Onyx in Greek base means "claw" so the Onyx is a dark claw that strikes you, Ferox could also be other latin "cruel. defiant, arrogant, fierce, wild" also Rhea is also Greek mythology mother of all the gods, Rhea birthing a jump point. I just go with the Caldari were originally Gallente so names kinda stuck
In the lore, or at least last I knew, didn't the Gallente leave the Caldari and form their own faction at some point as well?! That could explain why they also use mythological names.
Yeah, of course, but this is such a non-argument. They also don't speak English so everything we're reading is translated. Point is, it's made by a development team that have ideas. Step outside of the game for a moment 😊
Loving your analysis of the naming tradition, just catching up with what I've missed. With regard to the Basilisk, perhaps the view is that it turns its gaze on something, which turns into stone (or ''stone-like'') and thus becomes impervious to damage. As a remote shield booster that would fit, a kind of reverse-psychology. I may be reaching lol. Also, Rhea is not only a bird but was the name for the Mother-Goddess of Greek mythology, mother of Zeus no less.
Being a Greek allow me to inform you that Corax is the crow in Greek even modern Greek Corax Corakas is the same. Same with many names of Ships. Thanatos is Greek for death, Titan is Greek and generally guys in CCP use quite often greek names. Oneiros is dream, Apotheosis, Helios, Omega, Alpha, Myrmidon, Algos and many others are Greek.
Yeah lots of Greek Gallente names, and whilst Corax is Greek, my point was that not all "scientific" names are 😊 hope I don't offend you too much when it comes the Gallente video, I promise I'll try my best!!
Badger kind of works, as they burry cadavers the find for later. There is a great video of a badger burrying and entire cow over several nights. So busy work horse kinda works
Are you going to do a rapid fire Drones/AT ships/Fighters/Special Edition ships video in this style? I'd love to hear about your experiences with Caimans or learn what the heck the Utu is!
Benzie, can you please make a video with the Officer Hunting ? I would like to have in video couple ships and if is possible with cheap fits and very expensive fits but low SP requirements . Will be much appreciated because I cannot really find good videos about Officer Hunting.
15:32 Really?! I remember one of the Espers from FF6, where when you used it's major ability I believe it gave you Regen, though it might have just been a MASSIVE basic heal. Unless I unaware of a Monster Hunter game, they are MUCH, MUCH newer!
Bantam's are fighting birds. Like cockfighting. Not good stuff. But it does have a long and culturally impactful up history. The birds have a reputation for being fierce, and there's even a weight class called bantamweight in a lot of fighting sports.
They remade so many of these models a while back (Moa, Caracal, etc) and made them so shiny but why didn't they make the Raven everything it could have been!! Don't get me started on the Golem.
@captainbenzie Like, not love. They designed a hull based on a gliding corvid, and then they made it lopsided with the head of a chickadee. Imagine if they had kept that gorgeous corvid glide intact, that would have been a hull to love and fear!
If you think the scorpion is odd now, you should see the original design. It looked like a building with one wing to the right side. I was actually annoyed when they changed the designs, because they went more symmetrical and showier, and less "this is space so we can do anything!" kind of thing.
Yeah, watch a goose or swan attack. Ducks are similar to their style of fighting. Also remember that the birds are the last of the dinosaur ancestry. They can be quite fierce when cornered.
In Arabic, the rokh is pronounced Ḫāʾ, Khāʾ There is no pronunciation of it in the English language, so you gotta search for the 7th letter in Arabic and listen to its pronunciation.
True, but language evolves and many of our words in English are utterly detached from their original pronunciation (just check how Worcestershire is pronounced! Or how "beef" is very different from the "boef" it came from) There's a discussion in the second Pirates of the Carribbean film where such an argument occurs about the pronunciation of the word "kraken" before the argument is settled with the line "It's a mythological creature, I can calls it what I wants!"
@captainbenzie @captainbenzie True true , eventually it's supposed to be up to our imagination. Yet somehow, i feel like some of the details are giveaways. A lot of the known npc Amarr characters have literally Islamic names (Arabian Origins), especially in the "dark amarr" the khanid kingdom, and also the stated relationship between Caldari and Khanid and militaristic technology cooperation, the relationship between Militaristic Authoritarian nations (Russia, Japan etc) and the "Caucasian" (Dagestan , Uzbekistan etc) which are technically Russians 🙄 , Khabib Nurmagomedov is clearly a khanid lol. Character creation limits (facial traits) can also ensure that idea for me. All in all, the authors have surprisingly knitted the whole thing tight enough to not give a clear answer, yet it is there for those who want it to be there. Thank you so much captain for your reply. it means a lot 🙏

