with SRW games I come for the Gundams and end up enjoying most of the other characters even though i tend to be less familiar with them

For robot upgrade, my personal choice are depend on the type of the mech, namely, whether they are Real or Super robot
Real robot are the robot that generally have average to high mobility with average atk power, for example, robot from pretty much all robot from Gundam series, Code Geass and MC main robot are fall into this category, for these type of robot I would upgrade their mobility 1st and then other stat depend on robot
Super robot are those Heavy hitter but low to average mobility, pretty much all robot that always yell the name of their atk are fall into this category, for these type, I would rather upgrade their armor 1st since they are slow then why bother evade, these guy can tank any dmg all day long and still standing. (I can have my Mazinger Z go solo in swarm of enemy, tank every atk and still no scratch when he wipe out all enemy solo)
There are those who I not sure whether they are Real or Super, mainly who come from Gridman and Ultraman series, never use Ultraman but I upgrade Gridman toward Mobility.

I would recommend mobility for Ultraman because Ultraman is incredibly squishy. Low health and low armor, that or because he is very small (he is human size after all) he takes more damage than other units BUT it is also because of his size he is harder to hit. Might as well focus on his dodge

@@diciannove1100It's okay, it's normal, especially for this game. Luckily, all you really need to remember is, like what the commenter said, that it is a fan service game. This means it's meant to be fun and easy, so you can ignore those menus about "equipping unit parts" if they become overwhelming (I rarely touch those, to be honest, because of that) and the game is still very doable. The rest are important things to know too but above all else, it's the things I just mentioned.
Getting a unit to level 10 upgrades for every stat, excluding weapon damage, will give it a special bonus unique to that mech. Meaning there is still incentive to upgrade a Super Robot's mobility
There are "skills" you can train your pilots to have. You don't need to worry about this now, but when you find a unit you really like, this is where that unit goes from "very powerful" to "it can quite literally finish the entire mission alone, and I mean EVERY." So I recommend checking that out much later when you have gotten used to the game's upgrading mechanic, so you don't get too overwhelmed and have found a unit you love.
If you notice when you use a weapon, it shows icons at the bottom indicating "Land, water, space, air" (not in that order). This usually means "if the enemy is in *terrain*, then it'll take *SABCD* damage." That may seem very important, but honestly, 9 out of 10 times you won't really notice their effect, so I urge you to just ignore that.
You may be wondering how to figure out if it's a beam attack. When you're about to perform an attack, you'll see three squares with different icons in the middle. The last icon, which is colored yellow, shows it's a beam attack. When in water or shooting at a target located in the water, your damage is reduced TO 10 (yes just ten), and generally, enemies with special barriers weaken beam attacks (you'll know it's a barrier because when you hit an enemy, a text will show saying something like armor or barrier, etc.).
      AND LASTLY
Terrain bonus like "+10% mobility and Armor" only affects units on the ground. Meaning anything flying won't be affected. Only time a unit is affected on a terrain while flying is when it gives health and energy BUT NEVER mobility and armor.
