I have been to the summit of Everest about 6 times using my Quest 2 virtual reality headset. I had a few dangerous moments bumping into my sofa, but on the whole i can say it was worth it.
I'm with you, Sean! I've climbed it many more times and have always made it from my sofa and back! I have been to Nepal twice and to the altitude of 16K, but have never had any desire to climb Chamalungma any other way. (And Sherpas are the very best! They became good friends and, sadly, I knew that I would never see them again when we left.). My father, in his 70's at the time, and I were blessed by the Lama in his tiny shack above Langtang. He had the most beautiful smile I have ever seen! It was such a shock when Langtang was completely covered by the landslide and everyone gone. Nepal and the sherpas will always have a special place in my heart.

“Tenzing just a Sherpa, he had no technical experience” Most infuriating statement I’ve heard regarding Mt Everest mountaineering. Especially that one aimed at Tenzing. Sherpas aren’t given enough credit .. not then, not now Sherpas are the real heros when it comes to helping people reach the summit and achieve there dream of summiting.
@@bmd1825 There are plenty of Westerners who got to the top entirely by their own strength, effort and perseverance, so your statement is a bit of an exaggeration. However it's only some professional mountaineering athletes, who managed to climb Sagarmatha/Chomolungma without the help and support of local Nepali's/Tibetans, the "climbing tourists" definitely would never be able to reach the summit if it wasn't for all the effort and help from the Sherpa's, and climbing tourists make up 80-90% of those who climb the mountain. It's also very sad that it's the Sherpa's who run the biggest risks, as noted by the many tragic deaths in recent years that happened as a consequence of avalanches only just above base camp or advanced base camp.
This is another classic that every lover of climbing needs to watch. Like father, like son. I continue to drag my son and son-in-law up mountains and they know the temptation and desire to get to the top. We have stopped and turned around many times over the years. You know the feeling when its time to stop and go back down, live another day to climb another peak. This is a great tribute to Hillary and Norgay.

Pete and Brent attempting the West Ridge very daring so hard to see them carry all their gear. Brent Bishop his dad would be proud. Sad when he left a photo of his kids at his dad Barry's memorial. All the Sherpas should team up and charge climbers three times what they are getting now. True hero's. Great men. Now also all the climbers should clean up Everest. It's a Dump at the main camp.
Gotta be careful when attempting to extort people.. they might decide they don't need you at all. Plenty of mountains out there. If I save for 3 years to go climb it, and you decide suddenly that I need to pay you triple, I have 2 choices.. save for another 5 years, or go somewhere else less crowded, less dirty, less expensive..... and you get ZERO. You seem to blame westerners for all of your problems. Perhaps the government could employ sherpas year round to maintain the mountains natural state. Creates stable year round jobs. Easier to just blame whitey, right!?
I work at a desk all day. Though it sounds boring I wouldn't give it up for any other job but when it comes to that time of the year when I can do what I like the most (traveling) I would never go on a "discount holiday" (package tour or cruise, for example). The moment of excitement when climbing on a plane, when approaching my destination, looking down at recognizable landscapes from above, let alone the emotions when turning the key of the rental car and starting the adventure of a road trip into the unknown - that joyful nervousness can't surely be compared to what a mountaineer must feel when he's seeing his object of desire... still, driving on a highway in the LA area is the most nerve wrecking and exhausting thing I've ever done or I'll ever need 😏

They need to make the climbing permits merit based. People should have to prove they have a certain level of climbing proficiency and they need to have someone with authority to prevent the dangerous traffic jams. All those people on one rope. Plus the Sherpa need to be taken care of a lot more. Health benefits, scholarships, death benefits and better pay. There is too many foreigners making too much money off of the backs of the Sherpa.
Agree wholly. I cant understand the Nepali government and socioeconomic status of the country and its people but even if western agencies made it a trend for safety it could catch on. Most people that do it can afford safer guidelines and would pay for their lives in increased Safety net. Scholarship idea is great. 👌
Beautiful how much more attention and respect is given to the Sherpas. I had no idea they spoke English until watching this movie. As far as I can recall, this is the only Himalayan climbing movie where Sherpas are interviewed!!!! Odd that the two Britsh climbers who failed to summet in '53, are not mentioned by name: there was plenty of time on the sound track to do so.
This wasn't about the British, it was about Hillary and Tenzings son's who followed their fathers foot steps 50 years later. Many other documentary that do mention the British fellows. It's not that deep, you must be a arm chair Adventurer.

