I'm a Paavo Järvi fan and I was expecting a lot when I listened to this but yeah, what a yawner. I came, I heard, I was bored. Moving on now.

Gerhard Stolze is my favorite Roasting Swan in my favorite Carmina, among many, DG with Jochum. It was an inspired choice along with Janowitz and Fischer-Dieskau, especially characterful as the Abbott.
P.S. love it when Dave is in cd throwing mode.

I sang in the chorus as a second tenor for 2 performances of Carmina in Honolulu, and later in southeast Iowa for 3 performances. What a thrill! These were with minor orchestras and conductors you probably would not have heard of, but we "left nothing on the field" - gave the music our all. Best memory of the rehearsals was of the conductor cutting off the orchestra over and over for not giving him what he wanted - particularly the brass. After about the 5th interruption, he almost screamed at the horns: "this has to be RAUCOUS!" And in the next take, believe me, it was.

Why would you use a countertenor for the roasted swan solo? That makes no sense at all.

I'm finally going to see Carmina live later this year!! I'm so excited, I hope it's done well... I really like the "razor sharp" ones, as you described!

Hello! Have you heard Seong-Jin Cho's recently released complete Ravel piano works on DG? (The booklet even mentions the 150th anniversary of Ravel's birth)

And on the subject, I noticed Bavouzet is releasing a new complete set as well later this year, on Chandos this time. I imagine he is re-recording them, and not reusing his MDG recordings

This is one of those works where you think "we really don't need any more recordings of this". Of course Gramophone rave about this recording in their latest issue...

I was so excited about this recording, but now I'm just sad😢
Maybe his dad will record it 😊

I frankly don't see Paavo taking a great liking to "Carmina Burana". I wonder if it was an 'obligation recording' that's part of the contractual agreement for Paavo to record the Mahler symphonies with the Tonhalle (?).

Agreed. I bought this a couple of weeks ago, but found it very disappointingly flat (especially the baritone). Shame, because Paavo Järvi usually does a great job.

The Järvi name was deservedly respected back in the day, but I have always found that Paavo tends to miss the point. If he is with top musicians to work with, the results can be good, but it is not his input that makes them good. We should know by now that great musicianship isn't genetic - even if the ability to beat time is. Sorry, but marvellous music deserves the best interpretation possible. This work was recently performed in Reykjavik with the Icelandic Symphony, and it was just fabulous. Why? Extremely musical conductor; right tempo; right colour; right energy.

Why there are so many recordings by Paavo Järvi on the market is beyond confusing.

Having listened to a lot of Paavo J's recordings over the decades I've come to the conclusion that he's best and most comfortable with mid 19th c. central European music. His Beethoven through Mendelssohn are terrific. But go beyond that and it's not so good: Mahler, Tchaikovsky....now Orff. I didn't think his Schmidt was all that great either.