Fair point
To awnser why some ships have mythological names, it's cause they are made by the lai-dai corp witch has its roots in the gallente empire.
I think harpy fits. It is bird like
In the lore, or at least last I knew, didn't the Gallente leave the Caldari and form their own faction at some point as well?! That could explain why they also use mythological names.
It was the other way around the caldari left the gallente federation
This is a good point
You have to remember New Eden at this time is thousands of years from being in contact with Earth, so these names may have different meanings now.
Yeah, of course, but this is such a non-argument. They also don't speak English so everything we're reading is translated.

Big fan of Cormorants too....similar is an Anhinga which I like bit more remember them drying their wings in palm trees.
Beautiful birds!!
I feel like one of the empires should have named their haulers after marsupials like the Possum, Koala, Kangaroo, Wombat, and Wallaby.
Lmao that's brilliant!!

That's a really damn good point about the Basilisk!!

Caldari really like their water transport ships XD, both Kestrel and Chimera used to be water transport ships
Didn't know that about the Chimera!
Badger kind of works, as they burry cadavers the find for later. There is a great video of a badger burrying and entire cow over several nights. So busy work horse kinda works

I wonder how much the greek names in Caldari have to do with their shared origin with the Gallente
That's a possibility
Calidari is my fav cuz I like their ship design
They do have some very cool ships!
That’s the quickest reply
Buzzard is an opportunistic hunter. Under that profile may fits a covop frig.
I guess so, but a CovOps doesn't hunt. It has no weaponry.
@@captainbenzieI know for sure early pvpers hunting using a Cheetah
@@giuseppeviscomi7033 as an alt or part of a fleet, yes, but the ship itself has very little combat potential
I think they were going for the Harpy Eagle which is a large gorgeous bird.
Yeah that's a possibility
Benzie learning tons of bird knowledge just to make a video on Caldari ship names
A decent amount of this I actually knew ahead of time which was eye opening! 😂
There is only one bird that rises from the ashes armed with haws, the nightmare of lowsec, my friend the Phoenix
Exactly!
BTW, there is a Harpy Eagle. Biggest eagle I believe. They’re huge
Oh yeah, that's a good point! It's large, but not the largest
Just want to add: Mythological counter to the stork is the swallow.
What?!
storks bring babies, swallows take them away
😂 OMFG 😂

Glad that you're enjoying!!

FF6 does indeed predate Monster Hunter 1. I forgot about that Esper!

I really like the golem, it really looks bulky and T H I C K.
I quite like the Raven hull personally 😅
@captainbenzie Like, not love. They designed a hull based on a gliding corvid, and then they made it lopsided with the head of a chickadee.
Imagine if they had kept that gorgeous corvid glide intact, that would have been a hull to love and fear!
Moa fall into the catagory of terror birds

Yeah, I remember that. And the old Stabber, Moa etc... but damn, the old Executioner 🤢
Most Caldari names are birds of
Yes but many aren't
Gallente and Caldari have a shared history so maybe Charon is from that?
Nah, ducks can be violent af
Lmao so true
Yeah, watch a goose or swan attack. Ducks are similar to their style of fighting. Also remember that the birds are the last of the dinosaur ancestry. They can be quite fierce when cornered.
Maybe Ferox comes from Latin. Meaning fierce, savage.
That's the root of the scientific name, yes
just a few images of birds could have made this a great video
Good point. Noted!
You should look up the meaning of many of these words again. They're more specific. Words like Raptor, Falcon, etc.
Mystic Onyx is chicken 😅 just found it.
Lmao really???
Bump
🚀
