Finally a good use for DEF
I’m glad to see DEF being of use for something. I haven’t needed it in 3 years after I hit a really big pothole and some parts fell of my truck that used DEF, but I may have to buy some jugs to spray on my lawn now! 😂
Dang potholes always jumping out of nowhere ripping off emission related parts, I know the feeling as well
😂
@@Motoracer0172 Mmhmmm, it’s unfortunate but it is what it is I guess! 🤷🏽♂️
@@Matyas_Doktor 😁😂
Yours fell off, huh?
Mines were stolen😉😆
This video appears to be a repeat of a previous video… oh well… it’s an oldie but a goldie!
Great explanation about how the NPK of 15-0-0 is determined. You have a gift in articulating with clarity 👏 Your video editing skills are way better than other lawn care channels ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hi Jesse - Thanks for all the work on this great channel! I’m in my second season of spoon feeding DEF and like the results so far. Also thinking of overseeding with Blackout this fall. Thanks again from another Northern Midwesterner - NE Wisconsin.
I definitely stand by DEF. I used it for my fall nitrogen blitz last year and it made a gigantic difference. Grass recovered from Texas heat between September to November and I was able to keep mowing almost until December. And it’s cheaper than the 27-0-0 Simple Lawn Solutions Growth and Green
I prefer AMS for the darker green up (a tip I learned from George), but I do use def in my backpack sprayer when I spray for weeds.
Urea in solid form also works great for melting Ice. Little fun fact.
Ya bro!! finally I have got my Gras/weed killer from gas pump for years!)
Thanks for the tip
I'm going to try this on my brassica food plots this fall.
2 gallons of DEF to 25 gallons water.
Then use my boom sprayer.
Send it works great
Been spoon feeding with this for awhile along with a little cheap corn syrup mixed in. Works great.
Great video
❤️ George 👍🏻
Just did this a few days ago. The lawn absolutely exploded and turned 3 shades darker in less that 24 hours
Hey Jess after the DEF is Applied how long should I wait for turn the irrigation ON ?
I appreciate the effort you both put in creating that video, Jesse and George. It was informative, engaging and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Awesome video, man! Question for you: With a foilar application, what do you recommend as a dwell time? 4 hours, then water in or apply in the evening and then water in the morning?
Can you use both DEF and Feature together as a foliar spray to get the grass super dark green super quick? I've done both separately and am wondering if I should combine the 2 products.
Awesome video bro.👊🏻
Great video!
I do 12 oz / K on mine. I love to mix it in with almost everything i put out on my grass.
Great video and perfect timing !
DEF and Feature are my 2 goto products for warm weather applications. I pay the less for a full year of product thn others do for a single application. Adds up when you're spraying 3 acres
Great for nitrogen but what about the missing compounds a lawn needs. Can they be added some how or do you still need to lay down a good slow release fertilizer
Good video, thank you. Since it’s foliar treatment, would a surfactant or MSO help it stick better?
Yessir. Didn't want to go too far into the weeds but a surfactant would definitely help
This is awesome!!! It will save big $$$
great. thanks
What tip are you using in ur sprayer
Look I been doing this for years in my farm fields.
While planting corn and spraying Roundup miracle grow def and bug spray.
I call it def con 5
I have seen a few videos on this. It's the same thing you use on crop fields. I wonder if it would work in my vegetable garden?
Can DEF be used on podocarpus hedge?
At what time of day would you apply this? Would you apply before or after it rains?
what if you have a small lawn with 700 square feet? how much do you put down ?
The tip that you are using on your sprayer, where did you get it?
Mine does not have that wide of a spray.
Can you mix both def and the dark green iron together?
George is the man!
So, I liked and subscribed, because I appreciated your in video add for mental health. My wife is a therapist. Anyway, do you have any advice for using DEF for drip irrigation on food day for my flowers and vegetables?
I had always heard that it was detrimental to grass and anywhere it was spilled like it was a poison made of many chemical compounds, but if this is the case then i will give it a try on my lawn.
