quickly.
I've tried this method and was impressed at first, until they kept coming back. Roundup is slower to see an effect, but much more effective in the long-term.
@@G5rryagreed, this stuff didn’t grow a sixth finger on either of my kid’s hands. Garbage.
I think the key point here is that you need to use it enough to alter the pH of the soil in order to prevent weeds from regrowing. That means that it works best in areas where you don't want anything to grow like cracks in a driveway. It's not something I would use in the yard but it's very effective for specific uses as long as you're generous with the application
If I only had a lawn like that ! I am definitely going to try this on the weeds. Thanks.
Man this guy is a lifesaver. Im definitely gonna try this out as i hate chemicals so much
I literally just bought salt and vinegar the other day to try this recipe before I saw this video. Thank you for the video!
This worked like a charm! The weeds started browning in 5-7 hours and we’re completely dead the next day!
love it! thanks, i'll give it a try. your lawn looks amazing
Yes I will for sure use this. A few thorns is growing amongst the grass. Thanks
I tried this with the industrial strength of 45% vinegar. It took all of 5 minutes before the weeds turned pale yellow. The vinegar is pricey, and I'll most likely stick with the 5% in the future. A word of caution with the 45%...wear a respirator or at least double mask. Should the wind blows back any of the mist and you breathe it in, it's not a pleasant experience 😅.
I was thinking about using 30% vinegar, maybe I should rethink that idea.
@@bz3248 I would get higher than 5% strength and dilute it down to 15-20%. I tried 5% and it only temporarily burned the weeds.
But it's not toxic like Roundup, which is banned in the EU and Cali and Co ..
Wow. The best I've seen so far! Thank you so much!
I use this same mixture and get the same results. Very pleased with it
Your Domain is absolutely beautiful. And thank you for the info.
Been using this recipe on the poison ivy on my property for a couple years. Works great!
Boiling hot water works a treat
You have an absolutely beautiful home and land. I'm praying that one day I can have a home like that.
Yep, been using this formula for years!
Your yard looks great! I also have a stone area, where weeds and grass have taken root in some areas, and tbh, I wasn't sure how to tackle this. I was going to buy a torch this spring, and still might because of the grass. At least you are giving me another option, so thank you!
Thanks for the info. What a lovely property you have 🤩
Honestly i was just at awe with the house.
Thank you for this video as well
VERY interesting information. Glad I’ve found this video on TH-cam.
I have used vinegar to contain a spreading ginger . I didn't want to kill the plants , just the new shoots outside the bed. It did work to a degree ,but it was constant. So I resorted to weed matting which worked better. Hand weeding or a longhandled weed chipper is all you can do if you don't want to use glyphosate, which is harmless and works well. All we have to worry about is its overuse and evolving weeds with resistance
I use this, it's okay. I call it "weed discourager". Doesn't last long if there's lots of rain. Roundup etc. worked much better but I gave that up to get away from the harsh chemicals.
You bring up a great point. I spray this in areas that I don't want to have to mow, but I also don't want to turn to dirt or mud. Things die to the point where you don't have to mow too much, but they don't get nuked either. I have a long strip of chainlink that I use this on. I've never had to replant any grass in that area so I know it's not killing anything, but it does prevent me from having to do any weedwacking along the fence for most of the season. A perfect balance in my opinion.
Even Roundup kills the tops for about 2-3 weeks, and then weeds come back from the roots.
What a beautiful piece of property.
I've been using this for 2 years now, game changer
Anything without Glyphosate is always a plus for Gardeners. 🌱
But salt will kill the grass in the future
Hi, Great mix. I shall definitely be trying your week killing solution. Cheers, Terry from the UK 🇬🇧
Hi there, thanks for the great video. Do you have any formula for a selective version that could be used on lawns. Thanks in advance for your help
Where I live you can buy 12% and even 24% white spirit vinegar for food use (designed to be diluted). I've used that stuff - even if you just pour it neat over weeds, the weeds are goners. I don't think the salt is really necessary. I had a shaded bit of pavement that was covered in moss - there I just mixed vinegar, water to dilute slightly and a touch of dish soap and absolutely soaked that wet moss in it. It penetrated perfectly and 2 days later it was stone dead and power washing it off was effortless, the dead moss doesn't grip the asphalt the way live moss does. The issue is that if there's acid left on the surface and it starts to rain, the acidic water can get washed onto the grass or similar, the edge of my lawn next to that bit of pavement got singed a bit around the edges. Worth it, but it's something to keep in mind, the product might not stay put.
Tried this myself and can confirm that it works.
