When I was 15, I somehow acquired the three-record set "The Golden Years, Vol. 2". I was in love with her voice and played it constantly. I learned the language of jazz by osmosis, waiting for her to sing one or two verses in each song. Those 1930's recordings on Columbia are part of my DNA.
I am so terribly sorry for the racism she faced. I was a kid in Alabama when the Freedom Riders came through Birmingham. My mother told me they were "fighting for their freedom." Even as a little kid, that astounded or shook me. How could any American be fighting for his of her freedom? I thought. In college, my fraternity brothers and I fought tooth and nail to integrate Sigma Chi, and we did.

She had great cars,beautifully dressed and radiant personality.That provoked lot of jealousy by white folks.

That's just the most disgusting treatment of another human being - harassing the poor woman on her death bed.
