i don’t even practice bonsai, but your videos are just so informative and soothing - i feel as though i am living through you and your passion. please continue making content, i look forward to every update.
Finally,,, I knew I could count on you, Peter. I have three Azaleas in my collection, all different varieties pre bonsai. I’m now certain they will grow and develop beautifully. Thanks
I live in Maine. I make my own mix of Bonsia soil with the soil that I have. I find that my soil drains well and that my azalea tree love it. While I do buy bonsia soil I find that mixing the two together is a great benefit. While my Azalea Tree is blooming now I expect to cut it back after the tree ends it's bloom season. Your very correct about the need to cut your Azalea. It seems the more you abuse your tree the bigger the rewards next growing season. Best of luck. Live happy and be at peace.
Another great and informative video- Peter!! You're videos are always so very helpful and I I feel like I'm learning from a bonsai/horticultural master. Thank you Sir!
I love your videos there so educational and helpfull. I learned so much from you and I'm going to try to start my own bansai trees from seeds. I have red maple or fire maple and I have Japanese white pine seeds. But I'm afraid I'm not going to do something right and they wont grow. I want to do single trees of both but I also want to make a forest from them too. I know you may not read this but I could use a little help and I guess encouragement to start them. All I have right now is just regular potting soil and I keep hearing stuff about planting seeds in some kind of moss to start them. And also putting them in a sealed container or bag and sticking them in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. I dont know if that is just for the maple seeds or if it's also for the Japanese white pine seeds too. If I can get some assistance from you or one of your subscribers. Thank you and I'm sorry for how long this was but I'm soooo interested in doing this. Ive always wanted to do bansai. It's so peaceful and comforting that you can manipulate the growth of a tree, bush, flower, ect.
I have an azalea and a rhododendron growing outside (not as bonsai) in six to eight inch high mounds of shredded oak leaf compost on top of native clay soil with a bit of sand mixed with the clay, and both plants are doing well. It's rather difficult to get rhododendrons to grow in our heavy clay mostly neutral ph soil, so most of the time it's recommended to mix in around 50% or more sphagnum peat. The shredded oak leaves (mostly post oak) were an experiment, and it seems to have worked, though the rhodo struggled at first while the azalea acted like it was no big deal.
I pruned both of my remaining Azaleas fairly hard last month, they took a few weeks to show new growth but they've taken off now, I just hope I can keep the vine weevils away from them in the future, those little blighters have cost me a few plants.
Wow, the roots of the big one was great to see, never seen them before. This might be a long shot but i have to try: I bought a quite big dwarf cherry ( Kojou-no-mai) yesterday. I could not check the roots in the nursery but i looked really healthy and it was. When i finally got i out it was just rounds and rounds of roots. Can barely see the soil throgh the roots. I know that its the wrong time of the year to repot it but im afraid that it wont make it throug the winter in the nursery pot. Any tips? Thankfull for all the great videos you make Peter Greatings from the south of Sweden!
I usually pull all of the dead flowers off and deadhead them by hand, would it be better to cut them though? Thanks for all of the videos throughout the years!!!
Thank you Peter for sharing your immense knowledge. I’ve a question. If I repot my Satsuki in February, does it will bloom for me in April or May as usually . I always used to repot it after flowering but as you said you prefer to do it in February I would like to give it a try. Have a wonderful day
Great video Peter. I have a very large Satsuki azalea grown in Japan and very similar to the one in your video. I have had it now for about 6 years and it never has flowered. The person i got it from let it go to me as it never flowered for him either. It is potted in the Kanuma mixture and is very healthy. All of my other azaleas flower each year in my care. Do you have any insight on how to get this plant to flower? Love your videos.
I dont know why it hasn't flowered if it is a Satsuki from Japan. Are you sure it is a Satsuki, Send us a pic and I will have a look. Feeding your tree will certainly help it to flower.
Purchased a pre bonsai Chinese elm which I planned on growing indoors. I had no intention of repotting till spring, ,had the tree for a few days and when I went to move it I spotted some tiny white insects at the bottom of pot where it was resting. Was afraid to spread them to the rest of my trees so I decided the soil must have these bugs. I repotted and now the tree is losing all its leaves. Any suggestions? I live in Southern California. Thank you
Chinese Elms are best grown outdoors or if grown indoors they should be in a very cool room with lots of light.. Spray with an insecticide to get rid of the pests or use a strong jet of water from a hose. Keep it outdoors and well watered and it should bounce back.
What's the best month to repot azalea in the Southern Hemisphere, sub tropical climate? I've only been bonsai ing for the past five year. I have learnt a lot watching your post. Thank you.
Thank you for the very informative video, Sensei. What is your opinion on substituting pumice for Kanuma, which is almost impossible to obtain on the west coast of Canada, and prohibitively expensive?
Peter, if the azalea is a late blooming type, can the re-potting be done before flowering time? June or July is now to hot, what can we do if the re-potting should not be done before flowering time?
I re watched this video, and whilst Peter's advice is correct, never ever leave black roots in the re potting process, it accelerates root rot, which crawls up and brings on very nasty root/crown rots, remove ALL black roots both above and below soil level.I'm sure Peter would also recommend this. Re: we can prune back large branches when the plant 'reverts' it goes back to its parent plant colour ie; all white, then to regain the multi colour on that branch we must prune the entire branch off and re grow it. Always seal large cuts with cut paste, to stop bacteria entering the sawn limb.
some of my Azaleas are dying, it seems it's the ones that are in clay pots, so guessing it drys them out too much just a FYI for others, hope I can save them, still a few new green leaves
You say you like to repot in February but no reason why. You also say safe in July, what are the qualifiers ( reasons ) for your logic. I would like to know because I am from the East coast United States and wonder how it applies to me.
Where you live is similar to UK or central Japan. Feb repotting is early Spring repotting which is what we do with most of our deciduous bonsai. In Japan they repot in mid June and July when their rainy season begins. OK but not ideal in cool temperate climes like ours.
@@peterchan3100 Thank you for replying, I admire your work very much! I should add that I live in New Jersey where it still snows sometimes till march. I usually keep my trees in a shed until about march. I think I understand your logic now though -- repot when I believe it is early spring!
Peter I would love to see a video from you some day about the developing process of azaleas for bonsai. there is almost no material on youtube about how to do it
Why would you do it twice? The petals are almost always attached to the stem and the ovule. If you want to remove the ovule to prevent seed from potentially setting, just cut it off. And you also removed the petals.
You may not realize this, but watching and listening to you and your calm voice is very therapeutic. Thank you for making video's. -one of your subscribers

