I have a 30 year old azalea that's only about 14 inches tall. Been neglected over the years and even near death a couple of times, but it always comes back. This year I re-potted it and gave it a good feed and a better spot in the garden and it's gorgeous. It would make a wonderful bonsai.

@@febeleven It's in a glazed pot, though not a bonsai pot. Even branches that looked dead for a few years popped to life. They're really hardy.

Just a reminder the apex of a satsuki is the weakest part of the tree therfore prune more around the bottom say then the top to balance the vigor in the tree. Also always use kanuma and sphagnum moss in the soil compostion. The good sphagnum from new zealand. These trees are great but do take some research to get going.

Mr. Chan I've smoked plenty of flowers that had never been kissed by the amazing all powerful sun...🤔 if he had a decent grow room constantly 72°f I bet his azalea is still living. Fortunately I'm on the east coast north Carolina where azaleas thrive in mild winters. Tho not the same breed I'm sure they share similar growing characteristics and conditions. Thank you for all your knowledge and letting us walk through your garden with u on a personal tour.

Peter I am so thankful you introduced me to the beauty of Satsuki’s. I made a grave mistake by accidentally buying some in haste and not adequately furnishing enough attention upon them, and alas it appears I may have to start from square one. Nevertheless I am inspired to go on and hopefully I will have some better luck next time.

My son got me a Satsuki Azaleas for this Mother's Day. It says it's a outdoor one... I live in Zone 5 a, but I still have it in the house, because I don't know if I should plant it in the ground or place it outside in the pot it came with, also do I leave it outside during the winter months, if so how do I care for it, it gets pretty cold in the winter. It's doing well in the house. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Could you do a video on how to transplant and prune a Satsuki Azaleas, I've never had this plant before and I don't know how to properly care for one.
    Thank You!

Ill try my best to ans this. Is it a bonsai version? If so kanuma soil is prob the best soil for these trees.i mix kanuma soil with sphagnum moss in my soil. When repoting try not to disturb the roots much and leave at least half the original soil on the tree it came with. It has a very delicate root system. They typically like morning sun afternoon shade but they can handle a good amount of sun. As for the cold they typically dont like below 40 or 50 degrees i would think some may like it some may not. I dont think they would do well if it gets very cold. They do go dormant and need less water in the winter. I live in ny and keep mine protected and in a shed and water very lightly. In the winter u can put it in the house.ive been using osmocote fertilizer the pink bottle. Theres alot of other info on these trees i bought a book on them called floral treasures of japan. Get it. Im sure there other books also . As far as pests always check for aphids. The do pop up sometimes. As far as pruning u can cut them in spring only other time i would is after they flower. U shouldnt leave the flowers on too long either they say it draws energy from the tree. Dont let the flowers seed. Pull the flower out by the bottoms of them removing the whole flower. They put out new buds in the fall for next years blooms. There are a few good videos on youtube about satsukis ud have to look. They do require alot of techniques to this species. Hope this somewhat helps.

@@febeleven u can also repot after flowering or in the spring. There is soo much info on these tree it can get confusing. But the way i do things all my trees go outside no matter what. They are trees. They can do good inside but outside is where they want to be. Only thing i have inside is my orchids . Its weird cause satsukis like the cold so they go dormant but after that say 50 degrees time to go hide it away. Some even drop the leafs in fall. Also with picking the flowers mine was imported from japan and they bare root the tree so for the first 2 years i had to pick them off to promote good root health instead of wasting the trees energy on flowers. I picked the buds before they opened. This year i will let it all bloom. Hope this helps but that book i mentioned is one i have and its very detailed. Prob 20$ online. If u really want to get into them i would get it.