I learned this last year in George's channel. I like both channels though. 😅
Both channels are awesome
Does this apply to saint Augustine grass?
You’re a wizard Harry
Can this be used on perennial foliage to stimulate growth?
Use this for the fall autumn blitz?
If use too much def in my ratio will it byrn ny lawn? (South FL)
Do you have to water it in after or let it absorb through the leaves?
Auto part stores have it. Also some gas stations and truck stops will have it also in the box.
We call it Cat Pee. Cuz of the amonia, but also cuz of CAT Deisel engines.
how long till you water your grass
Don't buy it from the corner of gas stations. You'll pay $20 if you buy it from stinson's in Ottawa, you can get it for $8 a bottle
If you apply the liquid N from DEF fluid at a rate of .2 lbs N/1K sq ft as you recommend, then how often would you reapply at the same rate to best maintain during the turf's growing season the nice green-up color achieved during the first application? Every two weeks I'd think while observing for the duration of the green-up and adjusting from there.
Every 1 to 2 weeks will keep your lawn looking great
Lime, humic acid, doc’s dirt booster and green shocker is all you need.
Very informative, interesting, and useful video. Thank you. One needs to find ways to manage during Bidenomics.
Adding this to my weekly lawn care list. Thanks for the tip!
Central Texas here. I plan on doing this combined with iron. My question is would it be worth it to add baby shampoo each time I want to spray any cocktail onto my lawn.
dawn ❤ increases germination rates 😅 91 Aggie teacher used us (her classes) as a lab
This has been done before and granular is actually cheaper by 3 times roughly. If you are looking for weak N and ease of application it works but doesn’t justify the time spent for amount of N you actually get by volume.
It would be cool to put the test of urea vs Ams in one of your videos I am in Utah and have higher ph 7+
Herees a trick load your truck up Attach a sprayer and attachemnt to your DEF tank so you still get DEF but the trucks dont use it when deleted then you got a mobile sprayer for the pastures and or fields that you want to have grss on😂
Could I mix in some liquid Iron with Def in the tank sprayer? I got some Iron left over from last year, and I wan't to use it up.
Yessir!
How long do we let it before watering? I have 26 properties I care for, all our rentals.
How long do pets need to stay off the lawn after applying DEF for fertilizer?
What about colors and oderizers? It sure doesn't smell like urea which is basically just urin right?
😂😂😂😂😂 there was a billboard prank saying you can use used motor oil on your lawn...
Yes mate. This is what I seen. I’m defo trying this when my renovation has established
I use urea. it is 46% nitrogen and I don't feel weird about using something that makes me think about petroleum fuel
I used DEF last season and had amazing results.
Has anyone experimented W/ other ferts/nutrients. I have planted fish tanks and use liquid ferts (seachem) for optimal plant growth. I have often wondered about putting a mollycoddle of seachem products and throwing her down on the lawn using the backpack sprayer. Since it’s essentially the same micro/macro that my lawn needs.
We have a gravel area where my dogs pee every time when they go out. Sometimes after a brisk rain I'm sure there's some run off into this low spot just off the gravel. It's always the darkest thickest grass in my yard. I'm sure if you found a way to dilute it enough, could be a viable option lol
@@dlandes14 unless I spray after he goes (who’s doing that?) I tend to treat bare spots with some quick patch work.
@WeShallC oh I meant try to collect the dog pee and tank mix it with water and spray it lol. The little rings around the dog spots are always super lush. If you found a way to dilute it just right.... free fertilizer!
185 grams of calcium nitrate will make 50 gallons of nutrient solution and you can spray it directly on the lawn. No dilution needed and you could use it every time you water if you want.
As a newbie, would you explain why use the 15-0-0 vs let’s say a 28-0-0 or higher? Thank you
The number is the percentage 15% nitrogen vs 46% nitrogen. It's just the concentration of nitrogen in the product. There is only a certain amount of nitrogen you want to put on your lawn per 1000sqft. So with the 46-0-0 you would use less product compared to the 15-0-0 to get the desired amount of nitrogen down on your lawn.
