    Great review mate! but slight correction actually the backlight can be turned on permanently. There are the follow steps
    1. Fn + F2 (Head into BIOS)
    2. Go to the 'MAIN" tab
    3. There a setting that says "Keyboard backlight timeout" change from "Enabled" to "Disable"
    Hopefully it helps anyone who wish to keep the backlight on at all cost.

    Superb in-depth review, covering all the aspects I can think of. This will definitely help folks to understand whether this laptop is for them or not. I think they should have added another smaller fan to dissipate the heat from the GPU. Also, having a RTX 3050 makes more sense here at that 35W power envelope, the performance of those two GPU will be more or less same and the cost could have been reduced a bit.

    Great review. This helped pushed me to buy this laptop. I bought a different WiFi card (ax210 a&e) which is working great. Changed it before I even booted it up the first time. I have always had issues with mediatek, so IMO its not even worth fighting it to get it to work, as a Linux user at least. I'm using kernel 5.15.15 and I haven't noticed any issues. Everything just works. I'm coming from an Intel 10510u w/ an nvidia mx250 and this laptop is so much better. I really like how much power this thing has and it doesn't look like an obnoxious gaming laptop

    Quick question, even though external monitor uses the amd gpu, most of the power would still be coming from the 3050ti when playing games with an external monitor correct? I would still get a ton of frames with just a tiny setback.

      @@Tech2Papa Arriving in 10 business days to Venezuela (i ordered it on Amazon and got it shipped to a cargo forwarding company who will send it to me here). BTW, wanted to request a comparison i haven't found on any site (aside from a side to side spec table which is as easy as gathering all the brochures and specs from AMD and making a table) I will really love to see a benchmark comparison between the Ryzen 7 5800H and the Ryzen 7 5800U, specially a table or graph depicting the power scaling vs performance of each CPU model. Jarrod Tech made a similar graph comparing the 5800H vs the 11800H from intel, in which he ran Cinebench multicore test for each processor limited to various TDP's. My intention is to limit the processor TDP to prolong battery life while unplugged (i know the Swift X has a Silent profile which limits the CPU to 15W while unplugged) but i will like to experiment with lower wattages to use for light browsing and even longer battery life at the expense of performance. The power scaling graph will help us see how the Ryzen 7 5800U performs at, i.e: 8-10-12-15-17-20W on a multicore test.

    • @freddyhung
      @freddyhung 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tech2Papa I've received mine and after extensive testing and use on battery and plugged in, i conclude that i definitely did a good purchase!. Im loving this little capable machine. its a monster!. Regarding the backlight keyboard timeout, the way to eliminate it is on the BIOS. There's an explicit option to disable it and make it behave always on or always off without the annoying timeout!. Also I've read some people complaining about the Function keys working on an inverse way as they do on other laptops (i.e : if you want to press F4 you have to press Fn + F4, since pressing F4 directly increases the brightness of the screen). To make them work properly (pressing F keys directly makes them work as F keys) there's also an Option on the BIOS to enable/disable this odd behavior.

      That’s an interesting topic. For consumers, I’m not sure how big of an impact that will make since it’s uncommon for the average user to constantly read from/write to their drives, so potential improvements in latency and energy efficiency may not be noticeable.
      But for big data fields, these advantages could make a much bigger difference due to the sheer scale of the industry, so it’ll be interesting to see its development there.

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback!
      I won’t be able to do that unfortunately as I have given the laptop back to my friend already. But even if I did have the laptop, I’m not sure how useful that video would be as most of what I would say in such a video would be opinion, and I’d really be comparing laptop vs desktop rather than focusing on a specific model. But even if there were actual numerical comparisons, it would be against a relatively older system (8700K, 1080 Ti) which I doubt would be an appropriate reference point, performance-wise. Desktop vs laptop though sounds like an interesting topic, so maybe I’ll make a standalone video about this in the future.
      However, in succeeding laptop reviews, I can include creator workload benchmarks (e.g. PugetBench Photoshop, Blender Benchmark, V-Ray Benchmark) in addition to the already existing full-system tests (e.g. PCMark, 3DMark) to have a quantifiable measure of how the system being reviewed will perform in those situations in comparison to other similar systems. How does this sound?

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      You mean the longevity of the fan? That’s almost impossible to tell. It all depends on how well you take care of your machine. Since this is the *only* cooling solution it has, I’d recommend cleaning the internals regularly and making sure the fan is clear of dust to ensure it cools your system effectively.

    • @agumon1605
      @agumon1605 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tech2Papa sorry may i rephrase my comment, its about the longetivity of the internals (cpu/gpu) considering they will only be cooled with this single fan, althought by your benchmarks thermals looks fine, im still worried about whether this single fan design may not be capable in the long run (2 years minimum). Any thoughts on that?

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It shouldn't be an issue.
      High temperatures reduce the lifespan of electronic components due to a phenomenon called electromigration (Read more here: www.tekfiz.com/2021/03/electromigration-what-is-it-how-does-it.html). The higher the component's temperature, the greater the electromigration rate which will cause some connections within it to fail faster, producing errors, or worst-case scenario, the component dying completely.
      These components under normal temperatures are built to last many years (decades and decades), so even when factoring in the reduced lifetime from higher temps, they'll still last beyond the point where they'd be considered obsolete.
      If you're still worried about the temps though, consider getting a laptop cooling pad to further improve thermals. You should get a decent temperature reduction from that.