Been there, done that. Yes, this will work, but you need to completely and thoroughly wash our whatever sprayer you use. The vinegar will totally destroy most (all) sprayers if you leave it sitting in the sprayer. Repeat: DO NOT STORE THE SOLUTION IN THE SPRAYER. It will destroy it.
And salt will destroy any metal parts of the sprayer.
Don't know how effective it will be against weeds in this area but I do like the inexpensive cost and the safety of not using harmful chemicals.
This thing also works well on ground elder, at least I used it on young plants. Never grew back so far.
Just did this around my fence line, even lightly sprayed trying to be conservative and the results were awesome! It even rained later the same night after I'd sprayed the weeds, two days later and %80 of the weeds and grass along the fence were dry and crispy.
That was great thanks again brother
You are by far one of the very best at making informational videos for us. Easy, very enjoyable to listen to. Never clickbait & above all ‘ALWAYS RIGHT TO THE POINT OF THE VIDEO’ Thank you from all of us, Sir!!
I used rinse aid as surfactant, it did very well.
My neighbor has said he's gonna do this for a while. I'm a painter and have a few gallons of vinegar around that I used to use for deck cleaning. Now I have a better use for them.
This makes the greens/leafs wither, but the root system survives and most weeds will sprout and come back. It is a temporary effect.
If repeated for a long time, it might emaciate and thus kill the weeds. But it is a tedious process with no guarantees.
Vinegar affects the soil, making it more acidic, so be careful with where you use it.
Roundup/glyphosate have its uses.
I've tried this in the past. I found that it killed the top of the plant, but not necessarily the roots. So the weeds came back in a month or 2 in the exact same location.
That’s exactly the same action as the Monsanto crap.
Yes, true, but when you've made three applications, the root is deprived of energy, and dies. Use salt alone - no need of vinegar, and just spray the leaves.
For anything in the lawn do you still recommend Tenacity?
A lot of golf courses here are moving to salt-tolerant paspalum turf and weeding with pure salt or high salinity solutions like this.
Amazing video i needed a cheap way to kill weeds in my backyard because my backyard is kind of big
WoW! THANK SO SO MUCH 👏🏽👏🏽
The nice thing is the remaining solution can be kept for a long time. However, would keep it away from anything vinegar can disolve like caulking, spray foam, etc. Does not kill weeds with long or large root structures, but should burn away their leaves. Also do not spray on grass you want to keep.
Tip: use industrial strength vinegar (found in most big box stores). it’s a bit more expensive but works much faster.
Thanks to Biden/Kamala's inflation, that same mix is now $26.
I just saw the vinegar you mentioned at HD, it was right at the entrance- I'll go back and get some, I have poison ivy, I hope it'll kill it
I need to try this
By a bit more expensive you mean 10x. 30% vinegar can go for as much as 30 bucks a gallon.
@@kladewilson598 Yes indeed, it's quite pricy, I ended up just pulling it with gloves and plastic bags
Acetic acid is a contact herbicide and will lead to regrowth. It’s also weird that people call vinegar “natural.” By the same definition, pure arsenic and crude oil are “natural” weed killers as well.
Certain things accumulate in plants, humans, and soil. Oil and arsenic are known to accumulate and cause health issues vinegar isn't going to accumulate in your bloodstream or kill you slowly over time.
Beautiful yard
Definitely trying this...
Definitely I'm going to try this i need to get a pump because I get a lot of weeds and the sun will have to be shining thanks I will let you know how it works. Thanks again
Beautiful home.
Hey Silver! My order of Tenacity just arrived! It’s getting into lawn care season in southern PA so I’m going to dethatch aerate and overseed this weekend. Should I apply Tenacity now or wait till after I do the renovation work?
I just bought to 30% vinegar. Thanks for the new recipe.
I use spectracide concentrate. Think I will stick with it. The location was beautiful!
Great information!
Funny I did this a week ago. Costco had the best price on vinegar, misc dish soap but I had Epsom salt that I had no need for. It worked great! I found that Lowe’s had the best deal and a better design on their 2 gallon sprayer. Note you want to get a bigger sprayer than you need for more compressed air space.
Ryobi has a sprayer that frequently goes on sale for under a hundred bucks. Totally worth the cost of admission to not have to pump the sprayers a thousand times over the summer.
Epson salt is the wrong kind for this. It actually acts as a fertilizer and is good for the garden. You need kitchen salt NaCl...or rock salt.
Thanks! Ill try this liberally.