NO - be patient and wait till early Feb to repot it. A pot bound tree won't die.

Thank you Peter.
Could you do a video styling this "small" double trunk azalea?
Really interested
Thank you for the very informative video, Sensei. What is your opinion on substituting pumice for Kanuma, which is almost impossible to obtain on the west coast of Canada, and prohibitively expensive?
What the age of the tree u were prunning in 4:00 time
How do you get such a thick truck and strong nebari?
Great video. I don't think I have the patience for that much maintenance
Air layers possible with Satsuki?
I started 14 small layers last October. I will check, cut off and repot in a couple weeks. 🤞
You are a magician🙏
Thanks Peter thats just the advice i needed
Could one use perlite in place of the kaluma?
You can add a little perlite but it should not be a substitute for Kanuma
Can i repot my azalea's after flowering and prune a little bit ? like you did in the video just to keep the shape of the tree?
2:15 Pheasant plucker or pleasant fu.....wow, on the border there my man.
Dont speak so fast my friend.
My favorite bonsai by far are azaleas but they don't like me lol.

When do you restock your Arakawa (Acer Palmatum) seeds?
In November
@@peterchan3100 Thank you very much Peter, im looking forward to buying them!
Would you use the same soil for camellias?
Thanks.
Dear sir, it is now 10/04. In Belgium. My Amelia is in flowering’s. Can I then cut and repot!. Thank you.
I have an azalea that has been in the ground for 30 years.when is the best time to dig it up and pot it.
early Spring is best
Hello,
Just wanted to ask what kind of sphagnum moss do you use?
Thanks
Hi sir!! Can I asking you , where can I buy the satsuki azalea encylophedia book?
Isn't repotting in July risky? The hot temperatures will dry out the soil and the reduced root mass won't be able to soak up enough water.
Not in Japan but in the west (Europe) repotting in Summer is dangerous
Is it true that you have to be careful when cutting larger limbs off an Azalea?
YOU should seal the cuts and it will be OK. I have seen them cut of large branches in July in Japan
peter chan
Thank you so much for the helpful response!
Love it ❤️
When is the best time to repot ficus bonsai?
early to late Spring is ideal. But if you are in the Tropics then the rainy season would be OK as well.
Love your videos, I’m wondering how old the azalea you are working is, how long does it take to get a trunk that big?
That mole on your arm seems rather large and oddly shaped. Have you considered having it looked at? Thank you for the knowledge about the bonsai.
Thanks for pointing it out. Doctor told me it is a liver spot and not a mole. Comes with age. I am 79.
peter chan You look rather young for your age. It must be the love for bonsai.
Why didn’t you sift the kanuma?
I don't. see the need to sift
peter chan do you worry about the dust blocking waters ability to run through the pot as well as oxygen to get to the roots?
£795 tag on the small one, is that the retail price?
That one is a very rare variety with small leaves and small flowers. Also - anything imported from Japan is expensive
