    This was such an informative video. I bought a meyer lemon tree today and while talking to the woman she casually said that it's been grafted. I came home to look up what she meant because I don't think I knew exactly what that was. Thanks for all of your help. You seem to have full knowledge on the subject. What a great find. Thumbs up!

    I watched this video & used this graft 2 years ago and had 90% success! I did apples, plums & pears. Also, its soo cool to have Sammy Hagar teach me this. Thanks for the coolest grafting video on yootoob

    I never thought it was so easy to graft trees. I am learning how to clone apple trees. Your video showed me how easy it is. I will try it soon with some root stock I am planning to grow. Thank you for showing me how to graft.

    I would love to see any more you might make on this or other fruit/veg/permaculture etc subjects

      +stephencarlsbad so it looks like he is saying Oct is the best time, or at least that's when he put the video on,, what time are you saying is the best?? no one has given any definite dates, just "this time" he also said that he just went out and cut the scions off, I always thought they were supposed to be cut off when the tree is dormant

    • @jmusicman6102
      @jmusicman6102 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dave12546. I recommend grafting in May in the mid Atlantic where I live. You want the mother tree to be leafing out, and you won't hit any hot dry spells and risk the scion wood drying out. Speaking of scion wood, be sure that the scion wood is still dormant.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing!
    I personally use the budding rubber bands first for support and then cover them with parafilm. I cover the entire scion with parafilm stretched thin and the buds break right through. If sunlight/heat is a problem, I wrap the graft loosely with a strip of aluminum foil for a couple of weeks or until the buds begins to break dormancy and then remove the foil. You still have to return later to cut/remove the rubber band because the sunlight doesn't break it down fast enough when covered with the parafilm. I mainly graft stone fruits with the cleft graft tool which cuts a perfect wedge from the rootstock and scion. It really heals fast and strong.

  • @shanelt4

    In my experience it is possible to graft a plum scion onto a wild cherry tree. I managed to successfully graft Ozark plum onto my wild cherry tree. Unfortunately the label fell off and it was pruned off a year or so later. So extra reason to make sure the label stays in place. Mine was a wire with a metal label that somehow got knocked off. I would recommend making multiple grafts of the variety you want because not every graft will 'take" especially for beginning grafters.

    Yes. As long as it is like to like. Two apples can be grafted together but you couldn't graft an apple onto a plum tree. Stone fruit (plums, peaches, apricots, necterines, and sometimes cherries) can be grafted onto each other.

    This is EXCELLENT! I am new to grafting. Can you take cuttings directly from one tree and
    graft to another without storing them for a while in cold conditions? I
    have done this with cherry grafts onto plum root-stock and I'm not sure
    if I have made a mistake.

    you still around? I need to know if frost will affect my new grafts? I watched your video in the past and find it the best...because I like this graft and its worked well. I had 9/13 grafts take. I like your video. I grafted another 9 and frost is expected a couple of times in the next 5 days and wondered if I should cover them with plastic/paper or leave them alone. I have them well wrapped with parafilm (great stuff) note: I use florescent tape to mark branches.

  • @miragexl007
    @miragexl007 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm attempting grafting, I got some of this tape because of your video. seems like the best idea, I did a couple with the black grafting paste (and have seen videos with grafting wax) but this stuff gets into the graft and blocks the cambium right? I'm going to use the tape to do the ones I really want. Is it really important to put a lot on to keep out air and water...is this the point of the wax/grafting black stuff?

  • @miragexl007
    @miragexl007 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    PS. do you have to take that tape off? when, in a couple of weeks? or will it expand nicely for awhile. I want to make sure there is a good union/connection before taking it off.

    • @corimacnaughton6164
      @corimacnaughton6164 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you listen to the video, he says the tree buds are just beginning to swell, so that is the best clue as to when to graft - when the buds are beginning to swell in your area.

    • @BackSeatHump
      @BackSeatHump 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cori MacNaughton I do understand what you're saying but it's a bit of a cop-out.

    • @corimacnaughton6164
      @corimacnaughton6164 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just trying to be helpful, and it really does all depend on where you live. What worked for me in Zone 10 California did NOT work in Zone 9B Florida, and neither approach will help now that I am in Zone 6B Tennessee.
      For example, say he says April, but you live in a warmer climate and your trees start budding in February; then by following his advice to do your grafting in April you'll be doing it at the wrong time for your location, and your grafts are less likely to be successful.
      My advice is to call your local extension service to find out when tree buds start swelling in your location.
      Or not. Your call. Best of luck either way.

    • @BackSeatHump
      @BackSeatHump 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cori MacNaughton I understand that, thank you yes, but there's more to it that that. Cherries, for example, bud flowers first then come leaves. So I'm guessing that it matters if you graft at the time the flower buds start to swell or at the time the leave buds start to swell. I don't know.

  • @ToolsnFire
    @ToolsnFire 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Intergeneric grafts are successfully done. Though genera is a human concept.
    For examples, different Citrus genera, which for some reason aren't named genus Citrus, such as Poncirus and Fortunella. Pyrus and Malus have some compatability, though variable.

  • @shanelt4
    @shanelt4 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    On second thought the metal label did stay attached. my reletive who trimmed it just missed it somehow and pruned off that part anyway. I think bc they are farsighted and were pruning upclose. Maybe I should paint the labels a bright orange to make them stand out.