Great job thanks for doing the math. Just wanted to clarify you didn’t have to water it in at that 21oz rate? I’m going to try mixing this with some PGR…
You do not. Should mix fine with pgr
As someone that uses Def in my vehicle, I hate seeing this. If this trend takes off the price of Def will go up..... diesel is already 5.09 a gallon here on the nw.....
Trust me - no one but lawn nuts will use it
haha yeah
People been doing this for a long time
@@vi0csand only a small portion of those also.
$5.89 in SoCal
Def is $12 at Costco, fyi
If there are weeds in the yard, will this enhance weed growth?
idk why george deluted the def in the ortho. he didn't say how much def he put in or how much water. but why not just reduce the mix level on the dial control?
He did say. I think it was an ounce.
Is DEF pet friendly on your lawn?
Man your neighbor is like DAMN there goes the green grass guy again....
When I apply DEF with a hose-end sprayer, I add a little food coloring, so I can see when it runs out.
Another use for DEF: Add some to weed killer, the urea gets the weeds to uptake the chemical faster.
Thanks 👍
If it's a root-absorption herbicide, that can help. But most are foliage absorption. For them, add some liquid dish soap to break down the water's surface tension.
Urea (DEF or other) can also help with uptake of systemic insecticides such as Imidacloprid.
@@bobprivate8575 Sounds like a good idea. I'd point out that I used a herbicide with quinclorac, added DEF and citric acid, and that just murdered my crabgrass. However there may have been a surfactant (ie, soap) in the herbicide, as a non-active thus unlisted ingredient. So I may have just lucked out. Anyway, the daggone crabgrass is gone!
Menards sells herbicide/insecticide coloring so you see where it's sprayed and/or level in hose-end sprayers. $20 a bottle!
I think I paid $1.19 for a assortment of food coloring in the bakery section of the supermarket.
What will it do to my trees ?
If you spoon feed during the summer, how much would you put down per app/gallon of water?
It's in the video
@@LAWNLIFE gotcha, I thought maybe it would be less. Thanks!
Just save your pepee and add water, that’s the best and it’s free also
DEF works pretty good 😊
Why cant we get a simple mix ratio, oz of def to water?
@PrincessCutLawnCare
1 year ago (edited)
Application Rates Per 1k sqft:
(Mixed w 1 gallon of water per 1ksqft)
Low Rate (0.10 lbs of N) : 9.5 oz per 1k sqft
Medium Rate (0.15 lbs of N): 14.25 oz per 1k sqft
High Rate (0.20 lbs of N): 19 oz per 1k sqft
*BE SURE TO MIX WITH 1 GALLON OF WATER PER 1K SQFT AND WATER IN AFTER APPLICATION
Gawd….everything is an establishment scam innit.. I laughed my ass off when you were pumping fertilizer out at the gas station. Great video!
glad to see Princesscutlawns colab!
Finally, a useful use for def. All good mechanics know it is a engine killer.
I'm not a fan but it's not an engine killer. It's injected after combustion and into the exhaust. So it's a little late to kill an engine
As a farmer I am a little taken back by this video. Come on man seriously. All these people are going to be going out and improperly using DEF. Buy a bag of granular and spread if you must. What you are not telling everyone is the granular will stay there. Stay in the soil for the uptake of the grass. You spray the def on your lawn and get a heavy rain and bam it leaches lower into the soil then the roots can use or runs off into the storm water system. Not only is your idea bad for the pocket book but not a great environment standpoint. Just my 2 cents here but kind of annoyed. Why not tell everyone to spread waste oil on their lawns? Yes they will grow like crazy but people know better for the environment
Yeah. If you pay attention, he tells you that DEF is not a good choice.
He is also pointing out that your DEF mandated equipment is producing run off.