      They are. That’s because for these tests, I average sustained scores and not immediate (where the TDP hasn’t fully expired from its short burst period), because sustained scores are much more representative of actual performance when you’re fully using the CPU. If you’re fully using all your CPU cores (i.e. during a rendering session), that’s probably going to last more than enough time to bring the CPU down to its sustained power limit.

    100% agree with the comments below. This is by for the most comprehensive laptop review I've seen. You also speak very clearly and concise. Thank you.
    You mentioned that both the display outs are routed through the IGP. So when gaming with an external monitor, the dedicated GPU will still be utilized to do the majority of the processing, however, it still has to hand it off to the IGP to display it, instead of the GPU displaying the image directly. And this extra step introduced causes the lower performance?
    My second question - then is the laptop's display connected directly to the GPU which means it doesn't have that extra step?

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For your first question: Yes! This is essentially how NVIDIA Optimus works.
      For your second question: It is not, which means you are sacrificing a bit of performance. But that also means if you’re just using Windows, your dGPU is not active at all, which will vastly improve battery life; a worthy tradeoff for this kind of laptop I think.

    I’m confused at 8:28 when you start talking about gaming. So the display outs and the screen panel are connected to the IGP with no ability to connect to the dGPU directly. So is having the dGPU basically pointless and unusable then? Thanks for the great video!

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      Nope, it doesn’t mean the dGPU is useless. It means that majority of the time when high GPU power is not needed, the IGP takes care of the rendering. When in a game, the dGPU takes care of the rendering, but because the IGP is connected to the screen, the dGPU instead passes the data through the IGP and into the screen, which does make you lose a bit of performance.

    Omg, this is the most detailed laptop review I've ever seen.
    I am an electrical engineering student who programs a lot (using vscode, unity, vs ...),and I also do entry-level 3D modeling from time to time. Do you think if this laptop is suitable? I mean ... no lagging,
    I used to use a desktop with GTX 1050Ti & i5-7400, and I am very satisfied with it. This laptop should outperform my old desktop even in silent mode, right?
    I am choosing between Acer Swift x and Asus tuf dash f15.
    I am not sure if I need that much power that dash f15 provides. I don't mind the extra weight of dash f15 anyway. so maybe I should choose it ?
    Btw, I like to use external monitor and keyboard at home. Will it be a problem that the screen is not connect to dGPU directly?

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      The Swift X will be suitable for all the tasks you mentioned. The Dash F15 is really only good if you prioritize having a more powerful GPU, since the CPUs available with it are only up to 4 cores. So I wouldn’t go for that if you also want to do productive work on your computer.
      Also, to answer your second question, it wouldn’t be a problem at all. You’ll only lose a bit of graphics performance since the dGPU has to pass its data through the IGP.

    This is the best review i saw recently. You should be 100k viewers not 6k.

      I should say though that my test isn’t “standard”. It is _standardized_ across all my laptop reviews (meaning I do the same thing for every laptop), but different people use different metrics for testing (e.g. TH-cam playback time), and my battery life test (multitasking on Excel, Word, and Chrome) is relatively heavier.

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      Hmm thing is, these are two completely different laptops intended for different audiences. The M1 MBA is a fantastic laptop for the average user too, but for different reasons. It has lots of processing power, but the _laptop_ itself has a solid selection of components (e.g. screen, trackpad) with unparalleled battery life. The MBA is a better _laptop_ than the Swift X, but the internals are a different story.
      Compared to the Swift X at the same price point ($1000), it has half the RAM (which may hinder multitasking) and storage, and its IGP won’t be nearly as capable as the 3050 Ti. So, the Swift X has better _internals_, but it’s a worse _laptop_.
      Assuming you’re sticking to the $1000 price point, if you’re just looking for a thin-and-light for simple tasks (e.g. office work), the MBA is probably better. But if you want to push your machine hard and have it excel in multiple areas (e.g. content creation, gaming), the Swift X will be better.

    May I ask, would the fan be blocked when you close the lip and connect to the external monitor? Cause I usually do that and afraid the heat would hinder the performance

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question! The intake vent won’t be completely blocked since there’s still a bit of space underneath for airflow if the lid is completely closed. The problem is the exhaust vent, which gets completely covered by the screen. I would not advise doing what you mentioned with any laptop that has the exhaust vent under the screen (which most thin-and-lights, including the Swift X have, unfortunately). You’ll have to look for laptops that have exhausts at the back if you’d like to do this.
      One question though: will you be connected to an external monitor more often than you travel with your laptop? If you are, you can consider buying a gaming laptop instead which often have rear exhausts. Plus, you’re more likely to have a display out that connects to the dGPU which gives better performance.

    So if there's no way to directly connect to the dGPU, when is it turning on exactly?

    • @Tech2Papa
      @Tech2Papa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! This is because of a technology called NVIDIA Optimus, where a laptop’s display is wired to the CPU’s IGP rather than the dGPU to save battery life. During normal usage, the IGP handles displaying graphical elements, but as soon as more power is needed (e.g. running a game), the dGPU kicks in to handle the rendering of those images but _sends_ them through the IGP to the screen.
      This is also why when in desktop, you can’t use NVIDIA shadowplay to record since the dGPU is not active, but in games, you can.

      Externally, I think it looks fantastic. The internals are a massive letdown though, primarily due to the limitation of 4 cores on Intel’s 35W H-series chips. Unless you’re only doing light tasks (basic office work), you’re far better going for a laptop with higher-core count CPUs such as M1 Macs or Ryzen 7/45W Core i7 machines. If Xiaomi had instead used Intel’s 45W 8-core chips and restricted the power to 35W instead (which is allowed), then I’d be much happier.