There's an even higher mountain but it's hidden from view by mount Everest ,,but my friend Alphonse has a Sherpa friend who is his pen friend and he shown alphonce it when alphonce went there for an holiday ,alphonce didn't climb the secret mountain on his holiday ,but he did climb Everest his friend knew a short cut to the top of Everest that very few people knew Alphonce is going cave diving with an underground Sherpa to guide him ,on his next holiday to Himalaya, He has a friend who works in a travel office ,and he's , going to get him a cheap flight to Himalaya, Alphonce bought a nice Persian carpet from Himalaya when he went on a coach tour to a Himalayan carpet factory ,and he got a 10 %price.reduction Alphonce brought me toffee pick axe souvenir from Himalayan, and an Everest snow bauble It's a plastic bauble with a mount Everest model inside it in water and when you shake it It looks like it's snowing ,it's not real snow but it looks like it is
@@DuecePiece it is a tall tale , the tallest mountains base is buried in a huge amount of snow and you can't see the base of it ,but my friend alphonce and his friends were there for a very long time clearing it away and measuring it ,Then after all that the officials from the Himalayan town council came along and made them place all the snow back ,so it was still picturesque, They said they didn't want the neighbours to keep ringing up the council offices complaining every five mins ,that it wasn't as picturesque as it used to be . Alphonce told me he wished him and his friends hadn't bothered measuring it in the first place and not all his friends who removed the snow would help to put it back
@@DuecePiece ps I myself climbed Helvellyn in the lake district once even though I was warned about striding edge being very dangerous ,those who fell from striding edge on Helvellyn didn't find out if it was more difficult than Everest as they were dead I'll never forget my mam asking me why I wanted to climb it I SAID BECAUSE ITS THERE She said you won't even clear the leaves and rubbish from the guttering on the roof of her house , ,I said you don't need a ladder to climb Helvellyn ,and the man next door won't lend me his ladders after I never gave him his cup of sugar back that he lent me six months ago ,he told me in the pub not to ask for anything else to lend , I told him it was only a small cup full
interesting how ppl take credit for what others have done. i do give much credit to those who know their limits it takes a lot of bravery to turn back and choose life. pride can be a very dangerous attribute.

I believe Odell saw them at the first step, They had not the boots to climb the second step and Irvine had not the skill.If the went Nortons and Maybe Messners route across the yellow band to the Coulthard Maybe, but that's not where they were last seen. If Sandy Irvines body is found and Maybe the camera it would solve the mystery
Looks like command of English improved significantly since 1996. It was almost impossible to understand what Sherpas even Sirdars were saying judging by radio communications and transcripts prepared after the tragedy. It’s one of the many improvements that occurred since then that made climbing safer for everybody in my opinion. Communication is very important.
@@BalletomaneM My friend who lives in Annapurna, not far from Everest told me everyone has mispronounced "Sherpa" so long, they sometimes use that pronunciation. It's "Shar-wa". They gave up on their traditional pronunciation. The older generation still uses the old ways and won't conform. Simple life, hard work, less stress. I'd live in Nepal but its too dang cold!!!

Ive seen many mountaineering videos and many seek to explore culture and learn religious practices, some words and are respectful travellers. If many languages meet, english is often central to the majority..the majority of the time.
Sir Ed and Tenzing agreed that their official story was that they did it together-at the sme time, what difference does it make, given that they would have been seconds apart when standing up there?
Two men at the peak of their powers went up a mountain together as a team. Team achievements must be a strange concept to you to nit-pick who was walking in front for the last 5 metres.

It's sad. They did it together. The who touched the tippy top first...is BOTH of them because they couldn't have made it without each other. Of course, each country is going to want to say their guy was the very first...and they were. I'd say having someone sign something that says "you" made it first puts that into serious doubt. It's a shame and shameful that they'd make Norgay sign his name to something knowing that he couldn't read. Competition ruins the true achievement which was BOTH of them reached the top together.
Sherpa Tensing is and always will be my heroe on Mt. Everest! Why is nothing on this mountain named after him? Why is the hillarystep named after Sir Edmund Hillary? For me unfair! Without sherpa tensing, Sir Edmund Hillary could never climbed this mountain. I understand, they where a team! But why is the world only praising Hillary?
The greedy expedition companies will continue to take those who have NO business being on that mountain! The inexperienced climber should not be able to climb! They are a danger to themselves and others!!

You should need to go 3 months of extreme training & a further 3 months working on the mountain before you should be allowed anywhere near base 4 never mind the summit

I just watched a doco on Mt McKinley, gets to minus -80 out there. That is a scary mountain for its location alone.

I'm acclimating in the Worcester Hills.
Looks like command of English improved significantly since 1996. It was almost impossible to understand what Sherpas even Sirdars were saying judging by radio communications and transcripts prepared after the tragedy. It’s one of the many improvements that occurred since then that made climbing safer for everybody in my opinion. Communication is very important.

@@BalletomaneM My friend who lives in Annapurna, not far from Everest told me everyone has mispronounced "Sherpa" so long, they sometimes use that pronunciation. It's "Shar-wa". They gave up on their traditional pronunciation. The older generation still uses the old ways and won't conform. Simple life, hard work, less stress. I'd live in Nepal but its too dang cold!!!
@@BalletomaneM i get your sentiment but english is more widely spoken than nepalese. Ive seen many mountaineering videos and many seek to explore culture and learn religious practices, some words and are respectful travellers. If many languages meet, english is often central to the majority..the majority of the time.

Two men at the peak of their powers went up a mountain together as a team. Team achievements must be a strange concept to you to nit-pick who was walking in front for the last 5 metres.

Being first means a lot btw, even amongst people in the same team. Rivalry is a real thing. So thanks for the lecture but I've always been a team player, the team comes first. It's sad. They did it together. The who touched the tippy top first...is BOTH of them because they couldn't have made it without each other. Of course, each country is going to want to say their guy was the very first...and they were. I'd say having someone sign something that says "you" made it first puts that into serious doubt. It's a shame and shameful that they'd make Norgay sign his name to something knowing that he couldn't read. Competition ruins the true achievement which was BOTH of them reached the top together.

You should need to go 3 months of extreme training & a further 3 months working on the mountain before you should be allowed anywhere near base 4 never mind the summit