DEF is one of those stupid ideas that environmentalists came up with. It just shifts the focus.
Somebody help me I went to the truck stop to get it in bulk and the guy working told me to use the big green handle because it pumped faster and now my yard looks yellow???? I don’t know what to do
Sound like you didn’t diluting enough. Burn the grass
Will the DEF also kill the clover and dandelions in the lawn?
As I suspected, after doing the math, the cost of 46-0-0 from my local professional landscape supplier is 37% less than Blue Def and much easier to apply.
I did the math and said that in the video
He said the same thing
Yea. I saw this video last year and thought the same thing. I was really excited for a minute
Blue def is the most expensive, its usually under 3$ a gallon at the pump
@@nicklandrum1820 do any of you people actually watch the video?
I do this treatment every 3 weeks on my lawn. Looks beautiful. Neighbors complement my lawn all the time.
I do a 50-50 mix to water and DEF.
you could put blue dye into sprayer to make sure you don't roast your lawn, know where you have sprayed. few teaspons per a few gallons goes along way
It's also called horse piss...
One could just piss in the def tank and would probably work better😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It was Goat urine, until synthetically made. FYI, your urine at 1:7 ratio is just as good. And free.
Can I add ferric sulfate anhydrous with DEF and apply with a hose end sprayer ? Also Tenacity with DEF ?
Yes it's a compatible tank mix, just follow the WALES tank mixing order to avoid any mixing problems. However, I would suggest applying tenacity first, as it may cause the grass tips to bleach or discolor for a couple of weeks. If you apply iron & DEF at the same time as tenacity, the color change won't be as noticeable as the iron/DEF application by itself due to this bleaching effect.
is blue def ad blue in uk we have ad blue
Yes it is the same product!
TSC DEFinitely has 2.5 gallons of DEF for $7.25 !
My weeds and crabgrass grow just fine with fertilizer.
I can confirm everything he said. I work for a chemical company and we sell DEF. We sell DEF to some customers that use it for fertilizer.
thanks alot, my yard is now brown and dead. 😂
George!!! Lol
Doesn't it harden and turn white?
I just subscribed, excellent video! But I love the fact, you said, I produce videos I work, and I am a Husband and Father! ❤ this, dude is the Man! 🙌🇺🇸
Your urine at 1 to 7 ratio is equally good and free. Since tap water contains beneficial minerals you don't need deionized water. That was to prevent mineral build up in the mechanical system.
DEF prices are about to sky rocket 😆
Princes cut did this video
He has a segment in the video, gave him a shout out near the end.
There’s a lot of videos on this topic, it’s not unique
How often can you put it down using a hose end sprayer?
The answer to your question requires some calculations based on your desired nitrogen application rate (e.g 0.2 lb of actual nitrogen per 1000 square-feet). Both cool-season and warm-season grasses require 4-6 lbs (1.8-2.7 kg) of actual nitrogen per 1000 square-feet each year. This amount can be divided into twenty x 0.2lb applications to get 4 pounds annually-as an example. Or twenty-six applications of 0.15lb to get approximately 4 pounds. However, keep in mind your calculations must be based on the percentage of actual nitrogen content of your chosen fertiliser which, if you choose DEF, is 15-0-0. There’s plenty of web sites to help you with these calculations. I’m in Australia and use kilograms and square-metres, so I won’t attempt your imperial calculations 😁
Quackgrass! Not crabgrass. QUACKGRASS!!!! Need to know most worthy way to eliminate it from a lawn and be able to reseed with Kentucky Blue Grass afterwards. In six years I've resurrected a shambles of a lawn except for the QUACKGRASS. I know it's going to ruin the appearance for awhile, but looking for a solution. Best I can find so far is to 'dab' each plant above ground with a strong herbicide (not sure which one yet...), given the way the roots string-out. Any thoughts?????
BTW, it's the lawn in our MN property.
Stupid question. Can it be used as a vegetable fertilizer?
