Premier Guitar caught up with Kryz Reid, the Dubliner who holds the coveted lead guitar slot for American Alt Rock giants Third Eye Blind. 3eb was hunkered in at Soundcheck rehearsal hall in Nashville, tuning up for an upcoming tour. During a break, Reid showed us nine very seductive guitars, (each, strangely enough, named after a Star Wars character) and revealed a bit of gear-break-down paranoia when he described his backups for his backup pedalboard.
Ried names all of his guitars after Star Wars characters from the Dark Side. His #1 is "The Emperor", a Gibson '59 Les Paul, custom made and reliced with aged wood, hardware etc. Next is "Vadar", a 1979 Gibson The Paul, which was the first good guitar Reid bought. "Vadar" sports a Seymour Duncan Antiquity in the neck position and an Alnico II for the bridge. Reid uses "Vadar" for "Graduate", "The Background", "Can you Take Me"-anything using an open D tuning (D A D F# A D). Next is "TK-421", an stock 1966 Telecaster Custom. Another vintage gem is his stock 1966 Jazzmaster named "Sidious" currently tuned to F# A C# F# G# E. On the modern side, Reid plays a 2011 Fano JM-6 named "Fett", based on a Jazzmaster with a Lindy Fralin P-90's in the neck and bridge positions and a Bigsby Vibrato. Other guitars in the boat currently are three new Les Paul Traditionals used as back ups, a 2013 Fano TC-6 ('Maul') and a '68 Reissue Custom Shop Stratocaster ('Death Star'). All are strung with D'Addario 11 gauge except the Les Paul, DADf#AD tuning backup, which is strung with 12 Gauge.
Reid travels with a main rig and a redundant rig that mirror the other. The main rig consists of a '93 Custom Shop Fender Tone-Master and matching cabinet for clean tones. The cab houses Celestion Vintage 30's, the head has four 5881's and three 12AX7A's. The main rig's dirty sound comes from a 1965 Marshall Plexi with 6L6's and 12AX7A's running through a Mesa 4X12 cabinet with Vintage 30's in her. (Reid mistakenly calls it a '67 in the video, but who can keep track of this much vintage gear.)
The redundant rig consists of another Fender Custom Shop Tone-Master for clean and a 1969 50 watt Marshall JMP for dirty, which reportedly was the main amp used on Bad Company's first record, most notably "Feel like making love.".
Dave Phillips at LA Sound Design built both Reid's "A" and "B" effects rigs. Everything is custom wired by Phillips with Mogami 2524 cable except the Divine Noise 50/50 (half curly, half straight) cable that runs from Reid's guitar to the board. The "A" rig consists of an RJM Effect Gizmo being run by an RJM Mastermind GT. The Effect Gizmo sits in a rack unit with all the effects beside his amps and cabs. The Mastermind GT lives in Reid's pedalboard with a custom A/B Box interface for the rack, two custom-made Mission Engineering expression pedals, an Ernie Ball 25k Ohm volume pedal, Boss TU-2 Tuner, and a TC Electronics Ditto Looper. Reid's guitar runs into a Dave Phillip's made A/B Box Interface. "A" signal runs to the rack, "B" signal runs to the redundant pedalboard and amps. The signal then runs into Jim Dunlop Rack Wah which is controlled by a custom Mission Engineering expression pedal. Next the signal hits the RJM Effect Gizmo to route to different pedals. Loop 1: Digitech Whammy DT (Controlled by a Mission Engineering RJM-1 custom expression pedal which runs the Whammy via the Mastermind GT for ON/OFF and Treadle) Loop 2: Keeley Modded DS-1 Loop 3: Way Huge Swollen Pickle Loop 4: Keeley Compressor (four knob) Loop 5: Dunlop Rack Volume (controlled by the Ernie Ball Volume Pedal on pedalboard acting as an expression pedal) Loop 6: Strymon Mobius Loop 7: Roger Linn Adrenalinn III Loop 8: Strymon Timeline Loop 9: TC Electronics Ditto Loop 10: Strymon Blue Sky Loop 11: Marshall Plexi Loop 12: Fender Tone-Master The "B" rig basically mirrors the rack with an all-in-one pedalboard that is used on fly dates or as a redundant system on other dates. The B Rig signal chain runs from the guitar to a Boss TU-2 Tuner, then a Radial Bones A/B Switch ("A" signal stays on this board, "B" signal goes to a "C" Rig for a backup on fly dates). From there, the signal runs into a Custom Audio Electronics Wah, a Digitech Whammy V then a RJM Mini Effect Gizmo. Loop 1: Keeley Compressor (four knob) Loop 2: Way Huge Swollen Pickle Loop 3: Keeley Modded DS-1 Loop 4: Strymon Mobius Loop 5: Roger Linn Adrenalinn III Ernie Ball Volume Pedal A Keeley Looper sends the signal to a Strymon Timeline and a TC Electronics Ditto then a Strymon Blue Sky. A RJM Y-NOT Midi controlled A/B Box switches between the Fender Tone-Master and the Marshall JMP 45.

My first "Real" guitar was also a '79 Gibson The Paul. Got it new 35 years ago and still play it all the time. Great guitar!
It's great to have a guy that knows his own gear. Big props
This is the best of seen so far, Kryz really knows his stuff and has obviously been quite generous with his time. I don't really know the band that well but I'll check them out on the back of this.
Their self titled album is literally one of the best all around 90's albums imo.
agree, one of my favorite albums all time. they wrote some amazing songs
Jeremy Shutrump I go through the track-list and its just crazy how much good music was packed into one album!
Could take out the 90s part
I like his choice of nicknames for his guitars, the Force is definitely strong in him
probably one of the best rundowns in awhile... awesome gear and an awesome dude...