Nice tip SS. I like using the propane flame throwing 🔥 torch. It's instant and effective. Also it's nice to go full Hiroshima on those ants and other pests.
Thanks very much for that bro. I bought 1 litre of Westminster weed killer for $10 last year, and this year it costed me $28. A huge jump which I thought was ridiculous!
Nice looking yard
We had Scotch Thistles growing on our model flying field. So tough. I tried incinerating them with an LPG torch (scorched earth!) but they just grew back, even with repeated application. I used strong Roundup without success. What absolutely worked was spraying the leaves with unleaded petrol using a pressure pump sprayer.
I've used fuel oil. it unlived everything for the entire season and into the next.
Tks SC. HAPPY 4TH.
Thank you - You too!
To answer the question about the small amount of salt applied in the mix and ruining the soil. Here in northern upstate New York the use of road salt during winter is prevalent and at far larger amounts then used here. I can attest that the grass grows great on the shoulder of the roads and keeps the highway departments busy all summer long mowing it. Great video.
That is such a fantastic point and the same here in NH, they use a ton of it and you are right there aren't burned streaks down the the highway where nothing grows! Great info thank you
Homemade weed killer. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve tried this and it does work, but I’m now using just vinegar and it works great.
i literally did this yesterday and the effect was almost immediate. will do another gallon today to finish the weeds in my mulched area. thank you for the advice.
I usually just use vinegar. I'll try this next time and see. Thanks !
I have tried this, along with a similar commercial version and found that it requires direct sunlight to work. In fact on my north facing bed you see exactly where the sun was shaded by the corner of my house, there was a crisp line of demarcation on several plants, half brown, half healthy. Without the direct sun to dry it out, it does not work.
Glyphosate (ingredient in round up) requires less yearly applications than Acetic acid (ingredient in vinegar). Also, you're going to want a stronger percentage Acetic acid than what's in basic white vinegar.
Great video. Will it also kill St. Augustine grass?
This indeed works. Just make sure to run plenty of clean water through the application device before putting it away, since salt will create deposits and clog the nozzles. Constant application is of course needed, as happens with any weed killer.
Thank you so much .
I use a mix of 35/75% vinegar and soap. Though the salt would be a good addition but those do pretty well
Use cleaning strength vinegar instead of the 5%. Warm up the vinegar before you add salt it will dissolve it, I use Epsom salt and I use DAWN for the binder.
Works for me, even with a smaller amount of salt.
great video! would this work on clovers?
you can also use any detergent, not necessarily foaming soap, as it breaks down the waxy leaf cuticle/cell membranes. and enables the mixture to wet the leaves and stick more effectively. You do not need salt if you buy commercial grade stronger acetic acid (vinegar). The salt will build up over time and make the ground less fertile with many repetitions.
I guess that’s a good reason to use salt in the driveway application then? Good point.
@@default9740 Good Point
I've never had any success using food grade vinegar. But have had some success using cleaning grade vinegar, and lots of success using swimming pool shock.
I have used vinegar, salt, citric acid salt or lemon juice with dish detergent. It works.
Thank you for making this video! I'm a bit afraid to use this for weeds, we got a lot on our gravel driveways.. but we have our own drilled well.. Could it affect our drinking water? I'm sure you don't know the whole thing here, you're not a scientist - I am not as well, but what are you thoughts on it?
No negativity in any way, but I feel that.. what should I do? We also got a lot in our lawn and as you say, this shouldn't be sprayed on the lawn..
Your new place is looking AWESOME. Maybe some VOLT Landscape lights so you can appreciate it even more at night? Let me know!!
Used this last year it did kill weeds BUT it also killed the grass left a mess in the yard. It does get rid of the weeds by the same day.
You are the BEST! Wish i found you years ago. Straight forward simple and you get right to the point. Keep doing videos 🙌🏼
That was way more than a tablespoon of dish soap that you added in the video.
Thanks for the cool weeding tip!
I was going to mention this and ask how much to really add!
This solution works well. Try the 30% "horticultural" vinegar. Smells a bit stronger. Protect your eyes and hands and stay out of the mist, keep upwind.
A recomend a suggestion use cleaning vineger 10% also use a high degreaser to break wax on some plants. Also try adding twenty mule train soap (borax)
I've been experimenting with this formula the original works well to kill smaller grasses but if you're looking to kill large ferns or small trees I found that
1 gallon vinegar
1 lb salt
one entire Dawn powerwash refill bottle
This formula Seems to work much better for the larger more tougher plants the dawn powerwash seems to stick better to the leaves then the standard dish soap and the extra salt seems to kill the larger plants more quickly
