Volcanic viticulture. Viticulture with a volcanic twist
It's grape-harvesting time on Pico, a centuries-old tradition that kicks off in early September. Pico is one of nine islands which make up an autonomous region of Portugal called the Azores archipelago. The islands themselves are peaks of vast volcanic mountains that rise high above the Atlantic Ocean.
Looming in the background of today's photo is Mount Pico, a stratovolcano partly responsible for the island's flourishing wine industry. The mineral-rich volcanic earth and warm climate demand unique methods for growing grapes. Fields of vines run along the ground, resting on top of black basalt rocks the locals call 'biscoitos' (biscuits).
These rock biscuits serve a purpose: During the day, the rocks absorb and give back heat, which in turn helps ripen the grapes. The bull, while picturesque, is merely a bystander enjoying the flowers and the view, and perhaps musing about mysteries of viticulture on a far-flung volcanic island.

Well done , this is exact what I said to my famely, if all hell brakes out we will go in time to Pico. Have a house there in Lajes do Pico from my late wife. Going there from Holland coming August with 2 of my daughters for holidays. First time I was in Pico was in 1964!!. Great video, in Portugees gives "saudades" means in English, a place one wants to be. Thanks!!

The whole island is covered in vineyards. It's absolutely amazing 🤩 And Pico volcano 🌋 as a cherry 🍒 on cake 🎂. My favourite place in the world 🌎❤️🙏
STOP ADVERTISING IT !!!! It's going to be found out by everyone and they will move there and ruin it I plan to move there in three years and don't want to have to fight for a spot because every one has over crowded it !!!!!
I understand your concerns. But I am just a small fish in a big pond. 🙃 My content reach maybe 1000 people. And if 1 of those decides to move there... That might be a lot. However if you look on TH-cam, in 2023 so many creators went to travel to the Azores and have hundreds of thousands of views of the islands content. Luckily thanks to very limited flights and housing opportunities it's even hard to travel the Azores for small capacity. I don't see it rapidly growing anytime soon. @@michaelvaughn7137 At the end of the day, the government is maintaining this. Portugal had very favourable tax policies to attract wealthy people. That changed just recently. Many European countries struggle now with low birth rates and instead of attracting quality people to support the economy, they are inviting illegal immigrants to fill the gaps. Long term they will most likely only suck out the system more though. If they give financial support to families and attract wealthy people... Life in Europe would be much better... ❤️🔥💪💯
Everybody knows about the Azores. The Azores are not everybody's cup of tea and it rains a lot. Also, the house prices already went way above their natural value on pico and Sao Miguel. Stop crying - "me me me", are you even Azorean? :-)