I absolutely love this presenter. His contribution is perfect.
oh... and the B.B. "Beiber board" just killed me :D...
Third Eye Blind are Star Wars nerds?! Gonna have to go listen to their stuff now.
This interviewer is so much better than the other guy. Keep him. He's good.
What a great job you both have!! :) Nice piece, nice set-up, woah!
His main midi footswitch with all the lights is INSANE
What a humble cool guy!!
this guy is awesome, his gear shows it, no middle of the mall shit, lol
ThirdEyeBlind has always had some of the best guitar tones on all of their records
well, the first and second albums of theirs feature a different guitar player with an entire original approach to the guitar.. he was substituted by this guitar player, who was originally in the band, but took no part in their success.
Kevin Cadogan.
1BalBal1 You're thinking of Tony Fredianelli, not this guy. The story goes: Kevin Cadogan was the original guitarist who played on the first two albums which were wildly successful. He was kicked out of the band and replaced by Tony Fredianelli who played on the last two records they put out. This new guy replaced Tony after he was kicked out of the band. One of my favorite all-time bands, but the magic was gone after the first two albums.
Kevin has a side project with the lead singer from Smash Mouth...don't know where Tony is.
Amid the Fight I must admit that I entered just to throw shit at 3eB in their current format.
for the record, Tony Fredianelli was the original guitar player for the band. he was replaced by Kevin, who made the first two records. I agree with the rest and with your opinion on the matter.
someone said about the current 3eB: "this is the worst 3eB cover band, ever"
I totally agree.
1BalBal1 Any opportunity to throw shit at the later incarnations of 3eb is worthwhile. Rock on. The new guy has cool gear, I'll give him that, but you're right, this has just been a sorry cover band for years.
1BalBal1 Yea, it's called Radio Angel. Some of Kevin's clips he's uploaded to Facebook just explode with the uniqueness and natural wonder in guitar tones that he contributed to 3eb when he was with them. Iagree with you 100% though, Kryz is way cool and a good guy with some really cool gear, but he is in a tribute/cover band now. Cheers
They need to do an updated Black Keys Rig Rundown for 2014 since they are on tour and also do one for Cage The Elephant since they are on tour with the Black Keys.
Finally PEDALS :) Awesome.
Drinking game every time he says gotcha
OK, so where is Stephan Jenkins rig and guitars? You guys realize he still plays guitar and doesn't just sing, right? Pretty vital member right there...
I have a 79' as well but it's hammered
Exactly! I was actually more curious about his setup, he seems like a guitar into amp guy, at least based on all the live footage I’ve seen.
wow that's pretty much my dream collection right there
Can't wait for that Nickleback Rig Rundown... P.U.
Great rundown!!!
He's got a Sidious AND an emperor...
They’re a touring band. Why distress these guitars?
The Bondi Sick As is such an awesome overdrive. It's pronounced Bond-Eye though, but that's ok ;)
new guitarist is much more fun and awesome than the original :-D he knows his gear alright! respect!!!!
This no joke gear...damn bro had no idea Third Eye Blind was touring with kind of gear. I saw this band live and the singing wasn't so great.
Yess !! STAR WARS !!!
"Yea its only ever had a refret" uuhhh is it stock?
What do you mean?
P.S.
New guitarist just trying to figure stuff out.
"Fett" means "Awesome" in norwegian! Epic
Fett means fat in German. But if you looked it up in an urban dictionary you'd find it's also used to mean cool, awesome, ..
Awesome band, awesome guitarist. Cant get over how the interviewer knows nothing about gear haha
The gum chewing is for covering up the noticeable jaw dance.
What about that AC30???
Big surprise to see the DS-1 on his board. Looked modded though
Officeninja428 yeah, he said that the DS-1 is Keeley modded
What pickups at 6:35?
Host with the most blow?
that strat is a beauty
Cool dude.
Sick As overdrive rocks!
Thanks Shane! Good to hear from you again!
Gotcha!
I wonder what the Nazi-preset on the Mastermind Controller does :)
Do a sum 41 rig rundown, please!!
The PG guy seems polite but clueless sometimes
Keeley Pedals are awesome...
Did that f****** dude say I like the little knobs
Do a Steve Miller Band Rig Rundown
why does his midi footswitch have a preset that says "nazi"?? (see 18:35, bottom right corner of his midi controller)
oliverohaver who cares?
Interviewer is gakked. How did this pass? This guy is high as shit.
Gotcha
You should not be allowed to play a Stratocaster without a tremolo bar. It's sacrilege.
Tarkin!
Just ask a friend with a friend. Family with meaning happy, healthy sleep better at night.
awesome gear and guitars! but they make bad music, i really dont like them! but awesome gear... money
neclof heller .. quality of music is subjective. 3eb music can bring me to tears. GREAT MUSIC
its a star wars freack OMG
Who else usually skips the guitars to get to the rest of the gear?
A lot of gear for a band that plays pretty basic stuff. OD, Chorus/Delay would get him through a set & the audience wouldn't know the difference.
At one time, you had the "formula", interviewers who weren't Really Good at what they did. The 2 Homeboys you got now are super lame and star struck. Rebecca Dirks,( a girl who probably didn't play an instrument) was way better than your new guys.
A girl who probably didn't play an instrument? Rebecca Dirks knew her stuff.
Rebecca play and collect guitars. you should see her amazon wish list.
seriously how does some one who works for premier guitar not know what the sick ass overdrive is? can I have this dudes job? i guarantee I'll do a hell of a lot better. but really if your not gonna actually know gear why do this? (it's not like its a super unknown pedal either it's all over instagram and gear pages).
Haha, thanks man!
Relicing is fake.
