Les Brigands clearly influenced W.S. Gilbert. He did a singing translation of it, but when a company did it with his translation, he sued because he said it was intended to be a guide only and without his customary brilliance and ingenuity. It's on imslp in vocal score. Christopher Columbus was concocted for the American Bicentennial. It's very funny and has a lot of rare Offenbach.
We're still waiting for a Cluytens opera/vocal box to go with the orchestral box Warner released years ago. A Michel Plasson box from Warner would be fantastic - lots of esoteric orchestral/choral works, but also Offenbach operettas and some really rare French operas like Roussel's "Padvamati" and Magnard's "Guercoeur".
Piotr Beczała must have just been starting his career when he recorded the Rhine-Nixon. Currently he's singing Radames in the new Met Aida. Great tenor. Thanks for your romp through Offenbach. Great vids, as usual.
I don't fault you for your tam-tam, but I must admit...as I watch your videos on my main computer and it's patched through my main stereo system....I must mute when you let the beater go. Otherwise, it rattles my windows.
My favorite composer changes from day to day, but it's Offenbach.
🥴
I was most fortunate to play pit in a run of Hoffman with the Lyric Opera of Baltimore. A lovely work and my wife and daughter just loved it.

Plasson has been done in two boxes, one orchestral, one vocal. Out of print, of course, but they did 'em.

Rhine-Nixon? As opposed to the Danube-Clinton?
