This song is about mining, yes, but it's also about how the mining companies used to have onsite housing for their "employees", pay them in company backed script, and then charge them for absolutely everything through their " company store". They would also "provide" meals for the workers and their families which, though they could refuse to eat them would be charged for them as though they had, they then turned around and charged quite heavily for. That is what the line " I owe my soul to the company store " is all about in the song.

But it is nice to see the music is still relevant, being it is being covered with these great new talented people. Another old favorite similar to this is Big Bad John, by Jimmy Dean in 1961. Went to number 1. They even did a movie based on the story in the song in 1990. Don't let the age of the song fool you. I highly recommend giving both originals a listen.
