I’m making a model whaleboat, and now I understand how the boat was used. Very informative. Also found a video of whaling factories on S. Georgia Island. The commercial whaling was much worse than this shore fishery

Well done nice documentary, 1969 was a different time people in Lajes do Pico were poor and the income from the whales than was much needed. Also people have died. I am from Holland my wife from Lajes do Pico and in 1969 summer we were also in Lajes visiting her family. I also filmed than the "Festa do Lurdes" 8 mm color film, procession in the village and near the port.

Wanted to go with the whalers in 1969 also to film, but didn't get permission from the townhall.

I was born in Pico and still remember as a child , When the whales were spotted people would leave everything behind and go hunting them.

My grandparents were from Lajes do Pico. One of the family stories is that some of my family were the lookouts (vigia). I have no idea if this is true, or just a family myth - but at least now I know there really were vigia in Pico! It is such a shame that humans learned to hunt whales, and it is even more of a shame that we continued to do it long after there was any real need to do it for survival.
